In our site, we want every image to assume this CSS

{
float:right;
padding-left:15px;

Is there a way to make every image  put into the site to assume this definition
by redefining the  tag

like

.img
{
float:right;
padding-left:15px;

That doesn't seem to work.

validated the page's html. There are 6 errors that are linked to a facebook

ie7, 8, firefox 3, safari, 3, safari 4, safari 5. Any ideas or clues on how
to start troubleshooting for ie9?

Clear: all is not a valid value. Are you looking for clear: both?

---Tim

If you are trying to expand the wrapping div around the two floats you need to
put the br tag inside the outer div right before the closing .

Other than that, if you want to have the two floating divs side-by-side, I do
believe you need to give them a width value - otherwise they will assume 100%
width.

If you're referring to the fact that the images showing up in the
additional project photos are 5 then one just below the 5th image, and
then the next row. This has to do with the fact that the vertical height
scaling is 1 pixel less than the previous images on that 5th image so
the next row can't float all the way to the right but just hits that 1px
and stops.

Greetings - Can you tell me what is wrong with the following conditional
comments for IE? It appears near the top of my Head for each HTML page,
below META tags and Title.
The standard css file is overriding the IE6 and IE7 specific versions.
For
example, if I give the body a green border in the IE6 style sheet, it
shows
in IE6 only. But if I then add a different colored border to the
standard
style sheet, it overrides the border specified in the IE6 style sheet.
Hope
that makes sense. Thanks.

And properly so. If you want to have a standard sheet and then override
settings just for each version of IE the IE conditionals have to come
after the standard sheet.

Hopefully, the "higher ups" understand the unpredictable nature of
invalid code and will allow you to do something else instead.

Is it that the "higher ups" absolutely insist on an H2 tag or they want
the styling and font size of the H2?

You could always use a span with an id tag and style it the same as the
h2, which would be valid code then and which wouldn't be using the H2
tag for what it wasn't intended - a visual effect instead of a semantic
one.

As David said you should wait before correcting what may not be broke
when the final release of IE8 is out.

If it truly is buggy in this beta you should first check if it has been
reported and if not enter a report. The more seemingly insignificant
bugs that can be squashed before the final release the easier it will be
to adapt to the new IE.

I seem to remember the same scrambling-to-fix when IE7 beta was
released, a lot of which became unnecessary after the release.

Re: [css-d] CSS: Background img

2006-04-13 Thread Dennis Bixler

Actually the definitions are

../img = Go up the directory tree one level and then down to the img
directory

And

./img = start in the level where you are at and go down one level to the
img directory.

If your css file is in the root it could be translated the same if
parent directory is disabled (a common thing nowadays), however if
parent directory walking is enabled it will not work exactly the same
every time.

If you know your img directory is directly off the root the
/img/whatever.jpg would be best as its always relative to the root
directory. It just gets a little tricky when you have directories that
might be off of a subdirectory. This is why css defines the path as
related to the css file and not the page that calls the css.

RE: [css-d] Border on inline element in last block in IEWin 6

2005-09-02 Thread Dennis Bixler
I think that has to do with the lower-case characters that have sections
protruding below the baseline of the text, like p and g. IE doesn't
extend the containing below the baseline but the box around the text
does, therefore causing the disappearing bottom border. "p" elements
normally have padding below so it doesn't show up under normal
conditions.

I guess your solution of the padding is probably the only one, either
that or don't use any of the offending letters :). Perhaps someone has a
better solution.

In IE5.5, strangely, there is no problem. In IE5
no problem either, because no border :-)

RE: [css-d] SOLVED - Problem with floats and IE6

2005-08-29 Thread Dennis Bixler
Just be warned that with this approach you have to make sure that your
guesstimate on the percentage width is small enough to allow all screen
resolutions that you might encounter.

Check the dropping float on very low resolutions and adjust that
guesstimate accordingly. You might find that on really low resolutions
(like what might be found on some portable devices) the dropping float
reappears. Speaking from experience on this one. :)

Thanks to Dwain offlist and his website and css as an example, I found
that setting width: auto breaks things when you're dealing with
floats. I ended up having a fixed 200px menu and the content width is
a percentage that I guestimated based on how much "window" was left.

