From Wall Street Journal July 16, 2004:
MONTE RIO, Calif. ... Members are instructed not to talk about what goes on here

Bob Weir, the former Grateful Dead rhythm guitarist, has become a Bohemian member and has played at Grove events the past six years. Joining him onstage at times is Steve Miller, the rocker known for such 1970s hits as "Jungle Love" and "The Joker."
[...]
Over time, the Grove became best known as a private retreat for a different breed of Bohemians: powerful politicians and executives. Members since World War II have included Dwight Eisenhower, David Rockefeller and scions of the Bechtel construction family...

The "Midsummer Encampment" last year included a talk on the evolution of classic jazz, a magic show, an organ concert, an evening salute to Burt Bacharach, an afternoon of quintet for clarinet and strings, a slide show about Gens. Grant and Lee, skeet shooting, a lecture by Clint Bolick about vouchers, a talk about horse racing by jockey Chris McCarron, a talk by George Shultz titled "A Changed World," talks by Charlie Rose and William Safire...

Protesters in the 1970s began targeting the Grove as a supposed clustering point of the ruling class. Grove officials responded with guards and, later, barbed-wire fences.
[...]
Miller and Weir declined to discuss their musical ties to the Bohemian Grove, citing the club's privacy rules.
[...]
In 2001, [Alabama businessman Ted] Hooks recalls, he wandered over to a clearing in the woods one evening to hear an impromptu performance by several Grateful Dead alumni...

I was able to find a Pratt and Whitney jet engine spokesman
who gave his opinion that this photo
 http://www.sitbot.net/im/pentagon_plane_part.jpg
is that of a jet engine compressor part(though the engines on
the Pentagon plane were Rolls-Royce, not P&W, that seemed to be
a fairly authoritative answer about a generic type of turbofan part).

Jean-Pierre Desmoulins has found other distinctive Rolls-Royce parts in
Pentagon crash photos. Some Boeing 757's have P&W engines but American
Airlines 757's have Rolls-Royce engines. Look at this site if you would
like to
be reassured that a real plane crashed into the Pentagon 9/11/2001.
Desmoulins
has found many eyewitness accounts which confirm with what my two on site
witnesses said consistent with explosions in addition to the initial
plane crash.
That sounds like script fulfilment which we also saw at WTC911 and
OKCbomb.

[CTRL] Operation Summer Pulse '04 Could Spark War

2004-07-16 Thread William Shannon
Sailing Toward a Storm in China

U.S. maneuvers could spark a war.

By Chalmers Johnson

July 15, 2004 "Los Angeles Times" -- Quietly and with minimal coverage in the U.S. press, the Navy announced that from mid-July through August it would hold exercises dubbed Operation Summer Pulse '04 in waters off the China coast near Taiwan.Â

This will be the first time in U.S. naval history that seven of our 12 carrier strike groups deploy in one place at the same time. It will look like the peacetime equivalent of the Normandy landings and may well end in a disaster.Â

At a minimum, a single carrier strike group includes the aircraft carrier itself (usually with nine or 10 squadrons and a total of about 85 aircraft), a guided missile cruiser, two guided missile destroyers, an attack submarine and a combination ammunition, oiler and supply ship.

Normally, the United States uses only one or at the most two carrier strike groups to show the flag in a trouble spot. In a combat situation it might deploy three or four, as it did for both wars with Iraq. Seven in one place is unheard of.Â

Operation Summer Pulse '04 was almost surely dreamed up at the Pearl Harbor headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Command and its commander, Adm. Thomas B. Fargo, and endorsed by neocons in the Pentagon. It is doubtful that Congress was consulted. This only goes to show that our foreign policy is increasingly made by the Pentagon.

According to Chinese reports, Taiwanese ships will join the seven carriers being assembled in this modern rerun of 19th century gunboat diplomacy. The ostensible reason given by the Navy for this exercise is to demonstrate the ability to concentrate massive forces in an emergency, but the focus on China in a U.S. election year sounds like a last hurrah of the neocons.Â

Needless to say, the Chinese are not amused. They say that their naval and air forces, plus their land-based rockets, are capable of taking on one or two carrier strike groups but that combat with seven would overwhelm them. So even before a carrier reaches the Taiwan Strait, Beijing has announced it will embark on a crash project that will enable it to meet and defeat seven U.S. carrier strike groups within a decade. There's every chance the Chinese will succeed if they are not overtaken by war first.Â

China is easily the fastest-growing big economy in the world, with a growth rate of 9.1% last year. On June 28, the BBC reported that China had passed the U.S. as the world's biggest recipient of foreign direct investment. China attracted $53 billion worth of new factories in 2003, whereas the U.S. took in only $40 billion; India, $4 billion; and Russia, a measly $1 billion.Â

If left alone by U.S. militarists, China will almost surely, over time, become a democracy on the same pattern as that of South Korea and Taiwan (both of which had U.S.-sponsored military dictatorships until the late 1980s). But a strong mainland makes the anti-China lobby in the United States very nervous. It won't give up its decades-old animosity toward Beijing and jumps at any opportunity to stir up trouble â "defending Taiwan" is just a convenient cover story.

These ideologues appear to be trying to precipitate a confrontation with China while they still have the chance. Today, they happen to have rabidly anti-Chinese governments in Taipei and Tokyo as allies, but these governments don't have the popular support of their own citizens.Â

If American militarists are successful in sparking a war, the results are all too predictable: We will halt China's march away from communism and militarize its leadership, bankrupt ourselves, split Japan over whether to renew aggression against China and lose the war. We also will earn the lasting enmity of the most populous nation on Earth.

Chalmers Johnson's latest book is "The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic" (Metropolitan, 2004).

Seymour Hersh, who reported on the torture of the prisoners in New Yorker magazine in May, told an audience in San Francisco that "it's worse". But he added that he would reveal the extent of the abuses: "I'm not done reporting on all this," he told a meeting of the American Civil Liberties Union.  He said: "The boys were sodomised with the cameras rolling, and the worst part is the soundtrack, of the boys shrieking. Describes rituals and crimes - Alarm in Italy as growth of Satanism creates "market" for consecrated hosts Rome, Italy, 7/15/04 "Fr. Aldo Buonaiuto, director of an "emergency help line" that assists young people wanting to get out of satanic cults, expressed alarm this week at the growth of Satanism, which has created a "market" for consecrated hosts in Italy. In statements published in the Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana, Fr. Buonaiuto explained that "a proliferation of cults exists which practice black masses, with the profanation of consecrated hosts, rape and torture." "We know of cases of consensual vampirism, and also the assaulting of young people who have been drugged in the course of ritualistic orgies." "Some cults perform rituals with the consecrated hosts while under the influence of LSD or cocaine, led frequently by ex-priests who have offered themselves in the service of Satan," he told Famiglia Cristiana." http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=1554

Priests want right to drink and drive July 13, 2004 "Croatian priests are calling for their exemption from a bill banning drivers from drinking before getting behind the wheel, since they have to imbibe wine while on the job, a local paper has reported. "Police should be instructed not to treat priests like other drivers. In a certain way they should be exempted from the law" banning alcohol while driving, Catholic priest Zivko Kustic told the Jutarnji List daily. The government recently forwarded to the parliament a draft law on road security, which abolishes the current threshold of blood-alcohol content of 0.05 percent and sets strong fines for those caught driving while under the influence.  Priests often serve three masses in one day, during which as part of communion they have to drink some wine in three different villages. They simply can not handle that without a car, Kustic said." http://news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,10124351%5E13762,00.html

The Corporation: A Film Review

By Chris Parry Posted 10/07/03 04:26:25

"The single most important documentary of modern times."
(Awesome) A lot of documentaries get a rise out of their
audience. Some even invoke social change, or at the
least some serious reflection upon our place in the
world. But I can safely say I've never seen an audience
so moved, en masse, to explore actual social activism on
a grand scale as the audience who watched this three
hour masterwork. The first standing ovation I've seen
delivered at the Vancouver Film Festival was not only
deserved, but also very long, and what followed the
screening overshadowed even that outpouring of emotion.

The Corporation could never have been made in the USA.
It took a Canadian team to put this work together, and
it'll take far more than legal threats and intimidation
to kill it. An almost three hour look at the past,
present and future of corporations as a business entity,
you'd be forgiven for rolling your eyes and giving the
thing a miss if you only had a loose synopsis to go on.

But where this documentary matters is in the details -
the nasty, disgusting, gory details of what the
corporation has done to this world, what it's doing
today, and what we can expect it to do tomorrow if we
don't get our freaking act together.

The extreme right 'love it or leave it' crowd are no
doubt already starting to yell "Lefty propaganda," but
this isn't an Anti-Bush attack on all things capitalist.
This isn't hippy rhetoric or new age spin or a call to
the communes. It isn't hoity toity technospeak or boring
talking-head PBS filler. What The Corporation is, is a
healthy dose of well-researched, deeply explored,
stunning information that can not possibly leave you, as
an audience member, in any condition but stunned,
dismayed, and outraged.

Maybe you know it all already. If you're like me, you
read the papers, you know who's buying who and that the
unstoppable bulldozer of globalization is hurting a lot
of people. If you're like me, you're disgusted that TV
news has become a wrestling match to decide which party
has the best 'spin', and you might have even learned
enough about global politics to be sick to death of what
you're seeing in the world today.

But The Corporation will teach you things you never
dreamed of. it will change you. It will ruin your day,
but give you reason to get up in the morning -
determined to make change.

Imagine, if you will, that France had started injecting
their cows with a chemical hormone agent that increased
milk productivity, but had side effects that would cause
massive damage and pain to the cows, and would then be
passed into the milk in large quantities. Imagine that
the UK and Canada had banned that chemical from use
because it is absorbed by the human body and has a real
danger of causing cancer and other health issues in
humans. And imagine that France had approved it anyway,
after testing it on only 30 rats.

Got that? Now imagine that a French investigative
journalist had found proof of all this but had a big
news report quashed by his network because it might harm
advertising revenue from the chemical company.

And imagine that the journalist had documented proof
that his network had tried to alter his story to tell
lies about the chemical for their advertisers, and that
the journalist had been offered hundreds of thousands of
dollars to keep quiet about it and just "go away."

Would you be outraged? Would you be disgusted that the
French could poison their children and that their media
would cover it up? How outraged would you be if that
French milk ended up in YOUR child's school?

Well, get ready to be outraged, b

[CTRL] All the Nations Against Jerusalem[N.L. Fast of Av Special]

2004-07-16 Thread General Bates
-Caveat Lector-

B”H

27 Tammuz, 5764. Erev Shabbas. N.L. Fast of Av Special. Fast and Lament!

Hello. It is good to be with each and every single one of you on this lovely Friday
afternoon. This Fast of Av Special will conclude the Jerusalem Series. I plan to
suspend the NLA List until after the Fast of Av. The General Bates Intelligence
Update List may continue, if I am so inspired, but most of you do not ordinarily
receive that. I will discuss the issue of the prophesied gathering of all the Nations
against Jerusalem, including the secular Jews who oppose Torah. This is a perfect
subject for the Fast of Av.

