Reasonable summary: Just because Internet telephony isn't covered by CALEA does not mean that it is safe from wiretapping. It does mean that a court order is needed for any kind of wiretapping, and that the FBI can't depend on ISPs for technical assistance, and need to develop the necessary technology themselves. Of course, there's also the substantial risk of non-law-enforcement entities tapping your Internet telephony. Use strong crypto, but you all knew that already. Marc

FCC issues CALEA orders
Or at least, a press release of a summary of pending orders. The FBI (and every other LEA, there are too many to count) got almost every wiretapping aid they asked for, and they had apparently asked for a lot. Somehow, this is not a big surprise. See www.fcc.gov, in particular: www.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Engineering_Technology/News_Releases/1999/nret9003.html For a reasonable summary, see: http://abcnews.go.com/wire/US/reuters19990827_2390.html [EMAIL PROTECTED]
