About a year later,a colleague suggested that the attacks were orchestrated by our owngovernment. Afew months later, another colleague suggested that I look at a websitecontaining the massive 9/11 timeline created by Paul Thompson. Thistimeline, I found, contained an enormous number of reports, all frommainstream sources, that contradicted the official account. This started aprocess that led me to publish The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questionsabout the Bush Administration and 9/11, which summarized much of theevidence that had been discovered by previous researchers---evidence, Iconcluded, that provided a "strong prima facie case for officialcomplicity."In a criminal trial, once the prosecution has presented its initial case,the defense asks the judge for a dismissal on the grounds that a primafacie case for guilt has not been presented. However, if the judgedeclares that such a case has been made, then the defense must rebut thevarious elements in the prosecutions case. The defense cannot simplyignore the prosecutions case by stating that it is "too outrageous to bedignified by a response." If the defense fails to offer a convincingrebuttal, the prima facie case is presumed to be conclusive.The Bush administration responded to the charges against it as a defenseattorney would, declaring them too outrageous to be taken seriously.President Bush himself advised people, perhaps especially reporters, notto tolerate "outrageous conspiracy theories." What the president reallymeant is that people should not tolerate any outrageous conspiracytheories except his own, according to which 19 Arab Muslims defeated themost powerful and sophisticated defense system in history and alsodefeated the laws of physics, bringing down three steel-frame building ina way that perfectly mimicked controlled demolition.In any case, what was needed at that stage was someone to play the role ofthe judge, determining, from an impartial perspective, whether a primafacie case for the guilt of the Bush administration had been made.This role should have been played by the press. Only 144,000 private sector jobs were created, each one of which was in domestic services. Fifty-six thousand jobs were created in professional and business services, about half of which are in administrative and waste services. Thirty-eight thousand jobs were created in education and health services, almost all of which are in health care and social assistance. Nineteen thousand jobs were created in leisure and hospitality, almost all of which are waitresses and bartenders. Membership associations and organizations created 10,000 jobs, and repair and maintenance created 4,000 jobs. Financial activities created 16,000 jobs. This most certainly is not the labor market profile of a First World country, much less a superpower. Where are the jobs for this years crop of engineering and science graduates? U.S. manufacturing lost another 24,000 jobs in June. A country that doesnt manufacture doesnt need many engineers. And the few engineering jobs available go to foreigners. Readers have sent me employment listings from U.S. software development firms. The listings are discriminatory against American citizens. One ad from a company in New Jersey that is a developer for many companies, including Oracle, specifies that the applicant must have a TN visa. A TN or Trade NAFTA visa is what is given to Mexicans and Canadians who are willing to work in the United States at below prevailing wages. Another ad from a software consulting company based in Omaha, Neb., specifies it wants software engineers who are H-1B transferees. What this means is that the firm is advertising for foreigners already in the United States who have H-1B work visas. The reason the U.S. firms specify that they have employment opportunities only for foreigners who hold work visas is because the foreigners will work for less than the prevailing U.S. salary. Gentle reader, when you read allegations that there is a shortage of engineers in America, necessitating the importation of foreigners to do the work, you are reading a bald-faced lie. If there were a shortage of American engineers, employers would not word their job listings to read that no American need apply and that they are offering jobs only to foreigners holding work visas. What kind of country gives preference to foreigners over its own engineering graduates? What kind of country destroys the job market for its own citizens? How much longer will parents shell out $100,000 for a college education for a son or daughter who ends up employed as a bartender, waitress or temp? It was a brutal battle on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Complete with arm twisting, badgering, and backroom deal making, the final vote landed in favor of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). At 12:03 a.m. on Wednesday, July 28, the pro-CAFTA forces pushed through a razor-thin victory of 217-215. Designed to bring about continued job loss, increased illegal immigration C but more importantly C the continued erosion of American independence to a faceless international bureaucracy, CAFTA is simply the dress rehearsal to a larger and more destructive agreement: the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The FTAA, if passed, will encompass 34 countries of the Western Hemisphere, and has been correctly referred to as "NAFTA on steroids." However, there is great reason to be optimistic. This hard-fought CAFTA battle, even in defeat, has greatly improved our chances for defeating the FTAA. The closeness and fierceness of the CAFTA battle points to the growing opposition to these "free