Your mobile phone rings, and a coupon for coffee appears on its screen, good only at that location. How did your phone know you were even near that particular Starbucks? What else does it know about you? Enter location tracking, coming to a mobile device near you. Features that one day can pinpoint your whereabouts to within the length of a football field raise enormous privacy concerns, but they also offer enormous benefits. The challenge will be determining where to draw the line. Consider a technology to be unveiled Monday. Called Digital Angel, a microchip worn close to the body promises to record a person's biological parameters and send distress signals during medical emergencies. But misused, these types of capabilities could amount to virtual stalking. Cell phones, handheld devices, even car navigation systems will soon have detailed tracking abilities, if they do not already. Services could begin appearing within a year or so. Much of the drive will come from a federal law that requires cell phones to identify callers' locations to speed 911 emergency responses. If the industry has to install expensive equipment anyway, why not use it also to make money? "There's going to be a dramatic increase in the amount of tracking that's made possible, in part by services they don't know they have," said Daniel J. Weitzner of the World Wide Web Consortium, which sets technical standards for the Web. Such tracking will let someone visit a Web site and automatically get weather, movie showings or neighborhood restaurants, based on their current location. If they're lost, they will be able to ask for turn-by-turn directions. Those short of cash can be pointed to the nearest bank machine. But if the information is stored, location tracking could result in a 24-hour-a- day record of a person's whereabouts. So what if a divorce lawyer wants to check if someone's been cheating, or if a social service agent wants to know how many times a person has visited a candy store with his child? "You have to ask, `Who gets how much information?"' said Jason Catlett, chief executive of Junkbusters Corp., a non-profit privacy monitoring group in Green Brook, N.J. "Telephone records are routinely subpoenaed. They can be very intrusive, but far more intrusive is a complete log of your physical movement." Companies looking to gain business from location tracking say that the worst-case scenarios presented are impractical to implement in reality. "There's no way a database is large enough or cost effective for Starbucks to monitor everyone's location on the offchance they can acquire a customer," said Jason Devitt, chief executive of Vindigo, which offers 11 city guides through Palm organizers. Lee Hancock, founder and chief executive of go2 Systems Inc., said any short-term gains from such tactics would be offset by losses if they alienate customers. Leading wireless and advertising companies agree that they must tread carefully because mobile devices are inherently more personal than desktop computers. At DoubleClick Inc., whose ad-targeting system generated much of the Net's privacy complaints, officials won't deliver location-based ads right away. The company wants to develop privacy standards first, using lessons from the desktop. "We've all learned what to do and what not to do, and we can port that over to the wireless market," said Jamie Byrne, strategic director for emerging platforms at DoubleClick. Any such ads will likely target a metropolitan region, rather than a city block, because audiences for block-by-block ads would be too small, Byrne said. Ultimately, he said, such targeting will help subsidize wireless services that customers want. Jonathan Fox, director of business development at advertising company Engage Inc., says location-based profiles would not carry names and other personal information. TRUSTe, which runs a seal-of-approval program for Internet privacy policies, is looking to develop guidelines for mobile applications. Details that remain to be worked out include how to notify customers on a phone's small screen. "It's more difficult to retrofit policies if you're already down the road," said Robert Lewin, TRUSTe chief executive. "Here, we have the opportunity to do it right the first time." In many ways, a person's whereabouts are already being tracked. Employee security cards record when people enter buildings. Discount grocery programs track what people buy, where and when. Electronic toll- payment systems know when someone traverses a tunnel or bridge. Current phones can pinpoint callers to a few miles by determining the location of the cell tower used to handle the call. Palm VII organizers use similar techniques to narrow a user to a particular

-Caveat Lector- Prudy, this is so true and cannot be said often enough. I have long awaited the church to make some sort of remediation on this situation but suspect that will never happen while humanity starves itself into a state of total degeneration trying to adhere to these teachings. And the idea that women "like" abortions is ludicrous and misogynistic in the extreme. I think most women get abortions out of desperation and financial hardship such as being abandoned by the man who fathered the child, if you can call it that. Where are the men in all these abortions? I suspect they are often irresponsible and quickly move on to create yet more unsustained pregnancies. If things were ideal, I think abortions would be rare indeed. Any procedure carries with it a certain amount of risk, all of which is placed on the woman. the term "safe" abortion is relative only. It is a risk not many men I know would be willing to take yet as you pointed out, they are the ones who cannot be bothered with birth control in many cases. That is why I support the VAWA as this country has a long way to go in this area. On this note, I recently saw the movie Cider House Rules and think it was not as good as the book which I highly recommend. It made me much more understanding of the abortion issue. I was adamantly opposed until I read this book and it really revealed to me how women so often have we no choice. The movie is well made and worth seeing if anyone is interested and does not have time to read the book. LOUIS, Mo. -- Aldous Huxley said it best 56 years ago: "A really efficient totalitarian state would be one in which the all-powerful executive of political bosses and their army of managers control a population of slaves who do not have to be coerced, because they love their servitude. To make them love it is the task assigned, in present totalitarian states, to ministries of propaganda, newspaper editors and schoolteachers. But their methods are still crude and unscientific." That was certainly true 56 years ago. Today, I would suggest, the biggest change is that the methods are less crude, more scientific. In fact, America is moving closer to totalitarianism and servitude -- and most people don't even recognize it, let alone need to be coerced. "What are you talking about, Farah?" I hear some of you saying. "We're in the midst of a spirited presidential election cycle in America. How can you say we're not free and moving toward dictatorship?" The sorry state of the presidential debate is a case in point. Both of the two major candidates are running campaigns calling for increased federal government spending and, thus, more intrusion in and regulation of the lives of individual Americans. Vice President Al Gore makes no bones about what he wants -- he would like to micro-manage every facet of American life. Gov. George W. Bush, on the other hand, pays lip service to limited government, but his programs betray the rhetoric. Social Security is a hopeless Ponzi scheme that takes far more money from people than it returns. But neither of the viable candidates dares tell the public that the emperor has no clothes. That would be "political suicide," the consultants and polls show. Therefore, no debate on the merits of Social Security takes place. Medicare is another bureaucratic mess. But does anyone call a spade a spade? Not a chance. Don't want to risk losing the senior citizen vote. The federal government has no business at all in education. Washington has already made a bloody mess of school policy. But both major candidates would spend more on it and get Washington even deeper into a command-and-control, one-size-fits-all, top-down form of management. To hell with the Constitution! Even a program as fraudulent, unnecessary and un-American as the National Endowment for the Arts is a non-starter in this campaign, just as it has been with the Republican Congress that has voted it budget increases every year since 1994. I met over the weekend here with a group of doctors, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. These people understand what government intrusion has meant to health care in this country. And with either of the leading candidates, it's bound to get worse. Many of these doctors are opting out of the Medicare system -- not because they don't want to treat the poor, but because of the inefficiency, red tape, government snooping and blatant illegality of it all. Some of these doctors treat their poor patients for free, rather than get involved with Medicare. But nobody in politics or the media establishment seems to hear their concerns, their anguish, their common-sense analysis of what is truly wrong with our health-care system. What's wrong with it is there's too much government involvement now. And Washington's prescription is more involvement, more regulation, more control. This is not an accident. I don't believe most politicians in Washington are stupid. They have an agenda. And that agenda is, in a word, "power." The debate is rigged. It's not really a debate at all. The ground rules don't permit the introduction of real controversy, root problems and meaningful questions. Huxley saw through it 56 years ago when he looked at the totalitarian regimes of his day. The methods were crude and unscientific. They've become more perfected. The schools and the newspapers now serve the state blindly just as the old propaganda ministries once did. Are we there yet? Have we reached our destination on the road to totalitarianism and servitude? If not, we're well on our way. And, given the Orwellian state of the presidential debate in this age of unreality, we're sure to be a step or two closer come Jan. 20, 2001. The world wide epidemic of pedophilia was first introduced to Rumor Mill News readers in an article written by Gunther Russbacher, a Special Operations (SOG) Field Team leader who was Navy Intelligence attached to the CIA. In the article, Operation Clydesdale, Russbacher described a Special Operations Group that was fielded behind the Iron Curtain. The SOG was created under the auspices of the United States attorney's office in New York City. The U.S. Attorney in that area was Rudolph Guiliani. The article describes the field operation, but it does not go into the years of preparation that went into the operation. The operation was ready to rock and roll in 1986, but the preparations for the operation had begun many years before. Pedophile porn films are some of the hardest porn films in the world to buy. The film makers and distributors of "child porn" are extremely reluctant to make new contacts. They only trust people who have been in the business for years. Step three was the creation of a catalog filled with porn films and other sex paraphenalia. Step four was to use the catalog as an entry way into the world of "hard porn" and "kiddie porn". Step five was setting up porn film companies to create films for the catalog and gain further acceptance into the porn world. Step six was money laundering. This step overlapped with other crimes such as drug dealing, spying, taking bribes, and general corruption on the part of world leaders. Step seven was the creation of software that could track money launderers on a world wide basis. FACT: The GovtMedia reported that the prisoners cut the hostage's throats. Headlines even read "I Saw The Slit Thoughts." Recently, 25 years later, the man who did the autopsies, Dr. Baden, said on the HBO series "Autopsy" that the guards shot everyone and the stories to the contrary were a Big Lie. Yet the media line is still the govt line. It becomes clear after a little research that the media serves the State. CONSPIRACY THEORY 2: Many people who died during the final assault on the Branch Davidian community in Waco, TX, were killed by the FBI, not at the hands of Davidian members as reported. FACT 2: Medical examiner Nizaam Peerwani testified at the Davidian's trial that three women and six children in that concrete room died of suffocation *before* the fire. He suspects it was due to CS gas (Trial transcripts: 5979, 6029). Did you hear about that on the news? Nope. Ms. Reno said she does not think CS can be lethal to children, yet the label on all CS canisters says that CS used indoors can be fatal to children. Before the fire, a tank shot several * exploding * CS rounds point- blank into that small room filled with women and children. Mt Carmel was heavily bugged, so they had to know where the women and children