Clergy abuse victims cry foul By Todd Ruger "Three men who met with the Catholic Diocese of Davenport on behalf of victims of sexual abuse by its priests called the response from church leaders "a slap in the face." The men said they presented to the diocese — at the first of several regular meetings required as part of a $9 million settlement with 37 claimants — a list of things that they and other victims would like to see the diocese do to promote healing and prevent future abuse." "The diocese said in a written statement that it "seriously considered the conversation with the victims," but "the new demands by the victims go far beyond any of the terms in the contract (settlement)." http://www.qctimes.net/articles/2005/06/17/news/local/doc42b2565aa32fc188495130.txt

Man gets life in prison for 'evil actions' Children  raped, forced to play sex games with their excrement 6/16/05  By Meghan Gordon - St. Tammany bureau "A former Folsom man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for raping two boys younger than 6, a crime the judge called one of the most egregious cases he has heard. State Judge William "Rusty" Knight told Burt Stockstill, 33, before handing down two life sentencesThe grandfather of one of the boys called Stockstill a monster who used Wicca, a form of witchcraft, as a catalyst to force bizarre acts on the boys. "This ritual is designed to do one thing: break down the inhibitions of all of those involved," the grandfather said.During the trial, both defendants took the stand in their own defense. Stockstill first denied practicing Wicca, then admitted to it on cross-examination." http://www.nola.com/printer/printer.ssf?/base/news-3/111890430186640.xml

[CTRL] president bush touts Artic National Wildlife Oil develeopment

2005-06-20 Thread William A. Bacon
-Caveat Lector-

President Touts ANWR Promise in Energy Remarks

George Bush Today President George Bush spoke to the Small Business
Administrations NATIONAL SMALL BUSINESS WEEK CONFERENCE in Washington,
D.C. His comments widely addressed the need for a comprehensive National
Energy Plan which includes opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to
responsible oil and gas exploration. He stated America needed to wean
itself from foreign sources of oil as much as possible, and that the best
way to do this was to increase domestic production particularly in ANWR.
The President stated new drilling and production technology as proof that
production can take place in ANWR without harming the wildlife or
environment. He left it up to Congress, particularly the Senate to provide
him with an Energy Bill that would include a provision for ANWR
exploration to be delivered to his desk for signature by August. Senator
Pete Dominici, Chairman of the Senate Natural Resources Committee
commented afterwards that he will work toward that timeline and hoped to
provide the legislation for Presidential signature.

They Had a Coup d'etat and We Weren't Invited...Now It's Our Turn
United StatesThey Had a Coup d'etat and We Weren't Invited...Now It's Our Turn By ROSEMARIE JACKOWSKI Jun 19, 2005, 20:04

Exactly when was it that the citizens of the United States lost their country? When did the coup take place and how did I miss it? Maybe I was rotating my tires that night.
There is plenty of evidence that somewhere along the line, we all have lost any influence that we might have had as citizens. Think about the Downing Street Memo. That should be enough to convince even the most ardent fan of the Republican or Democratic Party. That memo is just an echo of the Project for a New American Century.
Amnesty International has recently released a report about the Archipelago of U.S. gulags. Several years ago, I contacted all three of my men in Washington. I requested information about the number and locations of U.S. prisons in foreign countries. I also wanted to know how many prisoners were being held at each location and what their countries of origin were. Surely our members of Congress would have that information. Wrong. My Washington delegation is usually prompt at honoring requests, but this time all three failed to come forth with any information. Yes, I know about FOIA. I remember thinking at the time, "Gee, I wonder what other information is denied to the members of Congress." If the members of Congress don't know what is going on, who is running the show in Washington?
Did we lose our country during the reign of Ollie North? No, I don't think so. I vaguely remember him being interviewed back then. As I remember, he explained that he and the others in the cabal had a plan for a coup but never actually pulled it off because it was not necessary. The coup had already taken place.

on sept 12,1981 at a darkened table in front of a picture window with a
panoramic view of the washington monument, in presence of my esteemed
friends bill tiller, tom bearden and some others, i predicted and
explained why the most likely attack with exotic weapons would be on new
york city and washington dc on about sept 10 of any year -but mostly a
multiple of 4 from 1981- and we watched as strange things happened above
the washington monument which only Tom Bearden had the presence of mind
to photograph.
i gave ideas for nailing down proof without giving away that "we
knew".
in pursuit of the proof i was nearly killed on sept 10, 1987 when the
off-year test proved more powerful than anticipated.
In 1989 a newer more advanced system announced its presence which i
couldnt decipher- but ussr was collapsing anyway.
i was troubled that the old system continued to putter away in the
background under new ownership but was not really concerned per se
because i knew beyond any question of doubt, that the intel service of a
small friendly country had had every square inch of manhatten island
wired for decades.

after 25 years, i am still waiting for somebody to ask me the right
questions.