Thanks to all who responded. I was sure that floating both menu and

RE: [css-d] Disappearing Background Images in both IE and FF

2005-08-19 Thread Dennis Bixler
The page displays fine for me running FF1.0.6 with a refresh and all.
However in IE6win has the very strange problem of the dates being fixed
on the page when everything else scrolls. The backgrounds are fine even
after refresh.

 I got past that hack, but now am having a problem with my background
images disappearing upon a page refresh. I am sure it is not IE's
fault, because this disappearing act is happening in Firefox 1.0.6 as
well as IE 6.0 on different computers. I have never encountered this
kind of disappearing act in Firefox.

Other than differences in the base font sizes I don't see any
differences between IE6win and Firefox 1.0.4.

Yes of course, I am willing to do all what's necessary to solve it.

It's now on http://test.doesburg.biz/test1.html

The problem is that IE looks (I did not said it renders all well) good.
How can I get Firefox does the same?

Hope you can help me.

RE: [css-d] Float pushing content down

2005-06-30 Thread Dennis Bixler
Normally this happens because you either have a container that isn't
wide enough for the two divs PLUS borders and scrollbar. That container
can be the overall html container if there isn't one defined. You can
normally spot this by the telltale dropping of a div.

Try reducing the width of you #middle container.

Subject: [css-d] Float pushing content down

Hi,

I have been working on this page layout

http://www.storesprite.org/lamp/

In ie 6 the page content (#middle) gets pushed below where the left
column content ends. I can't figure out why this is and have pulled out
most of my hair trying to find out.

If I remove the float evertything goes wrong in all browsers!

#left
{
width: 200px;
margin-left: 2px;
padding: 0;
float: left;
background: transparent;
}
#middle
{
background: transparent;
width: 586px;
margin-left: 200px;
margin-right: 18px;
padding: 0;
}

Have I made a silly mistake?

Thanks,
Vince

RE: [css-d] li:hover does not work in IE

2005-06-22 Thread Dennis Bixler
You are going to hear this from a lot of people. The :hover pseudo
class only work with the a tags in IE.

You can achieve the same results using the :hover on the anchor instead
of the list. List-o-matic will generate the code, don't have think
right off hand but it is in the wiki.

Hello,

I'm trying to use the :hover pseudo element for a list, and it works
great in Firefox and Safari but not at all in IE (all Macintosh). Is
there a trick to getting the :hover element to work in Explorer?

Also make sure you set border-collapse:collapse; on the table tag to get
the table cells to butt together with no spaces in between.

I have tabular data:

foo

The tr... /tr parts repeat a few times, but anyway, I want them to just
snug
up against the type in them, which I can not seem to make happen,
whereas a
normal html table will see to do this just fine.

Great hint, Paul. Could those of you who saw the problem before please
try this page and see if I've fixed the problem?
http://www.pcc.com/welcometest.html

(PS -- I know about the IE6 problem with the smaller screens. Working
on that, as well. Would be so much nicer if IE 6 would just honor the
'min-width' declaration.)

Thanks,
Barb

Oh, and also note that in IE6-WinXP at 800x600 the header text to the
right of your header image is pushed below the image. Also the search
box on you navigation line is pushed below the rest of the navigation.

Hello again.

This page is now live, but I'm seeing an intermittent weirdness with
some browsers on Linux platforms. (Yes, this matters. We're a largely
Linux company and many of our clients are there or headed that way, as
well.)
http://www.pcc.com/

For some reason, the leftnav box appears too high on the page in Mozilla

and FF on the initial load. A refresh of the page puts it where it
belongs.

Does anyone have an idea as to why this is happening and/or how it might

be fixed.

Thanks,

Barb

RE: [css-d] something weird in Linux

2005-05-13 Thread Dennis Bixler
FWIW, it does it in Firefox 1.0.4 on WinXP but only on the first load of
the page, or if you clear the cache and the load the page.

Not sure what's causing it but it could be that something is slow in
loading above and the position on the page has no viable reference yet.
I normally notice this kind of behavior when there is a floating image
or height sized div that is delayed.

RE: [css-d] Disappearing Format

2005-05-06 Thread Dennis Bixler
Not sure what's up but there is an error in your css. Since this is in
the section for your menu you should fix that.

In the section
#background{

You have a value of 1 for border:

Numerics have to have a value type defined, as in 1px, 1em, or other
typedef.
Also I would use border-width: if all you are going to do is set the
border width at that point.
