[CTRL] Community morality

2003-01-07 Thread Zuukie
-Caveat Lector-

I reached my posting limit on Sunday, so I could not reply to you then.
Here is the response to your comments which appear after mine.

Let me say here when I talk of morality, I am not just talking about
sexual morality. I am talking about all interactions between
individuals, individuals as community members and those actions which
link an individual's life to a plan that seems to go beyond the world
immediately around us.

There is no contradiction in what I say. The history of the
determination of what is moral behavior toward others is demonstrated
very clearly in the Talmud for example where the leaders of the Jewish
community analyzed thru argument using precedent and review of accepted
religious writings the basics of what was moral behavior in given
situations. Community law had to conform to moral law. Moral law was
not determined by what community law was. Nor was it not left to what
each individual community member considered valid in their own thinking,
because individual belief is limited by one's own experience and one's
own exposure to information. In addition, human beings seem to very
successfully rationalize any kind of action they want in their life.
There would have been no necessity for religious law or civil law if
"Just be a good human being" was good enough law. Your do-it-yourself
moral code is very New Age and rests on the idea that every person is
part of God energy and is tapping into some sort of cosmic consciousness
to determine what is acceptable individual morality which needs no other
justification. Authorized community morality, or laws, then become
determined by those who are in power and have the strongest will as not
all individual moral positions can be accommodated where there is
community life.

You talk of your morality not as a response, but as of your own
determination. Idealistic. How will you resolve the differences
between your morality, the morality of others and the morality of those
in power when there is a conflict? How can you hold on to your moral
beliefs in the face of those in power whose moral beliefs are different
than yours and still survive as a member of a political community?

You say that individuals can think what they wish. Can they act on what
they believe or are they only allowed to think what they wish? Read
Gene Veith's book, Modern Fascism. Modern Fascism is not what you think
it is.

Do you not see your own contradiction here?

Here let me make it explicit:

> Morality is the basis of community.

And

> New Age morality is based on the idea of what is good for the
> community rather than on respect for the individual

My community is somewhat larger than yours I guess - it is not limited
by ethnicity or creed. It is not the community of secular Judaism, nor
the community of Judaism. It is the community of humanity.

My response to another is not based on a " need to know what they
believe in" - my response is based on what I believe in REGARDLESS of
their beliefs.

While I don't think it is particularly healthy for the species for
either fundamentalist Judaism or Christianity to continue, I will fight
to the death the right of individuals to HOLD those beliefs. Your mind
is your own.

As I understand what it means to be a good Jew is to repair the
shattered unity of the universe, or in less esoteric terms, to behave in
a manner that increases the overall good and weal of the universe and
the individuals in it.

Behavior not belief defines a good Jew. It also defines a good human
being.

As to depending on the morality of others - well that will always fall
short on depending on the morality of one's self.

The key question is how to balance the need for the good of the
community against the need to enhance the freedom of the individual. It
is a difficult line to walk, especially because it is shifting
constantly. Not only constantly, but at an ever increasing rate. That is
why we cannot rely solely on some 5000 year old book and 1 year old
metaphors to define what is or is not moral.

Filmmaker Hopsicker Discusses
Odd Activities Of 911 'Ringleader'
Suppressed By American Media
1-7-3

Radio Transcript Published In The American Free Press

By Tom Valentine with Daniel Hopsicker and Michael C. Piper
American Free Press
January 6 & 13, 2003

Investigative journalist Daniel Hopsicker, producer of the new
video, "Mohamed Atta and the Venice Flying Circus," was a guest on
the Dec. 15 broadcast of Radio Free America, the weekly call-in talk
forum sponsored by American Free Press with host Tom Valentine.

Joining Valentine as co-host for the evening was AFP Correspondent
Michael Collins Piper. The two discussed Hopsicker's shocking
discoveries - outlined in his video - that prove, beyond any
question, that the U.S. government has been officially covering up
explosive facts about the activities and associations of reputed 9-11
hijacking ringleader Mohamed Atta.

Excerpts:

Valentine:

For all intents and purposes, as your research into Barry Seal has
shown - along with the work of many others who have dared to look
into the subject matter - the world's largest cargo airline has been
run by the CIA. Intelligence officials have a definite link to this
little Venice airport, don't they? Some people would argue that it
was "just a coincidence" that Atta and the 9-11 boys would come there
to learn to fly.

Hopsicker:

It's beyond coincidence at this point. In fact, you'll even find that
the owner of the flight school in Venice, Wallace J. Hilliard, was in
business with a key figure in the Whitewater scandal, Truman Arnold,
a Bill Clinton crony from Arkansas who had been the finance chairman
of the Democratic Party.
Arnold's attorney in Whitewater was longtime Washington figure
Richard Ben-Veniste, who was just named to sit on the 9-11
investigation panel.

So, Ben-Veniste has ties to people he is supposed to be
investigating. So when you are talking, in this case, about the owner
of the "terror flight school" you are talking about a person that
anyone might naturally consider a possible suspect.

Hilliard, a 70-year-old multimillionaire health insurance executive
and a self-styled Mormon bishop, inexplicably went into business
three years ago with a Dutch native living in America, Rudy Dekkers,
and began buying flight schools which shortly thereafter were flooded
with Arab student pilots.

Initially, I thought that Dekkers owned the flight school. But
Hilliard was always the true owner of the flight school where Atta
and one of the other 9-11 hijackers trained.

There was another hijacker who trained next door at the Florida
Flight Training Center which - coincidentally, you might say - is
also owned by a Dutch native.

It appears that Zaccarias Moussaoui who is scheduled to go on trial
for conspiracy in the 9-11 attacks was also here.

Valentine:

The federal authorities came in and grabbed up all of the records of
the flight school.

Hopsicker:

That's right. They flew them out on a plane that also had Jeb Bush
aboard.

Valentine:

The federal authorities told the local law enforcement authorities to
keep their noses out of the investigation, didn't they?

Hopsicker:

That's correct. I sat down with two Southern lawmen, a current
sheriff and his immediate predecessor. These two guys looked me dead
in the eye and said that, based on what they have seen with a lot of
CIA-connected covert operations in the area, the CIA was somehow
involved in, if not responsible for, the World Trade Center attacks.
You might expect some wild-eyed leftist radical to say that. But
these are two Southern sheriffs. They have spent years watching CIA
activities that they could not interfere with.

[CTRL] George W. FDR - The 9/11 Cover Up

http://www.etherzone.com/2003/sans010703.shtml

GEORGE W. FDR:
THE 9-11 COVER UP

By: Joe Sansone

On December 7th 1941 Pearl Harbor was bombed by a Japanese sneak attack, condemning thousands of souls to the bottom of the sea, and sealing the fate of a nation. The United States would enter the Second World War.

Now imagine if the United States government withheld who was behind the Pearl Harbor bombings and deemed such information classified for national security reasons. Farfetched? That is precisely what happened on September 11th 2001.

A PBS Transcript of an interview with Senator Graham of the Select Committee On Intelligence revealed the most shocking news story since the terrorist bombings took place. When discussing classified evidence that he felt Americans should know about, Graham said, “I was surprised at the evidence that there were foreign governments involved in facilitating the activities of at least some of the terrorists in the United States.”

Understand clearly the impact of this statement. The Senator is saying that a foreign government or governments committed an act of war against the United States, but the government of the United States is hiding that information from its citizens in the name of national security.

How exactly can Americans through their congress decide on the best course of action if information about those responsible is being denied? Instead of this abstract war on terrorism to rid the planet of evil wherever it may surface, that of course will last forever, and is increasingly moving us towards a totalitarian state, Americans could intelligently decide whether to wage war against the nation or nations responsible.

The 9-11 cover-up is not only denying Americans their right to decide the best course of action, it is also endangering the lives of Americans to possible future attacks. Senator Graham, when speaking of classified evidence and the dereliction of the U.S. government to pursue it, said, “I am stunned that we have not done a better job of pursuing that to determine if other terrorists received similar support and, even more important, if the infrastructure of a foreign government assisting terrorists still exists for the current generation of terrorists who are here planning the next plots.”

So because the United States government is not pursuing the nation or nations that assisted the terrorists, the possibility exists that the nation behind it is still operating on American soil. The public is being held completely in the dark on the issue.

The possibilities of who assisted the terrorists are nearly limitless. It could be supposed allies that are receiving foreign aid from America like Saudi Arabia or Israel. It could be potential adversaries like China or Russia. Equally as important a question as who was behind the attacks is why hide it from the American public?

Regardless of any supposed reason for the cover-up, it is wrong and has nothing to do with national security. Americans have a right to know what nation or nations committed an act of war against them. Cover-ups typically imply that there is something to hide.

The president has been given powers that no American president has ever had before. Congress has ceded its constitutional duty to declare war to Bush. Even General Washington in the American Revolution had to answer to congress.

Why is it that the United States Congress, the instrument of the political will of the American people, cedes its most important power to the president?

At the same time that it does so the American people are being denied the right to know whom it was that assisted in the 9-11 attacks.

The essence of Bush’s war on terrorism is to protect the U.S. government from American citizens by stripping them of civilian rights as guaranteed by the Bill Of Rights, while at the same time leaving Americans defenseless to foreign terrorists.

While the U.S. marches towards war in Iraq, the borders of the United States are left undefended. In the name of security American citizens are being forced to undergo humiliating strip searches at airports while foreign terrorists may as well be allowed to come and go as they please.

The Bush administration takes national security so seriously that an Illegal Alien worked at the White House. And we are told that we must sacrifice some of our freedom for security.

Oh, and in 30 years or so the information about who it was that was behind the attacks on September 11th 2001 might become public.

800 American professors warn against coming Israeli ethnic cleansing campaign
Date: Tuesday, December 24, 2002 @ 01:08:28 EST
Topic: News from the Front

By Nigel Parry,
Electronic Intifada

Earlier this year, 187 Israeli professors signed an "Urgent Warning" letter titled "The Israeli government may be contemplating crimes against humanity." As of today, 800 American professors have signed a similar document, warning of coming Israeli ethnic cleansing.

Released on September 29, 2002, the original Israeli letter began by stating, "We, members and friends of Israeli academe, are horrified by US buildup of aggression towards Iraq and by the Israeli political leadership's enthusiastic support for it. We are deeply worried by indications that the 'fog of war' could be exploited by the Israeli government to commit further crimes against the Palestinian people, up to full-fledged ethnic cleansing."

The letter continued on to note that the coalition ruling Israel included parties that promote ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian population as a "solution" to the conflict, the letter cited several examples of senior Israeli government and military officials using the language of ethnic cleansing, and called on the international community to "pay close attention to events that unfold within Israel and in the Occupied Territories."

The American letter, released on December 18, 2002, opens with expressions of full support for the Israeli letter. Signed by 800 professors and intellectuals to date, the U.S. letter concludes: We join with our Israeli colleagues in calling for vigilance as events unfold in Israel and the Occupied Territories. With an average of more than $10 million dollars per day of American tax dollars going to Israel, we believe Americans cannot remain silent while crimes as abhorrent as ethnic cleansing are being openly advocated.

