-Caveat Lector- back to anwr.org 24 Reasons to Really Support ANWR Yesterday, the House GOP leaders stated they would not include a provision to allow responsible oil exploration in the House Budget Reconciliation Bill soon to be debated in the House. A group of 24 self-described moderate Republicans, led by Rep. Charles Bass of New Hampshire, signed a letter stating they would not support the Budget Bill with an ANWR provision in it. Most of those Republicans are from the northeastern states. These moderates have gone against the House leadership and wishes of the Chairman of the House Resources Committee Richard Pombo (R-CA) who all support the ANWR provision. Also left out of the House bill was a provision to support Outer Continental Shelf gas exploration. The ANWR provision was passed last week in the Senate which has traditionally been the stumbling block for ANWR. The Senate ANWR provision prevailed 51-48 votes. It is considered by Senate leadership as a major provision in the bill. The Senate Budget Reconciliation Bill will be merged with the House version of the bill in Conference Committee and it is expected ANWR will be retained in the final bill. The Senate Resources Chairman Pete Dominici (R-NM) as well as Alaska Senators Stevens and Murkowski were adamant that the ANWR provision must in the final bill. The House is likely to vote on the Budget Reconciliation Bill this afternoon and the compromise language will come out of the joint Conference Committee probably sometime in December. These moderate republicans spent much of Wednesday threatening their leadership over the ANWR provision. All signed a letter copied below stating their opposition to ANWR. Looking at the home states of this breakaway group one sees a very typical pattern. Of the 14 states represented only 4 produce any oil or gas and the total production from those four states (NY, IL, PA, MI) is less than of 1% of the total US national production. This is counter to their petroleum consumption which totals over 236 million gallons of petroleum a day. As noted above it is interesting to note that the moderate- republicans mostly hail from Northeastern states. Heating oil is the number one resource used to heat homes in the Northeast. Hypocritically offshore eco-friendly wind farms projects have also famously been sued by NIMBYies in court in NE States leaving energy options slim with scant efficient use of solar and great opposition to nuclear and coal power. The irony comes in Northeastern Congressmens demands for billions of dollars of fuel oil subsidies to be handed out to survive their cold winters. As Tara Sweeney of Alaskas Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC) said at a recent press conference, Its 30 below zero in Kaktovik (ANWRs only community) today and these moderates - who are preventing my Inupiat Eskimos from using oil and gas on their own private lands in ANWR - are pleading for heating oil subsidies for their constituents in New England. Such actions are appalling and offensive to my people. The other states concerned, for example Minnesota - Rep. Ramstad and Kennedy -produces no oil or gas and yet heats 68% of its homes with natural gas. It consumes over 14.3 million gallons of petroleum a day as well as relying on imports to feed its two refineries. Similarly Rep. Sensenbrenners state of Wisconsin produces no oil or gas and yet consumes 14.4 million gallons of petroleum a day and relies on natural gas for 66% of its home heating fuel. Rep Dave Reicherts home state of Washington is a direct beneficiary of Alaskan Arctic Oil with nearly half of all Alaskan oil being refined in Washington and over $3,761,850,000 worth of investment having been made in Washington directly from oil development in the Arctic over the past 30 years. Tucker’s prose—first hand, folksy and colorful—will introduce you to the littleknown arena of the Bilderberg elite. This volume is a memorable and panoramic journey that will lay bare the realities behind modern-day international power politics in a way that you’ve never seen before. And the book includes several representative lists of Bilderberg membership over the past several years, more than 80 fascinating on-the-spot photographs of the Bilderbergers in action and photo reproductions of actual Bilderberg documents secured by Tucker. Plus a fascinating Foreword by AFP correspondent Christopher Bollyn who’s accompanied Tucker on a number of his journeys abroad to cover Bilderberg. There’s also an Afterword by Willis A. GOP memo touts new terror attack as way to reverse party's decline By DOUG THOMPSONCapitol Hill Bluehttp://www.capitolhillblue.com/artman/publish/printer_7639.shtmlNov 10, 2005, 06:19 A confidential memo circulating among senior Republican leaders suggests that a new attack by terrorists on U.S. soil could reverse the sagging fortunes of President George W. Bush as well as the GOP and "restore his image as a leader of the American people."The closely-guarded memo lays out a list of scenarios to bring the Republican party back from the political brink, including a devastating attack by terrorists that could “validate” the President’s war on terror and allow Bush to “unite the country” in a “time of national shock and sorrow.”The memo says such a reversal in the President's fortunes could keep the party from losing control of Congress in the 2006 midterm elections.GOP insiders who have seen the memo admit it’s a risky strategy and point out that such scenarios are “blue sky thinking” that often occurs in political planning sessions.