[CTRL] Questions Mount Over New Hampshire's Primary

NOTE: Thanks to John Kaminski for this. -- kl, pp From: "Lynn Landes" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue Feb 10, 2004 9:06:24 PM Asia/Bangkok Subject: Questions Mount Over New Hampshire's Primary Questions Mount Over New Hampshire's Primary by Lynn Landes 2/10/04 It's been all downhill for Howard Dean since he lost the New Hampshire primary by a significant margin. But, now questions are being raised about the security of New Hampshire's voting system in the wake of a recent analysis of the election results. It could add up to nothing, but it does underscore how easily technology can be used to sabotage the voting process. Only one company, Massachusetts-based LHS Associates, Inc., programs and services all of New Hampshire's optical (ballot) scanners. Only two manufacturers, GOP-friendly Diebold and ESS, provide all of the state's scanning equipment. And only Microsoft's Excel software tallies the results of all of those machines. It looks like New Hampshire has put all its eggs in one basket. However, New Hampshire is unusual. Unlike many states that allow ballot-less voting, in 1995 the New Hampshire legislature passed a law that requires paper ballots in all elections. Has this law made New Hampshire's voting system any more secure? Twenty percent of the ballots are hand-counted, but 80% are optically scanned - a technology that has a long history of being highly vulnerable to election fraud, which is documented in various reports as well as in the book, VoteScam: The Stealing of Democracy. Recently some people have been asking if the 2004 New Hampshire primary was rigged. Martin Bento published online an interesting analysis of New Hampshire's election results based on the voting systems used.* It's been getting a lot of attention. According to Bento, Howard Dean lost to John Kerry by only 1.6% when the ballots were hand-counted, 9.7% when ESS optical scanners were used, and 14.7% on Diebold scanners. That doesn't look good. On the other hand, pre-election and exit polls do seem to match the election results. Of course, polling organizations can be as partisan as think tanks, so their accuracy should always be suspect. The exit poll for the major news networks was done by (Warren) Mitofsky International and Edison Media Research (on whose board Mitofsky, the "father" of exit polling, sits). It's really a reconstituted version of the highly secretive and controversial Voter News Service. Curiously, Mitofsky's exit polls do not disclose their over-all results. Everything is broken down into subcategories. The people at Edison told me to ask Kathy Levine of ABC's World News Tonight for that information. Levine told me that I could "buy it" from Edison "like the major networks did." As if I could afford it. Well, there always seems to be something fishy going on with the networks and their election polls, something that's also documented in VoteScam. Moving on. Others point out that geography was the real factor in how the New Hampshire vote count went down, that the more populated areas where optical scanners are more often used are closer to Massachusetts (Kerry Country). Whereas, the rural areas where hand-counts rule are nearer to Vermont (Dean Country). The problem with that analysis is that it's a 'guess' at best. The only way to really know for sure is to check the ballots. But, there seems to be little interest in doing that. "We don't audit our elections," says New Hampshire's Assistant Secretary of State Anthony Stevens. Frankly, I don't know a state that does, although it sounds like a good idea. Stevens contends that the numerous hand recounts that the state has conducted over the years for contested elections, serve as a deterrent to machine tampering and ensure that the machines work properly. But, Stevens admits that he wants to examine the exit polling data to see if there's anything to Bento's analysis. That begs the question, why not just check the ballots? Isn't that what they're there for? Reliance on questionable polling data is no substitute for examining the hard evidence of how people actually voted. State election officials say that they have never overturned an election due to a machine malfunction. But, that doesn't mean that it can't happen. And there are trillions of dollars at stake in this particular election. Although New Hampshire law does not provide for audits, "it doesn't prohibit them either," says Assistant Attorney General Bud Fitch. Considering the fact that a handful of corporations control the optical scanners and vote tabulation system in the state, one would think that election officials would be more vigilant and less trusting. Voters can't count on any certification process or pre-election testing to prevent vote