We urge our government to communicate clearly to the government of Israel that the expulsion of people according to race, religion or nationality would constitute crimes against humanity and will not be tolerated. More information about the U.S. letter, including instructions on how to sign it, can be found at www.professorsofconscience.org.

This initiative by American academics represents a highly significant mainstream articulation of Palestinian concerns about where the international community's tacit acceptance of Israel's now regular excessive use of force will ultimately lead.

The letter is expected to draw much criticism and praise in the hotly-contested arena of Middle East education. Earlier this year, a few days before the Israeli academics' letter was released, EI reported on the launch of the Campus Watch website, an initiative by Daniel Pipes to encourage McCarthyite monitoring of faculty opinion and lesson plans in U.S. higher education institutions.

Such initiatives would seem to have failed. It appears from today's letter and several other recent moves to encourage universities to remove Israeli stocks from their investment portfolios, that U.S. faculty are increasingly feeling the need to express an opinion on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and their message is not one that Mr. Pipes or his ilk wish to hear.

You’re Invited to the War Party
By Georgie Anne Geyer

Ever since his Watergate revelations, which helped evict a president and change the United States for all time, for better or worse Bob Woodward has stood as the major force in a new genre of journalism. He talks, wheedles, and, using government officials’ personal ambitions and dreams of political eternity, implicitly threatens his way into the often closed corridors of power—there, he is a master at getting a certain number of figures who try their best to remain aloof and unknown to tell their stories. The proposition, understood if not explicitly spoken, is that this book, as his former ones, will tell the story—you miss out on leave on this journalistic port, fellow, you miss the whole historic ship!

But once again with Bush at War, one has to wonder first what really is this genre? As with his other books, such as The Agenda: Inside the Clinton White House, the style is curt and commanding. It is easy and fully intended for the reader to get the impression that this is exactly the way it all really happened, particularly since by far the largest part of the book is direct quote after direct quote, many of them quite complex and all totally impossible to check. There is also little contextual matter or balance and certainly no “other-think” even minimally allowed on the pages.

So, first, we need to keep in mind that the Woodward genre, or style, or indeed whatever we want to call it, is one that we might best and most legitimately call a kind of “journalistic political theater.” And the important thing in theater is always, first, to know it is theater and thus not exactly life; but the next important thing is to realize that the discerning theater-goer, the person who has other facts and sufficient faculties of discernment at his fingertips, can gain enormous amounts of knowledge and reflection from a careful attendance to the stage and particularly from a skeptical perusal of the movements behind the curtains.

So, do not look in this book for “the whole story,” but do look for incredible insights. Woodward walks us into the closed salons of this secretive administration, and that is a valuable escort service indeed.

First of all, Bush at War is really about the decision-making process in the upper levels of the Bush administration—the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon—from the exact morning of Sept. 11th. It begins with a profoundly worried George Tenet, head of the CIA and, from all of the space he gets in the book, obviously one of Woodward’s best and favored sources. That very morning, Tenet is wondering about when Osama bin Laden, whom he has been desperately tracking, will strike the U.S. Then “it” happens—and from then onward, the book delineates day-by-day, and sometimes hour-by-hour and minute-by-minute—what supposedly went on in meeting after meeting. From all accounts that I know of, Woodward’s interpretations are exactly right; it is the quotes that are so bothersome.

But since so much of the material on the Afghan war has been covered before, the clues as to a future attack on Iraq are the parts that are the most original and that I will therefore deal with here.

The “question of Iraq,” for instance, was raised at a White House meeting of principals the very next day after the terrorist attacks. It was raised by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld but was actually reflecting the long-time obsession of Paul Wolfowitz, his aggressive deputy. In fact, Wolfowitz did not hesitate even to step in ahead of his demanding boss that day in regaling the president on Iraq. “Wolfowitz seized the opportunity,” Woodward writes. “Attacking Afghanistan would be uncertain. He worried about 100,000 American troops bogged down in mountain fighting in Afghanistan six months from then. In contrast, Iraq was a brittle, oppressive regime that might break easily. It was doable. He estimated that there was a 10 to 50 percent chance Saddam was involved in the September 11 terrorist attacks.”

Here you come upon some of the many revealing counterpoints in the score. Some, like Wolfowitz and the group of neoconservative zealots, with their intimate ties to the hardest parts of the Israeli Right, wanted to attack and ultimately “reconfigure” the entire Middle East for their own and Israel’s interests, and soon they were moving Heaven and Earth to convince the president that Iraq constituted, not a mere 10 to 50 percent of the problem, but 100 percent of it. Some of the president’s advisors also genuinely feared Saddam’s possible use of weapons of mass destruction. But there is also a persistent undercurrent of macho thinking that, hey, we’ve got the weapons: “Should they think about launching military action elsewhere as an insurance policy in case things in Afghanistan went bad?” Woodward paraphrases these moment

Firm says stolen software helped bin Laden plot 9/11
By Jerry Seper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

The head of a computer firm wants the independent commission named to investigate September 11 intelligence failures to review accusations that his software-tracking program, which he says the Justice Department stole, was diverted to Osama bin Laden. Top

William H. Hamilton, president of Inslaw Inc., said the commission — headed by former New Jersey Gov. David H. Kean — should focus on the validity of published reports saying bin Laden penetrated classified computer files before the attacks to evade detection and monitor the activities of U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

The 10-member Commission on Terrorist Attacks will have the authority to subpoena witnesses and documents in an effort to determine whether intelligence lapses by the FBI, CIA and other agencies contributed to the deadly success of the September 11 attacks.

"Bin Laden reportedly bought the U.S. intelligence community's version of the Promis database software on the Russian black market, after former FBI Agent Robert P. Hanssen had stolen it for the Russians, and used Promis in computer-based espionage against the United States," Mr. Hamilton said in a two-page fact sheet.

"The national commission may wish to examine whether the Justice Department's misappropriation of Promis was, at a minimum, linked indirectly to pre-September 11 performance problems of U.S. intelligence," he said.

Law enforcement authorities said Hanssen gave secret U.S. software to his Russian handlers that later went to bin Laden, allowing him to monitor U.S. investigations of his al Qaeda terrorist network.

The Washington Times reported last year that an upgraded version of the Promis software was routed to bin Laden after Hanssen, who is now serving life in prison for his espionage activities, had sold it to Russia for $2 million.

The software not only would have given bin Laden the ability to monitor U.S. efforts to track him down, the authorities said, but also could have given him access to databases on specific targets of his choosing and the ability to monitor electronic-banking transactions, easing money-laundering operations for himself or others.

The government has denied using the Promis software or that Hanssen delivered it to the Russians, but charged in a criminal complaint against the former FBI agent that he made extensive use of the bureau's computerized case management systems — Field Office Information Management Systems (FOIMS) and Community On-Line Intelligence Systems (COINS) — as part of his activities.

The government also said Hanssen gave his handlers a technical manual on the U.S. intelligence community's secure network for online access to intelligence databases. Law enforcement authorities said FOIMS and COINS are believed to be upgraded versions of the Promis software.

Mr. Hamilton said FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III acknowledged to Inslaw attorney C. Boyden Gray in late 2001 that the FBI system was based on "the Inslaw software," a fact the bureau had vigorously denied for more than a decade. He said Mr. Mueller referred further inquiries to the Justice Department, although a requested meeting never was scheduled.

"The national commission will need to overcome resistance from the Justice Department, remarkable for both its ferocity and tenacity, to any inquiry that might even imply the existence of the department's improprieties regarding Promis," Mr. Hamilton said.

He said federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies, including the FBI, later denied under oath that they had used the program, but the government did "an abrupt about face" a month after the September 11 attacks following news reports that bin Laden might have used the Promis program.

Mr. Hamilton said the FBI confirmed on Oct. 16, 2001, that the government had used Promis to track classified information in federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Inslaw battled the Justice Department for more than a decade over a $10 million, three-year contract to install the Promis program. A federal court initially ruled the department had used "trickery, fraud and deceit" to steal the Promis program, but that ruling later was overturned in the government's favor.

The House Judiciary Committee, after a three-year investigation, also found in 1992 that there was "strong evidence" the Justice Department had conspired to steal the Promis program.

1) The broadcast networks on Monday night, especially CBS, pushed
the liberal spin that the Bush tax cut proposals will unfairly
benefit the rich. Assuming all money belongs to the government,
CBS's John Roberts insisted "the President's plan would give the
most to the rich." CBS's Byron Pitts highlighted how "a middle
class wife" saw Bush's plan as "little more than a feel-good gift
that won't give much to most Americans -- especially the middle
class." ABC's Peter Jennings conveyed how Democrats "say that it
grossly favors the wealthy."

2) ABC decided on Monday morning to showcase a family which
welcomes the Bush tax cut plan, but which worries about how "it'll
cost in the long run," and how other "critics of the President's
plan say it favors the rich." On Good Morning America, Mellody
Hobson even found opposition from a millionaire: "A person with a
million-dollar income will get an estimated $24,000 in savings.
Even wealthy investors like Bill Bartholomay, chairman of the
Atlanta Braves, are uneasy."

3) Another left-wing harangue from Hearst Newspapers columnist
Helen Thomas at the White House press briefing. On Monday, Thomas
demanded to know why Bush wants "to drop bombs on innocent
Iraqis?" She whined about how the Iraqis are "not attacking" the
U.S. and wondered if this is "your revenge? Eleven years of
revenge?" She also sputtered about how "many countries don't have,
people don't have the decision" on U.S. policy, adding in disgust:
"Including us."

4) A Saudi terrorist wanted to donate to the Bush presidential
campaign, NBC News correspondent Lisa Myers reported Monday night
but, in a change from the Clinton era, Myers learned that "a
Republican fundraiser said no because it's illegal to take
contributions from foreigners."

5) Update: The author on whose book CBS based its movie about
Enron revealed that the movie's producers removed references to
the Clinton administration. Brian Cruver told the Houston
Chronicle: "In the book, as far as connections to the Bush
administration, to me it was a bipartisan corruption, and I have
as much information in the book about connections to (Bill)
Clinton as (George W.) Bush. But the movie has taken a more
one-sided view of that." Indeed it did.

Sentiments"; "Daschle Is Really a Centrist?"; "Awed by the
Greatness of Jimmy"; "Those Costly, Foolish Tax Cuts"; "Mocking

> 1) The broadcast networks on Monday night, especially CBS,
advanced the liberal spin that the Bush tax cut proposals, to
accelerate the income tax rate reductions and eliminate the tax on
dividends, will unfairly benefit the rich. No story bothered to

Mohamed Atta sent polemical emails, including one containing a gruesome photo of a dead Palestinian child, to a regular email list of some 40 individuals, all of whom became the focus of intense scrutiny from the FBI after the lists existence became known last September, the MadCowMorningNews has learned. Alarmingly, the email addresses of several of the names on Attas terrorist e-list appear to have been, or still are, employees of US defense contractors. One name on Atta's email list, for example, apparently worked at a Canadian company called Virtual Prototypes, whose website touts the fact that the firm helped prototype the avionics instruments in the F-15 jet fighter, the F-22 Raptor, the B2 bomber and the Apache Longbow, among others.