Those of us who have studied the world scene have seen that things are never simple.
For instance, Enron went under, and Mr. Ken Lay was highly connected to key
Republicans and Democrats. Suddenly, Martha Stewart, an opponent of the
Administration, is indicted and convicted of a crime that is ill defined and
essentially un-Constitutional. Then, a key witness, a Secret Service Agent, is caught
lying. Needless to say, her conviction is not overturned. Attention is not singly
focused on Enron, but is divided among a series of stories dealing with corporate
crime. Just a coincidence, of course.

Indeed, those of you who are “old-timers” on the Noachide Liberation Army List know
that I try to approach current events from a Torah perspective. I believe that there
is no political realm that is separate from Torah. This may be upsetting to many
people, but I believe that the Torah is sufficient for Israel and for the Nations to
govern their affairs. Obviously, I do not believe in a “Moses” to lead every Nation
because Moses was the greatest of the Prophets. Hence, a religious dictatorship
cannot be truly righteous at this time. Rather, I believe that Torah should inform
Israel, that the Sabbath should be enforced in the Holy Land, that Christian and
Moslem inhabitants of the Land should either accept the existence of the Jewish State
or be expelled, and that the Noahide Laws should inform America in a parallel sense.
This must be done within the context of elected government, not a dictatorship, but an
elected government in which the people govern themselves according to the right
principles.

I also know that this is not how our American Government was set up, being pluralist
in nature, and that there is no means by which to establish it except through
Constitutional Amendment. Madison, not Moses, established our System. The “Republic”
was a mixture of Monarchy, Aristocracy, and Democracy, all Gentile political Systems
at odds with Torah. Of course, the modern System is a perversion, a degeneration, of
Madison. The System can use “freedom” as mechanism of justification. Corporations
are “free” to export jobs to foreign countries. Halliburton was “free” to trade with
anti-American dictatorships. (1) The System works because we are “free” to be hired
or fired without any democratic input from workers. Anything else would be
“socialism”. Of course, if one thinks the System works, ask someone who isn’t!

Needless to say, the System is now largely a One Party system. The Democrats are out
of step with the Majority in the sense that the Majority believes in the Ten
Commandments. Few understand them, but most understand that they are necessary to
civilization. Hence, the Corporations who have always favored the Republicans can
over-ride Democracy and use Religion in order to do so, made possible by the
horrendous disdain that the Democrats have for the Judeo-Christian foundation that
made this Nation great. In essence, we have a Third World dictatorship in the making,
one in which a righteous people are ruled by false religious despots. The opposition
cannot appeal to the people because it is unrighteous.

I expect that the Republicans will shed the religious Right to be acceptable to social
moderates, and that elements supportive of the Democrats will be brought on board.
This will include opponents of Israel. Colin Powell will have more power under a
Republican Administration. Or, conversely, a Kerry Administration, if it is elected,
would have to operate within a Republican context. (2) The Republicans would shed
their opposition to abortion and homosexual marriage, and we will have a truly One
Party State that will appease the Muslims as well as the socialists who hate Israel,
and turn against Jewish “intransigents” who refuse to leave Judea and Samaria.

We see the revival of anti-Semitism from the Left. It is found in pro-choice,
pro-gay, and antiG-d websites that repeat the Protocols of the Elders of PNAC
propaganda. It is found among Libertarians. It is found among Preterists and other
factions of the Christian Right. It is certainly found among the Muslim Right. It is
found among hard-core Communists in Russia. However, ominously, we are seeing it in
countries with no history of it, such as New Zealand, India,

Former CIA director
used Pentagon ties to introduce Iraqi defectorBy Jonathan S.
Landay and Warren P. StrobelKnight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - A former CIA director who advocated war against
Saddam Hussein helped arrange the debriefing of an Iraqi defector
who falsely claimed that Iraq had biological-warfare laboratories
disguised as yogurt and milk trucks.

R. James Woolsey's role as a go-between was detailed in a
classified Defense Department report chronicling how the defector's
assertion came to be included in the Bush administration's case for
war even after the defector was determined to be a fabricator.

A senior U.S. official summarized portions of the report for
Knight Ridder on condition of anonymity because it's top secret. The
report said that on Feb. 11, 2002, Woolsey telephoned Deputy
Assistant Defense Secretary Linton Wells about the defector and told
him how to contact the man, who'd been produced by an Iraqi exile
group eager to oust Saddam. Wells said he passed the information to
the Defense Intelligence Agency.

_(CFR Member )Woolsey's previously undisclosed role in
the case of Maj. Mohammad Harith casts new light on how prominent
invasion advocates outside the government used their ties to senior
officials in the Bush administration to help make the case for war.

There's no indication that Woolsey was aware that Harith's
information was unreliable. (Oh?) Reconcile that with the
statement below about distrusting the exile group while Woolsey was
DCI.

By using his Pentagon contacts, Woolsey provided a direct
pipeline to the government for Harith's information that bypassed
the CIA, which for years had been highly
distrustful of the exile group that produced Harith.

The Senate Intelligence Committee didn't address that issue last
week in its 511-page report on Iraq intelligence.

The report largely blamed the CIA for hyping and misreading
intelligence that buttressed President Bush's charges that Saddam
had devastating weapons that he could use against the United States
or give to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist network.

Francis Brooke, Washington representative of the Iraqi National
Congress, the exile group that produced Harith and other defectors,
said intermediaries such as Woolsey and former
Pentagon official Richard Perle (CFR),
another leading war advocate, contacted the Bush administration
multiple times on the INC's behalf.

Such referrals were an efficient way to get potentially crucial
intelligence to the government, Brooke said. He stressed that the
INC made no claims about the defectors' veracity and it was up to
U.S. officials to decide whether to use their information.

The Senate Intelligence Committee assessed the Harith case and
found that intelligence analysts thought his claim was crucial in
appearing to corroborate allegations by another defector, code-named
Curve Ball, the main source of claims that Iraq had developed mobile
biological-weapons facilities to deceive U.N. weapons inspectors.

The allegation was one of the most dramatic made by Bush, Vice
President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell and other
senior administration officials.

The Senate committee's report said Harith, whom it identified
only as an "INC source," was brought to the DIA's attention "by
Washington-based representatives of the INC in February 2002."

After several meetings, a DIA debriefer concluded that some of
Harith's information "seemed accurate, but much of it appeared
embellished" and he apparently "had been coached on what information

So how about a super-computer at the peak of the pyramid below? We will
call it R4P and run it for the presidency in year ?

Subject: [FUTURE-CITIES] Goddard Rocket Sled for Nevada Future City

Could you please tell us how X-Planes were able to go 4,500 mph without
pilots blacking out from g forces?

Could a rocket sled like the one at Holoman, N. Mex. be eventually
developed to transport people across Earth and Moon?

The answer is obviously yes. The Thust SCC did 763 mph at Black Rock
Desert, Nevada in 1997 ... the first car to break the sound barrier.
So a rocket sled could do at least that, perhaps using a mag-lev track.

How about Nevada Future City? Right in the middle of the
Reno-Vegas-Wendover triangle? A mega-resort complex built around a
one-mile high Luxor-like structure with rocket sleds out to the cities of
Nevada. The rocket-sleds will run right up the sides of the pyramid to its
mile high peak.

I have to wonder about that "g force" thing as well. The X-Planes we were
told, reached altitudes of >60 miles and speeds of 4,500 mph and they were
MANNED. Can anyone explain why X-Plane pilots did not black out?

Anyhow, Moonshine City would have a vacuum all around it so rocket sleds
would work well for commuting from Moonshine City to the stills which
produce the good stuff, way out in the hills.

July 16, 2004

Rush Limbaugh

P.O. Box 420058

Palm Coast, FL 32142-0058

Mr. Limbaugh:

On July 13th, you welcomed William F. Buckley, Jr. to your radio
show. According to the transcript of this particular program posted on your
web site, Mr. Buckley congratulated himself and his magazine for ridding
"the conservative movement" of "kooks" among whom he claimed were
"anti-Semites."

You immediately followed his self-adulatory remark with, "I
think you cited the John Birch Society."

Mr. Buckley promptly acknowledged that indeed he did, stating,
"Yeah, for five years there was the John Birch Society." We find his
suggestion that we existed for only "five years" quite remarkable in light
of the fact that he has expended such an unusual amount of energy during the
past 40 years seeking to destroy our organization. He knows, as do you, that
The John Birch Society has been continuously informing the public since its
founding in 1958, far more years than the "five" he grudgingly noted.

However, having been given the opportunity by you of linking our
organization with odious anti-Semitism, Mr. Buckley performed as if on cue.
After mentioning our Society by name, he recalled his long ago finding of a
need for "rejecting certain other things" among which he included "the kind
of racial animosity that culminated in Germany." Ergo, The John Birch
Society should be identified with the Nazis who hated, persecuted and
murdered countless numbers of Jews because they were Jews.

Mr. Buckley knows better. And, from your own association with
our organization years ago, you do also. Any charge or any inference that
The John Birch Society has ever stood for hatred of anyone, Jews included,
is totally false and no one can demonstrate otherwise. You and your hero
owe an apology to us and our tens of thousands of members, a goodly number
of whom are Jewish.

In the interview, you saluted your guest as "the go-to guy for
the definitions, the explanations of modern conservatism." You are
absolutely correct, but your emphasis should be on the word "modern." Mr.
Buckley took the Old Right conservatism of his father and many other fine
Americans and transformed it into a movement that ignored the U.S.
Constitution while favoring an array of positions championed by the
socialists and internationalists of the liberal Establishment. His "modern"
conservatism has included support for the Panama Canal giveaway, the United
Nations, the Brady gun control bill, foreign aid, pornography, NAFTA,
legalized prostitution, GATT, membership in the Council on Foreign
Relations, even abortion. That last departure from true conservatism,
occurring as it did seven years before Roe v. Wade, cost him the friendship
of his once-closest ally, L. Brent Bozell.

Further, he couldn't recall the name of the man who recruited
him into the CIA. Allow me to help. His name was Willmoore Kendall, the
OSS/CIA veteran who not only directed him to the CIA but also became one of
the founding members of the National Review staff. It was while Mr. Buckley
served in the CIA in Mexico during 1952 that he wrote the article for
Commonweal magazine in which he called for "a totalitarian bureaucracy
within our shores [and] centralization of power in Washington." This is
hardly conservatism of any variety. And it was Kendall and James Burnham,
each early Trotskyite socialists, who began to pave the way to friendship
for the magazine and for Mr. Buckley with the more recent and unmistakable
advocates of socialism and internationalism who are the leading
neoconservatives.