were. Notice how these *facts* are censored from all news coverage. That is itself proof of conspiracy to cover-up mass murder. More: FACT 3: According to former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, infra-red (FLIR) video taken from the FBI's own helicopter proves that the FBI fired heavily with full-auto-machine-guns into the Mt Carmel center just as the fire started, which was when people would most likely try to exit. The FLIR video also proves that Davidians did NOT fire out at the tanks on that day as reported by the GovtMedia. That bit of disinformation was a key pretext to speeding up the demolition of the building. Ramsey Clark will be using this FLIR video in upcoming wrongful death suits against the so-called "Department of Justice." Ramsey Clark spoke about this FLIR video footage at the April 19, 1996 memorial gathering in Waco, TX. FACT 4: Toxicologist Dr. William Marcus, testified at the Congressional Hearings on Waco that the CS molecule contains a "cyanide radical" that could have been transdermally absorbed by the children due to their thin skin. CS also converts to hydrogen cyanide when burned. In fact, surviving bodies where found to contain very high levels of cyanide. Dr. Marcus also observed that CS is a heavy particle that was suspended in the air like a gas only for a brief period, carried by the flammable and toxic agent methyl chloride, thus CS particles fall quickly to the ground. The FBI calculated that if spread evenly over the known sq. feet of indoor space, the tons of CS pumped in should not have exceeded safe levels. But this is a deception because, as CS quickly falls, very high concentrations would be found toward the floor along with the children and fallen adults, in fact, 10 to 100x higher than if uniformly distributed. I believe that these facts prove the conspiracy theory that the govt killed many or most of the people who died on April 19, 1993 at Waco, TX. More than 20 years ago, Stephen Stayner was kidnapped by a pedophile and held as a sex slave for about ten years. His family lived in the area. Several years ago, three tourists were kidnapped in Yosemite. Questions of their fate gripped the nation for weeks. After the bodies of two of the victims were found, an RMNews Source told us that they had been beheaded before they were placed in the trunk of their rented car and burned. This piece of evidence had not been leaked to the media. RMNews did not leak it either. Months later, another murder was committed in Yosemite. Yosemite is approximately 30 miles from Merced. The murdered woman was also beheaded. When her killer was found, the similarity of the second killing to the Yosemite tourists found in the trunk, i.e. beheading; led to the solving of t he earlier murder. The man who committed these murders is the younger brother of Stephen Stayner. About a month ago, in the town of Merced, a naked man killed two children and terrorized three others with a pitchfork. And now, not more than 20 miles from Merced, a young man has killed his mother by beheading her. There is a pocket of "something" going on here. Either we have a Satanic cult, or a mind-control operation, or a pedophile operation, or a combination of all three. In an article on the front page of rumormillnews.com, called Operation Clydes Dale, Gunther Russbacher describes a mission to rescue children who were kidnapped by a Satanic pedophile group. We also know from books written by the victims of satanic pedophile cults that they were subjected to mind control. We also know that one or more of the young men who killed his school mates in the spate of school shootings, had attended satanic circles. We also know, that Colonel Michael Aquino, colleague of Anton Lavey, the founder of the satanic Church of Set, ran a preschool on the Presidio Army Base in San Francisco. He and his preschool were investigated by the city of San Francisco and the Army for pedophilia. Aquino has also been linked to many of the mind control operations that went on in Ft. Hood, Texas. Ft. Hood is near Killean, Texas, where Luby's restaurant saw the mass murder of 20 or more customers by a man who had been stationed at Ft. Hood. Both these towns are close to Waco where the CIA ran the Life Management Institute, LMI. LMI was a place where CIA operatives were trained in mind control techniques. The late Paul Wilcher, in his 100 page letter to Janet Reno, claimed that the Waco holocaust was the result of a mind control operation that had gone out of control. Wilcher believed that the Davidians were murdered to cover the tracks of this operation. And now, in today's headlines, we have another beheading. This one occurred in an area where bizarre murders and pedophilia have a track record. The Merced area is also mentioned in the book, The Last Circle. From talking with the author of that book, I know that an FBI agent ran a drug ring from that area. This makes me wonder if he knew that area had some kind of "hands off" policy regarding operations that looked like or were government sponsored. It is my belief that all around the country, there are pockets of government sponsored mind-control operations. I also believe that many of them hide under the cover of Satanic cults or drug operations. The reason for hiding mind control operations within satanic cults is the need for torture in creating multiple personality disorders, MPD. The statement came only hours after they confirmed that more than 200 children are believed to have been abused by a network of paedophiles in London care homes It was reported last night that Bill Malcolm, a known paedophile with previous convictions for child abuse, who later had other serious charges against him dropped on a legal technicality, was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head. A spokeswoman said the attack happened on the doorstep of Malcolm's home in Forest View Road, Forest Gate, yesterday evening. There are believed to be two white male suspects. "A contract killing is one area of inquiry police will be looking into, but it is too early to speculate now," she said. Earlier police confirmed that seven people have been arrested and 11 council workers suspended in the continuing police inquiry covering 20 years of sexual and physical abuse. The overnight temperatures had dipped to near record levels, as we gathered in the formal dining room to begin the special meal. I didn't think that there would be quite so many of us, as we began the process of finding our seats. As always, I sat at the head of the table, in one of the uncomfortable captains' chairs, all the while hoping that the somber meal would pass without incident from the children. I glanced in the direction of my eldest son, who at the time was age eight, but like many of the children his age, going on sixteen. He was an innocent, living in a world that didn't necessarily consider children to be innocent. Quickly, I stole a hurried glance to the man seated to my right. An expression of extreme pain crossed his brow, as he sank his eyes towards his dinner plate. None of the men in the room were able to meet each others eyes. (13:35) Two dead, one seriously wounded in Jerusalem shootings In a severe escalation of violence in the capital, a 30-year-old resident of Gilo was found murdered this morning near the neighboring Arab village of Beit Jala. In a separate shooting attack, an Israeli security man was killed and another was seriously wounded by Palestinians in eastern Jerusalem. It was Palestinians from Beit Jala who found the body of the Gilo resident, whose name has not been released for publication. They alerted the police who brought the body to the Abu Kabir forensic institute in Tel Aviv for examination. Police suspect tht the motive for the attack was nationalistic. The victim's body was found with multiple stab wounds and he had been shot . The police spokesman said at a briefing that the resident had been missing from his home for the past 48 hours. In the separate shooting attack across town, the two security men were hit at close range by a Palestinian assailant or assailants. One of the men was in critical condition and died shortly afterward. The other's condition was described as serious. They were hit in the head and neck. The men are 22- and 25-years-old and were employed by a private security company. The names have not been released pending notification of the families. Labor Minister Raanan Cohen ordered the branch closed Police believe this too was a nationalistically motivated attack although they are not ruling out a criminal motive. OC Northern Command warns of possible border attacks By David Rudge HAIFA (October 30) - The IDF is preparing for terror attacks along the Northern border and on Galilee communities following a series of serious incidents recently, including one yesterday in which shots were fired at soldiers on patrol. There were no casualties in the shooting near Moshav Zar'it in Western Galilee and the troops returned fire. There was a similar incident in the same area on Thursday in which a Lebanese gunman was reported to have been killed in the exchange of fire. Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh, OC Northern Command Maj.-Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi, and OC Home Front Command Maj.-Gen. Gaby Ofir met with heads of confrontation line communities yesterday. Ashkenazi and Sneh said there is reason to believe Hizbullah will try to heat-up the border and create a second front, in addition to the fighting in the territories. "We are preparing for the possibility of a resumption of [hostile] activities... The commanders of the various regions have met with security officers and leaders of the communities and I am here with you now," Ashkenazi said. "We need to be prepared for the possibility that terror attacks will resume along the border." Ashkenazi said Hizbullah is using Lebanon's claim to sovereignty over the Shaba farms region in the foothills of Mount Hermon as a pretext for its actions there. Security preparations are focused primarily on establishing a security fence along the entire length of the border. Ashkenazi said he hopes that most of the work will be completed by the end of November, although some sections, notably in the Mount Dov region, may not be completed until December. Red Pepper hosted the event; Harold Pinter was chair. Hilary Wainwright [then political editor of Red Pepper; now editor]: Friends and comrades, welcome to this first Red Pepper forum, and also to the magazine. We wanted a way to present or re-establish the art of public conversation. In a sense it's more creative, particularly in the complex times we're in, than relying on an adversarial debate. It's more participatory than just a lecture, and perhaps more personal and pleasurable than a traditional public meeting. It's appropriate that we're having this public conversation and that the Almeida Theatre is our forum. I'd like to thank Jonathan Kent and Ian McDiarmid for allowing us to have this theatre. I don't need to introduce any of the three participants. They're all people who are fearless in searching out the truth and then finding every possible platform to make it public. But the more they discover the truth, the more public platforms are closed to them. They're individuals who in their particular chosen craft have achieved the highest possible skills, but aren't bogged down by the narrow professionalism that has stifled British political and intellectual life. In that sense they're that desperately scarce resource, an engaged public intellectual. And just before handing over to Harold Pinter I want to remember another exemplary public intellectual - Ralph Miliband - who died last Saturday, and I think that his determination to create an independent and internationalist left will inspire Red Pepper and be one of the spirits behind this conversation. Harold Pinter: Thank you. Let me just say that what I intend to do is embark on this discussion for a while, and then in due course I'd like to invite you to participate and ask any questions of Noam Chomsky and John Pilger that you wish. So let me kick off by saying that John, this title, the New Cold War, was your suggestion because you believe, quite properly I think, that the term the New World Order had been over used and was rather tired. So could you define a little more precisely what you mean by the New Cold War? John Pilger: Well, of course it's heavily ironic: the original Cold War never ended. The Old Cold War was a war of attrition between the great nuclear powers, but it was a rhetorical stand-off, too. So often we were invited and manipulated to see it simply as a conflict between East and West, yet the Cold War always was, and still is, a war against the majority of humanity. It was a war fought with the blood of "expendable" people over strategic position, resources and it was a war of control - it was an imperialist war. The Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States fought in the Third World was relatively insignificant compared with the war fought by the US against people trying to improve their position in the world. The Soviets never matched the Americans