During the Fall of 2001, we witnessed anthrax attacks on the United States government that were obviously designed to shut down the government at a very critical time immediately after September 11. It was during this time that Congress should have been in session, making decisions regarding oversight of the Executive Branch of government. This note will discuss some historical background for the law, policy and science of biological weapons here in the United States. Why are we supposed to forget about the Anthrax attacks?
What do we really know about the anthrax attacks of October 2001, beside the apparent precedence for framing Arabs for terrorist attacks involving weapons of mass destruction? When looking for a source

New plane may plug hole in the ozone layer By Paul Marston, Transport Correspondent(Filed: 08/03/2002)
A NEW breed of airliners could help reduce the hole in the Earth's ozone layer.

Boeing's Sonic Cruiser
Boeing is designing the Sonic Cruiser to operate at 42,000-50,000ft, within the lower levels of the ozonosphere. It will be fitted with sensors to monitor the ozone layer and could eventually be used to release replacement ozone.
Boeing hopes it will be flying within six years at just under the speed of sound, saving an hour per 3,000 miles flown on current airliners.
Environmentalists are sceptical about Boeing's plans.
Friends of the Earth said: "Trying to tinker with this huge problem by adding yet more chemicals into the Earth's environment could make matters worse."

Searle, accidentally discovers aspartame, a substancethat is 180 times sweeter than sugar yet has no calories.Spring 1967-- Searle begins the safety tests on aspartame that arenecessary for applying for FDA approval of food additives. Fall 1967-- Dr. Harold Waisman, a biochemist at the University ofWisconsin, conducts aspartame safety tests on infant monkeys on behalfof the Searle Company. Of the seven monkeys that were being fedaspartame mixed with milk, one dies and five others have grand malseizures. November 1970-- Cyclamate, the reigning low-calorie artificial sweetener-- is pulled off the market after some scientists associate it withcancer. Questions are also raised about safety of saccharin, the onlyother artificial sweetener on the market, leaving the field wide openfor aspartame. December 18, 1970-- Searle Company executives lay out a "Food and DrugSweetener Strategy' that they feel will put the FDA into a positiveframe of mind about aspartame. An internal policy memo describespsychological tactics the company should use to bring the FDA into asubconscious spirit of participation" with them on aspartame and get FDAregulators into the "habit of saying, "Yes"." Spring 1971-- Neuroscientist Dr. John Olney (whose pioneering work withmonosodium glutamate was responsible for having it removed from babyfoods) informs Searle that his studies show that aspartic acid (one ofthe ingredients of aspartame) caused holes in the brains of infantmice. One of Searle's own researchers confirmed Dr. Olney's findings ina similar study. February 1973-- After spending tens of millions of dollars conductingsafety tests, the G.D. The Drug War According to Dr. MengeleAgent Green Over the Andesby Jeffrey St. ClairDissident VoiceDecember 27, 2002Hostile intentions toward the people of another country. Deployment ofchemical weapons and biological agents. Pursuit of a scorched earth policy.Sound like Saddam's Iraq? Think again. This neatly capsulizes the Bushadministration's ongoing depredations in Colombia, all under the shadybanner of the war on drugs. The big difference is that Saddam's hideous use of poison gas against theKurds and, most likely, against Iran occurred more than 15 years ago. Sincethe Gulf War, Saddam's mad pursuits have been more on the order of chemistryexperiments in bombed out basements. But the Bush administration's toxic waron Colombian peasants is happening now, day after day, in flippant violationof international law.Indeed, as Bush offers pious homilies on Iraq's possible hoarding ofso-called Weapons of Mass Destruction, his administration and its backersfrom both parties in congress are poised to unleash a new wave toxins in themountains of Colombia, including a dangerous brew of biological weapons itsproponents rather quaintly call mycoherbicides. Let us call it: Agent Green. The leading germ war hawk in the congress these days is Rep. Bob Mica, aRepublican from Florida. In mid-December, Mica called on his pals in theBush administration to uncork a currently banned batch of killer fungi andbegin a campaign of saturation spraying. "We have to restore ourmycoherbicide," Mica fumed. "Things that have been studied for too long needto be put into action. We found that we can not only spray this stuff, butwe found that we can also deactivate it for some period of time-it will do alot of damage-it will eradicate some of these crops for a substantial periodof time."Of course, Agent Green also kills everything else it touches. There's noteven a pretense to call these germ bomblets "smart fungi." This is the drugwar as it might be waged by Dr. Mengele. Mica's bracing call for anunfettered germ war on Colombia should jotted down by junior legal eagleswith dreams of becoming future prosecutors of war crimes. But Mica is far from a lone crazed voice. Even the perpetually conflictedColin Powell is on record supporting the use of biological agents as a keypart of Plan Colombia. Indeed, Anne Peterson, the US ambassador to Bogota, testified recently that she believed bio-weapons had already been deployedin Colombia. Bizarrely, she later retracted this chilling observation, saying that it had been made under duress. Ms. Peterson didn't say who hadapplied the thumbscrews. Then there's Rand Beers, one of the few holdovers at the State Departmentfrom Clinton time. It's easy to see why this biowar zealot appealed to theBush crowd. Back in the late 90s, Beers was all for using germ weapons oncrops in drug-producing countries. Now, as Assistant Secretary of State fornarcotics, Beers trots across the globe to various international conferenceswhere he invariably is forced to defend this toxic footnote to Plan Colombiaagainst critics who charge that it violates, among other treaties, theBiological Weapons Convention. Beers often says that the toxic weapons areneeded to fight international crime syndicates. This heady bit of sophistryis hardly an exemption from the prohibitions, which, it must be pointed out,the Bush administration doesn't believe in anyway, even though they aretrigger-happy to invoke its provisions against enemy states, such as Iraq. So, as in Macbeth, sin plucks on sin.Agent Green is a genetically engineered pathogenic fungi, conjured up by theUS Department of Agriculture's experiment station in Beltsville, Maryland. It is now being produced with US funds by Ag/Bio Company, a private lab inBozeman, Montana and at a former Soviet bioweapons factory in Tashkent,Uzbekistan. The labs are brewing up two types of killer fungi, Fusariumoxysporum (slated for use against marijuana and coca plants) and Pleospora papveracea (engineered to destroy opium poppies). The problem is that both fungi are indiscriminate killers, posing threats tohuman health and to non-target species. Add to this the fact that whensprayed from airplanes and helicopters, Agent Green will be carried by windsand inevitably drift over coffee plantations, fields, farms, villages, andwater supplies.Agent Green also threatens the ecology of the Colombian rainforest, one ofthe most biologically diverse on the planet. These forests harbor a greatervariety of species per acre than any country's. But the Colombian forestsare already under frightful siege from gold mining, oil companies, loggingoutfits and cattle ranching. By one count, Colombia has already lost morethan a third of its primary forest and continues to lose forest at a rate of3000 square miles (or nearly 2 million acres) a year. It's possible that theAgent Green operation may saturate more than a million acres of Colombianrainforest, with potentially devastating ecological consequences for

Bill Clinton heads Oxford's wishlist for new Chancellor
By Tony Halpin, Education Editor

BILL CLINTON, who has made no secret of his love for Oxford
and whose daughter is a student there, may be asked to stand for Chancellor of the
university to succeed Lord Jenkins of Hillhead.

The prospect of a Clinton candidacy was greeted enthusiastically yesterday by Professor
Alan Ryan, Warden of New College, who is on a sabbatical year at Stanford University in
California.

He said: “I would love to see Bill Clinton nominated. It would be tremendously good
fun and
extremely useful if Oxford was going into the fundraising business in a serious
fashion. I am
sure somebody will put him up.”

The death of Lord Jenkins on Sunday leaves vacant the chancellorship for only the
fourth
time in 70 years. Sixty-thousand Oxford graduates will vote for his successor. With
just 50
graduate supporters required for any nomination, the way is open for Britain’s most
intriguing intellectual election campaign this year. The ballot is expected to be held
in March.

The chancellorship is a lifetime position, elected by members of Convocation. For the
first
time, the electorate will all be graduates of the university and not just those whose
degrees
have been converted into an MA after seven years.

The only catch is they have to vote in person at the university. A record 8,300 turned
out in
March 1987, when Lord Jenkins gained 3,249 votes to beat Sir Edward Heath and Lord
Blake to the post.

The post of titular head of Britain’s oldest university has usually gone in recent
times to a
heavyweight public figure with strong political connections. In the present financially
conscious era, an ability to pull in big donors is an added attraction.

It traditionally offers elder statesmen — there has not yet been a woman — the
opportunity
of a prominent position of influence from which to pronounce on anything they like.

Debate about possible contenders will be intense in common rooms across the city,
although names are unlikely to emerge until at least the start of the new term on
January 19.
Conceivably, Tony Blair could stand, as Harold Macmillan did when he was Prime
Minister in
1960. The required 50 backers could be gathered from within the corridors of 10 Downing
Street, but a candidacy is thought unlikely.

Mr Clinton is a more realistic prospect, however. If he indicates that he would like
the post he
would be a hot favourite among younger graduates and dons dazzled by his star appeal.
The former US President, 56, has said that he spent two of the happiest years of his
life
while a Rhodes scholar at University College.

Lord Jenkins even joked with Mr Clinton during the latter’s visit to the university in
May 2001
that he was welcome in any capacity provided he did not have premature ambitions
towards
the chancellorship.

An Oxford University spokesman said that there were no restrictions against a Clinton
candidacy. But he added: “The only thing that might be a barrier would be the need to
be in
the country for significant amounts of time. That might interfere with his lecture
tours.”

Discussion at Balliol College could centre on support for the candidacy of Chris
Patten, a
Balliol man and the European Union’s External Affairs Commissioner.

Balliol could be hoping for an academic hat-trick as the alma mater of the two previous
Chancellors, Lord Jenkins and Macmillan. Mr Patten, 59 this year, is widely viewed as
Mr
Blair’s favourite Tory and has both the political connections and international
profile that
Oxford will be seeking.

He may also have had enough of life in the Brussels bureaucracy. He once calculated
during
a particularly dreary Euro meeting that he had another 175,200 hours to live if he
survived
20 more years, and intended to put them to better use.