Over the past several months, Common Cause has monitored Halliburtons no-bid contract for reconstruction in Iraq, documented kickbacks to Halliburton personnel, and witnessed overcharging for gas imported from Kuwait. Common Cause supporters have petitioned Congress to increase its oversight of the reconstruction of Iraq and specifically the role played by Halliburton. We are now asking CEO David Lesar, to pledge to the American people that Halliburton will improve its stewardship of the $1.2 billion contract to rebuild Iraq. We are also asking that Halliburton close its offshore subsidiaries that allow it to skirt paying its fair share of taxes and to trade with nations under U.S. sanctions. Eye on Halliburton When Dick Cheney was CEO of Halliburton, the company enjoyed lucrative business relationships with countries under U.S. and international sanctions, including Iraq, Iran and Libya the first two later dubbed part of the Axis of Evil by President Bush. Iraq Halliburton was a key partner in building Iraqs oil industry during the reign of Saddam Hussein in the 1990s. After the Persian Gulf War in 1991, then-Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney helped devise the economic embargo against Iraq. Four years later, Cheney became CEO of Halliburton and promised to maintain a hard line against Baghdad. But in 1998, Halliburton acquired Dresser Industries, which was exporting equipment to Iraq through two subsidiary companies. Dresser continued to export to Iraq for nearly a year under Cheney, and former executives said they never heard any objections from Cheney or any other Halliburton official to trading with Baghdad. Libya In 1984 Halliburton began work in Libya on a maze of underground pipes named the Great Man-Made River Project, which Libya said was an irrigation system. When Congress imposed sanctions on Libya in the mid-1990s, Halliburton sidestepped the sanctions by transferring the work being done to its British office. In 1997, The New York Times reported that three engineers working on the project said Libyas official explanation for the tunnels was improbable. They noted that the size of the pipes and their proximity to Libyas borders made it more useful as a way to move troops underground and undetected by neighboring nations. Iran Halliburton began supplying oil equipment to Tehran in the mid-1990s despite continued sanctions against Iran. Halliburton, with Cheney as top executive, again evaded the sanctions by using a foreign subsidiary to conduct business with Iran. Give Me A Break! Feb 10, 2004 By Bruce Kennedy The New York Times reported yesterday that an anti-American operative in Iraq appealed for help from Al-Qaida leaders to help spark a sectarian war between Shiite and Sunni Muslims in an effort to drive the U.S. out of the country. The alleged plan is outlined in a 17-page memo that they claim U.S. forces confiscated from an Al-Qaida suspect in Iraq and of course is the strongest evidence to date of contacts between extremists in Iraq and al-Qaida. Give me a break. The paper said that American forces arrested a man who had the document on a computer disc (said to be a key Al-Qaida suspect of course) who was taking it to Afghanistan to get it to Al-Qaida's senior leadership. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian suspected of ties to al-Qaeda, was believed to be the author. Right. We should think back to the early days after 911 when Al-Qaida was supposed to be using sophisticated encryption techniques embedding messages in photographs send from public libraries. Now they just copy a document on disk and throw it in their briefcase? The alleged document goes on to say that the resistance against the U.S. occupation was struggling to recruit Iraqis and to combat American troops. Considering the resistance is on the rise, whether George Bush and the dutiful plotical media include it in his election pitch or not, rest assured Iraqis need no encouraging to oust their occupiers. Whats is even more absurd is the claim that the so-called Al-Qaida memo offers a kind of praise for U.S. forces, saying America, however, has no intention of leaving no matter how many wounded nor how bloody it becomes. Al-Qaida has never praised US forces for anything as its views them as imperialists and infidels. The total disregard for the intelligence of the American people, let alone the world community, that the Bush administration and its media cronies show is insulting. Now that it is common knowledge that there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq (not that many of us actually believed there were), Bush's latest position is that the war was justified because Saddam is a bad guy and Iraq is a hotbed of terrorism. The depths that this administration will sink to further its military madness leaves us only the hope that this idiot gets re-elected as there will be no one left who takes him seriously. Yahoo! [CTRL] Bush attacks American evildoers and madmen