All of this and more can be found in my 2002 book, William F. Buckley, Jr.,
Pied Piper for the Establishment, published by The John Birch Society. It
was quite amusing to find Mr. Buckley acknowledging its existence in a

July 7, 2004

For publication by FrontPageMag.com

From: John F. McManus, Council Member and Official Spokesman, The John
Birch Society

Your "Farewell, Chairman Bill" tribute to William F. Buckley,
Jr. missed the main accomplishment of this man. He indeed became the
spokesman for "conservatism," but he took it farther and farther to the left
during the past half century. And that is why he became such a darling of
the nation's liberals.

When he launched his magazine, no conservative would have supported the
giveaway of the Panama Canal, compulsory national service, abortion, gun
control, pornography, NAFTA, GATT, legalized prostitution, and so much more.
But he eventually stated his approval of each of those positions and many
more. Sad to say, he took many Americans along with him.

What many seem to forget is that the standard for Americans
isn't a shifting, Buckley-defined "conservatism." It is the U.S.
Constitution, not a "respectable" form of conservatism that surely was
respected by liberals and internationalists. The only occasions that found
him mentioning the Constitution happened to be those when he was calling for
a constitutional convention which, if one were held, would surely have seen
the venerable document rewritten, even destroyed.

You described him as a "devout Catholic" without knowing, it
would appear, that he called for the Catholic Church to "reconsider its
position" on abortion as far back as 1966. That deviation from Catholicism
led his brother-in-law and once closest friend, L. Brent Bozell, to denounce
him in public. Bozell's wife Patricia joined in the denunciation. His book
Nearer My God, supposedly his "autobiography of faith," never bared his own
beliefs, only those of several others. And his many novels laced with sex
came as little surprise after he wrote articles for the pornography-laden
Playboy and Penthouse magazines. "Devout" Catholic? Hardly.

Yes, he founded and led the Young Americans for Freedom, a
much-needed youth organization. But when his pronounced turn to the left
could no longer be stomached by even his youthful followers, the YAF
conventioneers meeting in 1977 issued their own rebuke to their once-revered
leader. They blasted him for having joined the Council on Foreign Relations,
refusing to call for the U.S. to quit the United Nations, defending Henry
Kissinger, calling for legalization of marijuana, and more.

Buckley not only befriended the socialists and Big Government
champions of the neoconservative movement, he actually advocated their
causes as far back as 1952. While serving the CIA in "deep cover" (his
description), he wrote an article for the January 25, 1952 issue of
Commonweal magazine calling for "a totalitarian bureaucracy within our
shores [and] the centralization of power in Washington." That he would
then turn to CIA veterans James Burnham and Willmoore Kendall for their
assistance in launching National Review should not be overlooked.

It should be no surprise that Buckley claimed as one of his most
important achievements his expelling The John Birch Society from the
conservative movement. Our organization didn't have to be expelled from what
Buckley was leading; we wanted nothing to do with his style of
"conservatism." For those truly interested in gaining a factual insight
into the career of this great deceiver, I offer my thoroughly documented
book, William F. Buckley, Jr.: Pied Piper for the Establishment. Buckley
himself acknowledged its existence saying that the only criticism we made of
him was his membership in the Council on Foreign Relations. That is
patently false, and so is any portrayal of this man as an ideal American.

Re: [CTRL] Very real threat

2004-07-16 Thread Eric Hoffsten
-Caveat Lector-
A few points regarding this hideously misguided letter from what is
clearly a spectacularly uncritical thinker:
On Jul 16, 2004, at 6:04 AM, Ed Raymond wrote (quoting an anonymous
letter):
Our country is now facing the most serious threat to its existence, as
we
know it, that we have faced in your lifetime and mine (which includes
WWII).
The deadly seriousness is greatly compounded by the fact that there
are very
few of us who think we can possibly lose this war and even fewer who
realize
what losing really means.
Actually, the case can be made that there are *twin* threats far
greater to America's existence: increasing environmental devastation
(i.e., we're physically destroying our country) and increasing economic
disparity (i.e., we're turning into a postmodern feudalist society).
First, let's examine a few basics:
1. When did the threat to us start?
Many will say September 11th, 2001. The answer as far as the United
States
is concerned is 1979, 22 years prior to September 2001, with the
following
attacks on us: Iran Embassy Hostages, 1979; Beirut, Lebanon Embassy
1983;
Beirut, Lebanon Marine Barracks 1983; Lockerbie, Scotland Pan-Am
flight to
New York 1988;  First New York World Trade Center attack 1993;
Dhahran,
Saudi Arabia Khobar Towers Military complex 1996; Nairobi, Kenya US
Embassy
1998; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania US Embassy 1998; Aden, Yemen USS Cole
2000;
New York World Trade Center 2001; Pentagon 2001. (Note that during the
period from 1981 to 2001 there were 7,581 terrorist attacks
worldwide). [3]
America has waged wars of aggression and enacted aggressive, arrogant
foreign policy throughout its history; the threat (or, rather, growing
animosity toward America) started long before 1979.
2. Why were we attacked?
Envy of our position, our success, and our freedoms. The attacks
happened
during the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush 1,
Clinton and
Bush 2.
This is a dangerously simplistic explanation, and simply a parroting of
the dumbed-down sound-bite version offered up by the neocon
administration. We were attacked (have been attacked, and will
continue to be attacked) because of a number of overdetermined reasons,
among which are our imperialistic foreign policy, fealty to Israel's
inhumane agenda, our militaristic occupation of much of the globe, and
our lack of respect for other nations and ways of life.
We cannot fault either the Republicans or Democrats as there were no
provocations by any of the presidents or their immediate predecessors,
Presidents Ford or Carter.
We can very easily fault both parties, as America's foreign policy has
for at least the past century been embodied by many of the points
marked above, and no president has been beyond reproach.
4. 5. 6. 7. [snip]
Simplistic, but no major arguments here.
So with that background, now to the two major questions:
1. Can we lose this war?
What "war"? Iraq (which had nothing to do with terrorism)? Yes, we
will "lose" that "war," just as we lost Viet Nam. The so-called "War
on Terror"? Given the nature of the conflict, there is by definition
no way to win.
2. What does losing really mean?
It means continuing with the Bush administration's policies, which took
their blueprint from the positions of Project for the New American
Century and the American Enterprise Institute.
[snip] What losing really means is:
We would no longer be the premier country in the world. The attacks
will not
subside, but rather will steadily increase.
And everything this current administration does seems to be calculated
to bring about that end.
Remember, they want us dead, not just quiet. If they had just wanted
us
quiet, they would not have produced an increasing series of attacks
against
us over the past 18 years. The plan is clearly to terrorist attack us
until
we are neutered and submissive to them.
We will of course have no future support from other nations for fear of
reprisals and for the reason that they will see we are impotent and
cannot
help them.
Other nations are unwilling to help us because our actions are morally
reprehensible, *not* for fear of reprisals. It is unconscionable to
attack an unarmed sovereign nation without provocation, depose its
leader, occupy its people (then torture them), and loot its resources.
We had the world with us after 9/11; after invading Iraq, they've all
turned their backs.
They will pick off the other non-Muslim nations, one at a time. It
will be
increasingly easier for them. They already hold Spain hostage. It
doesn't
matter whether it was right or wrong for Spain to withdraw its troops
from
Iraq. Spain did it because the Muslim terrorists bombed their train
and told
them to withdraw the troops. Anything else they want Spain to do, will
be
done. Spain is finished.
Spain came to its senses, and withdrew its troops because 98% of its
citizens were against Bush's war on Iraq to begin with. Rather than
being finished, Spain is reborn.
The next will probably be France. Our o

Bumiller, "Hear the Rumor on Cheney? Capital Buzzes, Denials
Aside," the cable news networks spent the day abuzz over the
possibility Cheney might be dumped, though everyone acknowledged
that will not occur, and in the evening the CBS Evening News and
NBC Nightly News dedicated significant time to the rumor with NBC
devoting more than three minutes to it, an eternity in TV Newscast
time. Of the broadcast networks, only ABC's World News Tonight
exercised rationale news judgment and ignored the Times' rumor-
mongering. CBS's Bill Plante inadvertently conceded that CBS was
aiding the Democratic cause as he noted that Democrats are "happy
to make mischief by keeping the rumor alive."

2) Ted Turner, as out there as ever. Appearing from Aspen on CNN's
Wolf Blitzer Reports on Thursday afternoon, the founder of CNN
reaffirmed his view that women should replace men in public office
since "I think if women ran the world for one hundred years, we'd
see more money going into education and health care and homes for
the homeless, and so forth, and less into the military, and I
think we'd be a safer and better world with women in charge for a
while." He also repeated his opposition to the Iraq war, insisting
that "the world is less safe and more of a mess today than it was
before we started dropping the bomb," and made clear he'll be
voting for John Kerry.

3) Katie Couric turned completely personal and soft for part three
of her interview with John and Elizabeth Edwards aired on
Thursday's Today. Couric highlighted how their "romantic ritual"
to celebrate their anniversary is to go to Wendy's. Couric
giggled: "What do you say, 'One Frosty, two straws?'" Couric
empathized with taking care of kids while campaigning and wondered
if being in "the national spotlight" is "a bit overwhelming?"
Couric reminded Mrs. Edwards of her husband's sexiness: "Let me
ask you when your husband was voted Sexiest Politician by People
magazine were you like blech? Or were you like, 'Hey! That's my
man!?'"

4) Five days after the Washington Post revealed how the Senate
report released last Friday had undermined Joseph Wilson's claims
about how his wife, a CIA operative, had nothing to do with the
decision to send him to Niger to check claims that Iraq had sought
to purchase uranium and that the report determined that what he
found actually backed up the statement made by President Bush in
his State of the Union address about Iraq's quest, NBC Nightly
News on Thursday became the first broadcast network to give air
time, in a story by Andrea Mitchell, to the undermining of
Wilson's anti-Bush crusade which so animated the media for the
past year. Friday's Today, however, didn't air Mitchell's story
even though the program in May twice interviewed Wilson. NBC
anchor Brian Williams framed the story only around how Wilson is

Allawi shot inmates in cold blood, say witnesses
By Paul McGeough, Chief Herald Correspondent, in Baghdad
July 17, 2004

Iyad Allawi, the new Prime Minister of Iraq, pulled a pistol and executed as many as six suspected insurgents at a Baghdad police station, just days before Washington handed control of the country to his interim government, according to two people who allege they witnessed the killings.

They say the prisoners - handcuffed and blindfolded - were lined up against a wall in a courtyard adjacent to the maximum-security cell block in which they were held at the Al-Amariyah security centre, in the city's south-western suburbs.

