The wages of fundamentalism - Peter Watson International Herald Tribune JUNE 22,2005 - CAMBRIDGE,England For decades,big science-indeed any kind of science - has been led by the United States.There are warning signs,however, that American science is losing its edge,and may even have peaked.One reason is that as religious and political fundamentalism tighten their grip, they are beginning to sap Americas intellectual vitality. By contrast,the political turmoil that has broken out on the other side of the Atlantic shows that Europeans grasp how destructive fundamentalism can be.According to a survey in Physical Review, reported in May 2004, the number of scientific papers published by West European authors had overtaken those by U.S. authors in 2003, whereas in 1983 there were three American authors for every West European. The percentage of patents granted to American scientists has been falling since 1980, from 60.2 percent of the world total to 51.8 percent. In 1989, America trained the same number of science and engineering PhDs as Britain, Germany and France put together; now the United States is 5 percent behind. The number of citations in science journals, hitherto led by American scientists, is now led by Europeans. As battles have raged in Kansas and elsewhere in America over evolution and Genesis, reputable biologists have spoken up in favor of Darwin's theories, but who knows how many students have already been turned off biology by these skirmishes? As a result of fundamentalist opposition, America is already falling behind in cloning and stem cell research, now led by South Korean, Italian and British scientists. In February the New Scientist reported a survey in which fully half the scientists working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said they had been pushed to alter or withdraw scientific findings for political reasons. Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the number of Chinese and Indians traveling to America to study has fallen by more than 50 per cent - they are going to Europe instead. There are now as many Asian PhDs being produced as U.S ones,more and more of them familiar with Europe. Yet history shows that fundamentalism leads only to stagnation and disaster. Look back at the four great eras of fundamentalism in world history. Under the influence of the Israelite zealots in the centuries before Christ, ancient Israel dropped behind the surrounding civilizations both politically and materially, and provoked the Romans, who annihilated them, sparking a diaspora which lasted 2,000 years. Christianity in the Roman Empire led to half a millennium of dark ages, ending only with the rediscovery of Aristotle in the 12th century. Ascetic Buddhist fundamentalism in China from the fourth century to the ninth century resulted in 4,600 monasteries being destroyed, before the Song renaissance released the finest flowering of Chinese civilization. And Islamic fundamentalism beginning in Baghdad around 1067 led to a millennium of backwardness, which still afflicts the Islamic world. By contrast,the very history of modern Europe-the scientific revolution, the Enlightenment, the modernist battles of the 19th century-may be characterized as the victory of rationalism and science over religious dogmatism.Europe is the birthplace of science.It was in the universities of Europe,in the 12th and 13th centuries,that the experiment was conceived and the testing of hypotheses became a rival form of authority to that of the church, creating the accuracy, efficiency and prosperity on which the modern world is founded. Washington and Teheran, Jul. 2, 2005 -- First Iranian President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was said to have been one of the captors of U.S. embassy hostages in Teheran in 1979. Now Ahmadinejad stands accused of being a roving Iranian assassin. It has been revealed from sources in Teheran that in 1979 Ahmadinejad did not wear a beard and that the person seen in the photo is Taqi Mohammadi, a former militant who committed suicide in jail. The supposed AP photo that surfaced after Ahmadinejad's election victory was shopped around by Iran Focus, an anti-regime group with ties to the US Alliance for Democratic Iran, and the neo-con Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD). The still photo has now been supplemented by color video footage showing the Ahmadinejad look-alike Mohammadi. Some of the ex-U.S. hostages who now claim, over 25 years later, that Ahmadinejad was one of their captors, have strong connections to GOP and conservative politics. FDD's principal players include Newt Gingrich, James Woolsey (the friend and supporter of Ahmad Chalabi and his Iraqi National Congress), Gary Bauer, Richard Perle, Cliff May, Zell Miller, Jeane Kirkpatrick, and Tucker Carlson's father, Richard Carlson. Perle, in turn, is a primary supporter of the Iranian exile People's Mujaheddin (Mujaheddin-e-Khalq/MEK), a group designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department and which operates unhindered from U.S.-occupied Iraq. The MEK and its affiliated arm, the National Council of Resistance, have now surface as the likely source of another story claiming that Ahmadinejad was an assassin sent to Vienna in 1989 to kill Kurdish opposition leader Abdul Rahman Ghassemlou. This story was first shopped to a Prague paper, which claimed its source was Hossein Yazdan Panah, and Iranian Kurdish activist based in U.S.