as imperialists; they were lousy imperialists outside their own borders. The US established a network of control throughout the world in the postwar period, and that control has been shored up ever since. Now when the Communist world collapsed, of course the excuse to fight this war against the Third World collapsed with it, so other excuses had to be found, and these have never really been satisfactory. For instance, during the Gulf War, we went through a period of the "demon" excuse. Saddam Hussein was elevated to new Hitler status. This didn't really work but it did for a while; it certainly worked long enough for the US to lead a very considerable force against Iraq and cause the deaths of perhaps 200,000 people, wrecking a large part of the Middle East economy. There have also been excuses of the Noriega variety: the reason for invading Panama was that Noriega was an international drug dealer, child molester and pornographer, and whatever he was, he had to be caught. Well of course, those weren't the real reasons at all. The US was demonstrating its power yet again. Panama began the New Cold War, in which an Orwellian language would be employed that would make war equal to peace. For these actions against dictators who had previously been in the pay of, and with a client relationship to, the US, could be put down in the cause of a new peaceful world. But of course this was so transparent, there wasn't really any basis for people to take this on board, as many people hadn't been able to take on board the Communist threat, so I think we're back now to a more transparent Cold War - we're back to what the Cold War always was, a war against the Third World. -Caveat Lector- October 25, 2000 - Atlanta Journal Constitution American Voters Should Be Shocked by Treason of Gore Family Benefactor by Mona Charen IT IS HARD to conceive that a figure of such international stature as Armand Hammer, who died in 1990, could have been as contemptible a swindler as he apparently was, but such is the inescapable conclusion of "Dossier: The Secret History of Armand Hammer" by Edward Jay Epstein. A secret agent of the Soviet Union since 1921, Hammer managed to make and lose several fortunes during his long life, along the way skirting investigations of money laundering, fraud, conspiracy, espionage, bribery and countless other crimes by the FBI, the Justice Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and other government agencies. The tale of his serial betrayals (of his family, his religion, his country), endless self-aggrandizement, and success at courting the rich and famous makes fascinating reading, but there is a contemporary hook: Armand Hammer loomed very large in the lives of one of America's prominent political families, the Gores. Hammer was born in 1898, the son of Dr. Julius Hammer, a committed communist. Julius named his first son Armand for the communist symbol of an arm holding a hammer (Armand would later purchase the baking soda company because of the coincidence of names). While Julius served time in prison for an abortion that led to a woman's death, Armand (who had actually done the abortion) traveled to Moscow in his stead and met with Lenin in 1921. Impressed with his American fan, Lenin gave "Comrade Hammer" a concession to mine asbestos in the Ural Mountains, and also assigned him the sensitive task of distributing (and laundering) money for Soviet agents around the United States. Hammer worked closely with the infamous Feliks Dzerzhinski, the first head of the KGB, known then as the Cheka. Though the asbestos mine never did prove profitable and was later closed, it did provide a window into Hammer's character. Dragging their footsteps, our government agencies gradually followed in the media's wake. Starlink only made the news because the form of corn involved had not yet been approved for use in human food. Not that it had been disapproved. The EPA had said only that it needed more and better scientific information. And who discovered the widespread presence of the unapproved corn product? Not the people we pay to protect his or safeguard the food supply, but a band of underfunded, underrespected, and at times scorned food safety activists. In spite of its high media profile, Starlink is not the major problem. Government agencies are tracking it down, and food companies are way ahead of them, recalling their products. Most significant, everybody knows about Starlink. The problem lies with the more serious issues and hazards being ignored. For example, what was the response when Monsanto researchers notified FDA that the most widely used genetically engineered product, Roundup Ready soybeans, contained a surprise package-some unintended and unsuspected gene fragments? Apparently when Monsanto enabled soybean plants to survive spraying with their weed killer, Roundup, by splicing a gene into the bean's DNA, they tossed in a little extra. FDA's response: a big yawn. Media response: UK papers carried the story. A newswire service reported it in the US. Maybe some newspapers and news stations picked it up, but we did not see it anywhere except in the July News column of Whole Life Times. Although this story should have smeared egg on the faces of biotech cheerleaders who claim that genetic engineering is more precise than conventional breeding techniques, scientist to this day publish high-profile opinion pieces making this now-disproved assertion. What might explain the absence of the spotlight on these genetic hitchhikers in soy that pervades a majority of processed foods on the market? In soy on the market with FDA blessing? Possibly apathy. However, a document posted on GeneWatch UK website: www.genewatch.org, offers another possible explanation. In what Genewatch says is a leaked internal document from Monsanto, the writer brags that "The [Monsanto] Scientific Outreach network and the Technology Issues Team averted attacks on recently emerging biotechnology issues. The team developed rapid responses to avoid over-reaction to claims regarding...the characterization of additional non-functional DNA in Roundup Ready soybeans." Not to worry, says Monsanto's letter to the UK government. According to Monsanto spokesman Jeff Bergau the gene fragments were in RR beans when they passed safety assessments by US authorities in 1994. What else was in the beans when they passed safety assessments? Well, not Roundup. Unlike the beans on the market and in the food supply, the beans Monsanto researchers analyzed had not been treated with weed killer. Monsanto tried valiantly to silence one of the first critics to point out this discrepancy, Dr. Marc Lappe, Formerly head of the State of California's Hazard Evaluation System and a former tenured professor in Health Policy Ethics at the Univ of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. His book, AGAINST THE GRAIN, was the topic of a threatening letter from Monsanto to its original publisher in 1998. After the first publisher backed down, Common Courage Press published the book. If not Roundup, what DID the Roundup Ready soybeans contain when they were reviewed by FDA in 1994? For starters, higher levels of a known allergen. Apparently, Monsanto managed to keep some troubling information from becoming an issue. They just didn't report the data in their published study or the report they sent to the EPA. What information the published study and FDA report did reveal was camouflaged in a place readers were least likely to look for it. Sandwiched between lists of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, etc.) were levels of trypsin-inhibiter, an allergen which inhibits protein digestion and has been associated with enlarge cells in rat pancreases. Table 9 shows trypsin-inhibiter, levels that are 26.7 percent higher in the untoasted RR soybeans than in the conventional controls. The authors' discussion of table 9 did not mention trypsin-inhibiter levels, which meant no mention was

The meal and bonemeal was exported after March 1988, when the Government realised that feed made from slaughtered animals was the probable cause of the BSE epidemic in UK cattle. In July that year, the Government banned its use in Britain, and a week later officially informed the European Union, then the EEC, of its fears. But it wasn't until March 1996, eight years later, that a worldwide ban on the export of MBM, as it was called, came into force. No one knows how many cattle fed on the meal in those countries may now be incubating BSE. According to figures released by HM Customs and Excise, by 1989 the UK was exporting about 25,000 tonnes of MBM to EU countries and about 7,000 tonnes to nations outside Europe mostly in the Middle East and Africa. By 1991, sales of MBM to Europe dropped to zero. At the same time exports of MBM to the Third World had soared to 30,000 tonnes. Countries that continued to buy British MBM included Czechoslovakia, Nigeria, Thailand, South Africa, Kenya, Turkey, Liberia, Lebanon, Puerto Rico and Sri Lanka. Memos and minutes uncovered in the BSE inquiry reveal that the question of whether Britain should ban exports to non-EU countries led to ministerial arguments between John MacGregor and John Gummer inside the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food as well as a row between MAFF and the Department of Health. On 15 June 1989 chief veterinary officer Keith Meldrum wrote to the president of the British Cattle Veterinary Association saying: 'We do not consider it morally indefensible to export meat and bone to other countries since it may be used for feeding to pigs and poultry.' In January 1990, chief medical officer Sir Donald Acheson wrote to Meldrum warning him of the risks. He said: 'We should take steps to prevent these UK products being fed to ruminants in other countries... Unless such action is taken, the difficult problems we have faced with BSE may well occur in other countries. Surely it is short-sighted for us to risk being seen in future as having been responsible for the introduction of BSE to the food chain in other countries.' Previously in 1998 Gummer, who was a MAFF Minister at the time, is reported in departmental minutes as having said the UK had a 'moral obligation to ensure that importing countries were aware we did not permit the feeding of these products to ruminants.' But MacGregor disagreed. MAFF civil servant Alistair Cruickshank told the enquiry: 'At the meeting of 14 April 1988 MacGregor gave no indication that he agreed with Gummer's suggestion.' A more accurate version might well have read "The Woman Who Undid The Mideast Peace." It would have placed the blame squarely on the person who persuaded her close friend Sandy Berger and her husband, Bill Clinton, to push Barak into concessions that have triggered the Palestinians' new jihad against Israel. Make no mistake. Hillary Rodham Clinton has been a staunch supporter of the Palestine Liberation Front since her "romantic radical" undergraduate days at Wellesley. Those radicals â most of them the indulged sons and daughters of America's upper class â viewed Arafat, a committed terrorist who has transformed the Palestinian territory into a thugocracy, as a "freedom fighter." Some of those radicals, of course, grew up as they entered adulthood. Clinton, unfortunately, did not. She was the first major voice in the Clinton administration to call for a Palestinian state and, according to White House sources, she was the leading behind-the-scenes force for openly backing Barak over Netanyahu â an unprecedented interference in the internal politics of a friendly democracy. It was Clinton who gazed admiring as Suha Arafat committed a blood libel against the people of the Israel by accusing the Israeli government of employing toxic gas against Palestinian women and children. Far from denouncing such outrageous rhetoric, Clinton embraced Arafat's wife and kissed her cheek. White House sources also say the first lady was the first to suggest that the president dispatch political strategists James Carville and Stan Greenburg to Israel to aid Barak's election bid. They also acknowledge that it was she who suggested the administration pressure Barak to cede 90 percent of Israel's hard-won "buffer zones" on the West Bank and to agree to making Jerusalem a divided city. Worse, far worse, the administration acted on her advice in persuading Barak to assent to an open-door "right-of-return" policy for the sons and daughters of Palestinians living in Israel prior to 1948. That terribly naive concession has the potential to double Israel's population within a decade â giving the Palestinians the demographic upper hand in any election. Would they then vote for measures to guarantee Jews equitable status or would they vote to confiscate their lands and expel them? To ask the question is to answer it. An unlimited "right-to-return" concession would mean the end of Israel as a Jewish religious state, and Clinton surely knows that. Is it any wonder that she was booed vigorously at a recent rally of Jewish Democrats and is studiously avoiding any uncontrolled public gatherings where her presence would evoke a similar response? In fact, if her longtime pal Bob Shrum