They say Dr Allawi told onlookers the victims had each killed as many as 50 Iraqis and they "deserved worse than death".

The Prime Minister's office has denied the entirety of the witness accounts in a written statement to the Herald, saying Dr Allawi had never visited the centre and he did not carry a gun.

But the informants told the Herald that Dr Allawi shot each young man in the head as about a dozen Iraqi policemen and four Americans from the Prime Minister's personal security team watched in stunned silence.

Iraq's Interior Minister, Falah al-Naqib, is said to have looked on and congratulated him when the job was done. Mr al-Naqib's office has issued a verbal denial.

The names of three of the alleged victims have been obtained by the Herald.

One of the witnesses claimed that before killing the prisoners Dr Allawi had told those around him that he wanted to send a clear message to the police on how to deal with insurgents.

"The prisoners were against the wall and we were standing in the courtyard when the Interior Minister said that he would like to kill them all on the spot. Allawi said that they deserved worse than death - but then he pulled the pistol from his belt and started shooting them."

Re-enacting the killings, one witness stood three to four metres in front of a wall and swung his outstretched arm in an even arc, left to right, jerking his wrist to mimic the recoil as each bullet was fired. Then he raised a hand to his brow, saying: "He was very close. Each was shot in the head."

The witnesses said seven prisoners had been brought out to the courtyard, but the last man in the line was only wounded - in the neck, said one witness; in the chest, said the other.

Given Dr Allawi's role as the leader of the US experiment in planting a model democracy in the Middle East, allegations of a return to the cold-blooded tactics of his predecessor are likely to stir a simmering debate on how well Washington knows its man in Baghdad, and precisely what he envisages for the new Iraq.

There is much debate and rumour in Baghdad about the Prime Minister's capacity for brutality, but this is the first time eyewitness accounts have been obtained.

A former CIA officer, Vincent Cannisatraro, recently told The New Yorker: "If you're asking me if Allawi has blood on his hands from his days in London, the answer is yes, he does. He was a paid Mukhabarat [intelligence] agent for the Iraqis, and he was involved in dirty stuff."

In Baghdad, varying accounts of the shootings are interpreted by observers as useful to a little-known politician who, after 33 years in exile, needs to prove his leadership credentials as a "strongman" in a war-ravaged country that has no experience of democracy.

Dr Allawi's statement dismissed the allegations as rumours instigated by enemies of his interim government.

But in a sharp reminder of the Iraqi hunger for security above all else, the witnesses did not perceive themselves as whistle-blowers. In interviews with the Herald they were enthusiastic about such killings, with one of them arguing: "These criminals were terrorists. They are the ones who plant the bombs."

Before the shootings, the 58-year-old Prime Minister is said to have told the policemen they must have courage in their work and that he would shield them from any repercussions if they killed insurgents in the course of their duty.

The witnesses said the Iraqi police observers were "shocked and surprised". But asked what message they might take from such an act, one said: "Any terrorists in Iraq should have the same destiny. This is the new Iraq.

"Allawi wanted to send a message to his policemen and soldiers not to be scared if they kill anyone - especially, they are not to worry about tribal revenge. He said there would be an order from him and the Interior Ministry that all would be fully protected.

"He told them: 'We must destroy anyone who wants to destroy Iraq and kill our people.'

"At first they were surprised. I was scared - but now the police seem to be very happy about this. There was no anger at all, because so many policemen have been killed by these criminals."

Dr Allawi had made a surprise visit to the complex, they said.

Neither witness could give a specific date for the killings. But their accounts narrowed t

Bush on the Bus
The president's magical mystery tour through our American nightmare
by Justin Raimondo
If Dick Cheney isn't F-you-ing Democrats on the floor of the U.S. Senate, George W. Bush is flipping off teenage boys in East Lampeter, PA, as the Bush-mobile swings through town and the residents come out to greet their sovereign Lord:

"The action got started off right when we arrived on the scene, and seven or eight teenage guys decided to 're-enact' the prison abuse scandals in Iraq by stripping down to thongs and making a human pyramid, while donning black hoods. The police officers on the scene immediately tackled them and led them out in handcuffs. It will be interesting to see how that plays out in court."

I wonder what they're charged with: sunbathing without a permit? Illegal simulation of a Madonna music video? Now here's an antiwar movement that even Andrew Sullivan can learn to appreciate.

Oh, but these kids were just getting warmed up:

"Now comes the good part. After waiting around for about 45 minutes, the motorcade passed by us again. A few police cars, followed by a van or two, drove by. Then, a Bush/Cheney bus passed, followed by a second one going slower. At the front of this second bus was The W himself, waving cheerily at his supporters on the other side of the highway. Adam, Brendan, and I rose our banner (the More Trees, Less Bush one) and he turned to wave to our side of the road. His smile faded, and he raised his left arm in our direction. And then, George W. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States of America, extended his middle finger.

"Read that last sentence again: I got flipped off by George W. Bush."

Yes, the Bush bus tour sure is mixing it up with the masses and showing what a regular guy the president is, roughing it in the wilds of Pennsylvania, and penetrating darkest West Virginia, where, in Charleston, he was met by more of his happy subjects:

"A husband and wife who wore anti-Bush T-shirts to the president's Fourth of July appearance aren't going down without a fight: They will be represented by lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union as they contest the trespassing charges against them Thursday morning in Charleston Municipal Court.

"Police took Nicole and Jeff Rank away in handcuffs from the event, which was billed as a presidential appearance, not a campaign rally. They were wearing T-shirts that read, 'Love America, Hate Bush.'"

Mr. and Mrs. Rank had tickets, and entered the event legally, but apparently weren't in what we call nowadays a "free speech zone" â outside of which the Constitution no longer has effect. Nicole Rank, who was working for FEMA, was told the next day that she is "no longer needed," but the couple, based in Corpus Christi, Texas, are staying in the area to fight the charges.

The president is losing a lot of supporters: I mean, I doubt the Ranks are Republicans, but even Francis "The End of History" Fukuyama wants to see an end to George W. Bush's presidency:

"Famous academic Francis Fukuyama, one of the founding fathers of the neo-conservative movement that underlies the policies of US President George W. Bush's administration, said on July 13 that he would not vote for the incumbent in the November 2 US Presidential election.

"In addition to distancing himself from the current administration, Fukuyama told Time magazine that his old friend, US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, should resign."

Once a rising young star in the neocon firmament, Fukuyama signed a 1998 letter to then President Clinton, sponsored by the Project for a New American Century, urging him to take out after Iraq, and another one shortly after 9/11, urging George W. Bush not to be distracted by Osama bin Laden when he should really be going after Iraq, Hezbollah, Syria, and the Palestinians â oh, and don't forget that "a serious and victorious war on terrorism will require a large increase in defense spending."

But people can always change their minds â yes, even at the End of History.

It can be pretty frustrating, living in George W. Bush's America: people are going a little crazy, in an amusing sort of way. Like the guy who â pissed off at the intrusive idiocy displayed by airport security, had some Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron waving a wand at him and decided to just drop his trousers, then and there. He wasn't wearing any underwear.

Undergarments are so 9/10-ish â I mean, these days, you never know when you're going to be stopped and searched. So why not make it easier on Homeland Security?

I was going to write about the Niger uranium brouhaha, a labyrinthine scandal which has lately acquired a few more layers of complexity. The issue has been revived by the release of the Senate's report â not to mention the Butler report [pdf file], over on the other side of the Pond â which supposedly debunks Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson's debunking of Iraq's alleged atte

US bank helped Pinochet hide millions of dollars: US Senate report

A respected American bank discretely helped former Chilean dictator Augusto
Pinochet to hide millions of dollars over an eight-year period, even after
he was arrested in London in 1998 and a court froze his assets, a US Senate
report said.

Executives of Washington-based Riggs Bank approached Pinochet in Chile in
1994 and invited him to open an account, said Senator Carl Levin, delivering
the conclusions of the document in the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on
Investigations.

Levin, calling the 88-year-old Pinochet a "notorious military leader accused
of involvement with death squads, corruption, arms sales and drug
trafficking," said the former general agreed to open the account.

"The bank opened an account for him personally, helped him establish two
offshore shell corporations in the Bahamas called Ashburton and Althorp, and
then opened more accounts in the name of those shell corporations both here
and in the UK (Britain)," Levin said.

>From 1994 to 2002, Pinochet deposited between four million to eight million
dollars in his Riggs accounts, the report said.

Pinochet, who ruled Chile with an iron fist from 1973-1990, was arrested in
London in October 1998 after Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon demanded his
extradition in order to try him on charges of human rights abuses.

He was allowed to return to Chile in 2000 after being released on grounds of
failing health.

"In 1998, when Mr Pinochet was arrested in London on charges of crimes
against humanity and a court issued an order seeking to freeze his bank
accounts, Riggs quietly helped him move money from London to the United
States," said Levin, a Michigan Democrat.

In March 1999, while Pinochet was still under arrest, the bank authorized
the transfer of 1.6 million dollars from a London account of Althorp to a
new one in the United States, despite a court order to freeze the accounts,
the report said.

"Needless to say, (the bank) didn't alert law enforcement or the courts to
his accounts," said Levin. "We can't allow our financial systems to be
misused by corrupt dictators, terrorists or other criminals."

In testimony before the committee, Riggs President Lawrence Hebert said the
bank "has not been accused of money laundering" and is "fully and actively
cooperating with all law enforcement efforts."

However the Senate subcommittee's chairman, Republican Senator Norm Coleman,
lamented the bank's decision to keep Pinochet's accounts secret from US bank
regulators.

"For eight years, Riggs officials did not verify the source of his wealth,
nor did they disclose the existence of these accounts to the Office of the
Comptroller of the Currency (OCC)," Coleman said.

In Santiago, Chilean President Ricardo Lagos said that if the report were
confirmed, an investigation would be appropriate.

"If the result of the US Senate investigation determines that level of
accounts, and who the account holder is, some kind of commission probably
should be set up to investigate" to determine "the nature of those
accounts," said Lagos.

Rumsfeld Relegated to Less Visible Role
Thu Jul 15, 2:19 PM ET
By ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer

WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, for years the most public
face of the Bush administration's war on terrorism, has suddenly become
scarce.

Burdened by the Iraq prisoner abuse scandal and constrained by the
presidential election campaign, the Pentagon chief who spearheaded the
Afghanistan and Iraq wars has been relegated to a less visible role.

Once seemingly in danger of being fired over the prisoner abuse, Rumsfeld
appears to have survived. Yet some wonder whether the White House might
still conclude he is a political liability and prefer he leave this summer.

"Donald Rumsfeld has gone from being the most popular spokesperson for the
Bush administration policies to something of a pariah," said Loren Thompson
of the Lexington Institute, a think tank.

"Whereas before the White House was happy to see him speaking in public
whenever he chose, now it kind of cringes for fear of what the results might
be," Thompson added.

