Re: [css-d] Problem with float drop on pages with a 3-column CSS layout that are generated by Movable Type

2009-01-09 Thread Pabini Gabriel-Petit
Hi again

I'm now seeing the float drop only in Safari, but there's a different
problem in Firefox on the Mac. The background color for the right sidebar is
overlapping the main content area.

The one layout change I made from the original version was to take a new
approach to get the main column's background color to extend to the bottom
of the page on pages with short content. So, I changed the page background
color from purple to white and used background images for the purple
sidebars. I took the approach described here:

http://www.stopdesign.com/log/2004/09/03/liquid-bleach.html

But the directions were pretty sketchy, so I don't know if I achieved the
effect optimally. It's that background for the right sidebar that's not
displaying properly on Movable Type pages in Firefox.

When I remove the following min-width property, the float drop goes away in
Safari, but the column background doesn't work properly without it.

#main-box {
min-width: 504px;
}

This is as much as I've been able to figure out since my last.

I hope someone can help.

Regards, Pabini

Hi Everyone

I should have mentioned that this problem occurs only with Movable Type 4.2.
The CSS was working fine with Movable Type 3.1. I'm seeing this problem in
both Safari and Firefox on a Mac.

I hope there are some CSS/Movable Type experts on the list who can help.
Thanks!

Re: [css-d] Problem with float drop on pages with a 3-column CSS layout that are generated by Movable Type

2009-01-09 Thread Pabini Gabriel-Petit
Hi David and Georg and Everyone

Thanks for your input, but unfortunately, starting from scratch is not an
option. I'm already almost a week late getting the magazine out, so if I
can't fix this in the next couple of days, I'll have to generate all of the
Movable Type pages and publish with the bug. The CSS works perfectly well
across all browsers on both the PC and Mac. It's only on Movable Type
generated pages that there's a problem. I created the code in 2005 and have
made only minor modifications since to correct problems that arose when
later browsers came out. I originally did start with no hacks and got the
layout to work in Firefox, then added hacks to get more uniform presentation
across browsers. Perhaps some of them aren't necessary now, but I wouldn't
know about that.

What I really need is for someone who knows both CSS and Movable Type—who
might have encountered a similar problem or know what might cause such a
problem—to have a look at the code. I desperately need to solve this problem
quickly.

I agree with Georg. Nevertheless starting from scratch is a good but
perhaps somewhat daunting experience if you are relatively new to CSS.
Working with a base layout that is known to work cross-browser helps.
The tutorial for this three column layout /may/ serve you well...

Ok, but it looks like you're trying to hack the livin' daylight out of
poor IE...

...and that's not a good start - especially since most of those hacks
are not doing any good in IE or elsewhere.

Styling faulty source-code...

...also has a tendency to fail...

...and the MT source-code looks even worse...

The problem with all these code-weaknesses is that all browsers will try
to "repair" them in different ways, and indeed: your pages turns out
differently in every browser on earth and varies wildly even between
versions of same browser.

No use looking for the cause of one specific failure among all the
others in such a case. Better start from scratch and pay attention to
web standards while you're at it, and avoid all hacks until you've made
it work without any in the good browsers.

There's also an enormous amount of unnecessary wrapper-elements in the
source-code, of which most seem to be used to create minute offsets in
the line-up. Margins on the meaningful elements are better suited for that.

Georg

[css-d] Problem with float drop on pages with a 3-column CSS layout that are generated by Movable Type

2009-01-08 Thread Pabini Gabriel-Petit
Hi Everyone

I've been banging my head against this problem for two days to no avail. I
haven't got a great deal of experience when it comes to creating complex CSS
layouts, so please don't assume too much knowledge.

The CSS I created seems to be working fine on hand-built pages like this
one:

http://new.uxmatters.com/aboutus/

But on pages generated by Movable Type, I'm getting a float drop when I make
the window narrower than can display the entire page. The content in the
sidebar on the right drops to the bottom of the page and overlaps the main
content. Here are examples of two page types for which I've built templates
so far:

http://new.uxmatters.com/index.php

http://new.uxmatters.com/2008/12/the-user-experience-of-enterprise-software-matters.php

Both of these very different pages exhibit the same problem. This is my
first time building custom Movable Type templates. I have no idea what's
causing the problem.

I hope someone on the list can help me figure out how to solve this problem.
I have to get an issue of UXmatters out next weekend. Thanks in advance for
any help you can provide.