-Caveat Lector- http://www.interventionmag.com/cms/modules.php?op=modloadname=Newsfile=articlesid=641 Bush attacks American "evildoers" and "madmen" who want to exercise their First Amendment rights. By Regis Sabol Once again John Ashcroft's Department of Injustice has taken bold steps to protect the freedom we Americans possess from what George Bush has often described as "evildoers" and "madmen." Last week, prosecutors in the United States attorney's office for the southern district of Iowa began handing out subpoenas to Drake University and participants in a forum at the university last November on how they could use acts of civil disobedience to best convey their opposition to the occupation of Iraq. Among the 21 participants in the forum were the executive director of the Catholic Peace Ministry at Drake and a 52-year-old file clerk. Both were arrested the day after the forum for "illegal trespass", along with ten others when they demonstrated outside the nearby Camp Dodge National Guard base. I've had a couple experiences with the Bush regime's efforts to protect America's freedoms. Twice in September, 2002, I was caged in "Free Speech Zones" established, under direct orders from the White House, to keep anti-war, anti-Bush demonstrators out of sight and out of mind of our Fearless Leader. Those who attempted to express their right to free speech by stepping even one foot outside the Free Speech zones were immediately arrested. Some things never change. In the latest attack in the "War on Terrorism," at least four participants in the conference have been subpoenaed to appear before a federal grand jury on Tuesday to explain just what they were doing by discussing the nonviolent philosophies of Mahatma Gandhi and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Nov. 15 anti-war forum sponsored by the Drake University chapter of the National Lawyers Guild. Lawyers for the Guild went to court Monday to block the demands of the federal prosecutors. Prosecutors stressed they were limiting the scope of their investigation to learning more about one person who they claim had tried to scale a security fence at the National Guard base during the following day's protest. Stephen Patrick O'Meara, the prosecutor, issued a written statement that claimed, "The United States attorney's office does not prosecute persons peacefully and lawfully engaged in rallies which are conducted under the protection of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States." O'Meara added, "The narrow purpose and scope of that inquiry has been narrowed to determine whether there were any violations of federal law, or prior agreements to violate federal law, regarding unlawful entry onto military property--and specifically to include whether there were any violations as a result of an alleged attempt to enter within the fenced, secure perimeter at Camp Dodge." I'm relieved that the Justice Department wants to protect our rights to freedom of speech and assembly as protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution by instituting a grand jury investigation to determine who that evildoer was who the federal prosector thinks might have tried to climb that chain-link fence at Camp Dodge. Lord only knows what that madman might have done to endanger our homeland security if he had made to the other side of that fence and into that National Guard base somewhere north of Des Moines. While O'Meara contends some dangerous miscreant attempted to scale the fence, no one at the rally recalled seeing anyone getting even a foot off the ground. Brian Terrell, executive director of the Des Moines Catholic Peace Ministry, who helped conduct "nonviolence training" at the forum, entitled, "Stop the Occupation! Bring the Iowa Guard Home!" got his subpoena last week. Terrell said he'd been involved in anti-government protests and sometimes was arrested over a number of years. Wendy Vasquez, who was also arrested outside the National Guard base, had also been subpoenaed. Coincidentally, Vasquez said that she too had been arrested in the past for such heinous crimes as protesting U.S. support for the war in El Salvador and advocating for homeless people. Terrell and Vasquez sound like a couple of danger hombres to me. In an insidious effort to disguise their nefarious schemes, organizers mailed a leaflet about the forum to a sergeant in the Des Moines police department and had at least one local television station filming the forum activities. "Everything we did was completely in the open," Terrell said. "We've been doing this sort of thing a long time. The police know the routine. We know them. Usually things here in Iowa are very friendly." Clever ploy. In its earnest attempt to narrow the narrow scope of the Justice Department's investigation, the U.S. attorney's office has also subpoenaed Drake University demanding detailed information on the Lawyers Guild and its members, including the names of those who are officers,

[CTRL] Don't blame the intelligence community, blame the Office of Special Plans