Since an April 27 news conference - one day before CBS News broadcast
photographs of U.S. soldiers abusing Iraqis at the Abu Ghraib prison -
Rumsfeld has appeared in the Pentagon briefing room just twice, on May 4 and
June 17. In April he had four Pentagon news conferences; in March he had
three.

Larry Di Rita, the chief spokesman for Rumsfeld, said the change is not an
indication the secretary has fallen out of favor with the White House.

Rather, it reflects the fact that when Iraq's sovereignty was restored June
28 and the Coalition Provisional Authority was disbanded, the Defense
Department was no longer in charge of Iraq, the spokesman said.

Various U.S. public opinion polls show the defense secretary's popularity on
the decline.

He was viewed favorably by two-thirds two years ago and almost as many at
the start of the war in March 2003. By last September his favorable rating
was just above 50 percent, and the most recent poll, in February, had it
slipping about 10 points further.

The last time Rumsfeld held a Pentagon news conference, nearly a month ago,
he was asked about his lower public profile.

"I've been very much involved," Rumsfeld retorted dismissively. Evidently
armed in advance, he rattled off statistics on the number of his speeches,
interviews and congressional appearances.

Rumsfeld has continued to travel abroad with regularity. He was in Turkey
and Moldova in late June and he made a one-day trip to Iraq on May 13 to
visit U.S. troops at the Abu Ghraib prison. In early June he visited
Bangladesh and Singapore.

The only time he has fielded reporters' questions in Washington this month
was at the State Department, where he and Secretary of State Colin Powell
appeared briefly with Australian officials.

For a time after the Abu Ghraib scandal, it looked as though Rumsfeld might
be forced out. On May 5, White House aides leaked word that President Bush
had told Rumsfeld he was unhappy about not being told about the abuse
sooner.

Two days later, during an appearance before the Senate Armed Services
Committee, Rumsfeld apologized for the abusive conduct and said he accepted
full responsibility.

Rumsfeld, who turned 72 this month, said he would not quit just to satisfy
his political enemies but added that if he felt he could no longer be
effective as defense secretary, "I'd resign in a minute."

William Nash, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and a
retired two-star Army general who commanded American peacekeeping forces in
Bosnia, said the White House's political calculations will determine
Rumsfeld's fate.

"Right now everything in this administration is being measured again

Philippines government to withdraw troops from Iraq
By Laura Tiernan
16 July 2004

In another blow to the Bush administration and its occupation of Iraq, the
Philippines government, one of the staunchest US allies in the "war on
terror", has begun withdrawing its military contingent. The pullout from
Iraq-one month ahead of a mandated August 20 exit date-came despite
top-level appeals from US officials that the troops remain.

Philippine Foreign Secretary Delia Albert announced the withdrawal on
Wednesday, declaring: "The Foreign Ministry is co-ordinating the pullout of
the humanitarian contingent with the Ministry of Defence. As of today, our
head count is down from 51 to 43."

Her brief statement came amid a deepening political crisis for President
Gloria Arroyo Macapagal, provoked by the kidnapping of a Filipino contract
worker in Iraq. Angelo de la Cruz, a 46-year-old father of eight was taken
hostage last week as he was driving a truckload of crude oil from Saudi
Arabia through Fallujah.

In a video released July 7, an Islamic terrorist group calling itself the
Khaled bin Al-Waleed Brigade, demanded the Philippine government remove its
troops by July 20 or de la Cruz would be executed. Screened on Al-Jazeera
television, the footage showed de la Cruz surrounded by three armed men
wearing balaclavas.

A second video released three days later carried a plea to Arroyo from de la
Cruz: "I beg you to withdraw the troops from Iraq."

Within days, de la Cruz's capture became the focus for antiwar sentiment in
the Philippines, fuelling demands for an immediate end to its troop
commitment in Iraq. Millions attended church services across the country,
with Catholics and Muslims coming together to pray for his release. In Hong
Kong, Filipinos demonstrated Sunday outside the Philippine consulate. Two
days of protests followed in Manila, despite a media blackout imposed by
Arroyo, with hundreds dispersed by police water-cannon. Placards included,
"De la Cruz: Victim of Poverty" and "Stop supporting US war!"

Angelo De la Cruz's relatives also urged the president to act. De la Cruz
travelled to Saudi Arabia for work after lengthy unemployment. According to
Reuters, his niece, Wilma de la Cruz told a press conference: "Mrs Arroyo
should make a firm stand. She should save my uncle's life and not consider
what benefits she might get from supporting the US war in Iraq."

This antiwar sentiment is rooted in the bitter historical experience of the
Philippines and is linked inextricably to the most basic social problems
facing the Filipino masses. A US colony until 1946, the archipelago remains
beholden to US economic interests. More than $3.4 billion in direct
investment flowed into the country from the US last year. Eight out of ten
Filipinos live on less than $US2 a day and about 40 percent of the
population lives below the official poverty line. Unemployment, currently at
11 percent is steadily rising.

De la Cruz is one of eight million Filipinos who have been forced to seek
work abroad. Most are contract labourers and house servants, with an
estimated 1.4 million stationed in the Middle East. Overseas Filipino
Workers (OFWs) are often employed in dangerous and backbreaking work. Their
status is akin to that of slaves because they lack the protections afforded
to citizens and because UN and ILO conventions governing working conditions
have not been ratified in many of the backward Gulf states.

The plight of overseas Filipinos resonates throughout the country. Popular
support for de la Cruz recalls the events of March 1995 when a Filipino maid
was convicted of murder and executed in Singapore. Mass demonstrations
protesting her innocence and condemning the inhumane treatment of OFWs swept
the Philippines with two senior

Audit: Poor control of Iraq oil money

  Friday 16 July 2004, 16:39
Makka Time, 13:39 GMT

A UN-backed watchdog has reported weak controls over Iraqi oil riches under
the US-led occupation, including use of the money for a no-bid Halliburton
contract.

The International Advisory and Monitoring Board (IAMB) on
Thursday released a critical first audit of the Development Fund of Iraq, which
holds Iraqi oil income and the balance of frozen Iraqi assets and the UN
oil-for-food-programme.
The audit by accountants KPMG found that from the establishment
of the fund in May last year to the end of 2003:
- A lack of "meters" to measure Iraqi oil production, despite
repeated requests for them by the IAMB, made it impossible to say how much Iraqi
oil had been smuggled out of the country.
- The US-led occupying authority, known as the CPA, which handed
over power to an interim Iraqi government on 28 June, had inadequate accounting
systems and poor record keeping.
- Iraqi spending ministries had insufficient accounting and
payroll records, and they strayed from rules requiring open, competitive tenders
for contracts funded with oil money.
No 'reasonable assurances'
Known oil proceeds, reported frozen assets and transfers from
the UN oil-for-food programme had been properly and transparently accounted for
by the development fund, the KPMG audit said.

"The single qualification to the opinion was that an unknown
quantity of oil was smuggled out of Iraq following the war, resulting in a loss
of oil revenue," it said.
A review of the audit showed controls over the Iraqi oil
industry were insufficient to provide "reasonable assurance" for the
completeness of Iraqi oil sales, the IAMB found.
It also was impossible to be sure oil money was spent on the
purposes intended, said the IAMB, which has officials from the United Nations,
International Monetary Fund, World Bank and Arab Fund for Social and Economic
Development.
The board raised particular concern over the use of Iraqi oil
money for "sole-sourced contracts," which had not been put out to competitive
tender.
Sweet-heart deals?
The US-led occupying forces informed the IAMB that oil money had
been used for a $1.4-billion, no-bid contract for Halliburton, an oil services
company, which was run by Vice President Richard Cheney from 1995 to 2000.

Jean-Pierre Halbwachs, who represents the United Nations on the
board, said he wrote to Paul Bremer, then overseer of Iraq, to ask for a copy of
the audit into the Halliburton contract.
The board also requested a list of all the no-bid contracts paid
for with oil money, and access to the relevant audits, he said.
So far, it had heard nothing.
"There have been, we are told, other sole-source contracts
(besides Halliburton). To whom, and the amount, we are not aware," Halbwachs
said.
"That is what we are trying to establish."

Legal questions remain
IAMB officials said they had been told that legal questions had
to be resolved before they could receive the documents.
The IAMB also had requested but not yet received a copy of a
review of controls in the Iraqi state oil marketing organisation, SOMO.

Since the creation of the Development Fund of Iraq, it has raked
in Iraqi oil export revenue amounting to $11.1 billion, more than half of the
development fund's total cash income of $20.6 billion.
The fund now holds about $7.5 billion.
A UN Security Council resolution endorsing Iraqi "full
sovereignty" still subjects oil revenues to the IAMB's oversight.
The IAMB said it would consider "over the next few weeks"
whether further special audits or investigations were needed.
A second KPMG audit covering the first half of 2004 is already
underway.

'Secret film shows Iraq prisoners sodomised'
By Charles Arthur, Technology Editor
16 July 2004

Young male prisoners were filmed being sodomised by American soldiers at the
Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, according to the journalist who first
revealed the abuses there.

Seymour Hersh, who reported on the torture of the prisoners in New Yorker
magazine in May, told an audience in San Francisco that "it's worse". But he
added that he would reveal the extent of the abuses: "I'm not done reporting
on all this," he told a meeting of the American Civil Liberties Union.

He said: "The boys were sodomised with the cameras rolling, and the worst
part is the soundtrack, of the boys shrieking. And this is your government
at war."

He accused the US administration, and all but accused President George Bush
and Vice-President Dick Cheney of complicity in covering up what he called
"war crimes".

U.S. Won't Turn Over Data for Iraq Audits
By Colum Lynch
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, July 16, 2004; Page A16

UNITED NATIONS, July 15 -- The Bush administration is withholding
information from U.N.-sanctioned auditors examining more than $1 billion in
contracts awarded to Halliburton Co. and other companies in Iraq without
competitive bidding, the head of the international auditing board said
Thursday.

Jean-Pierre Halbwachs, the U.N. representative to the International Advisory
and Monitoring Board (IAMB), said that the United States has repeatedly
rebuffed his requests since March to turn over internal audits, including
one that covered three contracts valued at $1.4 billion that were awarded to
Halliburton, a Texas-based oil services firm. It has also failed to produced
a list of other companies that have obtained contracts without having to
compete.

The Security Council established the IAMB, which includes representatives
from the United Nations, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund,
in May 2003 to ensure that Iraq's oil revenue would be managed responsibly
during the U.S. occupation. The council extended its mandate in July so it
could continue to monitor the use of Iraq's oil revenue after the United
States transferred political authority to the Iraqis in June.

The dispute comes as the board released an initial audit by the accounting
firm KPMG on Thursday that sharply criticized the U.S.-led coalition's
management of billions of dollars in Iraqi oil revenue. The audit also
raised concerns about lax financial controls in some Iraqi ministries,
citing poor bookkeeping and duplicate payments of salaries to government
employees.

