The alleged plagiarism was discovered by blogger Ron Brynaert, who has tracked other plagiarism by Gannon and various Talon News correspondents at his blog, WhyAreWeBackInIraq. A Jun. 17, 2003 article published by Jim Guckert, who wrote under the pen name Jeff Gannon, contains numerous identical quotes and similar phrasing to an article written by Melissa Beecher for the Waltham Daily News Tribune five days earlier. A comparison of the two articles compiled by Brynaert follows. In the article about a Massachusetts couple who refused to let their home-schooled children take a standardized test, Guckert used quotes identical to Beecher's article without attribution. Beecher was the only reporter in attendance at the couple's home the day the Department of Social Services came to collect the children. Both Beecher and her editor were shocked to hear the Guckert would be a panelist. Beecher, who now writes for the Salem News, said she remembered the story Guckert apparently copied from vividly. I remember this particular story so vividly because of the people that were involved," Beecher told RAW STORY. "I had to wake up in the morning at six o'clock in the morning to get there at 6:15 because I had to be there when DSS arrived. "I do understand that major papers use the smaller papers as a way to get their news to know whats going on in some of these smaller communities," she added, "but when direct quotes are used without attribution its not acceptable. Good reporters dont do that. Its upsetting to see that a nationally-recognized personality would. Beecher says she was the only reporter at the event. My frustration lies in that I was the only media at this particular event," she continued. "I saw what one person said to another person. I witnessed what the house looked like, the childrens state of mind, the interactions between people and the exchanges. And to see that appear in someone elses story when they didnt do the legwork is unethical and upsetting. Richard Lodge, editor-in-chief for the western division of the Massachusetts-based Community Newspaper Company, confirmed her account. "What bothers me was that it was so clear that it was our story," Lodge told RAW STORY. "He was not there, and yet he represented to his readers that he was. She was the only reporter in that room. The fact that he didnt attribute it, that he represented to readers that he was there was a lie. He is a liar. Lodge was startled to hear that Guckert would be a panelist at the National Press Club next week. Hes not a journalist," Lodge remarked. "And he misrepresented to anyone reading that website that this was his work, and it was not his work, plain and simple. The completion of the Star Wars, prequel trilogy; wow! Unlike others, I did not mind the Phantom Menace. The first installment needed to establish many things. To some fans, it dragged and there was the whole Jar Jar Binks thing. I like C.G.I. and, as a visual artist, I am amazed by the stunning backgrounds created by todays computer artists as they digitally manipulate every little pixel. The second episode, The Attack of the Clones, was a better film as relationships deepen. We see the Republic and the Senate slowly come under the evil spell of the Dark Side and the Dark Lord Sidious. There are hints that Anakin Skywalker will also fall victim to the negative Force. Episode III finally arrived and is a master work of cinematic art. But, what is George Lucas really writing about? What are we actually seeing on the screen? What does this symbolize in the REAL WORLD? Nearly everyone who views the movie will either love it or hate it. Only a relatively few people will be able to pick out the symbols and understand what George Lucas is really saying: He is showing us a symbolic, full-screen portrayal of the taking over of America by dark forces. The trial team argued that the move would be seen as politically motivated and legally groundless. We do not want politics to be perceived as the underlying motivation, and that is certainly a risk if we make adjustments in our remedies presentation that are not based on evidence, the two top lawyers for the trial team, Sharon Y. Eubanks and Stephen D. Brody, wrote in a memorandum on May 30 to Associate Attorney General Robert D. McCallum that was reviewed by The New York Times. The two lawyers said the lower penalty recommendation ordered by Mr. McCallum would weaken the department's position in any possible settlement with the industry and create an incentive for defendants to engage in future misconduct by making the misconduct profitable. At the close of a major trial that dozens of Justice Department lawyers spent more than five years preparing, the department stunned a federal courtroom last week by reducing the penalties sought against the industry, from $130 billion to $10 billion, over accusations of fraud and racketeering. The decision generated protests from health advocates and Democratic lawmakers, who accused the Bush administration of political motives, and it prompted an internal departmental inquiry. But details of the behind-the-scenes debate over the issue had remained a mystery. The department has vigorously defended the decision, denying political motives and saying the $10 billion reflected an effort to arrive at a figure that would comply with an adverse decision from an appellate court this year that some officials said sharply limited the types of sanctions the department could seek. The department did not dispute the authenticity of the memorandum but declined to make Mr. McCallum or other lawyers available to discuss it. A spokesman for the department, Kevin Madden, said political considerations were never factored into the decision to reduce the penalty. This was a decision that was made on the merits of the case and that strictly followed the law, Mr. Madden said. In light of the appellate court ruling, he said, a decision was made by the department that the best argument for the government to make was one that would preserve credibility in the government's case with the trial judge, would result in a favorable decision from the trial judge and would result in a trial court decision sustainable upon appeal. The newly disclosed documents make clear that the decision was made after weeks of tumult in the department and accusations from lawyers on the tobacco team that Mr. McCallum and other political appointees had effectively undermined their case. Mr. McCallum, No. 3 at the department, is a close friend of President Bush from their days as Skull Bones members at Yale, and he was also a partner at an Atlanta law firm, Alston Bird, that has done legal work for R.J.
