State-run television channel France 3 and the press group of the French manufacturer of Dassault planes take part in staging the show. The Atlantist circles of the Union for a Popular Movement (UPM), the main party of the French right, currently in power, are developing the topic of the “ war on terror” as their electoral argument in the French media, which are particularly benevolent with the above mentioned circles. The hypothesis of a possible Islamic attack of big magnitude in Paris burst into the French media scene, mainly benefiting two people: Pierre Lellouche, a UPM Parliament member for Paris and President of NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly, as well as Nicolas Sarkozy, French Interior Minister and [candidate for the French presidency]. On September 6, 2005, the public channel France 3 of the French television repeated a documentary that it had already broadcast in September 2002 entitled Terrorism, the nuclear threat (Terrorisme, la menace nucléaire) by Hesi Carmel, Jean-Marc Gonin and Richard Puech for France 3 and for the Capa agency. Jean-Marc Gonin is a journalist with the news daily Le Figaro and Richard Puech is a documentary maker who works for the Capa agency. For his part, Hesi Carmel is an independent Israeli journalist but also a former deputy director of the Mossad, Israel’s secret service. The documentary includes testimonies by US personalities, especially that of former senator Sam Nunn, co- president of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a very active organization that speaks of a terrorist threat of nuclear nature. The Nuclear Threat Initiative has organized several nuclear attack drills near the NATO headquarters [1]. The documentary did not include anything new and it had provoked different reactions in the French media when it was first broadcast. Let us recall that it was first aired at a time when Washington was trying to convince the world public opinion of the existence of a threat: the alleged Iraqi weapons of mass destruction that terrorist groups could obtain. However, the day after the material was broadcast, Le Monde, the reference newspaper of the French elite, made an extensive coverage of the documentary. The television reporter of the news daily, Dominique Dhombres, praised the research work of the three authors, although he described it as too alarmist, and affirmed that “after having watched the documentary by Hesi Carmel, Jean-Marc Gonin and Richard Puech broadcast on Tuesday night by France 3, you may ask yourself how come a nuclear attack has not taken place yet”, [2], a remark that is particularly appropriate considering that it has not taken place after the documentary was made. In the same edition, Le Monde revealed that the French Interior Minister [SARKOZY] was working on a new anti-terrorist legislation. Thus, a threat was being used as a way to justify the solution. Soon, it was known that the main guidelines of this legislation would be presented during a special television program on the “terrorist threat” in France that would be broadcast, once more, by the channel France 3 as part of the program Pièce à conviction. On that occasion, this program, which is normally in the second part of the night programming, was rescheduled for a prime time edition, that is, with the largest audience, on September 26, 2005. “The Terrorist Threat” On September 26, 2005, the television program “Pièce à conviction” had Nicolas Sarkozy and anti-terrorist judge Jean-Louis Bruguière as guests.. It was only the fourth time that the program was aired in prime time after it was launched in October 2001 and its guests were Nicolas Sarkozy and anti-terrorist judge Jean-Louis Bruguière. The program was recorded on September 21st, 2005, and the French Interior Minister used it to introduce his law that significantly toughens the then existing texts. He put a particular emphasis on the fact that “there is a terrorist threat on France, of a very high level” and said that a terrorist group had just been dismantled. However, there had not been any arrests before the program was recorded. The arrests took place the morning after the program was aired, something that – in a very appropriate time – put Islamic terrorism in the centre of attention. The forged documents may have surfaced in Italy, but they directly impacted U.S. foreign policy, with serious repercussions. The President used the uranium forgeries as evidence that Iraq was producing nuclear weapons. Silvio Berlusconi's government has admitted that agents of Sismi, the Italian military intelligence service, tracked the movements in London of Rocco Martino, an ex-informer, in the autumn of 2001. President George Bush cited the uranium claim in his State of the Union address in January 2003. But as soon as the US passed the documents to the UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, it denounced them as obvious fakes. The ensuing controversy in America has now resulted in charges against a top former White House official, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, and a continuing investigation into Karl Rove, Mr Bush's closest aide.But while the US has admitted the uranium claim should never have been made, Tony Blair's government, which first made the allegation public in its September 2002 dossier on Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction, still insists it was supported by "separate intelligence".Britain has always refused to disclose the nature of this information, even to the IAEA, because it was provided by a "foreign service".In October 2001, Sismi sent its British and American counterparts a dossier on alleged Iraqi attempts to buy uranium from Niger. Whether Rocco Martino delivered it to MI6 headquarters in Vauxhall Cross, as some Italian reports claim, is not clear.But Vincent Cannistraro, a senior former official with the CIA, told The Independent on Sunday that "some of the text of the 2001 report showed up in the later [forged] documents."There seems to be a common source ... it seems that the [separate] British intelligence came from the