Baroness Williams of Crosby, 72, could be a strong contender as Oxford’s first woman
Chancellor. The former Labour Education Secretary and Lord Jenkins’s fellow “gang of
four”
founder of the SDP, is a graduate of Somerville. She has an impressive academic
pedigree
to match her political career, most recently as Professor of Elective Politics at
Harvard
University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Supporters of Lord Heseltine, a former President of the Oxford Union, may seek to
secure
his consent to a nomination. But the former Deputy Prime Minister, who has not
concealed
his despair at the present state of the Conservative Party, may prefer to retain the
freedom to
campaign for British entry to the euro should Mr Blair call a referendum later this
year.

An outside contender could be Lord Birt of Liverpool, the former BBC Director-General
John
Birt, given Oxford’s extensive diaspora of media graduates.

But Mr Blair’s personal “strategy adviser” may feel that he has all the influence he
needs
without submi

[CTRL] Influenza Toll Rising

Flu deaths up sharply despite vaccine

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Despite the advent of a vaccine four decades ago, flu-related deaths in the
United States have risen dramatically since the 1970s, and influenza now claims more
lives
each year than AIDS, researchers say.

The rising death toll is attributed largely to the nation's growing number of elderly
people,
who are especially vulnerable to the flu.

Only about 65 percent of older people get vaccinated, and the annual shots do not
protect
aging immune systems as well as they do younger ones.

The U.S. death toll surged fourfold from 16,263 in 1976-77 to 64,684 in 1998-99, the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Flu deaths now average about
36,000
a year, up from 20,000 in previous estimates, the CDC said.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said the news "that influenza may
be taking an even larger toll than we have realized" underscores the importance of flu
shots,
especially for older people.

The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

While drug breakthroughs in the mid-1990s helped tame AIDS and reduce the U.S. death
toll from 51,000 in 1995 to about 15,000 in 2001, the main weapon doctors have against
flu
-- vaccines -- have proven disappointingly ineffective in the most vulnerable
population,
people 65 and older.

The death toll pales in comparison to that of the worldwide flu epidemic of 1918,
which killed
more than 20 million people, including 500,000 Americans.

But the new numbers frustrate public health experts who had hoped the development of
flu
vaccine about 40 years ago would have had a greater effect. Annual flu shots have been
recommended for people 65 and older since the 1960s and for those 50 and older since
2000.

Vaccination rates are also dismal -- about 30 percent -- for another target group,
people with
high- risk conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, said Dr. Keiji Fukuda, a CDC
epidemiologist.

Thompson noted that flu shots are free under Medicare and said new federal rules should
help increase vaccination rates by allowing hospitalized Medicare patients to get flu
shots
without a doctor's order.

For the study, researchers developed a new statistical model to create a more accurate
estimate of flu deaths using national mortality and virus surveillance data.

The new model shows that a more lethal virus strain has hit in recent years,
contributing to
the increase in deaths.

But between 1976 and 1999, the number of U.S. adults 85 and older doubled. And the
researchers found that this age group was 16 times more likely to die of flu-related
causes
than people ages 65 to 69.

Flu can progress to pneumonia and other life-threatening lung infections and can weaken
elderly people, making them more vulnerable to other serious ailments, such as heart
disease.

The study also found that older people are disproportionately affected by another
respiratory
virus previously thought to be more common in children.

The researchers estimate there are 11,000 deaths annually from respiratory syncytial
virus,
which can cause severe cold-like symptoms and pneumonia.

Their study confirmd that RSV is the most common cause of viral death in children
under 5.
But to researchers' surprise, the study found that 78 percent of RSV deaths occur in
people
65 and older.

"We've known for some time that influenza and RSV have a profound impact on public
health," said CDC director Dr. Julie Gerberding. "However, these data indicate that the
magnitude of the problem is larger than we once thought."

Vaccines against RSV are being developed.

Col. Hackworth: Troops Unprepared for Iraq's Chemical 'Death Pit'

Col. David H. Hackworth warns that the Pentagon is willing to send in
American troops unprepared for Iraq's "death pit of spent radiation and
bio-chem weaponry," a "poisonous caldron of Desert Storm II, where
casualties could be as catastrophic as the last time our soldiers stood
tall in that unforgiving desert and suffered at least 160,000 disabled
and dying WIA (Wounded in Action) and 10,000 KIABGN (Killed in Action
by Government Neglect)."

A recent report by the U.S. General Accounting Office noted that
"serious problems still persist" regarding the protective masks, suits
and detection gear. An Army report in December stated that more than
half of its protective masks and nearly all of its chemical-weapons
alarms were either "completely broken or not fully operational."

A Pentagon spokeswoman insists "the Pentagon has substantially improved
individual protective garments, gas masks and chemical detectors since
the Gulf War."

Hackworth counters, "But a line sergeant I'd trust with my life says,
'The only improvement I've seen since the Gulf War is now that we have
the M-40 Protective Mask instead of the M-17A1, we can change our
filters without committing suicide.'

"Why won't the media or Congress touch this story when we could be only
weeks away from destroying the lives of another generation of American
heroes? Is it the prevailing attitude that war is a nasty business, but
our all-volunteer force signed up for it? Or is it just that no one who
could make a difference cares about blue-collar bio-chem fodder mainly
from metropolitan slums or small-town America?"

I agree that Bush has a heinously evil, criminal mind. Scott Ritter was on
CNN again last night, referring to photographs which Rumsfeld had held up
to "prove" the location of installations for weapons of mass destruction.
Ritter said the UN inspectors had checked them and found nothing. The Bush
rhetoric has persisted in TERRORIZING the world by threatening what is
essentially World War III or "Armageddon" as General Scowcroft has called
it. He has persisted in looking for any excuse to war and his capacity to
fabricate lies to foment war, terrorize billions and derail the peace
process is not over yet. The world holds its breath and lives in fear
while this mother of all terrorists begs for an opportunity to wage war.

Turkey prepares to stake claim in Iraq's oil fields
By Amberin Zaman in Ankara
(Filed: 07/01/2003)

Turkey, one of Washington's most important allies
against Saddam Hussein, claimed yesterday that it may have a historical stake in Iraq's
northern oil fields.

Yasar Yakis, the foreign minister, said he was examining treaties from the early 20th
century
to see whether Turkey had a claim to the oil fields of the Mosul and Kirkuk provinces,
which
the Turks ruled during Ottoman times.

In comments published yesterday in the Hurriyet newspaper, Mr Yakis said: "If we do
have
such rights, we have to explain this to the international community and our partners
in order
to secure those rights."

His comments will not be welcomed in the United States or the region, where there are
considerable anxieties about the likely results of a war on the integrity of Iraq.

While Mr Yakis was careful to emphasise that Turkey had no territorial claims over the
provinces, his comments were greeted with anger by Arab diplomats in Ankara.

"He is revealing Turkey's true intentions. They are playing a dangerous game," said one
senior Arab diplomat, who declined to be identified.

However, Western diplomats interpreted Mr Yakis's remarks as a further attempt to
discourage the Iraqi Kurds from making a play for the provinces during an eventual war
against Baghdad.

The Iraqi Kurds, who have controlled the north of the country - but not the oil fields
- since
the 1991 Gulf war, say that Kirkuk is historically a Kurdish city and should be the
capital of
the semi- independent state they are demanding in exchange for support in a war against
Saddam Hussain.

Such claims have angered Turkey, which claims that Kirkuk and Mosul are dominated not
by the Kurds but by an ethnic Turkish group called the Turcomans.

In recent years, Turkey has been arming and training a Turcoman faction in northern
Iraq
known as the Turcoman Front as its stalking horse in the Kurdish-controlled enclave.

Ankara's top generals have taken turns to threaten to invade Iraqi Kurdistan should the
Kurds try to break away from Baghdad. Some 5,000 Turkish troops are already deployed in
and around Iraqi Kurdish territory held by Massoud Barzani, the leader of the stronger
of the
two Kurdish factions controlling northern Iraq.

The troops are officially there to hunt down Kurdish separatist PKK guerrillas who
fought a
15-year insurgency against Turkish troops that ended in 1999 after the capture of their
leader, Abdullah Ocalan.

Iraq is home to the world's second-largest oil reserves after Saudi Arabia and before
the
1991 Gulf war more than half of the country's oil exports were pumped through a dual
pipeline running from Kirkuk to Turkey's southern Mediterranean port of Ceyhan.

The pipeline was sealed in compliance with United Nations sanctions after Iraq's 1990
invasion of Kuwait. It was re-opened in 1996 under the UN's oil for food programme,
which
allows Iraq to export its oil in order to purchase humanitarian supplies.

Iraq has repeatedly accused America of wanting to seize control of its oil under the
pretext of
installing a democratic government in Baghdad.

Turkey's claims to Iraqi oil date back to the early 1920s when the Ottoman Empire was
being carved up following its defeat by the Allies in the First World War. Under a
treaty
signed by the new Turkish Republic and Britain, Turkey was to receive 10 per cent of
all Iraqi
oil revenues for a 25-year period in exchange for renouncing its territorial claims
over Mosul
and Kirkuk.

That treaty was suspended in 1958 under the government of Adnan Menderes, the late
Turkish premier, as a gesture of goodwill towards Iraq. But subsequent governments
sought
to revive the treaty.

"Such initiatives by Turkey will go nowhere," said Baskin Oran, a professor of
international
relations at Ankara University, who has studied the treaties.

According to Prof Oran's own estimates, Turkey is not due any more than £20 million in
unpaid revenue stemming from its 1926 treaty rights.

When the doorbell rings, Daniel Denton rises from the couch.

"Ah, Martin!" he says, opening the door a crack. "Babe, Martin is here," he shouts to
his
wife, who rushes to get her veil and fits it around her face tightly, so none of her
wiry black
hair shows. The couple hasn't seen Martin in months. He is Daniel's cousin and has just
arrived in Stockton after a day's drive from Rosarito, Mexico.

Roxanne approaches the door, smiling reassuringly. "How are you Martin? Come on in."

"Fine," Martin says, but he stays put, out there in the November cold, his heavy boots
not
budging, no matter how many times Roxanne invites him in.

Five hundred miles of driving and still nothing can convince him to enter their warm
living
room, decorated with colorful Mexican sarapes. His discomfort is palpable, as is
Roxanne's
frustration.

They both know the problem. If he were to come in, he would have to take off his
boots. He'd
have to leave his dignity and manhood at the door next to his niece's tiny pink
sneakers and
Roxanne's flip-flops, and then feel naked in his socks, holding the glass of water or
tea that
his cousin's wife would offer him.

No, he stays outside, his feet bound in well-worn leather, in the chilly wind, and
chats with
his shoeless cousin about the traffic on the highway, the workload of a traveling
mechanic,
but not the single most important thing in Daniel's life: Islam.

Once upon a time, Daniel -- like Martin, like 93 percent of the Mexican population --
was
Catholic. Growing up in Tijuana, his mother taught him to go to church, but when he
was 22
years old, Daniel walked away from the Catholic doctrine and embraced a faith virtually
unknown in his world.