The Pentagon did not specifically answer questions about withholding
information to auditors, but released a statement saying the Coalition
Provisional Authority worked hard to manage Iraq's oil resources.

"In a very challenging environment, the CPA made every effort to bring sound
management transparency and oversight to the Development Fund for Iraq while
at the same time improving the quality of life for the Iraqi people," said
Lt. Cmdr. Flex Plexico, a Pentagon spokesman. "The CPA supported the efforts
of the auditors. KPMG's comments and recommendations will be passed on to
the Iraqi interim government for their use."

The audit, which covers May 2003 to December 2003, asserts that the
coalition's management of Iraq's oil was plagued by "inadequate" bookkeeping
and accounting systems, high turnover among coalition finance officials and
a disregard for procedures designed to ensure competitive bidding for
contracts. KPMG is planning to produce a second audit that covers the
coalition's management of the program through June 2004.

The IAMB concluded that more than $10 billion in Iraq's oil proceeds and
frozen assets had been "properly and transparently accounted for" after they
were deposited in the U.S.-controlled Development Fund for Iraq. But it
asserted that "financial controls were insufficient to provide reasonable
assurance" that the money was properly spent.

"KPMG has not reported to us any evidence of fraud," Halbwachs told
reporters before the audit was released. "There are weaknesses that could
lead to fraudulent activities. It makes it easier to defraud the system if
the controls are weak."

In a written response to the criticism included in the report, the U.S.-led
coalition said management of Iraq's oil industry was hampered by ongoing
violence.

"Although the auditor encountered difficulties, they are generally the
result of the challenging work environment and the precautions the security
conditions demanded," according to a statement included in the audit. "For
example, retrieving a simple bank statement from the Ce

Brazil pledges

Brazil's government will present a controversial proposal by 2005 to
  grant the central bank autonomy.

The move is part of a wave of reforms the left-leaning administration
of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, president, will launch after October's
municipal elections. Other measures include deregulation of the costly
labour market and an overhaul of a corrupt union system, Antonio Palocci,
the finance minister, told the Financial Times. "I am focusing on the
measures that will prepare Brazil institutionally to grow for a decade or
more without interruptions," Mr Palocci said. Last week, Congress approved
a judicial reform and a new bankruptcy law.
The central bank autonomy proposal was shelved last year amid criticism
from hardliners in the governing Workers' party.
Mr Palocci argued the bank's de facto autonomy needed to be
"institutionalised". The proposal would grant directors a fixed term and
autonomy to pursue inflation targets set by the government. "Of course
there will be some controversy but I am determined to present this bill,"
  he said.
The government's new-found confidence follows strong economic growth
indicators in recent weeks. Mr Palocci projects the economy to grow by 4
per cent this year, exceeding initial expectations of 3.5 per cent.
"To the extent that economic policy is showing results as it is now,
obviously criticism will diminish," he said in reference to attacks from
  government allies this year.
On top of strong export and agriculture growth figures, industrial
production in May grew 7.8 per cent over the previous year. That rate
could rise to 13 per cent in June, according to CSFB, the investment bank.
"We are seeing much stronger growth than expected in the second quarter,"
said Nilson Teixeira, a CSFB economist.
Financial bodies this week began revising year-end growth forecasts.
"Four per cent should become the new consensus," said Tendencias, a
  consultancy.
In response to concerns over longer-term investment, Mr Palocci
insisted there "would be important investment announcements in coming
months" and cited expansion plans in the steel, paper, mining and
  agriculture sectors.
The government was negotiating with multinational semiconductor
manufacturers to install a plant in Brazil, he said. "Investments pledged
so far are sufficient to increase our growth capacity to 5 per cent."
Mr Palocci cautioned that there were obstacles ahead. The Supreme Court
could annul pension payment tax, approved last year to reduce the social
security deficit. The levy is worth R$36bn ($12bn) over 20
years.

9/11 MEMO REVEALS ASBESTOS 'COVER-UP'
By SAM SMITH

July 16, 2004 --

An Environmental Protection Agency memo claims city and federal officials
concealed data that showed lower Manhattan air was clouded with asbestos
after the World Trade Center collapse.

And officials sat on the alarming information even as they told the public
it was safe to return downtown, the internal memo says.

Testing by the city Department of Environmental Protection showed the air
downtown had more than double the level of asbestos considered safe for
humans, claimed federal EPA environmental scientist Cate Jenkins, who
supplied the memo to The Post.

The data, which Jenkins says she culled from state records, appear damning.

On the day after the attack, the memo claims, city test results from the
corner of Centre and Chambers streets and from the corner of Spruce and Gold
streets showed asbestos concentration at about twice the level considered
safe by the EPA.

The city did not release this information to the public, Jenkins says.

The next day, Sept. 13, city tests were "overloaded" with asbestos in the
air < so much that the lab could not conclude precise amounts < along Church
Street.

Again, the information was withheld, the memo claims.

When the city published the test results for the weeks following 9/11 on its
Web site in February 2002, there were 17 instances where the data was either
understated or left blank, Jenkins asserts in her report.

"New York City could wiggle out of the [claim of] concealment, because they
weren't making any explicit statements about data at the time," Jenkins told
The Post. "But the EPA can't wiggle out of this. They said the air was safe
at the same time they were coordinating data with the city."

To drive her point home, Jenkins compares statements made by the EPA on the
same day test data was showing dangerous levels of asbestos.

On Sept. 18, then-EPA administrator Christie Whitman said the public in
lower Manhattan was not being exposed to "excessive levels of asbestos."

That same day, city testing data, some of which was later made public,
showed asbestos levels 50 percent higher and more above what her agency
considers safe, the memo states

REVISED News Release

HUD No. 04-064

HUD APPROVES $176 MILLION PLAN FOR DEMOLITION OF
DEUTSCHE BANK BUILDING, FUNDS CULTURAL PROGRAMS AND
LOWER MANHATTAN TOURISM IN LIEU OF RENEWING CHINATOWN
an LOWER EASTSIDE.

Federal funding to help development of World Trade
Center Memorial

NEW YORK - Since September 11th, 2001, the Deutsche
Bank Building at 130 Liberty Street has remained
unoccupied-a severely damaged and obviously toxic
remnant of the devastation inflicted by the terror
attacks on the World Trade Center. Under a $176
million plan approved today by the Department of
Housing and Urban Development, the Deutsche Bank
building will be "deconstructed." (READ:asbestos
abated, encapsulated and disposed of. Nearby, in the
footprints of the Twin Towers, a new memorial to the
victims of terrorism will emerge.

"HUD is proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with New
York to revitalize Lower Manhattan into the crowning
jewel of this spectacular City," said HUD Secretary
Alphonso Jackson. "The programs funded under this plan
will help provide a permanent tribute to the families
and friends we lost and will breathe new life into a
vibrant Lower Manhattan."

Since September 11th, HUD has announced more than $3.4
billion in direct assistance to New York to help local
businesses recover from the disaster; to provide
residential assistance grants to encourage tenants to
remain or locate in Lower Manhattan; and, to begin the
work of redeveloping the area. HUD has also encouraged
the development of more than 300 units of affordable
housing to balance the luxurious amenities built by
the funds.

World Trade Center Memorial and Cultural Program

A World Trade Center Memorial and Cultural Program is
intended to counter the blighting effect of the events
of September 11th. The project will ultimately help
provide a permanent memorial to the victims of the
terror attacks on that day as well as to those who
were killed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the Pentagon
and to those who died in the terrorist bombing of the
World Trade Center on February 26, 1993.

Designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape
architect Peter Walker, Reflecting Absence features
reflecting pools within sunken voids that turn the
footprints of the Twin Towers within a grove of trees
into a steeplechase while intended to provid a final
resting place for the unidentified remains of those
killed. The memorial will be set within the context of
a busy urban environment yet will offer a quiet and
respectful setting for remembrance and contemplation.
For more information about the memorial and to view an
artist's rendering of the winning design, visit
www.wtcsitememorial.org/fin7.html.

Lower Manhattan Tourism

Proposed by the Lower Manhattan Development
Corporation (LMDC), the funding plan will also
stimulate cultural development and tourism by
promoting The Tribeca Film Festival and the Splendor
of Florence.

Since 2002, the Tribeca Film Festival has been a major
recipient of LMDC FUNDS to the exclusion of the poorer
neighborhoods east of Broadway. While the cinematic
event attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to
Lower Manhattan it can't seem to pay for it self. The
festival is a critical and popular success and has
generated more than $60 million in revenues for
Tribeca merchants in its first two years. In addition
to screening productions of new filmmakers, the
Tribeca Family Festival offers a culturally diverse
street fair and family celebration over a seven-block
stretch of Greenwich Street. A three-day Drive-In also
provides film lovers an opportunity to watch classic
movies on nearby Pier 25.

The Splendor of Florence Festival celebrates the
artistic, cultural,

Asia Times
Jul 13, 2004
...Americans work hard because the world's entrepreneurs become Americans
in order to work hard. In 1998 one-third of the scientific workforce in Silicon
Valley was Asian, according to a 1998 survey by the Public Policy Institute of
California; more important, Asians headed one-quarter of Silicon Valley
enterprises. No American matches the prototype better than my Asia Times Online
colleague Henry C K Liu, who inveighs against "US imperialism" from a New York
business address. With all due respect, Henry's choice of address does more to
promote the United States than his invective does to harm it. Empires
fall, we are told, when their subjects become fat and lazy. More accurate would
be to say that men build empires precisely in order to become fat and lazy,
that is, to "wring their bread from the sweat of other men's faces", as
Abraham Lincoln said of the slaveholders. Of all the silver wrung
from American mines after the Spanish conquests, not a penny remained in
Spain, observed the historian Fernand Braudel. It went to China for silk and
spices. There it lay like a dragon's hoard until the
19th century, when China disgorged it to Britain in exchange for opium.
Loot on the service of sloth defines the dead empires of the
past. Spain looted the New World to attire hidalgos in Chinese silk; England
conquered India and ravaged China so that fortune-hunters could come home as
gentry; Rome enslaved half of Europe in the latifundia so that Romans could eat
the free bread ration and watch atrocities in the Coliseum; the sugar, tobacco
and cotton trades denuded West Africa of a third of its people so that parvenu
planters could pose as aristocrats. Imperial Sparta impressed its neighbors as
helots to maintain its own population as an aristocratic military caste;
imperial Athens exacted tribute from its maritime dependencies to support a
leisured elite. The United States might have turned into an imperial
power. It fought a bloody Civil War to stop the Southern Confederacy from
turning Latin America into a vast slave plantation (Happy
birthday, Abe: Pass the blood, February 10). Professor Robert E May,
I reported, demonstrated this in The Southern Dream of a Caribbean Empire
(1973). He noted, "The Memphis Daily Appeal, December 30, 1860, wrote that a
slave 'empire' would arise 'from San Diego, on the Pacific Ocean, thence
southward, along the shore line of Mexico and Central America, at low tide, to
the Isthmus of Panama; thence South - still South! - along the western shore
line of New Granada and Ecuador, to where the southern boundary of the latter
strikes the ocean; thence east over the Andes to the head springs of the Amazon;
thence down the mightiest of inland seas, through the teeming bosom of the
broadest and richest delta in the world, to the Atlantic Ocean'."
Abraham Lincoln sustained a biblical scale of slaughter to stop men from
"wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces". During the past
century the people of the US South have won deserved fame for industriousness
and self-reliance. That is no surprise, for the Civil War killed off all the
Southerners who preferred to hunt, gamble and duel. As long as talented fellows
like Henry Liu denounce US imperialism from New York rather than Shanghai, it is
pointless to argue that the United States is an empire, much less that it is
overextended. In what way might one argue that the US is "overextended"?
The missions that the administration of President George W Bush has undertaken
strain America's troop strength. America's detractors, though, should be careful
what they wish for. To eliminate unfriendly regimes and control oil supplies,
the US does not need the sort of occupa

How Israel Created the Myth of Al-Qaeda

By Seymour Hersh

These Israeli citizens came into Iraq disguised as Arab or Kurdish

civilians, businessmen.  Maybe "contractors"?   Under contract with the

Pentagon's neocon office? Your tax dollars at work?