hadn't persuaded Al Gore to leapfrog Joe Lieberman over several front-running vice-presidential candidates, she could well be tied or trailing. Rick Lazio, the youthful congressman from Long Island, still trails Clinton in some statewide polls, but he is starting to pick up steam as he campaigns in traditionally Republican upstate New York. It would not beggar anyone's imagination to see Lazio squeak by on Election Day. If that happens, part of his boost over the top will come from upstate Republicans returning to the fold. Falcons unlucky against Irish with overtime 34-31 loss by Dave Kellogg U.S. Air Force Academy Athletic Department SOUTH BEND, IND (AFPN) -- Notre Dame's Glenn Earl was supposed to guard against a fake as Air Force's Dave Adams lined up to kick a game-winning 28-yard field goal with three seconds left in regulation. Instead, Earl jumped and got a hand on Adams' kick that set up a subsequent Irish touchdown in overtime to beat the Falcons, 34-31, Oct. 28. The winning score came on a nine-yard reverse by Notre Dame's Joey Getherall. "I wasn't really supposed to leap," Earl said, "but I got a little excited. I hope they don't dock me for blocking that kick." Adams was surprised by the block. He kicked a 34-yard field goal with 1:56 left to play to tie the game and cap an 18-point fourth quarter comeback for Air Force. "When it came off my foot, I thought I hit it straighter and higher than any of my previous kicks. I felt real good and was actually stunned when I saw a guy get a hand on it." Smith The federal government is collecting cookies from your computer, in violation of its own policy, according to a newly released General Accounting Office report. Titled "Internet Privacy: Federal Agency Use of Cookies," the report shows that the government is collecting "persistent" cookies to track Internet users. Cookies are files stored on a computer by Internet browser software when a website is visited. According to the GAO report, persistent cookies "can be used to track users' browsing behavior by identifying their Internet addresses." The federal agencies that collect cookies include the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Postal Service, Small Business Administration, U.S. Forest Service and Office of Personnel Management. Agencies not checked in the random survey include the Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency and Department of Defense. The White House responded to the report by noting that the administration had banned the collection of Internet cookies in June. "Cookies should not be used unless there is clear and conspicuous notice, a compelling need to gather the data on the site; appropriate and publicly disclosed privacy safeguards for handling of information derived from cookies; and personal approval by the head of the agency," wrote Sally Katzen, the deputy director of the Executive Office of the President in an Oct. 19 letter to the General Accounting Office. The letter from the White House drew a sharp response from privacy advocates, one of which said the federal cookies policy failure is a small example of a much larger problem. "Cookies are something very public and easy to monitor," noted David Kopel, research director for the Colorado-based Independence Institute. "Just what is going on when nobody is watching is a better question. "Despite the White House mandate, you have to wonder whether there are other things going on behind the scenes -- projects withheld from the public view such as the recent FBI 'Carnivore' program, secret ATF databases on firearms owners and numerous secret wiretaps. Who knows what is going on?" said Kopel. "The report is very disturbing and shows how far behind federal agencies are at understanding the technological and civil-liberties issues underlying Internet privacy," stated Barry Fagin, a privacy and telecommunications adviser working for RMI.NET. "If a commercial website does something with a cookie that you don't like, or if they don't disclose their privacy policy to your satisfaction, you don't have to use it. Government sites, however, are often the sole source of information and have legal force behind them. So the standards for privacy protection should be much more rigorous than the private sector. In practice, at least right now, things are exactly backwards," he said. "The present administration's commitment to civil liberties and privacy issues has been, in a word, terrible," asserted Fagin. There is evidence supporting Fagin's assessment of the Clinton-Gore administration. For example, Vice President Al Gore has previously endorsed federal government monitoring of computer communications. In 1994, Gore endorsed a government-designed computer "Clipper" chip intended to monitor all secure computer communications, according to a letter written by the vice president. "We also want to assure users of key escrow encryption products that they will not be subject to unauthorized electronic surveillance," noted the vice president in his July 20, 1994, letter to Cantwell. "As we have done with the Clipper chip, future key escrow schemes must contain safeguards to provide for key disclosures only under legal authorization and should have audit procedures to ensure the integrity of the system. Escrow holders should be strictly liable for releasing keys without legal authorization," wrote Gore. Yet, in 1994, government officials were keenly aware that the Clipper chip design that Gore endorsed did not have safeguards against unauthorized surveillance. According to a top secret 1992 memo, FBI official J. R. Davis, wrote, "The most serious concern is that the scenario regarding the use of the 'exploitable' chip could surface publicly." In 1993, Benita A. Cooper, NSA associate administrator for management systems and facilities, wrote "There is no way to prevent the NSA from routinely monitoring all (CLIPPER) encrypted traffic. Moreover, compromise of the NSA keys, such as in the Walker case, could compromise the entire (CLIPPER) system." The GAO cookie report drew no reaction from the various political camps. The Middle East, After the Deluge In the territories, the violence will not end, nor will it decide anything. After weeks of careening out of control, both the Israeli and Palestinian political systems now point to extended, sub-critical conflict in the West Bank and Gaza. Attacks by Palestinian commandos and suicide teams inside Israel are likely. The violence promises to be extended because there is not the political will to suppress it; neither is there enough violence to force either side to capitulate. But the damage done by this deluge is extensive. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, heir to the peace initiatives of the Rabin and Peres governments, has lost the ability to govern. A divided Palestinian leadership pursues two goals: cleaving Israel from the United States and igniting fundamentalism in the rest of the Arab world. We are not back to 1973, but we are back to the intifadah of the 1980s. That this is good news is a measure of just how bad things might have been. In Israel, the Barak government's ruling coalition lies effectively shattered. But at a more fundamental level, the extent of the fighting with the fact Palestinian police joined in has created a belief that institutionalized peace with the Palestinian National Authority is impossible. Israelis are more focused on suppressing Palestinian violence than accommodating Palestinian aspirations. Nothing is so striking as the fact that Barak has been forced to reach out to Ariel Sharon, architect of the invasion of Lebanon and advocate of the Jewish settlements of the territories, to form a government of national unity. First, such governments have historically though not always been formed in Israel during times of extreme danger, when ordinary political debate is muted. Second, in reaching out to Sharon the antithesis of the Rabin-Peres perspective Barak acknowledges he is no longer able to govern just 18 months after his election. Sharon's terms are stiff. Effectively, he seeks veto power on any agreement with the Palestinians. The price of a government of national unity is handing Palestinian relations to Sharon. In an odd way, this might provide the only hope for mitigating the conflict. Sharon and the Likud party are more convinced than ever that genuine accommodation with the Palestinians is impossible unless there is a fundamental shift in Palestinian political attitudes. Equally important, Likud politicians are prepared to maintain the current policy until such a shift occurs. In this, Barak has little choice. If he doesn't form a new coalition government, he will be forced to hold new elections he is unlikely to win. In either case, Likud will grab control again. The man whom Palestinians regard as the instigator of the crisis will either lead or be a major figure in the next government. The landscape has changed so much that a shift in the Israeli government will make little difference to the Palestinians. Few voices in the community are left to speak either for the Oslo Accords or the peace process. No one knows what Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat really thinks or wants other than Arafat, but it is clear he felt he had no choice but to become spokesman for the uprising. Within the Palestinian community, the consensus is the Israelis were never serious about concluding an institutionalized peace treaty. The Palestinians want a state but now they will not get one. Before the Camp David meetings, the Palestinians could kid themselves into believing, in time, such a state would be created and a settlement would be reached over Jerusalem. After Camp David and the resulting torrent, no Palestinian can believe that. Today, the community is divided between those who want to maintain and intensify current levels of violence and those who wish to see the violence subside. It is not even clear that the latter group is in the majority, and therefore it is not clear that Arafat and his governing apparatus can stand. To make the Americans happy, Arafat has had his intelligence staff cooperate with the Israelis, but this may be mere show for American consumption. The Palestinian National Authority is not in a position to offer real cooperation. Now, the Palestinians will try to achieve two ends. One is fighting for the hearts and minds of the American public and the next U.S. administration. The only hope for statehood is to create massive strains between Israel and the

America Online, http://www.aol.com, has been known to gun owners for some time for their support of anti-gun organizations and policies. They've donated large sums of money to liberal, anti-gun Democrat organizations to support people like Dianne Feinstein, Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy. More recently, theyâve canceled accounts for firearms related web sites on the grounds that such material is no different than âpornographyâ. Never mind that guns are entirely legal items owned by tens of millions of Americans. Never mind that AOL doesnât seem to think that disgustingly offensive rock music is a problem. Now, in another step towards the final elimination of gun owners from âcivilized societyâ, AOL has fired three exemplary workers for having firearms in their cars in order to go shooting at a range on their own time! The three employees are Luke Hansen, Jason Melling and Paul Carlson. All three worked as âpartner technical consultantsâ at AOLâs Ogden, Utah facility, doing higher level technical support. The Ogden facility employs about 850 people, according to AOLâs web site, and âhandles a range of technical, billing, third-party and sales callsâ. According to Mr. Hansen, they had worked at AOL for two to four years, and all had good employee records and good reviews from their supervisors. Unfortunately (at least from AOLâs point of view), the three young men also enjoy shooting. On September 14, 2000, Luke, Jason and Paul met after work in the AOL parking lot to go shooting at the gun range near Eden, Utah. In order to carpool to the range, Jason and Paul transferred their firearms from their own cars to Lukeâs truck, a matter of carrying them a few yards. Jason transferred a .30-06 hunting rifle and a 9mm Smith Wesson handgun. Both firearms were unloaded and in cases. Paul transferred a .45 long Colt âcowboy styleâ pistol and a 7.63 X .39 KBI. The Colt was in a holster, and both firearms were unloaded. The handguns had trigger locks in place. Lukeâs firearms were in his truck and he never touched Jason or Paulâs firearms. At no time did they brandish or handle the firearms in a threatening or unsafe manner. Luke and Paul hold valid Utah concealed weapons permits, and Jason is in the process of obtaining one, so all three are familiar with safe handling and Utah laws. Although all three of them worked during the subsequent three days, nothing about the firearms was mentioned. However, on Monday, Sept. 18, all three were fired for âviolating AOLâs employee policyâ which states that firearms are forbidden on company property, including the parking lot. According to Luke, although no one complained, an overzealous