9,000 dead and the Reality-Based Community
by kos
Sun Jun 19th, 2005 at 23:44:37 PDT
http://www.dailykos.com/
We like to say that we are members of the reality based community. But to say
that,
we have to legitimately live in the reality based community.

So to those who keep passing around that ridiculous "9,000 dead GIs" figure --
stop
it!

I don't know how many times this bullshit rumor has to be shot down.

And the best debunking comes from dear dKos community member Pat K, co-
founder of iCasualties.org:
For two solid years now, Michael White and I have followed the deaths in Iraq
literally
on a daily basis. We haunt the CENTCOM, MNF-Iraq and DOD websites ... as well
as all of the major news feeds. In fact, the two of us have grown adept at
finding
death notices in the news media prior to the military issuing them. For about
the past
year and a half, Michael and I have been joined in the research by Evan D., an
historian in the Washington D.C. area, and by Lynn L., another researcher whose
husband is in the 4th ID. So that makes 4 of us searching the news media and
the
military sites, each and every day mind you, for deaths.

And after all this time, we all four of us concur. Yes, there are a few
unreported
deaths, which I'll explain in a minute. But not thousands. We'd have found them
if
there were.

Here's something that might interest you. If you go to our homepage, you'll
notice a
place up top that says "Fatality Details". Click on that. That'll take you to
our fully
searchable database.

When you get there, scroll down to the bottom of that page to where the Filters
are.
I'm finding that many people simply don't realize these handy, dandy little
tools are
there. Go over to the right to where it says "Country of Death" ... and select,
say,
"Germany" from the drop down list. Then hit the "Apply Filter" button over to
the left.

Voila ... a list of 23 guys will appear ... all of whom died in Germany from
wounds or
illnesses incurred in Iraq ... all of whom have formal releases from the DOD
and who
are on the DOD's death list.

Now go back to the filters and hit "Remove Filter" so that you can start fresh.
Go
back to the "Country of Death" and select "USA", then hit "Apply Filter".
There's 31
troops who died in the USA and whom the DOD has owned up to.

So there's no truth to the rumor that if you die outside of Iraq, the DOD
automatically
ignores you. Yes, occasionally it does ... especially if the death happens
months after
the soldier gets back from Iraq (Lynn's husband knows of 5 men that this
applies to).
And I am told that occasionally Special Forces deaths may be hush-hush. But as
a
rule, no. It's just a wild rumor.

And it's the same with this 7,000 business. If our list were missing thousands
of
names, can you imagine the e-mails we would get from enraged grannies, aunts,
best friends, etc. for daring to leave their loved one OFF !??? I shudder
to think of
it. I get called to task for every little goof-up I make as it is. I recently
mistakenly
entered a soldier's service branch as "U.S. Army National Guard" because that's
what a news article said. Oh my ... the chaplain for the man's unit had an
e-mail in to
me within the HOUR complaining that it was U.S. ARMY RESERVES, dammit! And
then there are the parents who write to say that the DOD published the wrong
hometown, and would I please put the correct one in my database. We have
thousands upon thousands of eyes out there watching that list. We aren't
missing
thousands of names.

The last thing to consider is this: the Bush administration isn't GOOD ENOUGH
to
hide that many deaths. They haven't managed to hide Halliburton's over-runs.
They
haven't managed to hide the troop equipment shortages. And they haven't managed

The move with caution over Iran is not because of the situation
in Iraq; it is because the Bilderbergers and Illuminati itself don't want to

the wave of suicide terror bombings continues unabated with no improvement
in sight, Iraq has already imposed a significant sea change on the Bush
administration.Senior European diplomats and high
level Saudi sources have both told United Press International they have
detected a significant change in tone and policy - welcomed by both Brussels
and Riyadh - from the Bush administration on Middle East issues, especially
Iran, in recent weeks.Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has frozen
the neo-conservatives out of the power positions in the State Department.
And the administration is standing firm against pressure from congress to
turn up the heat on Iran, behind which many observers see the hand of the
Israeli lobby.Nearly 140,000 U.S. troops continue to be bogged down
in Iraq and there appears no likelihood that the numbers will be

Paul Wolfowitz, having failed as yet to bring the blessings of peace and
democracy to Iraq, has been put in charge of the World Bank by President
George W, Bush and has indicated his confidence remains undiminished in his
ability to reduce the enormous problems of sub-Saharan
Africa.Wolfowitz's right hand man, Undersecretary of Defense for
Policy Douglas Feith, the most controversial individual ever to hold that
position, has indicated he will step down during the summer, probably in
July, though has not done so yet.The neo-cons in fact retain immense

Why Ridley Scott's story of the Crusades struck such a
chord in a Lebanese cinema

Having lived in Lebanon 29 years, I too found tears of
laughter running down my face

by Robert Fisk

The Independent (UK)
Saturday, 4th June 2005

Long live Ridley Scott. I never thought I'd say this.
Gladiator had a screenplay that might have come from
the Boy's Own Paper. Black Hawk Down showed the Arabs
of Somalia as generically violent animals. But when I
left the cinema after seeing Scott's extraordinary
sand-and-sandals epic on the Crusades, Kingdom of
Heaven, I was deeply moved - not so much by the film,
but by the Muslim audience among whom I watched it in
Beirut.

