[css-d] browser testing, and redirect.

2010-12-25 Thread Chris Blake

Hi,

http://www.emw8.com/
Is a new design and web-dev business/website I am making that
specialises in multi-lingual and localised content.
I'm based in China so I want to make my site fully translated (by
people not machines) in English and Chinese. I'm getting on top of
that bit, but when doing browser tests in China I ran into some
nasties. Old computers, old browsers, weird browsers - you name it,
they've got it! Statistics here are: IE (50%), Maxthon (20%), and 360
(20%). Mozilla, sogo, chrome all have tiny shares. It's not as simple
as just telling them to update. Many browsers are used because some
online banking and e-commerce only support these browsers.

Needless to say most template builders stopped supporting IE6 a couple
of years ago so my site breaks big time in IE6 and some of these
Chinese browsers (IE modifications). My solution was to add a script
redirecting IE6 users to a page with a different, IE6 supported,
template. It's good because users see something, articles can be
reused, and it's all housed in one CMS.

So my question is really, how do you guys get on with it?
I know there is an issue with the language selection box but I am
working on that. There isn't anything in the 'test' box. Everything
else should be working fine.

If you load the page and end up on http://www.emw8.com/index.php/en/
ie6 it should be because you are using IE6. Let me know if that's not
the case.
The language detection works, not by Geo IP, but what language your
browser is in. If there's any Chinese using this list then I'd be
interested to know if that works.

My recent tests have been really good.

It's very much in development, but I just want to check browser
stability, and the redirecting function.

Merry Christmas!

@David and Felix: Thanks for the feedback.

I have fixed the issues mentioned. The IE7 issues mentioned by Felix
were due to an IE7 bug that is fixed with body{font-size:100%}. See:

Uh. Firefox 3.5 never supported css 2d transitions; that is something
new in Fx 4b - you may confuse it with css transforms.

Ah, there is my answer, thank you Philippe.

... The transition does not work in your demo in IE9. I do not dare
download FF4b since my attempts in the pass has created conflicts
between release and beta version of FF.

I'm nor surprised, after the reviewing that release cod for IE 9.
They don't support CSS transitions, only css 2d transforms.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/ff468705.aspx

Its seems that I have transforms and transitions slightly mixed up.

CSS 2d transforms would be my preferred way of doing the change in
size nowadays, fwiw.

Don't write of transitions yet. Please view in Safari 5 and Opera 11 (A
check in FF 4b would be appreciated).

The effect people might use jQuery for, and you've achieved with

There is nothing particularly new in that demo, I've been using those
tricks for a few years. The only thing Alan added in reply to
Gabriele is the use of css transitions to give an impression of
sliding in/out - something that so far required js to accomplish.

Precisely. CSS can in ways replace current uses of JavaScript. I just
waited.

Hi,

http://www.emw8.com/

Mac FF 3.5.16 gets the following PHP errors (which I assume you are
aware of) but otherwise seems to work.

Warning: imagejpeg() [function.imagejpeg]: Unable to open

Also when I use the Default User Agent Plug-In to claim to be
Win-IE6, I am NOT directed to http://www.emw8.com/index.php/en/ie6
but just get the normal page with no formatting or images. The same
thing happens with Mac Safari 5.0.3 when I use the Develop Menu to
tell the server I am Win-IE6. You might want to look at your PHP code
to see (and report) the information being passed to the server when
these emulate settings are used and how it differs from what is
received when a real copy of Win-IE6 connects.
