[CREATE] LGM 2012

2011-08-12 Thread Joao S. O. Bueno
Hi there -

I think that up to ow we have no confirmation of a LGM venue for 2012 - do we?

I am at talks with Eliane Domingos, member of The Document Foundation
to host a big Free Graphics event on Rio de Janeiro next year -- she
has means to get some heavy sposorhip if she asks for it before the
end of this month.

This means we could possibly afford LGM around here - Since we are
meeting today and tomowwow at this small event, I will push for this
to be the official LGM (we will have a huge free graphics event
anyway) - unless one of you have a big "no" to say about that.

I am fine with this: we currently have two south-american krita hackers anyway.

hi joao,

nice to see you caring about it!

there are a few ideas, but afaik nobody having made a formal proposal.

the most serious proposal i have heard of, has not been publicly discussed, yet.
and -- afaik -- it's far from the status of a formal proposal.

as a summary, i'm aware of the following possible/proposed locations:

- berlin
- serbia
- vienna
- toulouse
- argentina
- vietnam
- kerala
- switzerland
(no specific order; i hope i got them right...)

on top of it there is the option of running several smaller and regional LGMs.

my opinion is: if you can get finances and a crew, go for it! make a proposal!

as far as i could understand it, brasil is one of the places with the most
vivid libre graphics communities... it may be the right place to go to!

Hi Joao !

So far and to my knowledge the only formal and yet to be officially proposed
(only a matter of vacation time, actually) and the most serious location and
team is Toulouse in France. More to come in the coming weeks (or days,
even).

I am very happy to read your proposal and can't wait to know more about it.

Let's make 2012 happen !

Cheers !

Louis

I would hope that maybe for a change we might not only have a solid #1
proposal for 2012, but perhaps #2 might be tentatively lined up for 2013.

For this to work, we have to ask for sponsorship right now - this meas
we can get sponsorship for the air tickets sponsored as well.
Can someone give me a figure of (max) number of developers/lecturers
who should be sponsored? If we can factor this in in the sponsorship,
we get over the main difficult of
hosting it "far away" from Europe/North America.

The sposorship and organizers are actually related with "gnugraf" - a
user oriented
Libre Graphics event that is holding its 4th instance this year:
http://gnugraf.org/

People are interested in making "gnugraf" much larger for 2012 - and are getting
professional help for this to happen - I am meeting the person
responsible for getting this sponsorship for the next 2 days (Eliane
Domingos, copyed here) - so that we can have "gnugraf 5" and "Libre
Graphics Meeting 2012" as one single thing.

IIRC, there's never been a fixed number of people in the past. Every
effort was made to sponsor everyone who didn't have an employer- or
project-sponsored ticket, and the total was divided up as equitably as
possible. But I could be wrong; I've only been on the periphery of
those discussions.

I for one thing that's great; since LGM has always been a moveable feast
(so to speak), trying to co-locate it with calendar-and-geographically
near events seems like an excellent opportunity. Puts far less strain
on the local organizing team (which is part of why I perceive it's been
harder to get proposals going as the years progress). Plus you have
access to a potentially wider audience, and perhaps more developers
could get approval for employer travel funding.

At least I think that the former seems to work for some other events
(like Community Leadership Summit and OSCON) the latter seems to work
for several kernel events.

Well that's my 2 céntimos, anyway -- anything that greases the machinery
of progress

[CREATE] MyPaint Testing PPA

2011-08-12 Thread Andrew Chadwick
To keep bug reports and feedback for MyPaint rolling in, I thought
it'd be nice to let Ubuntu users who want bleeding edge stuff or just
want to help playtest install binaries from an experimental PPA that
tracks master. So I set one up:

  https://launchpad.net/~achadwick/+archive/mypaint-testing

Instructions on the linked page. I'll probably update it whenever a
new feature like the scratchpad lands on master, or if something major
has happened, e.g. a big win like a 33% speed increase in saving...!
Expect updates no more than once a week, expect things to break, and
if it breaks your computer you get to keep both bits.

(Hmm. I should probably split the hi-res backgrounds out of
mypaint-data and tell Gürkan, shouldn't I? That's quite a huge package
and we don't *need* all of those fancy backgrounds just to run the
program.)