I know what the critics have said. The screenplay isn't
up for much and Orlando Bloom, playing the loss-of-
faith crusader Balian of Ibelin, does indeed look - as
The Independent cruelly observed - like a backpacker
touring the Middle East in a gap year.

But there is an integrity about its portrayal of the
Crusades which, while fitting neatly into our
contemporary view of the Middle East - the moderate
crusaders are overtaken by crazed neo-conservative
barons while Saladin is taunted by a dangerously al-
Qa'ida-like warrior - treats the Muslims as men of
honour who can show generosity as well as ruthlessness
to their enemies.

It was certainly a revelation to sit through Kingdom of
Heaven not in London or New York but in Beirut, in the
Middle East itself, among Muslims - most of them in
their 20s - who were watching historical events that
took place only a couple of hundred miles from us. How
would the audience react when the Knights Templars went
on their orgy of rape and head-chopping among the
innocent Muslim villagers of the Holy Land, when they
advanced, covered in gore, to murder Saladin's
beautiful, chadored sister? I must admit, I held my
breath a few times.

I need not have bothered. When the leprous King of
Jerusalem - his face covered in a steel mask to spare
his followers the ordeal of looking at his
decomposition - falls fatally ill after honourably
preventing a battle between Crusaders and Saracens,
Saladin, played by that wonderful Syrian actor Ghassan
Massoud - and thank God the Arabs in the film are
played by Arabs - tells his deputies to send his own
doctors to look after the Christian king.

At this, there came from the Muslim audience a round of
spontaneous applause. They admired this act of mercy
from their warrior hero; they wanted to see his
kindness to a Christian.

There are some things in the film which you have to be
out here in the Middle East to appreciate. When Balian
comes across a pile of crusader heads lying on the sand
after the Christian defeat at the 1187 battle of
Hittin, everyone in the cinema thought of Iraq; here is
the nightmare I face each time I travel to report in
Iraq. Here is the horror that the many Lebanese who
work in Iraq have to confront. Yet there was a
wonderful moment of self-deprecation among the audience
when Saladin, reflecting on his life, says: "Somebody
tried to kill me once in Lebanon."

The house came down. Everyone believed that Massoud
must have inserted this line to make fun of the
Lebanese ability to destroy themselves and - having
lived in Lebanon 29 years and witnessed almost all its
tragedy - I too founds tears of laughter running down
my face.

I suppose that living in Lebanon, among those crusader
castles, does also give an edge to Kingdom of Heaven.
It's said that Scott originally wanted to film in
Lebanon (rather than Spain and Morocco) and to call his
movie Tripoli after the great crusader keep I visited a
few weeks ago. One of the big Christian political
families in Lebanon, the Franjiehs, take their name
from the "Franj", which is what the Arabs called the
crusaders. The Douai family in Lebanon - with whom the
Franjiehs fought

Army Staff Sergeant Charged With Murder

By PATRICK QUINN
The Associated Press
Friday, June 17, 2005

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The U.S. military charged a staff
sergeant from the New York National Guard with
murdering his two commanders at a base outside Baghdad,
in what is believed to be the first case of an American
soldier in Iraq accused of killing his superiors.

The military initially concluded that the June 7 deaths
of Capt. Phillip T. Esposito, of Suffern, N.Y., and 1st
Lt. Louis E. Allen, of Milford, Pa., were caused by a
mortar round.

But this week the military charged Staff Sgt. Alberto
B. Martinez of Troy, N.Y., with two counts of
premeditated murder, according to a statement issued in
Baghdad on Thursday.

Martinez, 37, is a supply specialist with the
Headquarters Company of the 42nd Infantry Division, New
York Army National Guard. Esposito, 30 and the father
of a 1-year-old girl, was company commander and Allen,
34 and a father of four, was a company operations
officer.

The "fragging" incident occurred near Tikrit _ Saddam
Hussein's hometown 80 miles north of Baghdad _ at
Forward Operating Base Danger in what used to be one of
the ousted Iraqi leader's palace on the banks of the
Tigris River.

Fragging is a term used to refer to soldiers killing
their superiors.