trade" pacts. Now the momentum is swinging our way. The CAFTA vote made many Americans wonder what's driving this. Others should. We can help them. Consider: "House and Ways Committee Chairman Bill Thomas, R-Calif., at one point declared, 'This is not a major trade vote. It's a major political vote.'" The companies have yet to admit that no scheme for providing sustainable energy can rely on petroleum. Sustainability is big in corporate America today. The word, that is. Once an arcane term used chiefly by foresters and agricultural researchers, sustainable has become the label of choice that executives use to describe their businesses. Perhaps the most laughable of the newly sustainable corporations are the oil companies. Pumping a finite resource like oil out of the ground must be one of the least sustainable endeavors on the planet. But this doesn't bother the oil industry, which knows a powerful public relations word when it sees one. The most recent ConocoPhillips annual report has a section titled Technology Achieving Long-term Sustainability, and the CEO writes of the company's sustainable growth plan. Annual reports from ChevronTexaco and ExxonMobil speak of sustainable development. And BP and Shell issue reports on the sustainability of their operations. There are even auditors willing, for a fee, to vouch for the statements in these sustainability reports. All this when Arthur R. Green, lecturer for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and former chief geoscientist of ExxonMobil, says world oil production is nearing its peak. The history of U.S. oil production is instructive. Domestic oil output steadily rose until it peaked in 1970. Since then production has declined despite the technological know-how of domestic oil companies and the considerable incentive of high prices. Domestic oil production in 2003 was less than 60 percent of its 1970 level. To meet our demand we import foreign oil. More than 56 percent of what we used in 2003 came from other countries, and the proportion increases every year. Increase, taper off, then decrease -- world oil production will follow the same pattern. Some experts think world output is very near its peak already, while others say the peak will arrive sometime between now and 2050. Five complications make this grim picture even bleaker. First, the world's largest oil reserves tend to be in countries with unstable governments. Unrest can disrupt supply. Second, insiders have been suspicious for some time about oil reserve figures claimed by certain Middle Eastern countries. In 1987 the United Arab Emirates claimed reserves of 33 billion barrels; in 1988 they claimed 98 billion barrels, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Iraq and some other Middle Eastern countries also reported similarly implausible sudden increases. These figures probably owe more to politics than sound science. Third, China, until 1993 a net oil exporter, now imports more than 40 percent of its oil and is the world's third largest importer, after the United States and Japan. With 1.3 billion people, one-fifth of the world's population, and an economy that has quadrupled since 1978, China is developing a world-class thirst for oil. China and the rest of Asia now consume about as much oil as the United States. Fourth, as demand climbs past supply, already high oil prices will rise even higher. The energy crisis of the 1970s showed how sensitive overall inflation, interest rates and the stock market are to increased oil prices. The oil squeeze will not just raise the cost of energy. It will affect the entire economy. Fifth, even as oil becomes more scarce, development of replacement fuels remains on the back burner. Do not expect the oil companies to do more than token research on other fuels. True, they do have experience taking on large projects and have sophisticated ways of analyzing risk. But their investment and expertise are in petroleum. If an oil company makes a genuine sustainability breakthrough -- figuring out, for example, how to make hydrogen efficiently with solar power -- you can be sure the company will publicize this rather than promote the pleasant fiction that its current operations are sustainable. The reality is that no scheme for providing energy sustainably can rely on petroleum. But do not expect to hear that from oil executives. Bush-puppet Frist in th ebag to big pharma every bit as much Bush, comes out to announce that he now supports more stem-cell research. The Washington media latches on to this as an excuse to talk more about the divisive abortion issue; pushing off the cablenews and into the back pages the story about John Bolton. Just a day after the State Department admits Bolton lied in documents filed with the Senate, Bush recess-appoints Bolton to the United Nations, unConstitutionally evading the Senate's advise consent role. The imperialist warfreak necon-clique's Bolton didn't tell the Senate he had been questioned by the State Department's INspector General regarding the forged uranium documents that the White House used to lie its way into the Iraq war. Then later Friday night, the Senate suddenly renewed the USA PATRIOT Act by unanimous consent. The Senate's version of the bill is not quite as bad as the House version passed last week. Like the House, they made 14 of the 16 expiring provisions permanent; but the Senate renewed the other two for four rather than 10 more years. There are a few new light reporting requirments for the Justice Department, ability to challenge some business-record seizure orders, and a slightly higher hurdle for some setting up wiretaps and seizing business records.