-occupied Iraq. The story was then was picked up by Austrian Green Party official Peter Pilz, who claims his source for the story is a mysterious "Witness D," an Iranian journalist based in Paris, a city known as a major operational base for the MEK. (This is very reminiscent of Ahmad Chalabi's "Curveball" source, the congenital liar and drunkard who claimed first hand knowledge of Saddam Hussein's mobile biological weapons labs, charges later proven to be fraudulent). Ahmad Chalabi, now Iraq's Oil Minister, was a math professor at the American University in Beirut in the 1970s and, according to a longtime ABC correspondent in the Middle East, was known as SAVAK's man in Beirut. (SAVAK was the Shah of Iran's feared intelligence service some of whose members were trained by the U.S. and Israel). Anyone who wanted to visit Iraqi Kurdistan in those days had to go see Chalabi, who would then arrange for passage to Iraqi Kurdistan through Iran. But the Bush regime has been particularly reckless. Take for example the triangle Iran, Iraq, the United States. The history is well-known. The first famous CIA intervention anywhere was in Iran, way back in 1953. At that time, Iran had a prime minister named Mohamed Mossadegh, a secular middle-class politician who had the audacity to nationalize Iranian oil. The shah went into exile. Great Britain and the U.S. were quite unhappy about this and they backed, indeed inspired, a military coup to arrest Mossadegh and restore the shah to his throne. From then on, the shah's Iran became a close ally of the United States. Shah Reza Pahlevi's regime was authoritarian and very repressive but this didn't bother the U.S. since he was a pillar of pro-U.S. forces in the Middle East.Finally, the shah's regime was overthrown by a popular uprising in 1979 and the shah went into exile once again. This time the dominant forces turned out to be not secular nationalists but Islamic militants led by the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. An Islamic republic was proclaimed. And within a year, Iranian militants seized the U.S. embassy and kept those they found there prisoners for 444 days. The U.S., needless to say, was quite unhappy once again. Iran proclaimed the U.S. the Great Satan, and the U.S. in turn now considered Iran a total enemy. President Carter's attempt to liberate the U.S. embassy prisoners by force turned out to be a fiasco. And President Reagan got them out only by making a secret deal, returning frozen Iranian assets for their release.The U.S. decided the best way to handle the Iranians was to encourage the president of Iraq, one Saddam Hussein, to invade Iran, which he did in 1980. Iran is of course a largely Shia Muslim country. And Iraq has a very large number of Shia Muslims who however have been kept from participation in power by Sunni Arab politicians since Iraq's creation as a modern sovereign state. In 1983, Pres. Reagan sent one Donald Rumsfeld as a special envoy to meet Saddam Hussein, to encourage him in his war efforts, to offer him direct and indirect forms of assistance (including some elements of biological warfare), to remove Iraq from the U.S. list of states aiding terrorist groups, and in general to coddle Saddam. The Iran-Iraq war lasted eight years, was extremely costly to both sides in both casualties and money, and finally ended in exhaustion, with the troops back at the starting-point. It was a military truce, but of course the political enmity persisted.Saddam Hussein, as we know, found it difficult to repay the debts he had contracted in order to conduct this war, especially Iraq's large debts to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. He decided to cancel the debts and satisfy long-standing nationalist claims in one fell swoop by invading Kuwait in 1990. Now at last the U.S. turned against Saddam Hussein, leading a U.N.-sanctioned coalition to oust Iraq from Kuwait with, among other things, the tacit support of Iran. The war ended with various kinds of double crosses. Saddam had sent much of his air force to Iran to keep it safe from U.S. bombing. After the war ended, Iran refused to return the planes. The Shia in Iraq rose up in rebellion against Saddam Hussein during the Gulf War, but the U.S. refused to help them after the truce with Saddam, although the U.S. eventually did enforce a no-fly zone over Shia areas - too late, however, to prevent Saddam from his revenge on the Shia rebels.Everyone was a bit unhappy with the de facto truce betwen 1991 and 2001. The neo-cons in the U.S. felt that the U.S. had been humiliated by the fact that Saddam remained in power. Saddam was unhappy because of a U.S.-led economic boycott and U.N.-decreed limitations on Iraq's sovereignty concerning the sale of oil. Iraqi Shia (and Kurds) were unhappy because Saddam was still in power, and the U.S. had let them down. And Iran was unhappy because Saddam was still in power, because the Iraqi Shia were still suffering, and because the U.S. was still too much a force in the region.When September 11 occurred, the neo-cons seized the opportunity to get Bush to focus on a war on Iraq. As we know, the invasion would finally occur in 2003, resulting in the overthrow of Saddam. At the time, George W. Bush denounced the "axis of evil" - a trio of Iraq, Iran, and North Korea. The U.S. had now decided to be against both the Iraqi and the Iranian regimes simultaneously, but to take on Iraq militarily first. It is quite clear that in 2003

Key members of the House and Senate vowed to take even broader steps soon. Last week's 5 to 4 decision has drawn a swift and visceral backlash from an unusual coalition of conservatives concerned about property rights and liberals worried about the effect on poor people, whose property is often vulnerable to condemnation because it does not generate a lot of revenue. The House measure, which passed 231 to 189, would deny federal funds to any city or state project that used eminent domain to force people to sell their property to make way for a profit-making project such as a hotel or mall. Historically, eminent domain has been used mainly for public purposes such as highways or airports. The measure, an amendment to an appropriations bill, would apply to funds administered by the departments of Transportation, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) and Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said they will push for a more inclusive measure that would apply to all federal funds. A fact sheet said under the bill the locality or state would lose any federal funds that would contribute in any way to the project the property would be taken for. The vote marks the latest of several congressional moves to curb a judiciary that some lawmakers consider out of touch with average Americans. It came as conservative groups attacked a month-old bipartisan deal that ended Senate filibusters of several appellate court nominees and as some legislators anxiously watched for a possible Supreme Court retirement. Activists said the 5 to 4 ruling will be a centerpiece of their efforts to motivate conservatives and libertarians for a confirmation fight after a vacancy opens on the court.