-Caveat Lector- http://www.onlinejournal.com/Commentary/021104Conover/021104conover.html Don't blame the intelligence community, blame the Office of Special Plans By Bev Conover Online Journal Editor Publisher February 11, 2004There is a term for the lack of critical thinking that has gripped Washington, the corporate media and the people who rely on the television networks for what passes for news. It is called post hoc fallacy. What post hoc fallacy means is that because A occurs before B, A is therefore the cause of B. For example, (A) Osama bin Laden has expressed anger over the first Gulf War and Saudi Arabia's involvement in it; (B) the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, therefore Osama must be guilty of perpetrating those attacks, even though no evidence has been provided to justify acceptance of the causal claim. Yet, the Bush administration, Congress and the corporate media have turned this into gospel. No need to look further: Osama did it. Another example, (A) Saddam Hussein is a brutal dictator who has weapons of mass destruction; (B) Iraq and Saddam must be destroyed before those WMD are used on us, never mind that UN weapons inspectors said there is no evidence of WMD to justify an illegal preemptive strike on a sovereign nation. Yet, Congress and the corporate media bought into the Iraq fallacies. Now both are hot to trot to buy into the Bush administration lie that the mess it has gotten us into in Iraq is the fault of the intelligence agencies, especially the CIA. This is not good governance and it is rotten journalism. Since George W. Bush admitted he doesn't read newspapers, but relies on his "trusted" advisers to tell him what he "needs to know," is it possible they never told him about the cabal of neocons who set up shop in the Pentagon, at the direction of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and with the blessing of Vice President Dick Cheney, to second guess what the CIA, FBI and other intelligence gathering agenciesforeign and domesticwere saying about the situation in Iraq, in order to cook up a case for an illegal war? It is called the Office of Special Plans (OSP) and is headed by Undersecretary for Defense Policy Douglas Feith. Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz, seized upon 9/11 to include war against Iraq in Bush's bogus "war on terror." And as much as the administration tried, and Bush is still trying, to link Saddam to al Qaeda, the intelligence agencies told it there was no there there. Also, as we now know from former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill's revelations, war against Iraq was on the agenda from practically the moment the Supreme Court installed Bush in the White House. Not to be deterred from their goal of seizing Iraq, both for its oil and the neocons long-term goal of US global dominance, Rumsfeld Co. set up the Office of Special Plans to cherry pick the facts in making the case for war. Following 9/11, Former House Speak Newt Gingrich suddenly became a Pentagon "consultant" and an unpaid member of the Pentagon's Defense Advisory Board. Gingrich and Cheney made a number of visits to the CIA in Langley, Virginia. Gingrich, according to the Guardian in a July 17, 2000, article, "sought to browbeat analysts into toughening up their assessments of Saddam's menace." "The president's most trusted adviser, Mr Cheney, was at the shadow network's sharp end. He made several trips to the CIA in Langley, Virginia, to demand a more 'forward-leaning' interpretation of the threat posed by Saddam. When he was not there to make his influence felt, his chief of staff, Lewis 'Scooter' Libby, was. Such hands-on involvement in the processing of intelligence data was unprecedented for a vice-president in recent times, and it put pressure on CIA officials to come up with the appropriate results," the Guardian reported in the same article. The Guardian further noted, "Democratic congressman David Obey, who is investigating the OSP, said: 'That office was charged with collecting, vetting and disseminating intelligence completely outside of the normal intelligence apparatus. In fact, it appears that information collected by this office was in some instances not even shared with established intelligence agencies and in numerous instances was passed on to the national security council and the president without having been vetted with anyone other than political appointees.' "The OSP was an open and largely unfiltered conduit to the White House not only for the Iraqi opposition. It also forged close ties to a parallel, ad hoc intelligence operation inside Ariel Sharon's office in Israel specifically to bypass Mossad and provide the Bush administration with more alarmist reports on Saddam's Iraq than Mossad was prepared to authorise. "'None of the Israelis who came were cleared into the Pentagon through normal channels,' said one source familiar with the visits. Instead, they were waved in on Mr Feith's authority without having to fill
[CTRL] Iraqi Sanctions and American Intentions: Blameless Carnage?