security guard saw the firearms on a video surveillance tape and reported the alleged violations. AOL does have its firearms policy posted inside the front and back doors of the building, stating that firearms are not permitted in the building or in the parking lot, and all three employees were aware of this policy. However, they were also aware that AOLâs policy violates Utah state law. AOL states that it is a âsecure facilityâ, although under Utah law secure facilities can be designated only by the legislature, and include places such as courts, airports, mental health facilities, and prisons. By definition, a place open to the public cannot be a âsecure facilityâ, and AOLâs parking lot is open to the public. (Actually, itâs a group of marked stalls in a public parking lot.) In addition, a secure facility is required to provide locked safe storage for anyone lawfully carrying a firearm, and to accept responsibility for stored firearms, something that AOL clearly was not equipped to do. On a previous occasion about two months ago, the three men had also transferred firearms after work, and had been reported to management. At that time, Luke Hansen met with AOLâs Ogden General Manager, Sarah McElwee. He explained to Ms. McElwee that while AOL might be able to restrict firearms in the building, it could not restrict firearms in a public parking lot, and that AOL did not meet the criteria for a âsecure facilityâ. Mr. Hansen says he thought the matter was resolved at the time, although no written changes were made to AOLâs policy. Ironically, Ms. McElweeâs husband is known for the very fine firearms he makes! As a result of the firing, Paul is still looking for work. Jason, who has a wife and just bought a new home, has found a new job. So has Luke, who is expecting his first child in February. It appears that AOL management, and especially Ric Waiters, the AOL manager who fired the three, want to force the issue of illegal, politically correct, gun bans. Fortunately for gun owners everywhere, Luke Hansen, Jason Melling and Paul Carlson are not going to take this

The Democratic National Committee's website (www.dnc.org), endorsed by Al Gore, attacks Republican Presidential nominee George W. Bush for being "soft" on homeschooling. That same website parrots the agenda of the NEA, the nation's biggest teachers' union, insisting that all teachers of all children should be required to possess state certification. That requirement would KILL homeschooling. It renews the threat of HR 6, which homeschoolers helped to kill in 1994. That bill would have required the same thing -- state certification. That means, unless you spend many thousands of dollars and several years taking courses in how to teach, you will not be able to teach your child at home. That bill passed through the House Education Committee with every Democrat voting for it, and every Republican voting against it. George Miller (D-Cal), then chairman of that committee, will become its chairman again if the Democrats win control of the House, and has vowed to reintroduce the bill. This time, the Democrats would not be facing the imminent disaster they faced in the 1994 elections, when Bill Clinton was at his lowest in popularity. They will have little to fear. Former feminist, now Christian professor Elizabeth Genovese, warns that public funded daycare is the next arena of assault on the traditional family, and will make it more and more difficult for tax-strapped families to keep the mother in the home, and more and more economically enticing to leave children with others. That is why the left wants to destroy the Boy Scouts. President Clinton's Justice Department recently decided to examine whether the Boy Scouts should be banned from National Parks, because of their refusal to admit homosexual scoutmasters. Homosexuals do not mince words when they assert that the traditional family, and traditional manhood and womanhood, must be overcome. That is why they despise homeschooling. John Taylor Gatto has written a long article on the fight one small Vermont village when the last one- room, public schoolhouse in the state. The powerful Vermont chapter of the NEA crushed them. When the left cannot abide even a traditional PUBLIC school, what makes us think they will be friendlier with us homeschoolers? To a tyrant any deviation from conformity, no matter how apparently small, is a threat that must be wiped out. We homeschoolers have for a Presidential candidate the governor of the most homeschooling-friendly state in the country, opposed by a party that has cast its lot with: the NEA, the feminists, who despise the traditional family, want nationalized curricula designed to teach children what they should believe. NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO BE COMPLACENT. NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO SAY, "I DON'T UNDERSTAND POLITICS!" or "WHY SHOULD I VOTE FOR THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS?" For Christians especially, the choice is acutely clear. When will we get another opportunity like the present? Hillary Clinton once compared the traditional family to SLAVERY. And so I urge you, contact your friends and relatives in other states --those who are friendly to homeschooling. Ask them to consider, this year, whether the freedom of the family is worth preserving. This election will be close! Of course you must vote as your conscience dictates. But I pray that you will think of homeschooling as a touchstone -- as a way of telling what the two parties, and the two Presidential nominees, stand for. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles police officer responding to a
noisy Halloween party at a mansion north of Beverly Hills shot and killed an
actor, who police said pointed what turned out to be a fake gun at him,
police said Sunday.
Anthony Dwain Lee, 39, who appeared in the 1997 movie "Liar, Liar" and
on several television shows including "NYPD Blue," was shot several times
early Saturday by Officer Tarriel Hopper who fired through a glass door
from an exterior hallway, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a
statement.
The shooting took place about 1 a.m. at a crowded party attended by
scores of costumed guests, many of them actors and other entertainment
industry professionals, at a mansion known as "the Castle" for its spires
and stained-glass windows, the Los Angeles Times reported.
It was not immediately known who owned the house or if the owner
attended the party.
"He was a Buddhist. He hated violence. It is amazing he died this way,"
Mitch Hale, a writer whose play "Buffalo Soldier" starred Lee and earned
him a local acting award, told the newspaper. "He was an incredibly gifted
actor and person. It's devastating ... Why did they shoot someone at a
Halloween party?"
Police said Hopper and Officer Natalie Humphreys were attempting to find
the owner of the home in the Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles after
neighbors complained about the party. The officers were at the rear of the
house when Hopper looked into a small room and spotted three people.
Police said that when Lee saw the officers he pulled what looked like a
handgun and pointed it at Hopper, who, in fear for his life, fired several
shots from his service pistol, wounding Lee, the LAPD statement said.
Lee was later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Officer Charlotte Broughton, a spokeswoman for the LAPD, said many of
the party-goers were in costume. One guest told the Times that some of
guests were dressed as cops, but it was not known if Lee was wearing a
costume. It was also not clear if Lee realized Hopper was a real officer with
a real gun.
The police department said Lee's supposed weapon was a fake, "a replica
semiautomatic pistol, dark in color."
The shooting is being investigated by the LAPD's Robbery-Homicide
Division and a team from the district attorney's office.
Another party-goer, Robert Hull, told the Times, "It was a shock that an
officer would shoot at such a party. This was an exclusive party with
security. Some of these people are making six figures, and this officer saw
a toy gun at a Halloween costume party and opened fire."
Another of the victim's friends, Mary Lin, told the newspaper, "His biggest
fear was getting killed by cops, because he's a tall black man."
Lee's friends said on Sunday they were planning to hold a candlelight vigil
in his honor Monday evening.

The new law would allow the "free circulation" of genetically engineered foods into the country without any restriction, safeguarding or certification process. This would be a green light for transnational corporations to experiment, produce, import and commercialize transgenetic organisms without having to worry about the effects to the local economy, health, or environment. According to the CDC (Center of Defense of the Consumer), Monsanto and it's local subsidiary Semillas SA, which ex- president Christiani owns, are the financial interests behind the law. The financial interests of this company, which has unsurpassed control over the seed industry, and the Seed Law would create disastrous social effects. BACKGROUND: Genetically engineered products are usually advertised as a way of ending world hunger, but in reality have been used to control world food production. This phenomenon must be placed within the context of neo-liberal globalization. Large transnational companies utilize patents or Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights to further control the production of food. Patenting and property rights are an essential ingredient in the biotechnology industry. By patenting plants and seeds, once the modified seeds are introduced into a community the traditional communal way of farming by collecting seeds and replanting the next year will be illegal. Through the TRIPs agreement, which was established at the Uruguay Round Agreement, foreign corporations can also appropriate valuable agricultural and medicinal biodiversity from "developing countries". The TRIPs agreement states that all members of the WTO (World Trade Organization) must allow patenting or another "effective" system. Anything that can be genetically manipulated can be patented as private property by transnational corporations. The TRIPs agreement was conceived by the Intellectual Property Committee which was made up of powerful companies with global financial interests. At the time they were Bristol Meyers, Dupont, General Electric, General Motors, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Johnson and Johnson, Merck, Monsanto, Pfizer, Rockwell and Time-Warner. Any country that violates "international standards" of property rights can face the wrath of sanctions, fines, or other means of inflicting damage upon non-abiding nations. In order to gain world control of food production, local and traditional producers must be driven out. The new market for the transnationals must be "opened up". There are various ways in which this done. Often, the World Bank and the IMF encourage or demand that countries not only buy genetically engineered seeds but also that they plant non- traditional crops for export instead of producing for their needs (often times the "owner" of the exports is a private transnational). This practice often ends in disaster such as in Mexico and Zimbabwe where both countries were "advised" to halt production of the local food staple. Another way of displacing the local producers is by "dumping". Dumping is the practice of "dumping" mass quantities of certain foreign staple food products on a community with the goal of stopping local food production which is meant to be consumed by the local communities and opening the "new market". Such is the case right now in El Salvador. According to the CDC, free genetically engineered seeds are being distributed to farmers in order to create dependency. In the case of El Salvador, this law would exacerbate the already grave situation which confronts the small and medium size farmers in this country. Finally, without any required testing or protocols in place "developing" countries turn into laboratories for genetic experiments which result in health hazards and environmental devastation. Studies have shown that genetically modified foods are already on the shelves in the supermarkets of El Salvador without having followed the appropriate norms and regulations. If a country has too high of standards a dispute can be brought to the World Trade Organization. The committee is made up of "trade experts" not scientists or doctors who study the social effects. In the end the determining factor is if its good for "trade" not if its good for the people. Dragging their footsteps, our government agencies gradually followed in the media's wake. Starlink only made the news because the form of corn involved had not yet been approved for use in human food. Not that it had been disapproved. The EPA had said only that it needed more and better scientific information. And who discovered the widespread presence of the unapproved corn product? Not the people we pay to protect his or safeguard the food supply, but a band of underfunded, underrespected, and at