I love to get these updates! Please continue! :) Your work is a major
LGM success story! I hope that at the next LGM we could even have a
fashion show! That would be amazing...and our own custom clothes, so
cool!

I hope by "you" you mean all people/projects represented on this ML. I am
reading/listening.

I did mean you -- Yuval -- since you put forward a concrete motion to
reach consensus. I think there's a tacit meaning in posting to mailing
lists like this one that anyone's thoughts and comments are welcome.
These exchanges are never simple dialogues.

Anyhow, i think Louis summed up nicely how things can progress in the
short term. I'm still not sure, however, about setting directives for a
5-year period, it does seem too long.

Also, i second Robert Martinez's view on how the LGM 'brand' should
progress. However, this also reminds me that we've been discussing a
Libre Graphics brand that does not yet exist -- there's Create, LGM,
Libre Graphics World et al, but not Libre Graphics per se. Maybe once
the association/foundation comes forward, it can be discussed and
defined there.

Finally, i feel awkward by having chipped in in these threads and not
having mentioned Camille's work; honest thanks for the effort,
perseverance and all the good ideas that you put forward, Camille! :)
I'm all for applying this style to the Create website.

And it's great that wheels are already moving for LGM 2011.

Glad to hear. BTW, I wrote to Till CC'ed Steve and you can see about finding an
interesting large format pen-plotter/printer to put that work into some
practical use!

Re: [CREATE] Open Source Fashion Software Update

2010-08-21 Thread Susan Spencer
Thank you Alexandre for the news story on inkscape.org

And Jon, a fashion show next LGM would be both excellent and goofy. 'goofy'=
'geeky' + ridiculous amounts of beer

I'll develop some more men's designs, and and then jump ahead to create the
website for user login, measurement input and storage, and listing of
patterns for custom svg or pdf download with instructions. At some point
I'll be able to handle special requests for patterns. And be available to
answer any questions about construction.

Eventually I'll have to develop the extensions, icons, toolbar, help files,
and interface so that designs can be developed by other users, and they can
post their designs on the website, too. It's the design that requires the
'old ways' and is not so well known.

But anyone is welcome to download the current files. If they can read my
clunky code, they can change the extensions to draw what they want.

If you have followed the discussion about the 2010 visuals you know that I was
strongly against them. For the same reason I now applaud Louis adoption of
those same visuals for 2011 and I hope 2012 will be an evolution rather than
the revolution we have seen every second year (i.e. every year when LGM was
not managed by Louis). Bravo Louis!

An intended, planned, managed process changing the visual appearance can be
codified as part of an identity; or even as the centerpiece of it if you so
desire. If this is your identity, so be it. This is not what I see now.
What I see now is improvisation.

I'd like to raise awareness to the full cost of such an identity: it's not
just the dissipation of energy and the diversion from core issues. It's also
a reset of the recognition value and affects critical tasks.

No identity, corporate or otherwise, is set in stone. The process of changing
it is so costly that even the more selfish of leaderships will first make sure
it can afford the disruption. Not codifying the identity does not eliminate
these cost. It just hides them.

There is at least one good example of an orderly evolving identity in the
FLOSS world: Ubuntu. Learn from it! Their visuals change every six month but
the lineage is never broken. It is carefully crafted evolution, not
revolution. The pace of visual change is adapted to the pace and dynamics of
the project / organization.

So, now that I wasted some more time/energy (yours and mine) that could have
been used to:
- fix a bug
- support a user
- write a tutorial
- translate a few strings
- just have fun with private creations
- testing the waters for a repeat of http://www.uwivi.com/ in 2011

You will excuse me, Ricardo, if I am not inclined to deconstruct your
arguments one by one. Let's just agree to disagree. Good luck to you with
your projects.

Yuv

Why not?

As a creator I believe I have the right to mix and match proprietary and Free
tools.

I want the directory to help me make an informed choice. This includes
information on all tools, not just Free ones.

I prefer to find out earlier than later if there are interoperability issues
and how standard compliant a software is if there are standards.

Anti-competitive behavior that limits my freedom directly or indirectly should
be exposed (e.g. NDA's that make it difficult or impossible for developers to
support my need for interoperability).

The difference between advertising and information is that advertising centers
on strengths only, conveniently forgetting to mention the weaknesses. I would
like to see an informative directory complete and honest, even if sometimes
honesty is brutally hurting.