same false and discredited source."A public row in Italy involving the head of Sismi, General Nicolo Pollari, has brought to light much information on the Niger uranium claims. Sismi has acknowledged informing other intelligence services, including the CIA, in a letter on 15 October 2001, of "evidence of intelligence" on Iraqi efforts to procure uranium from Niger.The information came from a woman who worked at the Niger embassy in Rome, given the code name of La Signora by Sismi. She also provided Niger's cryptographic codes and other internal documents.The CIA questioned the report, and General Pollari says he also recorded his doubts in writing at the time. But he does not appear to have told his counterparts in other countries, where La Signora was still "a reliable source".Sismi says it was next involved in 2002, when Mr Martino began offering the fake Niger documents to anyone willing to buy them. His first client is reported to have been the French intelligence service, but in October 2002 they were given to the American embassy in Rome by Panorama, a Berlusconi-owned magazine he had approached.What happened next is the subject of furious argument in Italy. General Pollari says he warned other countries about the forgeries, including Britain.In spring 2003, according to his account, Mr Martino approached the British embassy in Brussels, saying an "associate" could provide information on Iraq, Niger and uranium. The software, called Extended Copy Protection (or XCP) uses rootkit techniques similar to those used by viruses, Trojan horse programs, and spyware to hide the fact that it is installed from the user.The discovery, by security expert Mark Russinovich (whose outfit, Sysinternals.com, makes several free Windows utilities I find invaluable in diagnosing spyware infestations), details how Sony uses commercial software that automatically installs itself when you put a music CD in a Windows PC's CD drive. Russinovich's own anti-rootkit software, Rootkit Revealer, as well as the Blacklight rootkit detection utility (made by F-Secure, an antivirus company), now detect the software used by Sony, which was licensed from a British firm called First 4 Internet.The bigger question people have got to ask is, does Sony not respect the integrity of the computers of its customers? This cavalier act of sneaking software onto PCs not only violates our own Prime Directive -- it's our PC, dammit -- but threatens the entire music industry. After all, if you suspect that a commercial CD will install software secretly, which you won't be able to remove and which, itself, may increase the already-great security problems of your Windows PC, would you continue to buy CDs? I'll tell you right now, I won't. I'd much rather buy an unrestricted copy of a song electronically, using iTunes, or Rhapsody, or one of the other music services that offer this feature, than take a chance that some music disc will stick some hidden files in my Windows folder, which I can't see or remove.Sony has dealt itself a serious blow, and the best thing it -- and the rest of the music publishers -- can do right now is condemn this practice, apologize to the customers that were affected, provide a method to get this junk off affected PCs, and make declarations that they will never, ever do this again.I don't think they will. And if they don't, I simply won't buy CDs anymore. Period. From any publisher. And I recommend that you don't, either. As a fan of music who respects the need for artists to make a living, and a security-savvy PC user, I'm incensed that Sony -- any company -- would think it's OK to do this. It's not. Multiple security sources are confirming the existence of spyware in the form of rootkits on Sony's music CDs. This behavior is unethical in the eyes of many and the legality may be questionable as well. Editor's Note: One of the biggest issues today is protecting computers from spyware. How can users do that when something so simple as listening to a music CD can put the computer at risk? Tell us your thoughts on WebProWorld.The first point will be to define rootkits. F-Secure said this about it on their blog: Rootkit is technology that hides software from the user and security software. This kind of technology is normally used by malware authors that want their presence to remain undetected in the system as long as possible. DRM software is not malicious but it has other reasons for hiding from the user. DRM software restricts the user's ability to make copies of a record and for that reason uses technology that prevents removal and modification of the software. F-Secure went on to say Sony BMG is using the rootkit-based DRM on some CDs sold in the U.S. and the system may have been in use since March of 2005. The real irritating part is even when one reads the End User License Agreement, there's no mention of software being installed on the computer. It makes little sense for “Arab and African Muslim immigrants,” as described by the Associated Press, to burn down schools, nurseries, and shopping centers in their own neighborhoods, although of course likewise things happened in America (i.e., the Los Angeles riot and earlier civil unrest in urban America). However, the fact the French police tear gassed the Mosque de Bousquets during Laylat al-Qadr (the holiest night in Ramadan) as an act of provocation might have something to do with the subsequent violence. Merkel’s ascension is important because she has championed “a strong transatlantic partnership and German-American friendship,” in other words cozying up to the neocons. Recall how vehemently the neocons accused the French and Germans of “pro-Arab appeasement” and the standard threadbare canard, antisemitism, primarily due to the fact Jacques Chirac and Gerhard Schroeder opposed the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq. If the neocons and their yahoo operatives (think the dirty trickster Donald Segretti’s understudy, Karl Rove) can fix elections in the United States, it should be a piece of cake in Europe. A bit of violence blamed on Muslims sure the heck doesn’t hurt.