times scorned food safety activists. In spite of its high media profile, Starlink is not the major problem. Government agencies are tracking it down, and food companies are way ahead of them, recalling their products. Most significant, everybody knows about Starlink. The problem lies with the more serious issues and hazards being ignored. For example, what was the response when Monsanto researchers notified FDA that the most widely used genetically engineered product, Roundup Ready soybeans, contained a surprise package-some unintended and unsuspected gene fragments? Apparently when Monsanto enabled soybean plants to survive spraying with their weed killer, Roundup, by splicing a gene into the bean's DNA, they tossed in a little extra. FDA's response: a big yawn. Media response: UK papers carried the story. A newswire service reported it in the US. Maybe some newspapers and news stations picked it up, but we did not see it anywhere except in the July News column of Whole Life Times. Although this story should have smeared egg on the faces of biotech cheerleaders who claim that genetic engineering is more precise than conventional breeding techniques, scientist to this day publish high-profile opinion pieces making this now-disproved assertion. What might explain the absence of the spotlight on these genetic hitchhikers in soy that pervades a majority of processed foods on the market? In soy on the market with FDA blessing? Possibly apathy. However, a document posted on GeneWatch UK website: www.genewatch.org, offers another possible explanation. In what Genewatch says is a leaked internal document from Monsanto, the writer brags that "The [Monsanto] Scientific Outreach network and the Technology Issues Team averted attacks on recently emerging biotechnology issues. The team developed rapid responses to avoid over-reaction to claims regarding...the characterization of additional non-functional DNA in Roundup Ready soybeans." Not to worry, says Monsanto's letter to the UK government. According to Monsanto spokesman Jeff Bergau the gene fragments were in RR beans when they passed safety assessments by US authorities in 1994. What else was in the beans when they passed safety assessments? Well, not Roundup. Unlike the beans on the market and in the food supply, the beans Monsanto researchers analyzed had not been treated with weed killer. Monsanto tried valiantly to silence one of the first critics to point out this discrepancy, Dr. Marc Lappe, Formerly head of the State of California's Hazard Evaluation System and a former tenured professor in Health Policy Ethics at the Univ of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. His book, AGAINST THE GRAIN, was the topic of a threatening letter from Monsanto to its original publisher in 1998. After the first publisher backed down, Common Courage Press published the book. If not Roundup, what DID the Roundup Ready soybeans contain when they were reviewed by FDA in 1994? For starters, higher levels of a known allergen. Apparently, Monsanto managed to keep some troubling information from becoming an issue. They just didn't report the data in their published study or the report they sent to the EPA. What information the published study and FDA report did reveal was camouflaged in a place readers were least likely to look for it. Sandwiched between lists of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, etc.) were levels of trypsin-inhibiter, an allergen which inhibits protein digestion and has been associated with enlarge cells in rat pancreases. Table 9 shows trypsin-inhibiter, levels that are 26.7 percent higher in the untoasted RR soybeans than in the conventional controls. The authors' discussion of table 9 did not mention trypsin-inhibiter levels, which meant no mention was

Professor Arthur Noble The Pope's ecumenical dupes got a rude shock on September 5 when his self-styled 'infallible Holiness', in an official document called Dominus Iesus, questioned the validity of Protestant Churches and instructed his bishops not to use the term 'sister churches' with reference to them. The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has now arrogantly pronounced that henceforth non-Roman-Catholics are to be designated as "ecclesial communities" with "defects". It declares that churches that lack a "valid Episcopate [bishops] and the genuine and integral substance of the Eucharistic mystery are not churches in the proper sense"; and a Vatican letter to bishops, released the same week, calls for Protestants to be "evangelised". The American Crosswalk News site summed it up in the headline: "Protestants are not our equals, says the Vatican." It was on a par with Hitler's comments about the Jews. The chief ingredient of this latest outrageous pronouncement by the Roman impostor is nothing short of blatant sectarianism a predictable complement to the flagrant racism of his beatification of Pius IX. Once again, the congenital religious intolerance behind the mask of the Church of Rome's smiling ecumenism has been exposed: her doctrinal fascism renders her hypocritically guilty of the very accusation that she is so fond of levelling against those who refuse to bow the knee to her theological drivel. George Carey, the spiritual leader of the world's 70 million Anglicans and hitherto a loud and pathetic parrot of the Pope, has expressed his "dismay". No wonder: he failed to take heed of the warning that Rome does not change, and is now suddenly confronted with the reality that the term 'separated brethren' was merely a ruse and the original designation of 'heretics' is now official. Carey has learned of his error the hard way. He has reacted by saying that the worldwide Anglican Communion "does not for one moment accept that its orders of ministry and Eucharist are deficient in any way", but "believes itself to be a part of the one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church of Christ." Protestant leaders in Germany have also been rudely awakened. Manfred Kock, chairman of the Council of the Evangelical Church of Germany, told ZDF television: "The declaration suggests that the Catholic and the Protestant Churches are not on equal terms with each other." These leaders, be it noted, are the dupes who on October 31, 1999, signed the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification between the Lutheran World Federation and the Roman Catholic Church, believing it to be the reconciliatory seal of 30 years of so-called 'dialogue' between the two Churches. Irony of ironies! The Vatican's boot-licking World Council of Churches itself is worried that the ecumenical relationships of the past 100 years may now be "lost" or "hindered" by what its professing 'theologian' Tom Best calls "language which precludes further discussion of the issues"; and even John Wilkins, editor of the Roman Catholic newspaper The Tablet, has described the declaration as "enormously negative". Valdo Benecchi, President of the Methodist Evangelical Churches of Italy and an on-the-spot connoisseur of the Pope's machinations in that country, was quick to recognise the Vatican's latest confidence trick. Almost echoing the warning of last October by the 150 German Academics who opposed the LWF-Vatican Declaration, he said: "Salvation through Christ is not deposited in one religion only. This puts only the Catholic Church at the centre, but especially the Catholic hierarchy." The Southern Baptist Convention, the largest U.S. Protestant denomination, has also recognised the contrivance. Jerry Rankin, President of its International Mission Board, protested: "Salvation comes by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ and Christ alone not through any institutional church body, be it Baptist, Catholic, or otherwise. [ ] That's why we have always sent missionaries, even to 'Catholic' countries, because people come to salvation only through personal faith in Jesus Christ. That is the message of the Christian gospel according to the Scriptures, and that is the message shared worldwide by our missionaries." Popery, despite her modernist garb, remains unchanged. The arrogance of this latest pronouncement is astounding. It describes all churches since the Protestant Reformation as not being "churches in the proper sense", while in reality it is the Church of Rome that is not a church at all, but a colossal political and financial organisation. Adam Smith, in his famous study The Wealth of Nations, calls it "the most formidable combination that ever was formed against the authority and security of civil government as well as against the liberty, reason and happiness of mankind."

Finally, Carmichael told them in a mild voice that he didn't really think they were in the best position to tell blacks how to run their revolution. So it is with the Gorey media, which has been working overtime on the theme that a vote for Nader is a vote for Bush. Notably absent, of course, are any journalists with the slightest empathy for what Nader and the Green Party are about. Hence the assumption that the Nader campaign is only reactive rather than building something new; hence the ignorance of third party history; and hence the near total emphasis on what the situation means to Gore as opposed to what it means to the Greens and to America. Interestingly, the arguments the Gories use are remarkably similar to those made during the impeachment of Al's mentor, WJ Clinton. If you will recall, we were told then that right-thinking people should ignore the evidence, behave like good hack politicians, and support the Democrat come hell or high water. Which is why, perhaps, we now find the same Silicon Valley types who raised $13 million to defeat members of the impeachment committee at the forefront of the get-Nader campaign. One of the co-founders of this operation was responsible for a 13,000 e-mail spam attack on Nader's headquarters. The Gories have also tried to sell the absurd notion that Democrats in safe Gore states should trade their votes by promising to cast a ballot for Nader in return for someone promising not to do so in a tightly fought state. This, of course, works on the honor system, with which Gore and the Democratic Party have little familiarity these days. In fact, it was not long after this scam got underway that one Democratic operative was sending around an e-mail suggesting that people trade their votes not once but up to a hundred times. After all, it was pointed out, who will know? Apparently, the Democrats not only consider the Naderites dangerous radicals but rubes as well. Happily, there is no evidence that any of this is working. In fact, all of us who have written on the subject, suggests reader George Cotner, may have misjudged the situation. He sends along a UPI article that states, "The Nader campaign says half of the candidate's supporters are disenfranchised or independent voters who would not be likely to vote for either Bush or Gore if Nader was not in the race. Another 20 percent of Nader's support is Republican, the campaign claims, meaning that Nader is not having a disproportionate impact on potential vote results for Gore." Whether Nader is really hurting Gore or not, what the latter seeks from the Nader voters is precisely the sort of political cynicism that has driven so many away from the Democratic Party and that we can expect to see more of should Gore be elected. How bad is this cynicism? Pretty bad, judging from the upcoming issue of Esquire with a Bill Clinton smirking on the cover in a spread-leg come-hither-Monica pose. Inside it doesn't get any better. Clinton even declares that Republicans owe him an apology for the impeachment. Don't wait for any of the campaign press to ask Gore whether he agrees. Nonetheless, Gore's troubles are far more rooted in Clinton than in Nader. This election is, among other things, the second impeachment trial with Gore as the stand-in defendant. The Democrats could have avoided the problem by nominating an honest candidate unsoiled by the scum of the last eight years. And Gore could have minimized the problem by setting himself free of Clinton a long time ago. Instead, Gore and the Democrats have created yet another myth: that it's Ralph Nader's fault. The general staff also believes the Lebanon front could heat up again soon. Regarding Lebanon, the opinion of the general staff is that hostile parties in Lebanon, whether Palestinians or Hizb'Allah, may soon join the fighting with the backing of either or both Syria and Iran. Israeli officials are warning citizens to brace for a new wave of violence, and they have made clear they will blame Arafat for any acts of terror. This devil will blow up buses and will damage the Palestinian image in world opinion." COORDINATION OF TERROR BETWEEN HAMAS AND PLO: A Hamas spokesman in Gaza, quoted in Wednesday's WASHINGTON POST (page A01), said that representatives of Hamas and the 'Palestinian Authority' (PLO) meet daily to coordinate their activities. The paper writes that Arafat is working closely with leaders of both the Hamas and the Islamic Jihad terrorist organizations - leaders whose release from prison Arafat ordered at the beginning of the current violence almost a