For years, the Vatican has struggled to keep its Latin American sheep from dispersing
into
less "acceptable" folds of Christianity -- evangelical Protestant sects, Mormonism and
the
Jehovah's Witnesses.

Islam, with its veiled women and monthlong fasting, has not even been on the priestly
radar
screen. But its numbers are growing.

Thousands of Hispanics -- estimates range from 50,000 to 75,000 -- now attend mosques
all over the United States, according to the American Muslim Council, an Islamic
advocacy
group.

Daniel's departure from the church is in line with a much older tradition of
anti-Catholic
sentiment in Mexico. Liberals and church had been antagonistic since the establishment
of
the Mexican republic in 1823, says Alex Saragoza, professor of Mexican history at
University
of California, Berkeley.

>From Benito Juarez, the president who declared the separation of church and state in
>1857,
to the Cristero war from 1926 to 1929, when armed Catholics revolted after the
government
suspended many of their rights, certain sectors of Mexican leadership have discounted
religion. Now, after more than two decades of intermittent economic crisis and
political
scandal, belief in all Mexican institutions, including the church, is diluted, and
traditional and
cultural practices that had long dominated life are replaced by imports, from music to
faith,
says Saragoza.

"Mexican youth are looking toward spirituality that is not tied to any institutional
form of
religion," he adds.

Transfer this situation across the border, where instead of a cohesive religious
system there
is a myriad of options, and cases like Daniel's will start emerging from places like
Stockton
and Los Angeles, New York and San Antonio.

In a sense, their journey is no different from that of other young Americans, exposed
to the
limitless lifestyle choices available, says Saragoza.

"It's almost like a buffet. You take what you want," he explains. "It's like guacamole
in a
sandwich. I'm sure the Aztecs never thought of putting it on white bread with luncheon
meat." But in a country like the United States, where new and old cultures are in
constant
flux, that's what ends up happening.

Daniel's is the story of one man's conversion. It wouldn't have happened in Mexico,
where
Islam is virtually unknown, but his new country provides the freedom to pick and choose
among diverse belief systems.

Being Muslim involves intensive juggling to meet secular and religious obligations --
especially hard during Ramadan, when Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Koran
to prophet Mohammed by setting aside from dawn to dusk all their worldly desires and
wake
up before 5 a.m. to eat.

Changing spiritual stations can be a challenge. As we shall see, it has had profound
effects
on Daniel's thinking, his family, his lifestyle, his career and even his view of his
heritage.

Meat from Dying, Sick or Diseased Cows Getting into Food

 KIRO 7 Video

Chris Halsne
KIRO 7 EYEWITNESS NEWS INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER
A KIRO Team 7 Investigation discovers an explosive story about meat from dying, sick or
diseased cows getting into your food.

Some images are exceptionally disturbing and may be upsetting, especially to children.

Investigative Reporter Chris Halsne spent six months under cover, exposing something
the
meat industry would rather keep secret from consumers.

They're called "downers," getting that name because healthy cattle walk into the
slaughterhouse but the "downers" are too ill or injured to do so.

Video shot by KIRO Team 7 Investigators raises serious questions about the quality or
safety of this kind of beef.

We've seen a healthy cow, one you might expect to become steak some day.

Downers, however, are delivered by pick-up truck to slaughter horizontally, in a pile
of
manure. This meat gets to your dinner plate with the help of some hoisting and
dragging.

Gaylis Linville wonders how downers can become food. She's a consumer expert of sorts
when it comes to food safety. Her son, Max, nearly died from an E. coli-contaminated
Jack in
the Box hamburger.

She was surprised to learn from our videotape that sick, diseased, or injured dairy
cattle still
make their way into federally-inspected slaughterhouses.

"I don't understand how it can be accepted and ground up into the food supply. It
seems like
that type of animal should go to a rendering plant," Linville says.

The US Department of Agriculture labels downers "high-risk or suspect" but under proper
inspection allows their use for hamburger, soups and hot dogs.

That's a dangerous practice, according to former USDA veterinarian Dr. Lester
Friedlander.
He trained federal meat inspectors for years, and has personally examined hundreds of
thousands of downers.

"If it was up to me, I'd probably condemn all downers because I wouldn't want to take
the
chance of my family eating it," Dr. Friedlander says.

Federal law is clear: livestock found in a dying condition shall be condemned and
disposed.
Dr Friedlander says federal meat inspectors routinely ignore that segment of the food
safety
regulation under pressure from plant owners and the USDA.

That brings us back to our surveillance video. KIRO Team 7 Investigators recorded
several
hours worth of downer transactions at Midway Meats in Chehalis. A number of animals we
saw enter the plant were too sick or injured to even stand up.

We asked Friedlander and another former USDA vet to review large portions of our
unedited
tape.

"After looking at a tape like this you ask 'Where do you think fecal contamination
comes
from? Is this a good source? Obviously, it is a good source, the main source.'"

Friedlander isn't offended by unconscious cows hanging by their necks, but is outraged
he
doesn't see white-coated federal meat inspectors doing their jobs. He says if the
downers we
videotaped were healthy enough to eat, the USDA inspector wouldn't know it.

Midway Meats says our videotape doesn't tell the whole story. Some cows may look
lifeless,
but that's because they were stunned with a captive bolt gun while inside the trailer,
where
we couldn't see.

Owners of the plant also say USDA vets examined the animals inside the trailers. Again,
that's something we didn't see.

Bill Sexsmith owns Midway Meats.

"I have every confidence in the world that the meat that goes through is absolutely
safe,"
Sexsmith says.

He says USDA vets review all his downer business and do a good job at disqualifying
diseased animals.

"It has to be done effectively or they'll tag us and we can't continue to operate."

Sexsmith says federal meat inspectors do a quick health check in his parking lot but
normally retest downers inside the plant as well. Some national experts like Dr.
Friedlander
tell KIRO Team 7 Investigators the risks of processing downers at all are just too
great.

"If you take care of the downers, you'd probably see a lower incidence of these
outbreaks of
E. Coli," Friedlander says.

Gaylis Linville, who watched her son suffer for three months from E. Coli, would love
to see
downer meat banned.

"There's not anything here to debate. Clearly it's a sick animal being dragged into a
slaughterhouse and USDA inspectors are just turning the other cheek and letting this
occur!" she says.

Midway Meats owner Bill Sexsmith says he's unaware of any consumer complaints regarding
quality or safety of his products.

We repeatedly asked the USDA to comment on the apparent lack of proper outside
inspection by their vets, but so far, nothing.

Congress recently banned the use of downer meat in the federal school lunch program.
However, there is no current requirement for meat processors inform consumers about
downer meat or label packages that may contain it.

If you want to comment on the use of downers to Congressional members on the

Broader U.S. spy initiative debated

Poindexter leads project to assess electronic data, detect possible terrorists; Civil
liberties
concerns raised

By Susan Baer
Sun National Staff

January 5, 2003

WASHINGTON -- Even its name, some say, is ominous and Orwellian, conjuring up visions
of Big Brother tracking your video rentals, prescriptions or e-mail: "Total Information
Awareness."

To privacy advocates and civil libertarians, this government supercomputer project is
nothing
less than domestic spying, the chilling first step toward a surveillance society. The
man
leading it, former Iran-contra figure John M. Poindexter, only adds to what critics
call the
"spook factor."

But to security specialists, the drive to develop a network of public and private
databases
could be crucial to identifying terrorists before they strike and to preventing
another Sept. 11.

Total Information Awareness, which officials say is in the experimental phase and
years from
being used, is a project of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the
Pentagon's research arm. Since the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, DARPA has
developed technologies for the military. It led the way in the creation of the
Internet.

The goal of the Total Information Awareness program is a global computer surveillance
system that could sift through mountains of personal information in databases --
credit card
purchases, telephone calls and e- mails, medical prescriptions, passports, driver's
licenses,
school records, magazine subscriptions, gun purchases -- to look for suspicious
patterns
and ultimately identify potential terrorists.

Poindexter, a national security adviser to President Ronald Reagan whose felony
convictions
in the Iran- contra scandal were overturned on appeal, says such a system could help
track
terrorists who can now move freely without detection.

"Total Information Awareness -- a prototype system -- is our answer," said Poindexter,
a
retired Navy rear admiral, during a speech last summer.

"One of the significant new data sources that needs to be mined to discover and track
terrorists is the 'transaction space,'" he said. "If terrorist organizations are going
to plan and
execute attacks against the United States, their people must engage in transactions,
and
they will leave signatures in this information space."

Privacy advocates say that giving the government access to such data could subject
innocent citizens to scrutiny and that, in the wrong hands, the information could be
used to
intimidate political foes -- much as J. Edgar Hoover's FBI exploited the gathering of
intelligence to harass critics of the Nixon administration.

The program "is the mother of all privacy invasions," complains Jay Stanley of the
American
Civil Liberties Union. "It would amount to a picture of your life so complete it's
equivalent to
somebody following you around all day with a video camera."

But many security specialists say such technology is worth considering and point out
that it
would have to stand up to legal challenges.

"In this environment, we have to engage in very aggressive, exhaustive research and
development efforts," says Phil Anderson, an international security senior fellow at
the
Center for Strategic and International Studies. "If they're inappropriate, then they
never make
it through the legal system. Reason -- and our great Constitution -- prevails."

Poindexter's role

Poindexter, who has worked as a DARPA contractor for several years, approached the
Pentagon with the idea after the Sept. 11 attacks and discussed it over lunch with
Defense
Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.

Early last year, Poindexter was made head of DARPA's Information Awareness Office,
which
is also working on technologies to identify people at great distances through facial
features
and gait. The TIA program's budget was set at $137 million for this fiscal year.

After recent criticism, Poindexter and the office have kept a low profile. A DARPA
spokeswoman said that neither Poindexter nor any other agency official was available to
discuss the project.

Even the Web site for the Information Awareness Office has been toned down. Until
recently, the site featured as its emblem an all-knowing eye atop a pyramid -- with
its sights
set on the entire globe -- and a Latin motto meaning "knowledge is power." A redesigned
Web site now has no such logo or slogan.

Differing policies

Specialists in technology policy tend to support Poindexter's basic theory that
linking and
comparing databases could yield valuable information.

For example, a report by the Markle Foundation, a private philanthropic group that
focuses
on information technology, showed how the Sept. 11 hijackers could have been identified
before the attacks if the names of all airline passengers had been run through the
government's "watch list" of su

Gangs of New York

by Al Gore

(Typing by P.J. Gladnick)

Hooker?

Gangs Of New York had the potential of being a great movie but failed in large part
due to
Leonardo DiCrapio giving one of DiCrapiest performances ever seen on the big screen.
With
all the millions they pay him, you would think that DiCrapio would make just a little
effort to
mimic something of a convincing New York Irish accent.

Instead, we hear DiCrapio veering over to a fake sounding Irish brogue only to quickly
lapse
back to a jaded Hollywood nightclubbing drawl. And what DiCrapio was doing on the
screen
wasn't even acting. It was more like marking time until DiCrapio could crawl back to
his
superstar trailer.