-Caveat Lector- ~~for educational purposes only~~ [Title 17 U.S.C. section 107] Iraqi Sanctions and American Intentions: Blameless Carnage? Part 1 by James Bovard, January 2004 (Posted February 9, 2004) President Bushs advisors assured Americans that U.S. troops would be greeted as liberators with flowers and hugs when the United States invaded Iraq. That promise turned out to be one of the biggest frauds of the Iraqi debacle. One major reason for the animosity to U.S. troops is the lingering impact and bitter memories of the UN sanctions imposed on the Iraqis for 13 years, largely at the behest of the U.S. government. It is impossible to understand the current situation in Iraq without examining the sanctions and their toll. President Bush, in the months before attacking Iraq, portrayed the sufferings and deprivation of the Iraqi people as resulting from the evil of Saddam Hussein. Bushs comments were intended as an antidote to the charge by Osama bin Laden a month after 9/11 that a million innocent children are dying at this time as we speak, killed in Iraq without any guilt. Bin Laden listed the economic sanctions against Iraq as one of the three main reasons for his holy war against the United States. Most Western experts believe that bin Laden sharply overstated the death toll. A United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) report in 1999 concluded that half a million Iraqi children had died in the previous eight years because of the sanctions. Columbia University professor Richard Garfield, an epidemiologist and an expert on the effects of sanctions, estimated in 2003 that the sanctions had resulted in infant and young-child fatalities numbering between 343,900 and 529,000. Regardless of the precise number of fatalities (which will never be known), the sanctions were a key factor in inflaming Arab anger against the United States. The sanctions were initially imposed to punish Iraq for invading Kuwait and then were kept in place after the Gulf War supposedly in order to pressure Saddam to disarm. Sanctions wreaked havoc on the Iraqi people, in part because the Pentagon intentionally destroyed Iraqs water-treatment systems during the first U.S.-Iraq war: A January 22, 1991, Defense Intelligence Agency report titled Iraq Water Treatment Vulnerabilities noted, Iraq depends on importing specialized equipment and some chemicals to purify its water supply, most of which is heavily mineralized and frequently brackish to saline Failing to secure supplies will result in a shortage of pure drinking water for much of the population. This could lead to increased incidences, if not epidemics, of disease Unless the water is purified with chlorine, epidemics of such diseases as cholera, hepatitis, and typhoid could occur. The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency estimated in early 1991 that it probably will take at least six months (to June 1991) before the [Iraqi water treatment] system is fully degraded from the bombing during the Gulf War and the UN sanctions. A May 1991 Pentagon analysis entitled Status of Disease at Refugee Camps, noted, Cholera and measles have emerged at refugee camps. Further infectious diseases will spread due to inadequate water treatment and poor sanitation. A June 1991 Pentagon analysis noted that infectious disease rates had increased since the Gulf War and warned, The Iraqi regime will continue to exploit disease incidence data for its own political purposes. George Washington University professor Thomas Nagy, who marshaled the preceding reports in an analysis in the September 2001 issue of The Progressive, concluded, The United States knew it had the capacity to devastate the water treatment system of Iraq. It knew what the consequences would be: increased outbreaks of disease and high rates of child mortality. And it was more concerned about the public relations nightmare for Washington than the actual nightmare that the sanctions created for innocent Iraqis. Pentagon intent A Washington Post analysis published on June 23, 1991, noted that Pentagon officials admitted that, rather than concentrating solely on military targets, the U.S. bombing campaign sought to achieve some of their military objectives in the Persian Gulf War by disabling Iraqi society at large and deliberately did great harm to Iraqs ability to support itself as an industrial society. The bombing campaign targeted Iraqs electrical power system, thereby destroying the countrys ability to operate its water-treatment plants. One Pentagon official who helped plan the bombing campaign observed, People say, You didnt recognize that it was going to have an effect on water or sewage. Well, what were we trying to do with sanctions help out the Iraqi people? No. What we were doing with the attacks on infrastructure was to accelerate the effect of the sanctions. Col. John Warden III, deputy director of strategy for the Air Force, observed,
[CTRL] ith a look at Yale University's Skull and Bones. Its members are some of the most influential people in America and are sworn to secrecy.