month ago. ARUTZ-7 has learned that some of the released terrorists are being hidden in PLO buildings. The ASSOCIATED PRESS similarly reported Wednesday that representatives of Hamas and other Palestinian groups have been directing the Palestinian protests. "The existence of the steering committees ... would undermine Arafat's contention that the Palestinian protests of the past month have entirely been a spontaneous outburst of anger against Israel," reported the AP. Meanwhile, clashes on Saturday included at least a dozen shooting attacks on Israeli soldiers and a homemade bomb hurled at a border police patrol. Also Saturday, the Palestine Liberation Front - the terrorist group that hijacked the Achille Lauro cruise ship and killed an American passenger in 1985 - declared Saturday that it was resuming attacks on Israel. In Lebanon, the leader of Hizb'Allah urged Palestinians to move from stone-throwing to suicide missions. Also Saturday, an Israeli was shot and his body burned near Ram'Allah, the PLO said. Israel's military said only that the body had been returned to Israeli authorities and that the matter was under investigation. But ISRAEL TV quoted Israeli police officials as saying they had "reasonable grounds" to believe the man was lynched in a political killing. An inside look at Clinton-Gore press tactics -- -- © 2000 WorldNetDaily.com WASHINGTON -- Not a day goes by that I'm not asked by people across the country -- and countless Canadians, too, interestingly enough -- why the Washington press corps never gets to the bottom of the scandals that have plagued this administration. Stories break and then just drift away with little or no follow-up, they complain. In the end, no one is held accountable, and the stench of graft remains. Most readers just chalk it up to pro-Democrat bias among the press corps. To be sure, a lopsided nine out of 10 Washington reporters voted for Bill Clinton and Al Gore. With a personal stake in their success, they may have incentive to look the other way when they come across a scandal. But I've found it's more complicated than that. Many mainstream reporters, usually the younger and hungrier ones, have tried to zero in on corruption, and some have even followed up on scandal stories broken in the conservative or alternative press. It's not for lack of trying. The problem lies not so much with the press, but with the dishonest press secretaries the White House has installed at just about every federal agency to block and bully the press. (See, for instance, the exclusive transcript of a revealing interview with Cabinet press secretary below). Yes, press secretaries are hired in part to spin negative stories. During scandal coverage, the less information they have to give, the better. That's always been standard operating procedure, whether it was Marlin Fitzwater, James Brady or Jody Powell in the White House hot seat. But they're also paid by taxpayers to assist the press in letting the American people know what's really going on in their government. So they have an obligation to tell the truth when reporters push the right buttons. That's been the game: Ask the right question and more often than not you can count on getting a truthful answer. But the Clinton administration has changed the rules. Now, even if your question is bull's-eye accurate, you're not guaranteed confirmation. More likely, you will get a blanket denial -- even from the president himself: "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." If you follow up with more detailed questions, expect to be brow-beaten into backing off the story. If you pursue a really damaging scandal, expect to be bullied, blackballed, frozen out, denied access, banned or even smeared. Your producer will get an earful and your editor will be asked to keep you on a shorter leash. Even when the press teams up and demands information, they are stonewalled. Witness the current clamoring for the list of dates and times when Hillary Clinton's hundreds of guests recently stayed in the Lincoln Bedroom and at Camp David. The data would test the Senate candidate's spin that the sleepovers weren't a reward for campaign donations -- an illegal quid pro quo -- but merely a chance for the first couple to spend time with friends. If the dates and times don't match the dates and times Bill and Hillary were in the White House or at Camp David, it would put the lie to her explanation. But the public will never know the truth without the list, and the White House is basically telling everyone to go to hell. You'd expect to see such defiance and strong-arm tactics in Moscow and Beijing, not here. But that's what reporters have had to deal with the past eight years. For a recent example, just listen to my Oct. 24 interview with Commerce Department Press Secretary Morrie Goodman. It crystallizes for the public how this regime operates behind the scenes when reporters get too close to the truth. Here is a transcript of the give-and-take, which starts with Goodman answering his cell phone: A: Morrie Goodman. Q: Hey Morrie, thanks for calling, sorry I missed you. It's Paul Sperry. A: Yeah, hey Paul, what's up? Q: Can you check something out? I know you're out of pocket today, but -- A: Well, I'm only out of pocket in that I'm on vacation and not going in. Q: OK, good, because I'm on deadline, and I've got to file this today. A: What is it? Q: Secretary Mineta spoke to Alberta Lee, this is Wen Ho Lee's daughter -- A: Spoke to who? Q: -- Alberta Lee, the daughter of Wen Ho Lee. A: Wen Ho Lee, the guy from -- the prisoner? I mean, the -- Q: Ex-prisoner. A: -- ex-prisoner, yeah, yeah, yeah. Talked to her daughter? Q: Yeah, in a meeting in Atlanta, back in July. And I need to get some kind of explanation as to why he met with her. A: Uh ... what's the story about? Q: Exactly that -- that he met with Alberta -- that a Cabinet member of the Clinton administration met with Wen Ho Lee's daughter while he was being prosecuted by main Justice. Why should you? The last three gentlemen were the white victims of a black killer, Ronald Taylor, in Wilkinsburg, Penn., just a couple of weeks ago. The story made the front pages for about a day. And then just as suddenly it fell off the nation's radar screen. However, I will bet you can identify Matthew Shepard, or James Byrd, or Buford Furrow or, for that matter, Tawana Brawley. These were the victims, the perpetrator, and the phony victim of politically correct crimes in which all the actors assumed roles that confirmed the prejudices of our liberal elites. A Double Standard? Taylor, a resident of publicly subsidized housing, recently became incensed at maintenance workers trying to fix the door of his apartment. "You're all white trash, racist pigs," he exploded. "You're dead." He then went on a rampage that randomly killed Kroll, Healy, and Sanielevici, and critically wounded two others. When the FBI searched his apartment they found anti-Semitic, anti-Asian, anti-Italian, and anti-white hate literature. Taylor's crime did not confirm the nation's most protected racial prejudices, and that is why his criminal acts have been pushed so quickly out of sight. We get no Time and Newsweek cover stories about Taylor, no network features about black racism, no White House press conferences to berate the nation, no Capitol Hill resolutions authored by liberal Democratic Reps. Barney Frank (Ma.) and Maxine Waters (Ca.) to condemn the outrage, and no calls for hate-crime legislation to specifically include endangered white males. To these indicators, let me add a personal note. As author of a best-selling biography on the Kennedys, I am familiar enough to the media so that every time a Kennedy kills himself (or someone else), I get calls from a dozen shows at the networks, the cable channels, and even the BBC to come on as an expert commentator on the event. But even though I have a current book out called Hating Whitey, http://www.dhorowitz.com/ which is high up on the Amazon.com best-seller list, I have yet to receive a single interview request to talk about this hate-whitey crime. The White Devil Made Him Do It Even more striking, perhaps, than this media blackout are comments that have been volunteered by the few black spokespeople who have actually acknowledged the racial dimension of the crime. For example, the Rev. Thelma C. Mitchell, pastor at the Wilkinsburg Baptist Church, told her congregation in a "healing" service: "You cannot run from violence in the United States because the United States was founded on violence. Why are we suddenly shocked, brothers and sisters? The whole concept of racism and prejudice and targeting people, this is not a new game. Although I in no way agree with the methods he used, I suspect Mr. Taylor really did reflect a growing frustration in this community because too many African-American young men cannot find a meaningful job." In other words, the white devil made him do it. Far from being an extreme example, this kind of formulation functions as a mainstream excuse in the black community for the racial outrages committed by its members. Dr. Alvin Poussaint, a Harvard professor and one of the media's most quoted experts on the psychology of racism, is a case in point. Poussaint managed to identify Taylor's act as a case of "extreme racism." But in an interview with the Washington Times on March 3, Poussaint also speculated, in effect, that the white devil must have made Taylor do it. He said that the shooter may have gained a "generalized hatred toward all whites" from his personal experiences. The Times reported: "He [Poussaint] wondered whether the suspect was 'abused' by a white authority figure, such as a boss or a police officer. 'Or was he stopped for racial profiling,' he asked." In fact, according to Ronald Hampton, executive director of the National Black Police Association in Washington D.C., only the white devil can be racist. Questioned about the killings, Hampton told the Times, "It's impossible for blacks to practice racism on whites. Racism is the sum total of prejudice and power and blacks don't have power in our society." Tell that to Taylor's three dead victims. Theyve donated large sums of money to liberal, anti-gun Democrat organizations to support people like Dianne Feinstein, Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy. More recently, theyve canceled accounts for firearms related web sites on the grounds that such material is no different from pornography. Never mind that guns are entirely legal items owned by tens of millions of Americans. Never mind that AOL doesnt seem to think that disgustingly offensive rock music is a problem. Now, in another step towards the final elimination of gun owners from civilized society, AOL has fired three exemplary workers for having firearms in their cars in order to go shooting at a range on their own time! The three employees are Luke Hansen, Jason Melling and Paul Carlson. All three worked as partner technical consultants at AOLs Ogden, Utah facility, doing higher level technical support. The Ogden facility employs about 850 people, according to AOLs web site, and handles a range of technical, billing, third-party and sales calls. According to Mr. Hansen, they had worked at AOL for two to four years, and all had good employee records and good reviews from their supervisors. Unfortunately (at least from AOLs point of view), the three young men also enjoy shooting. On September 14, 2000, Luke, Jason and Paul met after work in the AOL parking lot to go shooting at the gun range near Eden, Utah. In order to carpool to the range, Jason and Paul transferred their firearms from their own cars to Lukes truck, a matter of carrying them a few yards. Jason transferred a .30-06 hunting rifle and a 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun. Both firearms were unloaded and in cases. Paul transferred a .45 long Colt cowboy style pistol and a 7.63 X .39 KBI. The Colt was in a holster, and both firearms were unloaded. The handguns had trigger locks in place. Lukes firearms were in his truck and he never touched Jason or Pauls firearms. At no time did they brandish or handle the firearms in a threatening or unsafe manner. Luke and Paul hold valid Utah concealed weapons permits, and Jason is in the process of obtaining one, so all three are familiar with safe handling and Utah laws. Although all three of them worked during the subsequent three days, nothing about the firearms was mentioned. However, on Monday, Sept. 18, all three were fired for violating AOLs employee policy which states that firearms are forbidden on company property, including the parking lot. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles police officer responding to a
noisy Halloween party at a mansion north of Beverly Hills shot and killed an
actor, who police said pointed what turned out to be a fake gun at him,
police said Sunday.
Anthony Dwain Lee, 39, who appeared in the 1997 movie "Liar, Liar" and
on several television shows including "NYPD Blue," was shot several times
early Saturday by Officer Tarriel Hopper who fired through a glass door
from an exterior hallway, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a
statement.