How much of their work is blamed on Abu Musab al-Zarqawi? How much of

Israel's terrorism is blamed on "Al-Qaeda"?

I have investigated the development of the "mujahideen" and here is my conclusion:

In the 80's, Israel supervised the recruitment of Arab Afghan "mujahideen" supposedly to fight against Russia.   They became cannon fodder and refugees before they ended up in Guantanamo.

THEIR REAL PURPOSE WAS TO HELP ISRAEL CREATE A USEFUL MYTH: AL-QAEDA.

The Arab mujahideen were rather harmless as recent revelations from Guantanamo have shown.

Israeli and Jewish-American intelligence specialists were trusted by the

CIA--Israelis being "allies" and experts on the Middle East--to recruit

the Arab "mujahideen" to be used by the US  against Russia. Israelis

disguised as Arab or Pakistani missionaries  (tablighis) even ran the recruitment centers. Israelis playing Muslim missionaries (tablighis) were caught in India and Israel rushed to retrieve them.

The Arab "mujahideen" themselves were inefficient and almost useless. I

have heard from the relatives of many who died in vain in clumsy incidents in Afghanistan.

All the Zionists wanted was a story, a myth that would enable them to create another myth: "Al-Qaeda." The Zionists  needed this myth as an excuse for their long-term plans for the "war on terror," a war to destabilize the Middle East and pit the world against Muslims.

Neither Bin Laden nor the Arab refugees he took care of were of any

military significance. The Afghans themselves  were the real efficient mujahideen because they knew the territory and the tribal structure. The Afghans actually saw the Arabs as nuisance.

Arabs say "nothing comes out of a pot except what's in it." When the neocon liars speak about Arab/Islamic terrorism  and Al-Qaeda, they are in fact talking about what they

themselves are  doing. They are talking about Israeli covert activities.

No Arabs are involved. Israeli commandos move around using forged or stolen Arab ID's and--if necessary--they wear  masks to hide their real identities, such as in beheading videos.

Israelis continue to fake whatever it takes to prove that the "war on terror," i.e. the war on Arabs, has to continue.

Listen to them more carefully, folks. The  Zionists in our midst have been telling us the truth all along. Just replace "Arab" with "Israeli," replace "Al-Qaeda" with "Mossad," etc.

norg,

i should back up a bit and clarify my position -- i do not accuse or
suspect kevin and his site of being willfully part of some bad agenda.
his work strikes me as very sincere, but in my opinion deluded on some
ideological points. so i'm just criticizing the fact that, the way i
see it, he's including some disinfo memes that are harmful. i'm saying
this as someone who used to think the same way in many respects, up
until about a year ago.

one can look at other ideologies and see similar problems... for
instance, i think that the vast majority of marxists and trotskyists
really sincerely believe that a "world revolution" to end the existence
of nation-states is a way to liberate the masses from oppression, but
they don't stop to think about how this plays into the hands of
globalists who also want to eliminate nation-states to make way for a
global government. similarly, i think there are many people who are
absolutely sincere in their belief that radical "localism", romantic
individualism, and anti-statism are a way to supposedly save us from
big brother, without looking to see who exactly has been promoting
these beliefs over the generations, and the hidden reasons why. but i
apologize if i came across as accusing cryptogon of being a front... i
just think their message is a bit contaminated. i get a bit worked up
because i think we're going to see serious worldwide implications of
certain widespread disinfo memes in our near future. i believe that
the NWO's currently accelerating hype about supposed resource &
environmental crises is intimately related to long-running psyops
concerning anti-statism and agrarian / utopian ideologies, as per my
ideas of an ongoing dialectic that i shared in my last email.

as for trotskyists and chossudovsky, here's something from the 4th
international from a couple year's back, which denounces chossudovsky's
advocacy of restoring the nation-state as a defence against
globalisation (it's not an example of what i would call a "savage
attack", which i have seen from marxists elsewhere, but the ideological
fundamentalism is clear. true marxists are actually not statist; they
are very anti-statist when it comes to current forms of constitutional
representative democracy, and they spread the dangerous myth that
implementing any changes to ownership & distribution of weath requires
demolishing constitutional representative democracy, i.e. the
"bourgeois state". i tend to believe that the marxist psy-op was
created mainly for this purpose.)

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2000/feb2000/cho1-f21.shtml

(i don't see the cryptogon site as promoting this particular brand of
ideology, from what i've seen, but manichean anti-state and
anti-"hierarchy" rhetoric lead strongly to similar positions, from a
different angle.)

one notable thing about trotskyists is that they tend to support free
trade, a position which goes back to marx & engels, because they assert
(correctly) that free trade accelerates the destruction of
nation-states, thus in their view accelerating their opportunities for
"world revolution". an interesting example:

http://users.cyberone.com.au/myers/xTrots.html

hart & negri's "empire" is another example of current radical
neo-marxist theory which fervently denounces the thought of restoring
the nation-state against globalization.

in a related vein, the overblown efforts of radicals chomsky, zinn, and
the like to rubbish the constitutional founders strike me as a
left-gatekeeper firebreak against the possibility of progressives
endorsing a comeback of the old federalist american system ideas.
every single mention of tariffs and other american system policies in
zinn's "people's history of the US" is incredibly negative, portraying
such things as the schemes of a 'rich white men' statist conspiracy to
centralize p

Mother Of Murdered USAF Major Calls Michael Moore, "Maggot That Eats Off The Dead"

TownHall.com
Moore's propJohn McCaslin
July 13, 2004

The family of U.S. Air Force Maj. Gregory Stone was shocked to learn that video footage of the major's Arlington National Cemetery burial was included by Michael Moore in his movie "Fahrenheit 9/11."
Stone was killed in March 2003 by a grenade that officials said was thrown into his tent by Sgt. Hasan K. Akbar, who is on trial for murder.
It's been a big shock, and we are not very happy about it, to say the least," Kandi Gallagher, Stone's aunt and family spokeswoman, tells Washington Times reporter Audrey Hudson.
We are furious that Greg was in that casket and cannot defend himself, and my sister, Greg's mother, is just beside herself," Gallagher said. "She is furious. She called him a 'maggot that eats off the dead.'"
The movie, described by critics as political propaganda during an election year, shows video footage of the funeral and Stone's fiancee, Tammie Eslinger, kissing her hand and touching it to his coffin.
The family does not know how Moore obtained the video, and Gallagher said they did not give permission and are considering legal recourse.
She described her nephew as a "totally conservative Republican" and said he would have found the film to be "putrid."
"I'm sure he would have some choice words for Michael Moore," she said. "Michael Moore would have a hard time asking our family for a glass of water if he were thirsty."

Stop Global WHINING--Vote Republican!

"None of us will ever forget this day,
yet we go forward to defend freedom and
all that is good and just in our world."

The issue has been revived by the release of the Senate's report â not to mention the Butler report [pdf file], over on the other side of the Pond â which supposedly d

The meatheads have a shallow grasp on history at best and a shallow grasp
on elementary logic and reasoning at best. When God said to Isaiah, "Let
us reason together" I guess they were out of town.

The fallacious thinking as below is obvious even to the general public and
to the scholarly community from genetics to history, it is simply
LUDICROUS. For that reason one must wonder if JDL grants are what keeps
them going. Na...JDL isn't that bad. Nah...JDL isn't that smart.

It takes comedic genius like that of Mike Judd to script certifiable
morons in this new online series, "Johnny and Riccy do America".

In the space of one week, the Temecula Twelve rounded up approximately 450 illegal aliens in the interior of Southern California.  California Republicans were overjoyed by the fact that the Administration was finally doing its job of removing illegal aliens from our State, we e-mailed our thanks to the San Diego Sector of the Border Patrol.

Then the Democrats and the Mexican government started to complain and as a result, Asa caved to the friends of the soft slavery of illegal immigration.  We Americans and LEGAL immigrants are mad as Hell and are not going to take it from Republican cowards and traitors any more!

Corporate power is the driving force behind US foreign
policy - and the slaughter in Iraq

JK Galbraith
Thursday July 15, 2004
The Guardian

At the end of the second world war, I was the director
for overall effects of the United States strategic
bombing survey - Usbus, as it was known. I led a large
professional economic staff in assessment of the
industrial and military effects of the bombing of
Germany. The strategic bombing of German industry,
transportation and cities, was gravely disappointing.
Attacks on factories that made such seemingly crucial
components as ball bearings, and even attacks on
aircraft plants, were sadly useless. With plant and
machinery relocation and more determined management,
fighter aircraft production actually increased in early
1944 after major bombing. In the cities, the random
cruelty and death inflicted from the sky had no
appreciable effect on war production or the war.

These findings were vigorously resisted by the Allied
armed services - especially, needless to say, the air
command, even though they were the work of the most
capable scholars and were supported by German industry
officials and impeccable German statistics, as well as
by the director of German arms production, Albert
Speer. All our conclusions were cast aside. The air
command's public and academic allies united to arrest
my appointment to a Harvard professorship and succeeded
in doing so for a year.

Nor is this all. The greatest military misadventure in
American history until Iraq was the war in Vietnam.
When I was sent there on a fact-finding mission in the
early 60s, I had a full view of the military dominance
of foreign policy, a dominance that has now extended to
the replacement of the presumed civilian authority. In
India, where I was ambassador, in Washington, where I
had access to President Kennedy, and in Saigon, I
developed a strongly negative view of the conflict.
Later, I encouraged the anti-war campaign of Eugene
McCarthy in 1968. His candidacy was first announced in
our house in Cambridge.