-Caveat Lector- CNN - Transcripts www.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0312/10/acd.00.html COOPER: Well, tonight we continue our series on secret societies. With a look at Yale University's Skull and Bones. Its members are some of the most influential people in America and are sworn to secrecy. Here's CNN's Adaora Udoji. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) ADAORA UDOJI, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The home of Skull and Bones coined the tomb looks like a windowless fortress. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: There are people who think they run the world and it's just a giant conspiracy. UDOJI: Consider the members, three American presidents, including George W. Bush and his father, senators and titans of every industry. Not one has spoken publicly since its founding in 1832. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If it's secret and it's elite, it can't be good. UDOJI: Rumors are fueled by movies like the "Skull" and stories the tomb contains daggers, coffins and the skull of Apache chief Geronimo. There are 15 juniors on this campus who come next April will be chosen or tapped as they say to join. And In what's been described as a bizarre ritual, they'll become members for life. GRAHAM BUETTCHER, SECRET SOCIETY EXPERT: People talk about how there is this sort of ritual rebirth where you are plunged naked into water and -- by some accounts mud and then you are kind of born again into the -- into the society. You emerge from the water a bonesman. UDOJI: Alexandra Robbins who interviewed more than 100 members writes many believe Skull and Bones has been running the United States for years. Retires Yale professor Gaddis Smith rejects conspiracy theories. PROF. GADDIS SMITH, RETIRED YALE HISTORY DEPT.: I think that's largely coincidence. Although it's probably not much different from Yale graduates in general who were high achievers. UDOJI: Only those knighted as it said, know for sure and they are not saying. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don't think anyone is home. UDOJI: Adaora Udoji. (END VIDEOTAPE) COOPER: Adaora didn't have the access number to the tomb. Well, journalist Alexandra Robbins who was just mentioned wrote the book, "Secrets of the Tomb: Skull and Bones, the Ivy League, and the Hidden Paths of Power." She joins us from Washington with more on the secret society at Yale. Alexandra, thanks for being with us tonight. What goes on inside that crypt? ALEXANDRA ROBBINS, AUTHOR, "SECRETS OF THE TOMB": Well, let's talk about the most prevalent of rumors, which is that members must lie naked in a coffin and masturbate while recounting their entire sexual histories. I'm going to say straight out, that's not true. But it does illustrate something that I found surprising, which is that a lot of the conspiracy theories we hear, even the more outrageous ones, are based on nuggets of truth. In April... COOPER: Basically people talk about -- there's a lot of just talking about their sexual history. ROBBINS: Yes. In April, members are initiated. In May they are whisked away to Skull and Bones private island, which is Deer Island about 350 miles from where you are in New York City. And about as soon as they come back, in September, for their regular Thursday and Sunday night meetings, they launch right into the activity called sexual history. And during the sexual history, each member must during an entire evening devoted to him or her, stand in an intimate dimly lit room in front of a painting of a woman and must recount their entire sexual history. And that's an activity supposed to take between 1 to 3 hours. Don't mean to offend you because I know you're a Yale man, but I went to Yale and I don't think Yalies have that much material. COOPER: I want to put on the screen what our current President George W. Bush who is probably now the most famous member of Skull and Bones had to say about it. He talked to "Time" Magazine. "Time" asked him, did you have any qualms say about joining an elite secret club like Bones? Bush, "No qualms at all. I was honored. I fairly nonchalant. I didn't view it as a great heritage thing. I didn't take it all that seriously." I guess he didn't take it to much seriously while he was at Yale. I guess he didn't do very well. You know, the conspiracy theorists say that this organization runs the world. That seems ridiculous. It seems like a glorified frat. ROBBINS: Oh, Skull and Bones is much more than a glorified frat. I guess you can take George W. Bush as an example. I don't think he took it as nonchalantly as he said. I mean, this is a guy who reportedly spent a weekend during his Skull and Bones year trying to get a tattoo of a skull and cross bones. George W. Bush has duly followed Skull and Bones agenda which is to get members into positions of power and then for those members to hire other members. And since he became president, he's appointed several members of his administration from Skull and Bones. Also, unlike fraternities, Skull and Bones, he has this weird