The shooting took place about 1 a.m. at a crowded party attended by
scores of costumed guests, many of them actors and other entertainment
industry professionals, at a mansion known as "the Castle" for its spires
and stained-glass windows, the Los Angeles Times reported.
It was not immediately known who owned the house or if the owner
attended the party.
"He was a Buddhist. He hated violence. It is amazing he died this way,"
Mitch Hale, a writer whose play "Buffalo Soldier" starred Lee and earned
him a local acting award, told the newspaper. "He was an incredibly gifted
actor and person. It's devastating ... Why did they shoot someone at a
Halloween party?"
Police said Hopper and Officer Natalie Humphreys were attempting to find
the owner of the home in the Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles after
neighbors complained about the party. The officers were at the rear of the
house when Hopper looked into a small room and spotted three people.
Police said that when Lee saw the officers he pulled what looked like a
handgun and pointed it at Hopper, who, in fear for his life, fired several
shots from his service pistol, wounding Lee, the LAPD statement said.
Lee was later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Officer Charlotte Broughton, a spokeswoman for the LAPD, said many of
the party-goers were in costume. One guest told the Times that some of
guests were dressed as cops, but it was not known if Lee was wearing a
costume. It was also not clear if Lee realized Hopper was a real officer with
a real gun.
The police department said Lee's supposed weapon was a fake, "a replica
semiautomatic pistol, dark in color."
The shooting is being investigated by the LAPD's Robbery-Homicide
Division and a team from the district attorney's office.
Another party-goer, Robert Hull, told the Times, "It was a shock that an
officer would shoot at such a party. This was an exclusive party with
security. Some of these people are making six figures, and this officer saw
a toy gun at a Halloween costume party and opened fire."
Another of the victim's friends, Mary Lin, told the newspaper, "His biggest
fear was getting killed by cops, because he's a tall black man."
Lee's friends said on Sunday they were planning to hold a candlelight vigil
in his honor Monday evening.

Bizzigotti Here's an interesting example of why some of us with technical backgrounds are skeptical of some of the eyewitness reports. Paul Adam has made this point before, but I would like to go into detail here so that hopefully everyone can appreciate the arguments. Ms. Perry was _at least_ 10 miles from TWA 800 when it exploded, but let's give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she was exactly 10 miles from TWA 800. Because she was on the ground, and TWA 800 was at 13,500 feet, she was at least 54,500 feet from TWA 800. A Boeing 747 is 232 feet long and 64 feet high, so the largest that it could have appeared in Ms. Perry's field of view was 14.6 arc-minutes high by 4.0 arc-minutes wide (if she was further away, the image would have been correspondingly smaller). Now let us digress into the world of bio optics. Our eyes work because photoreceptor cells on our retinas absorb light. we are only capable of telling whether or not a cell absorbs the light, so each cell corresponds to a pixel in an image. The maximum density of the photoreceptors in the human eye is 160,000 per square millimeter. This translates to a minimum distance between these receptor cells of 2.8 micrometers. One degree of visual angle is equal to 288 micrometers on the retina, so the minimum distance between receptor cells corresponds to 0.6 arc-minutes. Based on this, the image on Ms. Perry's retina likely covered something like 80 to 100 cells out of the 100 million receptor cells in her field of vision. In addition, the angular resolution of one's eyesight is limited by Rayleigh scattering of light. With a 2 mm pupil diameter and 500 nm light (near the center of the visible spectrum and the wavelength that maximally excites the receptor cells), the minimum angular separation required to resolve two points is 1.1 arc minutes. Thus, the physical properties of light dictate that even someone with absolutely perfect eyesight cannot distinguish between objects less than 17 feet apart at 54,500 feet. By either argument, being able to distinguish the fine detail implied in Ms. Perry's statement is unbelievable. Have someone slam a frozen six inch candy bar on a table 118 feet away from you, and see if you can "see the spaces in between the parts." How can one hundred pixels in a 10,000 x 10,000 image be anything more than an indistinct blur, with little recognizable detail? Note that there's nothing ideological in this argument; Bill Clinton has nothing to do with how retinas work or how light is scattered by an aperture. This is simply what a century of science has shown us about how our eyes and the universe work. As a result of this, we are left with only two possibilities: (1) Ms. Perry has eyes that are literally superhuman, or (2) Ms. Perry has embellished her story. Believing option (1) requires us that Rayleigh scattering of light be temporarily suspended for the first and only time in the history of scientific record keeping. Believing option (2) requires us to believe nothing more than that Ms. Perry is human. Thus, I would cast my vote for option (2), that Ms. Perry has embellished. That being the case, scientists and engineers tend to place somewhat less credence in her eyewitness account than in the physical data that is available. This is why we have stated that physical data trumps eyewitness accounts. IAN: Witnesses could see a 747 ten miles away. Dr Bizzigotti's math is correct, the length of a 747 ten miles away is 14.6 arc minutes, however, 14.6 arc minutes is equal to a quarter degree, which is equal to the width of a half moon. A half-moon's width is NOT smaller than the human eye can see, and anyone with good eyes can see details on it's surface, just as they could along a narrow band across the half-moon representing a jet's shape. "The moon is 31 minutes of arc in apparent size or half a degree." ARAB AND JEWISH REFUGEES - In 1948 the Arab refugees were encouraged to leave Israel by Arab leaders promising to purge the land of Jews. Sixty-eight percent left without ever seeing an Israeli soldier. - The Jewish refugees were forced to flee from Arab lands due to Arab brutality, persecution and pogroms. - The number of Arab refugees who left Israel in 1948 is estimated to be around 630,000. - The number of Jewish refugees from Arab lands is estimated to be the same. -Arab refugees were intentionally not absorbed or integrated into the Arab lands to which they fled, despite the vast Arab territory. Out of the 100,000,000 refugees since World War II, theirs is the only refugee group in the world that has never been absorbed or integrated into their own peoples' lands. - Jewish refugees were completely absorbed into Israel, a country no larger than the state of New Jersey. THE ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT - The Arabs are represented by eight separate nations, not including the Palestinians. For the most part, their territory prior to 1967 was in the area of JORDAN that is currently the west bank of Israel. - There is only one Jewish nation. - Israel has given the Palestinians most of the West Bank land, autonomy under the Palestinian Authority, and has supplied them with weapons. - The Arab nations initiated all five wars and lost. Israel defended itself each time and won and the P.L.O.'s Charter still calls for the destruction of the State of Israel. - Under Jordanian rule, Jewish holy sites were desecrated and the Jews were denied access to places of worship. - Under Israeli rule, all Muslim and Christian sites have been preserved and made accessible to people of all faiths. THE UN RECORD ON ISRAEL AND THE ARABS - Of the 175 Security Council resolutions passed before 1990, 97 were directed against Israel. - Of the 690 General Assembly resolutions voted on before 1990, 429 were directed against Israel. - The U.N was silent while 58 Jerusalem synagogues were destroyed by the Jordanians. - The U.N. was silent while the Jordanians systematically desecrated the ancient Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives. - The U.N. was silent while the Jordanians enforced an apartheid-like policy of preventing Jews from visiting the Temple Mount and the Western Wall. -Caveat Lector- October 30, 2000 - Texas Straight Talk - A Weekly Column U.S. Congress Bows to WTO Mandate Our National Sovereignty is Violated by Congressman Ron Paul An extraordinary event occurred this week in Washington during the final days of the 106th Congress, an event that did not receive comment in either the media or the halls of Congress, save for my office. This event had been termed "unthinkable" only a few months earlier. It occurred despite clear constitutional prohibitions and at the expense of our precious national sovereignty. For the first time in the history of our country, Congress voted to change our domestic laws because an international body told us to do so. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has begun to dictate American laws. More specifically, Congress voted to change our tax laws relating to Foreign Sales Corporations (FSCs), solely because the WTO appellate panel deemed that our FSC tax rules constituted a "subsidy" - the EU contingent in the WTO had brought a complaint to the panel. Our FSC rules simply allow U.S. corporations to exempt a small portion of income earned abroad from taxes. No "subsidy" is involved; no tax dollars are given to FSCs. Moreover, most EU countries do not tax their corporations on any income earned abroad. Still, the appellate panel agreed with the EU and gave the U.S an October 1st deadline to change our tax laws. I have opposed our membership in the WTO throughout my tenure in Congress. I strongly support true free trade, which occurs in the absence of government tariffs. The WTO, however, represents the worst form of government-managed trade. More importantly, however, our involvement in the WTO threatens national sovereignty. The Constitution clearly vests the power to regulate trade solely with Congress, and Congress cannot cede with mandates in areas such as environmental protections, worker rights, and trade policy. Congress either blindly or willfully chose to ignore this very serious constitutional conflict when it voted in favor of WTO membership. However, a Congressional Research Service report was quite clear about the consequences of our membership: "As a member of the WTO, the United States does commit to act in accordance with the rules of the multi-lateral body. It is legally obligated to insure that national laws do not conflict with WTO rules," (emphasis added). Earlier this year I sought to address this terrible threat to our sovereignty by introducing a resolution withdrawing us from the WTO. I explained my concerns in a brief to the House Ways and Means trade subcommittee, pointing out the unconstitutionality of our involvement. I warned that the WTO could begin dictating our environmental, labor and tax laws. These arguments were met with hostility and condescension. Subcommittee members stated that we needed the WTO to avoid "trade wars," and that the U.S. Congress would never change our domestic laws to satisfy the WTO. "Unthinkable" was how one member put it. Judging by this week's vote, the "unthinkable" has become reality. We should never change our national laws at the behest of any international organization. Congress simply has ceded its legislative authority to the WTO, and it is shameful that this action likely will go unnoticed by the American people. If we want to help American businesses, we should simply stop taxing their foreign income. The FSC measure will not appease the Europeans; the EU already has indicated that the changes are unsatisfactory to them. We stand on the brink of a retaliatory trade war with the EU, even though we were told that the WTO was needed to avoid such conflicts. So the WTO has given us the worst of all worlds. Rest assured that the WTO assault on American sovereignty will not end here. What will happen when the Europeans object to another area of our tax laws? Will we change the way we tax individuals also? Perhaps the Europeans will object to our relatively liberal immigration laws, because they resent losing their talented citizens to America. Whatever the issue, the threat remains the same. Americans who care about sovereignty have every reason to be outraged.