“The President’s popularity was at an all-time high following the 9/11 attacks,” admits one aide. “Americans band together at a time of crisis.”Other Republicans, however, worry that such a scenario carries high risk, pointing out that an attack might suggest the President has not done enough to protect the country.“We also have to face the fact that many Americans no longer trust the President,” says a longtime GOP strategist. “That makes it harder for him to become a rallying point.”The memo outlines other scenarios, including:--Capture of Osama bin Laden (or proof that he is dead);--A drastic turnaround in the economy;--A "successful resolution" of the Iraq war.GOP memos no longer talk of “victory” in Iraq but use the term “successful resolution.”“A successful resolution would be us getting out intact and civil war not breaking out until after the midterm elections,” says one insider. The memo circulates as Tuesday’s disastrous election defeats have left an already dysfunctional White House in chaos, West Wing insiders say, with shouting matches commonplace and the blame game escalating into open warfare.“This place is like a high-school football locker room after the team lost the big game,” grumbles one Bush administration aide. “Everybody’s pissed and pointing the finger at blame at everybody else.”Republican gubernatorial losses in Virginia and New Jersey deepened rifts between the Bush administration and Republicans who find the President radioactive. Arguments over whether or not the President should make a last-minute appearance in Virginia to try and help the sagging campaign fortunes of GOP candidate Jerry Kilgore raged until the minute Bush arrived at the rally in Richmond Monday night.“Cooler heads tried to prevail,” one aide says. “Most knew an appearance by the President would hurt Kilgore rather than help him but (Karl) Rove rammed it through, convincing Bush that he had enough popularity left to make a difference.”Bush didn’t have any popularity left. Overnight tracking polls showed Kilgore dropped three percentage points after the President’s appearance and Democrat Tim Kaine won on Tuesday.Conservative Pennsylvania Republican Senator Rick Santorum told radio talk show host Don Imus Wednesday that he does not want the President's help and will stay away from a Bush rally in his state on Friday. The losses in Virginia and New Jersey, coupled with a resounding defeat of ballot initiatives backed by GOP governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in California have set off alarm klaxons throughout the demoralized Republican party. Pollsters privately tell GOP leaders that unless they stop the slide they could easily lose control of the House in the 2006 midterm elections and may lose the Senate as well.“In 30 years of sampling public opinion, I’ve never seen such a freefall in public support,” admits one GOP pollster.Democratic pollster Geoffrey Garin says the usual tricks tried by Republicans no longer work."None of their old tricks worked," he says.Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.) admits the GOP is a party mired in its rural base in a country that's becoming less and less rural."You play to your rural base, you pay a price," he says. "Our issues blew up in our face."As Republican political strategists scramble to find a message – any message – that will ring true with voters, GOP leaders in Congress admit privately that control of their party by right-wing extremists makes their recovery all but impossible.“We’ve made our bed with these people,” admits an aide to House Speaker Denny Hastert. “Now it’s the morning after and the hangover hurts like hell.” © Copyright 2005 Capitol Hill Blue www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER == CTR
[CTRL] Fwd: US Could Invade ... Saudi Arabia
-Caveat Lector- Begin forwarded message:From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Date: November 14, 2005 3:29:14 AM PSTTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: US Could Invade ... Saudi ArabiaU.S. fears prospect of Saudi coup, weighs invasion plans SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM http://www.worldtribune.com/worldtribune/05/front2453676.157638889.html Tuesday, November 1, 2005 WASHINGTON — The United States has raised the prospect of a military invasion of Saudi Arabia. The House Armed Services Committee considered the possibility of a Saudi coup and U.S. response during a hearing on Oct. 26.Saudi Arabia, with 200,000 military and National Guard troops, is the largest oil producer and exporter, with an output of nine million barrels of oil per day, according to Middle East Newsline. The Arab kingdom is the third largest supplier of oil to the United States, with more than 1.55 million barrels per day. The scenario was outlined by Michael O'Hanlon, a senior fellow of the Brookings Institution, who cited a Saudi coup as one of several threats to the United States. "How should the United States respond if a coup, presumably fundamentalist in nature, overthrows the royal family in Saudi Arabia?" O'Hanlon asked. "Such a result would raise the specter of major disruption to the oil economy." The response could include the deployment of three U.S. Army divisions backed by fighter-jets and airborne early-warning and alert aircraft. In all, the U.S.