But should we be surprised? Have you ever seen DiCaprio's non-performance in The
Beach? That movie was so bad that if Michael Medved ever updates his Fifty Worst Movies
Of All Time, it would surely supplant The Trial Of Billy Jack on that list.

Almost as ridiculous as Leonardo DiCrapio's sleepwalking through the role of Amsterdam
Vallon was Cameron Diaz trying to pass herself off as a common street whore, Jenny,
with
pickpocketing talents in the Five Corners slum section of New York in 1863. Who can
believe glamour girl Cameron as a slum whore for a nickel a throw? However, I don't
blame
just director Martin Scorsese for this particular bit of miscasting. Hollywood has
never
realistically portrayed hookers on the big screen.

Take a look at Hollywood Westerns. Even if the scene is a saloon in a small dust
covered
Old West town, all the hookers would look like either Ann-Margret, Ursula Undress, or
Anita
Ekberg (as they appeard 40 years ago). Not only were the Hollywood Old West saloon
whores always great looking but they could also sing and dance. To believe these
movies,
you could picture some broken down cowpoke telling his buddy:

"Well, Clem. I sure do like that Ursula Undress but she just can't sing near as well
as Ann-
Margret so I think I'll take a roll in the hay with Annie tonight."

The sad truth is that the whores (or what they called "soiled doves") of the Old West
were
mostly GROTESQUE. Take a look at the photos of the hookers from that era…big fat, and
ugly beyond belief. However, the cowboys back then weren't very picky. After a couple
of
months on the cattle drive, even Elsie the cow would look like hot stuff. Come to
think of it,
what do you think those cowboys were doing with some of the prettier cows out on the
cattle
trail? They didn't call them "cowpokes" for nothing.

No wonder cowboys hated sheepherders. It had nothing to do with grazing rights. They
were
just jealous of all the great action the sheepherders were getting with their flocks.

Yeah, so if you were ever transported back in time to the Five Points area of New York
in
1863, you sure ain't gonna see many Cameron Diazes working the streets. If Scorsese
wanted accuracy, he would have cast Rosie O'Donnell in the hooker role…and pulled out
about a dozen of her teeth for authenticity.

Even dumber than casting Cameron Diaz as a whore was Amsterdam's angry reaction when
Jenny told him that she might be putting out for William "Bill the Butcher" Cutting as
played
by Daniel Day- Lewis. If I were Amsterdam, I would be a little more concerned about the
THOUSAND other guys that Jenny the Hooker spread her legs for. Instead of getting
morally
outraged about Jenny getting boinked by Bill the Butcher, Amsterdam should have been
sweating over the fact that his "beloved" probably had the Clap.

What do you think the odds were of a street hooker working the bums of Five Points back
then at about a nickel a throw NOT carrying some horrible social disease? How about
somewhere between Nil and None?

But, of course, Hollywood rarely presents the disease scourge carried by hookers.
Instead,
according to their distorted view, it was all fun and games with Ann-Margret or Ursula
Undress or Anita Ekberg or…..Cameron Diaz. To reflect the reality of prostitution back
then,
they should have had a scene of Amsterdam in a doctor's office with dialogue like this:

AMSTERDAM: Doc, my Talleywhacker has been painfully oozing red and green stuff ever
since I shtooped Jenny. I must have the Clap so could you give me a teaspoon of mercury
for a quickie cure?

DOCTOR: Well, Amsterdam. I have good news and I have bad news for you.

AMSTERDAM: What's the good news?

DOCTOR: You don't have the Clap.

AMSTERDAM: So what's the bad news?

DOCTOR: You've got the Syph. However, I've got some more good news and bad news for
you.

AMSTERDAM: Okay, this time give me the bad news first.

DOCTOR: Syph is incurable. You're going to die a long agonizing death and go insane in
the process.

AMSTERAM: Now tell me the good news.

DOCTOR: I just bought a brand new revolver. It can put you instantly out of your misery
without you feeling a thing.

Depressing, huh? And a far cry from the glamour girl portrayal of prostitution back
then by
Cameron Diaz. Of course

Peace or permanent war Israel's choices
Athens | By Linda S. Heard | 07/01/2003

A British-born Israeli coloniser of the West Bank is attempting to sue the European
Union in
the sum of $20 million for the death of his wife and injuries to his daughter at the
hands of
two Palestinian militants. Stephen Bloomberg said: "My parents in England are paying
taxes
going in part to helping the EU which is pouring millions of euros every month into the
Palestinian Authority".

EU commissioner Chris Patten has refuted Bloomberg's contention saying, "The EU takes
allegations of misuse of its funds extremely seriously. We investigate all such
allegations,
but have found no evidence that our funds have been diverted into support of
terrorism".

In the extremely unlikely event that Bloomberg should succeed in his mission, it could
set a
precedent, opening the gates for thousands of Palestinians to take the U.S. and the
British
governments to court for their pain and suffering. Without American taxpayers' money
the
State of Israel would not be able to function, and without American and British
weapons it
would not have the dubious status of being the third greatest military power in the
world. In
the case of Israel, proving state-sponsored terrorism shouldn't be difficult.

Further, if donor governments are to be held responsible for the brutal actions of
their state
proteges, then responsible officials in America and Britain could well find themselves
implicated in war crimes. The American president has ensured that his citizens are
immune
from prosecution under the jurisdiction of the new International Court. The British
are not so
fortunate.

Britain now appears cognizant that its weaponry has been used to murder Palestinian
men,
women, children and babies and has imposed an unofficial arms embargo, which could
mean that Israel may have to ground its Phantom fighter-bomber fleet.

While the American government emulates the three wise monkeys when it comes to the
transgressions of Israel, the British cabinet is becoming increasingly uncomfortable
watching
the Jewish state oppress the Palestinians.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has expressed his desire for a speedy Mideast
solution on
numerous occasions, a message he has passed to the region's main players and to George
W. Bush.

The American president has admittedly made numerous conciliatory statements addressing
the concerns of the Arab world - his "visionary" roadmap and wish for a two-state
solution -
but while he talks the talk, he has yet to walk the walk.

In reality, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is calling the shots. He isn't ready
to adhere to a
timetable for peace, he says as much to the fast-greying Texan, the message gets passed
down to Blair who has little choice but to shelve his grandiose plans once more. If we
get
down to the nitty-gritty we have to face the unpalatable fact that without enlightened
and
resolute American leadership, the Mideast conflict will never be solved.

George Bush has often said that he cannot impose peace on the two parties but, in
reality,
he could. All he would have to do is refuse to supply Israel with any more weapons,
spare
parts and aid until Ariel Sharon withdrew his troops from the West Bank and Gaza
Strip, as
a prelude to the resumption of peace talks. Sound simple? It is, but this would
infuriate the
Jewish lobbies and the president's Southern Baptist, Christian Zionist support base.

Riding roughshod over Israel's wishes would be political suicide. Bush junior will
recall that
his father failed to be re-elected in 1992 all because he had delayed approving a loan
guarantee in Israel's favour.

In the meantime, the Israeli government's crimes continue to grow. After all, it has
proved to
be immune from any kind of international censor. It has ignored more than 60 United
Nations resolutions without having to face sanctions of any kind; it has waved away a
UN
fact-finding team set up to investigate Jenin, while its mentor the U.S. vetoed a
recent
Security Council resolution condemning Israel for the killing of UN employees. Israel
has
become a law unto itself.

Not only is Israel a protected country which views its critics with derision, its
military literally
gets away with murder. The Israeli army even ignores orders issued by Israel's own
Supreme Court. On December 24 seven human rights organisations petitioned the
Supreme Court to prevent the Israeli army from using Palestinian civilians as human
shields.

The human rights organisations presented four new cases to the court, which fly in the
face
of an earlier High Court injunction banning the criminal practice. The Fourth Geneva
Convention labels the use of human shields as a war crime, and yet cowardly Israeli
soldiers
still hide behind frightened, unarmed civilians.

The human rights groups also complained to the court about the contempt for Palestinian
lives, which runs through the highest levels of the

Cops go to bars
to arrest drunks

Gestapo-like tactics prompt outrage, complaints among owners, citizenry

© 2003 WorldNetDaily.com

In the ongoing effort to keep public places clear of intoxicated
citizens and drunk drivers, some police agencies are using a
controversial tactic - going directly into bars and restaurants in
order to make arrests.

Such is the situation in northern Virginia, where Fairfax County Police are
targeting patrons suspected of having one too many.
"[Officers] were talking to one of the guests, then physically pulled
him off the barstool," Richie Prisco, general manager at Champps bar told the
Reston Times. "They were really aggressive and nasty."

According to the report, police are hauling customers outside of
establishments to conduct sobriety tests, then arresting them for public
drunkenness should they fail.

Tavern owner Jimmy Cirrito says it was intimidating and unnecessary to
have some ten officers show up in SWAT-like attire. He notes police
seemed to be tagging people at random, despite their telling bar owners
they had undercover agents inside, calling in to provide specific
descriptions of certain individuals.

"They tapped one lady on the shoulder - who was on her first drink and
had just eaten dinner - to take her out on the sidewalk and give her a
sobriety test," Cirrito told the paper. "They told her she fit the
description of a woman they had complaints about, and that they heard
she was dancing topless."

Cirrito said the woman passed the test and was allowed back in, but soon
after, police pulled another woman outside who had arrived shortly
before officers did.

"They made her count backward, say the alphabet, tell them where she
lived, how she got there, how she was getting home," he said. "She had
just gotten there five minutes ago in a cab."

Authorities say such methods are not new, despite protests from bar
owners that they've never heard of police coming inside their
establishments to enforce drinking laws.

"I've been an officer for over 17 years, and we've been doing it on and
off over my entire career," police spokeswoman Sophia Grinnan told the
Times. "As much as officers hate to spoil a good time, they hate even
more to go out at 2 a.m. and work a death of anybody that is
alcohol-related."

Virginia statutes say any business with a liquor license is considered a
public place; therefore, police are allowed free access. If they find
someone over the legal alcohol limit of .08, or suspect a customer of
being intoxicated while still being served or present in an
establishment, police can issue a ticket for public intoxication.

In response to complaints the raids were overly aggressive, Grinnan
said, "I've had bar owners come up to me [and] ask what is going on, but
I've also had some approach me aggressively, telling me I couldn't be
there and I was violating their constitutional rights. We love to give
explanations of what we're doing because it has an impact, but officers
don't have to give up their game plan. That is just a courtesy."

In the wake of the published report, citizens appear to be siding with
the bar owners and patrons, gauging from posts in an online
messageboard.

"The way police are handling the drink situation is the biggest B.S. I
have ever heard of," wrote Ray Williams.