At this time the military establishment in Washington
was in support of the war. Indeed, it was taken for
granted that both the armed services and the weapons
industries should accept and endorse hostilities -
Dwight Eisenhower's "military-industrial complex".

In 2003, close to half the total US government
discretionary expenditure was used for military
purposes. A large part was for weapons procurement or
development. Nuclear-powered submarines run to billions
of dollars, individual planes to tens of millions each.

Such expenditure is not the result of detached
analysis. From the relevant industrial firms come
proposed designs for new weapons, and to them are
awarded production and profit. In an impressive flow of
influence and command, the weapons industry accords
valued employment, management pay and profit in its
political constituency, and indirectly it is a
treasured source of political funds. The gratitude and
the promise of political help go to Washington and to
the defence budget. And to foreign policy or, as in
Vietnam and Iraq, to war. That the private sector moves
to a dominant public-sector role is apparent.

None will doubt that the modern corporation is a
dominant force in the present-day economy. Once in the
US there were capitalists. Steel by Carnegie, oil by
Rockefeller, tobacco by Duke, railroads variously and
often incompetently controlled by the moneyed few. In
its market position and political influence, modern
corporate management, unlike the capitalist, has public
acceptance. A dominant role in the military
establishment, in public finance and the environment is
assumed. Other public authority is also taken for
granted. Adverse social flaws and their effect do,
however, requir

How awful to have a father who serves as a blood traitor to his sons and acts as
a
recruiter for the New World Order.

As someone whose birth dates the beginning of the Cold War, who grew up ducking
under my school desk in case of imminent nuclear attack, to claim the present
world situation is the most serious in our times is ludicrious.

Absolutely frightening that some folks are so easily brainwashed by the self
serving
elite and are proud to turn their sons (and daughters) into cannon fodder for
the politico-krats.

It is the soldier, not the politicians who die for the political lies
and corrupt motives that send them to foreign lands.

It is the soldier, not the the owners of Exxon who die for oil.

It is the soldier, not the Republican Chickenhawks nor AIPAC, nor
Rupert Murdoch who die in Iraq.

Loyalty To
What? They Have Changed Everything But The Name

July 14, 2004
As a boy I lived at times in Hampden-Sydney, a small college
town in Virginia, where my family had lived for generations. H-S was the Old
South of idyllic imagination. Georgian buildings stood on rolling green laws
shaded by ancient oaks. Quiet reigned. At night stars shone and frogs creaked.
In the woods nearby a stream splashed and chortled over Slippery Rock, where you
could slide bare-bottomed into a moss-lined pool. My father knew Slippery Rock.
So did my grandfather.
People were socially conservative, literate, friendly, living
in houses they had lived in forever. Many were professors, stately men of great
learning. They knew the classics and shared a respect for English. Courtesy was
taken for granted, along with a pleasant formality. My grandfather, who had been
dean and professor of mathematics, wore a coat and tie at meals.
Seven miles away in Farmville, the country seat, lovely old
houses lined High Street, not far from the statue of the Confederate soldier. On
Main Street one passed stores where people had known each other for generations.
A Southern mannerliness prevailed here too. When the wind was right the rich
sweet smell of tobacco came peppery from the ancient processing floors at the
end of town. There was a sense of permanence, of locality. Farmville, like
Hampden-Sydney, like Athens, Alabama in 1957, like New Orleans once, like so
many towns, was its own place, shaped by the people who lived there. You could
feel a loyalty to it. I did.
Perhaps all loyalty is essentially local. America was once a
sprawling tapestry of locality. Boone, North Carolina wasn’t Barstow and Barstow
wasn’t Bluefield and Bluefield wasn’t Amarillo, but they were all what they were
and had their distinctiveness and dignity, their quirky idiosyncrasy.
As a young man I hitchhiked the big roads of the land, roads
that were not the bland isolating limited-access interstates of today. A
memorable thing it was to stand beside a highway in the sprawling western
deserts with your thumb out and the big trucks blasting by with tires whining
and the wind rocking you. It was a wilder America, less controlled. And my God
it was worth seeing.
The mountain men of West Virginia were rougher than they are
now, but they were self-reliant and hardy. Key West—hot, eerily quiet, with a
ratty lived-in feel and a smell of salt water--had not become a tee-shirt
outlet. On the back roads of Georgia, ramshackle country stores sold Moon Pies
and pickled sausage and RC Cola. In all of them people decided locally what they
wanted to be.
It didn’t last. It doesn’t last. Sooner or later, the shopping
mall comes to the outskirts. With it come Gap, Penny’s, McDonald’s, Hecht’s,
Wal-Mart, Sam’s, Office Depot, Staples, Wendy’s. Main Street dies because
Wal-Mart is cheaper. People no longer stroll down Main saying hello to friends.
They drive to the mall and park.
Ruby Tuesday arrives, mass cheer designed at corporate. Red’s
Rib Pit dies. Red’s belonged where it was, with the stuffed buck’s head and the
deer rifle under it on a rack made of antlers. Ruby Tuesday glittered more and
had a better menu.
A man has a certain dignity when he stands in his own farm or
when he owns his store and talks politics with customers. Whether he knows what
he is talking about is not important. Few people do. When he becomes a salaried
warehouseman for a remote office in Milwaukee, the dignity goes. He is a number,
and afraid of his boss.
The localness that made towns memorable withers further under
the onslaught of television. Regional accents vanish. Across the continent
people gawp in electronic synchronicity at sitcoms devised in Hollywood and New
York. These carefully, deliberately, gnaw away at local views of things and
replace them with Appropriate Values. People no longer raise their children. The
box does. Their schooling is determined by texts written far off, also designed
to instill the politics of elsewhere.
Music is the soul of a locality. Zydeco is Louisiana, los
mariachis are Mexico, Presley was the small-town South. New York now
determines our music. Everything is decided from afar. Everything moves toward
uniformity.
And towards degradation. We suffer under a plague of rappers,
human cockroaches scuttling across the sores of a necrotic civilization. If
people in the Bible Belt don’t want to hear muthufuckuhmuthuhfuckuh all
day, don’t want their children exposed to it, why, New York says they must. The
Supreme Court says they must.
How much loyalty do I owe to profits at Warner Brothers? To
nine presumptuous apparitions in black robes who care nothing about me? How much
fondness should I feel for a government that slowly, grindingly destroys all
that made me care about America?
Washington once seemed benign. It was the capital of a
magnifice

This was written by a retired attorney, to his sons, May 19, 2004.

THE WORLD SITUATION - A LETTER TO MY SONS

Dear Tom, Kevin, Kirby and Ted,

As your father, I believe I owe it to you to share some thoughts on the
present world situation. We have over the years discussed a lot of
important things, like going to college, jobs and so forth. But this really
takes precedence over any of those discussions. I hope this might give you
a longer term perspective that fewer and fewer of my generation are left to
speak to.

To be sure you understand that this is not politically flavored, I will tell
you that since Franklin D. Roosevelt, who led us through pre and WWII (1933
- 1945) up to and including our present President, I have without exception,
supported our presidents on all matters of international conflict. This
would include just naming a few in addition to President Roosevelt - WWII:
President Truman - Korean War 1950;  President Kennedy - Bay of Pigs (1961);
President Kennedy - Vietnam (1961); [1] eight presidents (5 Republican & 4
Democrat) during the cold war (1945 - 1991); President Clinton's strikes
on Bosnia (1995) and on Iraq (1998). [2] So be sure you read this as
completely non-political or otherwise you
will miss the point.

Our country is now facing the most serious threat to its existence, as we
know it, that we have faced in your lifetime and mine (which includes WWII).
The deadly seriousness is greatly compounded by the fact that there are very
few of us who think we can possibly lose this war and even fewer who realize
what losing really means.

First, let's examine a few basics:

1. When did the threat to us start?
Many will say September 11th, 2001. The answer as far as the United States
is concerned is 1979, 22 years prior to September 2001, with the following
attacks on us:  Iran Embassy Hostages, 1979;  Beirut, Lebanon Embassy 1983;
Beirut, Lebanon Marine Barracks 1983; Lockerbie, Scotland Pan-Am flight to
New York 1988; First New York World Trade Center attack 1993; Dhahran,
Saudi Arabia Khobar Towers Military complex 1996; Nairobi, Kenya US Embassy
1998; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania US Embassy 1998; Aden, Yemen USS Cole 2000;
New York World Trade Center 2001; Pentagon 2001. (Note that during the
period from 1981 to 2001 there were 7,581 terrorist attacks worldwide). [3]

2. Why were we attacked?
Envy of our position, our success, and our freedoms. The attacks happened
during the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton and
Bush 2.

We cannot fault either the Republicans or Democrats as there were no
provocations by any of the presidents or their immediate predecessors,
Presidents Ford or Carter.

4. Who were the attackers?
In each case, the attacks on the US were carried out by Muslims.

5. What is the Muslim population of the World?
25%

6. Isn't the Muslim Religion peaceful?
Hopefully, but that is really not material. There is no doubt that the
predominately Christian population of Germany was peaceful, but under the
dictatorial leadership of Hitler (who was also Christian), that made no
difference. You either went along with the administration or you were
eliminated. There were 5 to 6 million Christians killed by the Nazis for
political reasons (including 7,000 Polish priests). (Thus, almost the same
number of Christians were killed by the Nazis, as the 6 million holocaust
Jews who were killed by them, and we seldom heard of anything other than
the Jewish atrocities. Although Hitler kept the world focused on the Jews,
he had no hesitancy about killing anyone who got in his way of exterminating
the Jews or of taking over the world - German, Christian or any others. Same with
the Muslim terrorists.

They focus the world on the US, but kill all in the way - their own people
or the Spanish, French or anyone else..

The point here is that just like the peaceful Germans were of no
protection to anyone from the Nazis, no matter how many peaceful Muslims
there may be, they are no protection for us from the terrorist Muslim
leaders and what they are fanatically bent on doing - by their own
pronouncements - killing all of us infidels.
I don't blame the peaceful Muslims. What would you do if the choice was
shut up or die?

7. So who are we at war with?
There is no way we can honestly respond that it is anyone other than the
Muslim terrorists. Trying to be politically correct and avoid verbalizing
this conclusion can well be fatal. There is no way to win if you don't
clearly recognize and articulate who you are fighting.

So with that background, now to the two major questions:
1. Can we lose this war?
2. What does losing really mean?

If we are to win, we must clearly answer these two pivotal questions.

We can definitely lose this war, and as anomalous as it may sound, the major
reason we can lose is that so many of us simply do not fathom the answer to
the second question -

What does losing mean?