[CTRL] Time Could Be Running Out for the Endless War Brigade
-Caveat Lector- http://www.arabnews.com/?page=7section=0article=39311d=10m=2y=2004 Time Could Be Running Out for the Endless War Brigade Linda S. Heard, Special to Arab News CAIRO, 10 February 2004 Richard Perle, former chairman of the US Defense Policy Board, and George W. Bushs former speech writer David Frum co-authors of a book entitled An end to evil: How to win the war on terror outlined their right-wing extremist views on Boston Universitys WUBUR radio last Friday. Their message was loud and clear. US global dominance using military might when necessary is the only way forward. After subjecting myself to almost an hour of the Perle-Frum philosophy I quickly came to the conclusion labeling the Zionist ideologues hawks is an insult to a noble bird. And there is nothing conservative about them either whether neo or otherwise. Theyre simply good old-fashioned warmongers with friends in high places. Extremely high places! Perle was a founder of the neoconservative think tank Project for a New American Century (PNAC) along with Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, and Donald Rumsfeld all Bush administration head honchos. Its report entitled Rebuilding Americas Defenses: strategy, forces and resources for a new century advocated a greatly increased defense budget so the US could fight and win multiple, simultaneous major theater wars starting with Iraq. It was Perle who invited Rand Corporation analyst Laurent Murawiec to give a 24-slide presentation to the Defense Policy Board in July 2002; the last slide titled Grand strategy for the Middle East states: Iraq is the tactical pivot, Saudi Arabia the strategic pivot, Egypt the Prize. Both Perle and Frum are fellows of The American Enterprise Institute in company with Lynne V. Cheney and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich among others. This ultra right-wing organization received glowing praise from George Bush in a 2003 speech. The fact that Perle was kicked off his lofty perch under a cloud that he personally profited from the Iraq war, while Frum submitted his resignation when word got around he was responsible for the infantile Axis of Evil, hasnt deterred this deranged duo from pursuing their mutual agenda. On the contrary, they fear the Bush administrations resolve might be flagging when it comes to the war on terror. Their book seeks to be a shot in the arm but is more likely to represent one in the foot. In the Perle-Frum black-and-white world view, the US faces either victory over evil or holocaust. According to their manuscript, the road to victory entails forcing European nations to choose between Paris and Washington; special scrutiny of Muslims living in the US by law enforcement; the overthrow of the Iranian and the Syrian governments; a blockade of North Korea; rejection of the United Nations Charter and last, but certainly not least, the abandonment of any plan for a Palestinian state. In other words its a recipe for chronic worldwide anti-Americanism. When Frum was asked by the radio show host whether there was a middle path between victory and holocaust and whether American global domination would be victory, he answered: What does holocaust mean? There are tens of thousands of old nuclear warheads at large in the old Soviet Union. There are lots of nuclear technologies increasingly available. There may be the possibility of nuclear warheads or nuclear technology in North Korea. If Al-Qaeda got hold of these weapons what do you think they would do with them? Al-Qaeda on Sept. 11 killed more people in one day than the IRA killed over 30 years. There are terrorist organizations backed by powerful regimes in the Middle East... that is the holocaust we are worried out. Victory is the destruction of those organizations so that Western Europeans and Americans dont have to live with the thought is this the day a dirty bomb goes off in downtown Washington or is this the day they release the spores in New York... Said Perle on WBUR: The administration understands this war as a long-term and intensely ideological struggle against the successor, in a sense, to Nazism and Communism which is radical Islam; fringe to be sure but nevertheless powerful. Paula, who called into the show, said: I am glad that the Prince of Darkness Mr. Perle has come out and confirmed this administration concurs with his global outlook and ideology. Victory or holocaust? If you follow what these guys are saying weve got holocaust. The caller went on to suggest that Americas unqualified support for Israel may be one of the contributing factors to Sept. 11. Perles response was unequivocal: Sept. 11 was not caused by American foreign policy. This is complete nonsense, complete rubbish. And if that is the issue upon which you hope to remove the American administration, you are in for a huge shock. In reality Perle and his crusading cohorts may be the ones in for the shock. Since former ISG (Iraq Survey Group) head David Kay told a Senate Armed