"I lost a son (at age 16) a few years ago, and I most certainly support
stopping anyone from drinking and driving. However, this police raid
that seems to take place at some local bars is just totally crazy. ...
Are we now living in a communist environment where we are not allowed to
do anything without being harassed by the military/police?"

Russ Heisinger of Northport, N.Y., asked: "What is next, the alcohol
police entering your home on Super Bowl Sunday, and inviting you outside
to take a breath test? A solution would be for all the bar and
restaurant owners to become 'private clubs,' and charge a very nominal
fee for membership. However, the true solution is for the 'Barney Fifes'
there to uphold the part of the Constitution about unlawful search, and
to remember that we are after all, a free society, unless the cops think
this is Baghdad!"

Others, like Don Armstrong, urged people to reject field sobriety tests,
and request a blood-alcohol test at a local hospital.

"I have a form of arthritis that often affects my speech patterns and
walking abilities," he wrote. "Under their standards of an acceptable
set of motor functions, I would fail even if I never had an alcoholic
drink."

only White people can be racists eliminated. It creates a witch hunt atmosphere and
probably promotes race crimes against Whites. We want total segregation of the races

anti-White body markings. How nice. How nice to put other racists in a category of
"gang member" in need of a mentor. How nice of them to avoid dealing with the reality
of racially motivated hate rapes. Oh God how we pray that Mo Dees could spend a day in
there.

* We want an end to penalization of economically-disadvantaged White males in
affirmative action. Studies as to why White boys on anti-depressants are shooting up
schools. Studies regarding the racial makeup of those put on anti-depressants. Studies
that ask why White girls have the lowest self-esteem. Studies concerning "White
flight." Studies of how classism and racism affect rural Whites. In short, we'd like
a little measure of equality instead of having feet stomped upon our heads and our
hands tied behind our back solely on the basis of my race. If we don't address these
issues, there will be more "intolerance" and "hate."

Instead of pushing away the legitimate concerns of Whites, it is time to
address those concerns, without having to endure these idiotic, clueless White zombie
elitists. In case you think open discussion will promote hate crimes, do you worry
about hatred promoted against the White race when they are the target of scapegoating
day in and day out on TV, on radio and in the papers?

Minority racists get away with saying anything they please and held not held
to the same standards. They can use any racial slur they wish in any venue they can
produce music that calls for murdering White people. The offices of their producers
don't get raided and no White person has the guts to organize protests outside of
music stores that promote violent anti-White racism.

Consider how Whites may not speak of anything good about their race, but can
only be racially-minded when they are expressing White guilt. When you put an animal
in a cage and poke at him, he will bite. That is the first rule of "redneck" realism.
Understand and ABSORB these words from someone who has been on the other side of the
debate, repeating stupid liberal sound bites and creating an atmosphere of White
self-loathing.

The stereotyping of Whites MUST STOP. Those who do it must realize they base
their ideology on stereotypes. We must speak out or we will be buried. The majority of
working Whites know this, but are too intimidated to be honest. Instead of worrying
about being an outcast, it is time European-Americans start worrying about the climate
of hatred being created in a society where their children and grandchildren will be a
minority.

LISTEN CAREFULLY TO THE HATEFUL ANTI-WHITE VENOM SPEWED OUT ON A DAILY BASIS
AND THE DEMONIZATION OF OUR KINFOLK. In your heart, do you believe these people will
treat your descendants fairly in this society? If the answer is no, then
self-determination should be the legacy my generation leaves to it's children.
regardless of the intimidation and persecution we will face for even mentioning the
White race.

Contaminated goods

Osama El-Baz* reminds Arab and Islamic proponents of anti-Semitism that they are
purveying shoddy goods of purely Western make. The article is an abridged version of a
three-part study published in the Arabic daily Al-Ahram

Over the last three centuries European society has given rise to an idiosyncratic
series of
events and ideas that are absolutely specific, both geographically and historically.
The
peoples of the Middle East, like other non-Europeans, remained remote from these
developments, not only in terms of physical distance but also in terms of their
outlook on
human nature and their own social and psychological circumstances. They have found --
and continue to find -- it difficult to comprehend the nature of such developments, to
understand the ethos and spirit that gave rise to an important body of humanitarian
thought.
Europe witnessed several revolutions and widespread social upheaval while
simultaneously
experiencing rapid and intensive scientific and technological progress. It also
witnessed
many manifestations of a blend of blind prejudice and a sense of inherent superiority
over
other "uncivilised" and "backward" peoples producing, among other things, an
imperialist
colonial movement, which proceeded in tandem with a vaunted spirit of enlightenment and
the prodigious philosophical, intellectual and practical accomplishments that
benefited all
mankind.

Another manifestation of the irrationality peculiar to the European mindset was the
prevalent
attitude towards Jews, collectively and as individuals. Jews were inferior and the
object of
suspicion because they were "different" in their religion, appearance and behaviour.
And it
was precisely these differences that served as pretexts for intimidation, persecution
and, at
times, the annihilation of entire populations. Fear and hatred of Jews existed across
all of
Europe and assumed its most virulent forms in the Russian pogroms and, later, in the
Nazi
holocaust.

It was during this period of glaring inconsistency between leaps forward in material
and
intellectual progress and jumps backwards in moral attitudes and behaviour that the
term
anti-Semitism was first used, coined in Germany in 1873 by Wilhelm Marr. Subsequently,
some European intellectuals would distinguish between "anti-Jewish" and "anti-Semitic"
sentiments.

The former, they argued, denotes prejudice of a purely religious nature, and is
grounded in
the Jews non-acknowledgment of Jesus Christ as the Messiah and their responsibility
for his
crucifixion. Anti- Semitism, on the other hand, was directed against a group of
people, a
volk, thought to share certain physical and behavioural characteristics that have no
direct
bearing on religious affiliation. The term thus signified a hatred of Jews based on
ethnic and
racial prejudices and, consequently, assumed secular connotations. According to this
distinction "anti-Jewish" ceases once a Jew converts to Christianity whereas
"anti-Semitism",
a fundamentally racist concept, persists and pursues its victim regardless of religion.

Because anti-Semitism is a secular concept and not contiguous with religious
affiliation, its
proponents required particular proofs to back the theory. Among the most broadly
disseminated "proofs" were the notorious Protocols of the Elders of Zion and the tales
of
Christian blood in Jewish matzo. Although such claims have never been corroborated,
their
widespread currency fuelled hatred and fear of Jews.

The so-called Protocols -- of which there were 24 in the original 110-page version --
were
attributed to a cabal of rabbis who ostensibly published them in 1897, with the
purpose of
recording their conspiracy to create a global empire subject to Jewish rule.
Freemasons,
liberals, secularists, atheists and socialists were variously accused of conspiring
with these
rabbis to achieve their dream of world domination.

There is a large body of evidence suggesting the Protocols were a forgery. It is hardly
credible that a handful of individuals from a small minority should meet and set down
their
scheme to rule the world in a 110-page pamphlet that would be exposed sooner or later.
Several experts have also pointed to a work that appeared in 1864 by Maurice Joly,
Dialogue
in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, or Politics in the 19th Century, which has
many stylistic similarities to the Protocols. And is it not a little strange that a
group of rabbis
would write a document of this type without using a single word of Hebrew, the
language of
the Torah and Talmud, or Yiddish, the language of Ashkenazi Jews which is still used in
newspapers in Europe and the Americas today?

Given the revolutions and upheavals Europe experienced in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries it is likely that the Protocols were produced by conservative elements
seeking to

Things to come

Israel's probable next government is already flexing its muscles. And it is ringing
alarms
across the region, writes Graham Usher in Jerusalem

With polls showing the Israeli electorate poised to return a Likud-led coalition for
the Israeli
elections on 28 January, several decisions this week have underscored its emerging
political
culture: aggressively nationalist, occasionally messianic and exclusively Zionist.
Coupled
with the threat of a US-led war on Iraq, it will cast the darkest of shadows across
the region.

The culture can be gauged from the verdicts so far delivered by Israel's Central
Elections
Committee, a cross-party panel currently sitting to hear 13 requests to disqualify
candidates
and parties running for the 16th Knesset, including Israel's three main Arab lists:
Hadash-
Ta'al, the United Arab List and Azmi Bishara's Balad Party.

The first sign of things to come occurred on Sunday, when the 41-member panel voted to
approve the candidacy of Baruch Marvel. Marvel is the "former" leader of Israel's
racist Kach
movement, which advocates the transfer of Palestinians from Israel and the occupied
territories and was banned in Israel after one of followers, Baruch Goldstein, shot
dead 29
Palestinians while at prayer in Hebron's Ibrahimi mosque in February 1994.

Marvel says Kach no longer exists and that he now accepts "the principles of
democracy",
evidenced by his decision to join Israel's far-right Herut Party (whose platform also
calls for
"encouraging the emigration" of Palestinians). Twenty-one members of the CEC said they
believed him, including MKs from Likud, the National Religious Party and Shas. The 18
other members did not, including the Labour Party, Meretz, the Arab lists and the
committee's chairman, Justice Mishael Cheshin.

"An examination of the material brought before us shows that Marzel is the leader or
one of
the important leaders of Kach. There is absolutely no doubt Marzel is [still]
connected [to the
movement] and ... working for the same disgusting aims as in the past," said Cheshin.
The
Labour Party has said it will petition Israel's High Court of Justice to overturn the
decision.

A similar fate awaits Ahmed Tibi, former aide to Yasser Arafat and leader of Israel's
Ta'al
Party or Arab Party for renewal. On Monday the CEC heard requests for the
disqualification
of Ta'al, Hadash, the UAL as well as its leader Abdul-Malik Dahamshe. It rejected all
four but
approved a ban on Tibi because he defines the PLO as a national liberation movement and
supports the Intifada. It was a charge to which he, together with just about every
other
Palestinian, could only plead guilty.

"I am a new kind of [Israeli] Arab, a proud leader with a homeland," he told the CEC on
Monday. "We are finished with the mukhtars who did everything they were told."

He also charged that the CEC's judgment was not only about his national identification
but a
ploy to remove any kind of political representation for Israel's Palestinian minority.
"We have
been kicked out of the community and delegitimised. We are being told we don't have the
right to protest, to hold a different opinion." Tibi will also appeal this
disqualification before
Israel's High Court of Justice.

So, almost certainly, will Bishara and his Balad Party, currently expected to retain
its two
seats in the next Knesset.

Last February Bishara was stripped of his parliamentary immunity for speeches in which
he
hailed Hizbullah's liberation of south Lebanon and defended the right of Palestinians
to
resist occupation. Based on undisclosed "secret" evidence supplied by Israel's Shin Bet
intelligence service, his Balad Party is now being accused of aiming to destroy the
state of
Israel, aiding "enemies of the state" and "inciting" Arabs to rebellion. Unlike Tibi's
disqualification, Israel's Attorney-General Elyahim Rubinstein backs Bishara and
Balad's
exclusion.