-led mission could include up to 300,000 troops. Congressional sources said the House hearing, which focused on future threats in the Middle East and other regions, marked increasing U.S. concern of Saudi instability. They said the open hearing echoed a series of briefings on Saudi and Gulf Arab instability given by non-government analysts to the State Department, Defense Department and National Security Council since 2002. The House committee was told that U.S. concern of a Saudi coup appears greater than ever. O'Hanlon said such a coup would also destabilize Pakistan, a nuclear power since 1998. "This type of scenario has been discussed for at least two decades and remains of concern today — perhaps even more so — given the surge of terrorist violence in Saudi Arabia in recent years as well as the continued growth and hostile ideology of Al Qaida along with the broader Wahabi movement," O'Hanlon said. In his testimony, O'Hanlon envisioned a Saudi coup as resulting in the emergence of what he termed a fundamentalist regime intent on acquiring nuclear weapons. Another prospect was that the new regime would seek to disrupt the oil market. "Indeed, it might be feasible not to do anything at first, and hope that the new regime gradually realized the benefits of reintegrating Saudi Arabia at least partially into the global oil economy," O'Hanlon said. "But in the end the United States and other western countries might consider using force." O'Hanlon envisioned a U.S.-led military operation designed to seize Saudi oil wells, located along the eastern coast. Washington and its allies would place the proceeds from Saudi oil sales into escrow for a future pro-Western government in Riyad. A U.S.-led military force of 300,000 would be required to secure the entire Saudi Arabia, O'Hanlon said. He said about 10,000 troops could capture eastern Saudi Arabia, which contains virtually all of the kingdom's oil wells. But more than 100,000 additional troops would be required to protect the wells and other vital infrastructure. "An operation to overthrow the new Saudi regime and gradually stabilize a country of the size in question would probably require in the vicinity of 300,000 troops, using standard sizing criteria," O'Hanlon said. "So in fact a coastal strategy, while easier in some ways and perhaps less bloody in the initial phases, could be fully half as large and might last much longer." www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list. Relations TaintedNew confidence crisis with U.S. / Hanan GreenbergU.S. halts supply of electro-optical equipment to IDF after Israel did not report loss of hundreds of night vision devices defined as 'strategic weapons'Full StoryAn U.S. embassy official met with an Israeli foreign ministry official in Jerusalem several days ago, where he informed him that the American Foreign Ministry has requested the embassy to launch an investigation into the matter. According to American sources, the military copters currently serve the drug mafia in the South American country. Top diplomatic sources fear that this incident will once again heat-up tensions between Israel and the U.S. and cloud the strategic dialogue between the two countries, which is scheduled to renew in November, after talks were suspended for more than a year-and-a-half. Kosher deal went sour The dubious affair, which was already investigated by the Israeli Defense Ministry, and later turned over to the hands of the police, was uncovered about two years ago. Investigators revealed that the Defense Ministry signed a deal with an Israeli company three years ago, contracting it to negotiate the sale of five IAF helicopters for a sum of USD 100,000 per aircraft. The ministry permitted the choppers, of a MD 500 Defender model, be sold either to the Mexican federal police, or to the Spain firefighters department. However, contrary to the terms of the license, the copters ended up in Columbia, by way of Canadian mediators. A Defense Ministry spokeswoman said in response that "after suspicions were raised that an illicit exchange took place, the ministry launched an initial investigation into the matter last year." "According to instructions of the chief prosecutor, the case was handed over to the police in 2004," she added. Sources at the Defense Ministry refused to comment on the matter.