For this reason, Bishara's lawyers and supporters believe it will be approved. They
also see
the "sedition" charges as a smokescreen. The real motive is political, they insist.
Bishara and
Balad have become the leading advocates of national rights for Israel's Palestinian
minority
and of the call for transforming Israel from being a Jewish state into a state for all
its citizens.
Less than three years ago, Bishara expressed such views from the floor of the Knesset.
Clearly, what was tolerated then to the Israeli consensus is tolerable no more.

If Bishara is disqualified and he and Tibi lose their appeals to High Court, the
impact on the
Palestinians participation in the elections could be dramatic. Parties like Hadash
insist
participation is crucial, if only prevent the expected Likud majority becoming an
absolute
landslide. But many Palestinians see a boycott as the only response to a state that
appears
bent on denying them any form of independent national representation. In this at least
they
agree with an editor

It concerns us more where our stuff is NOT going, whether than where it is
going. People need to be informed about the class issue, and if we deter anyone of any
race from committing a violent crime against another person, we have done our job.
It's not an open discussion of race issues that cause "hate" crimes, it is lack of
honest discussion, and the "for-profit" hate mill that benefits financially and
emotionally from it.

White classists and minority haters will surely try to associate me with evil
because they fear open discussion on these issues. They can try to slander and libel
us by taking what we say out of context, but we hate the strength to meet these
attacks with courage and more writing.

We have come to a point where we am feeling more immune to their racist,
classist attacks. They are just protecting their own dominance, power, and beliefs
that poor people are like children. They fear rednecks with library cards. They fear
Blacks discussing the CIA/drug connection. They fear Louis Farrakhan because he pull
no punches. They fear the Internet because too much truth is being sent out to our
white people all over the world.

Their hold on power is threatened by the truth. The more they push, the more
we should talk. They can hound us, but even if we retreat for a week, we will come
back stronger because hardship and adversity strengthens us.

If they push too hard, they will insure we get funding to do bitch and moan
full-time! Their stereotypes of the "White racist" and total non-understanding of the
roots of "hate" is an advantage to us. Their classism and belief that poor Whites have
no intelligence or character is also an advantage.

THEY ARE NOT REALLY CONCERNED WITH "HATE CRIMES," OR ELSE THEY WOULD ISSUE
PRESS RELEASES WHEN A WHITE IS THE VICTIM. THEY WANT TO KEEP THE POOR MAN QUIET.
BECAUSE OF THEIR ACTIONS, PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF ARE BEING CREATED. People who have little
in financial terms to lose.

Those who are tired of being the scapegoats and are lulled into ignoring the
problems of their own underclass. Those who don't speak against other races, BUT FOR
THEIR OWN. People who don't use insulting racial slurs, and shock others when they
oppose slurs against themselves.

HERE ARE OUR DEMANDS:

* We want White civil rights. The right to talk race (since it is an everyday
part of our lives) the same way minorities do without fear of being the subject of
liberal witch hunts. Without fear of job loss and harassment. Equal standards and
opportunity for all. An end to scapegoating and defamation of my European ancestors.

* We want an end to spitting on the graves of our "dead White people, male and
female" ancestors who built this great country that everyone in the world wants to
live in. An end to judging only our history by today's PC standards. An end to all
racist slurs against Whites, an end to racist and sexist appeals to anti-"White male"
bigotry. An end to racist and sexist jokes and racist & "classist" slurs against
working-class Whites.

* WE want an end to ethnic cleansing of Whites by unprecedented numbers of
hostile anti-White Browns. An end to racist immigration policies that discriminate
against White Europeans.

* WE want an end to the racial profiling of Whites (for hate crimes) promoted
and perpetrated by the Simon Weisenthal Center and their puppet police departments. We
want the tax-funded "hatewatch" groups to start listing more than a few token minority
racist organizations, using the same standards it used to determine if a White group
is "racist."

* We want those minority hate groups listed even if they don't promote
anti-Semitism. For example, the Brown Aztlan racist groups. The Black power groups. If
they continue to list pro-White (as opposed to anti-minority) groups as bigoted, they
must also list pro-Black, Yellow, Brown and Red groups.

* We demand an end to the bigoted F.B.I. calling Brown perpetrators of hate
crimes "White" in the statistics, which is then used to reinforce racist stereotypes
against our people. We demand that police departments ask White victims of
inter-racial crimes (we are victims a whopping 90% of the time, however un-PC that is
to say) if racial slurs were used during the attack. Especially rape since it involves
sexism. We want anti-White graffiti listed as an anti-White hate crime. If the
perpetrator is Brown, we don't want him listed as being in the "White" race
perpetrator category. We want exposure of the fact that even though more Blacks are
sentenced to the death penalty, more poor Whites are actually executed.

What next in growing crisis between U.S. and North Korea?

Wall Street Journal
Published 01/05/2003

QWhat does the United States know about the status of North Korea's nuclear- weapons
program?

AThe U.S. government and most outside experts believe that North Korea already has
separated enough bomb-grade plutonium to make at least two nuclear weapons.

QWhat started this current dispute?

AThe Bush administration confronted North Korea with evidence in October that made
Pyongyang officials admit it has a clandestine uranium-enrichment program. It appears
to be
aimed at making highly enriched uranium, an explosive metal that is used in nuclear
warheads.

QWhy is North Korea's secret program regarded as so important?

AIn 1994, North Korea signed an agreement with the Clinton administration to resolve an
earlier crisis by agreeing to freeze its nuclear-weapons program, which was based on
the
use of plutonium. In return, the United States agreed to help supply North Korea with a
small amount of heavy fuel oil and two South Korean-built nuclear reactors to provide
North
Korea with electric power. The hidden uranium-enrichment program was a fundamental
violation of the 1994 pact.

QHow is the conflict escalating?

AThe Bush administration cut off the fuel-oil shipments in November and, last month,
temporarily stopped a North Korean shipment of Scud missiles bound for Yemen. A day
after the Scud incident, North Korea said it was removing U.N. inspection equipment and
restarting plutonium-separation operations at its main nuclear complex at Yongbyon.
"The
concern is that if they continue operations at Yongbyon they might be able to double
or triple
that arsenal within six months," said Leonard Spector, director of the Washington
office of
the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

QWhat are the military risks?

AThey are substantial, but not necessarily nuclear. Most of North Korea's 950,000-man
army is poised near the peninsula's demilitarized zone, which puts parts of South
Korea's
capital, Seoul, within artillery range. A conventional clash could, potentially,
involve hundreds
of thousands of casualties, including some among 37,000 U.S. troops there.

QWould North Korea launch an attack?

AU.S. officials and outside experts appear split on this. North Korea's army is a
poorly
supplied antique, loaded with 1950s and '60s weapons, that is used primarily to keep
internal order.

QWhat does North Korea want?

AEngagement and aid from the United States and its allies appear to be the main goals,
but
getting caught cheating on the earlier deal would appear to make any new agreement very
difficult. Still, some outside experts remain hopeful that U.S. diplomats can find a
way to
freeze both nuclear-weapons programs. "These guys [North Korean officials] want to
become billionaires selling real estate in the DMZ. They don't want a potential war,"
said
Peter Hayes, director of the Nautilus Institute, a think tank in Berkeley, Calif.

The War Against Life

by Butler Shaffer

It is interesting to observe so many Americans trying to find "meaning" in the Bush
administration’s war against an endless parade of "enemies." From Afghanistan to Iraq
to
North Korea, the state continues to concoct "threats" for the consumption of a public
that is
neither empirically nor analytically demanding. The media are quick to play their
assigned
roles, providing state-generated "information" and self-styled "experts" to convince
the rest of
us that everything the White House tells us is "just so," and that anyone who dissents
from –
or even questions – the state’s purposes or policies is likely an apologist for
terrorism!

The state’s ability to gull most of its citizens into an acceptance of politically
defined reality
has been made possible by one of the few successful state institutions: the government
school system. Contrary to those who look upon government schools as failures, I have
long
regarded them as shining accomplishments for state purposes: to produce herd-oriented
men and women incapable of making independent judgments, and who are thus prepared
to submit to external authorities for direction in their lives. In the words of Ivan
Illich, "[s]chool
is the advertising agency which makes you believe that you need the society as it is."

Almost all graduates of government schools share an ignorance of the nature of social
institutions. The study of such fields as history, economics, and government have long
been
confined to a compilation of names, dates, organizational descriptions, and other
disconnected data; but with little genuine critical analysis that would call into
question
institutionally accepted political or social doctrines. I suspect that the typical
government
school alumnus is more adept at spotting politically incorrect rhetoric, or putting a
condom
on a banana, than he or she is in explaining the causes or consequences of World War I.
While most haven’t the slightest understanding of how political systems actually
operate,
they have learned their catechisms about the virtues of "democracy" (i.e., the
illusion that
they and a friend have twice the political influence of David Rockefeller)! While the
bald eagle
does represent the predatory nature of the state, I believe it is time to adopt a
national
symbol that more accurately reflects the mindset of most Americans: the parrot!

Of course, it is not in the interests of the state – or of those who profit from
statism – to have
the nature of political systems explored; for to do so, might cause even the
institutionally-
deferential students to catch on to the vicious game being played at their expense. It
is not
enough to understand that the state often resorts to war: war is its fundamental
nature.
Every political institution – from the local Weed Control Authority to the United
States of
America – depends, for its existence, upon men and women being conditioned to submit to
the force and violence exercised by government authorities. The state is nothing more
than
institutionalized violence that we have become conditioned to revere.

Herein lies the fundamental distinction between the marketplace and political systems:
in the
marketplace, people are persuaded to cooperate and exchange with one another in
anticipation of being rewarded for doing so. Political systems, by contrast, induce
participation in their schemes through compulsion. In place of rewards, threats to the
loss of
one’s life, liberty, or property are held out as the consequences of disobedience. I
have
always found it remarkable that so many men and women are prepared to distrust any and
all businessmen – whose appeals, in a free market, they are free to ignore – while
trusting
even the most corrupt or cruel politician – whose demands they fail to meet at their
peril.

But how do political systems secure such servility to force and violence? Why would
otherwise intelligent human beings submit to such an abject condition? The state
operates
on the basis of the most inhumane and anti-social premises – behaviors that we insist
upon
criminalizing if done by private parties – and yet we tell ourselves that we cannot
live well
without such brutal practices. Why?

Much of the explanation, I suspect, is to be found in our sense of fear: both of
ourselves and
others. Having been institutionally trained to distrust our capacities for
self-directed lives,
while having unfailing confidence in the judgments of institutional leaders, most of
us have
grown up fearing our own sense of responsibility. To be free is to be accountable for
one’s
actions. But it is not to others that we fear accountability, but to ourselves. In the
words of
Epictetus: "It is a man’s own judgments which disturb him." The state is as eager to
relieve
us of this sense of disquiet as most of us are to give it up.

In looking to others – particularly institutional authorities – to make decisions on
our
