Regarding the cuts to operational capacity of the Coast Guard and the inadequacy of Customs, James Ridgeway writes: This is a dream setup for any arms or dope dealer, and that's exactly what the United Arab Emirates is all about.The ties between its top officials and royal family with the Taliban and Al Qaeda go back at least a decade. The UAE is not only the center of financial dealings in the Persian Gulf, it is switching central for dope and arms dealing. The dope comes out of Afghanistan into the UAE where tax monies are collected and used to buy arms, which were sent back in for the Taliban. Some of this money is thought to have helped finance the 9-11 attacks. A money trail is set forth in the government's filings in the Moussaoui case. Long at the center of this operation is the mysterious Russian arms dealer, Victor Bout His planes are registered to various companies all operating out of the United Arab Emirates. In fact, the United Arab Emirates have been viewed as hub for trade going and coming to Afghanistan, with drugs coming from Afghanistan on their way to the West, and weapons from Bout, going back. While transportation was via Bout's different air cargo interests, it also involved the Afghan state airlines, called Ariana Airlines. The airline was controlled by Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda agents masquerading as Ariana employees flew out of Afghanistan, through Sharjah, one of the emirates, and on to points west. Bout, naturally enough for someone beyond the reach of any arm of justice, has been a wildly successful contractor to United States forces in Iraq. Last month, Douglas Farah wrote of Bout's Pentagon connections: Wisconsin Democratic Senator Russell Feingold first raised the issue of Bout's coalition military contracts on May 18, 2004, in a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. Feingold asked then-Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and then-Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage about reports of U.S. military links to Bout's companies. It took Wolfowitz eight months to respond. In a January 31, 2005, letter to Feingold, Wolfowitz acknowledged that "both the U.S. Army and the Coalition Provisional Authority (in Iraq) did conduct business with companies that, in turn, subcontracted work to second tier suppliers who leased aircraft owned by companies associated with Mr. Bout Although we are aware of a few companies that are connected to Mr. Bout, most notably Air Bas and Jetline, we suspect Mr. Bout has other companies or enterprises unknown to the Government." In fact, as the Los Angeles Times first reported in 2004, Bout aircraft were in constant motion into Iraq after the invasion. A single Bout company, Irbis, flew more than 140 flights into Iraq for the U.S. military and its contractors by the end of 2004. Over a period of eight years, the United States government has repeatedly asked the UAE to shut down Bout's businesse "as required by UN charter," but Dubai only ventures that it will "study" the issue. Of course: not only are the UAE's rulers Bout's business partners, but they can see the US winking at them even as it makes the "demand." So there we have it, and a familiar narrative it is, too. MI6 has agreed an out-of-court settlement with the men, who said they were duped into taking part in the experiments and had waited years to learn the truth. The men experienced vivid hallucinogenic trips when given the drugs. One recalled seeing distorted Salvador Dali-style faces and cracks in people's faces. MI6 is also paying the cost of the men's lawsuit, which alleged assault. Don Webb, a former airman, said yesterday: I feel vindicated; this has been a classic cover-up for years. They took a liberty. The LSD experiments were conducted in 1953 and 1954 by scientists working for MI6 who were trying to discover a truth drug to compel prisoners to confess. MI6, then led by Sir John Sinclair, was worried that the Russians had a secret drug to brainwash cold war enemies. The service had seen captured American servicemen confessing to crimes during the Korean war and calling for a US surrender. A Hungarian dissident had admitted to crimes he did not commit. MI6's counterparts at the CIA also did LSD experiments on men without their knowledge to try to control their minds. Both agencies finally concluded that LSD could not be used to manipulate people. One scientist involved in the trials wrote that the experiments were stopped ... when it was reported that in a few people it might produce suicidal tendencies. The trials were described as tentative and inadequately controlled in one official document. The amount of compensation paid to three servicemen in the lawsuit is not being disclosed by MI6 or the men; Alan Care, the men's lawyer, called it modest. One man did not wish to be named. But Mr Webb and a former Royal Navy radio operator, Eric Gow, were 19 when they volunteered to take part in what they believed was research to find a cure for colds. They were sent to the chemical warfare research establishment at Porton Down, Wiltshire. Both said they were not told beforehand that they were going to be tested with LSD. At the time, the effects of LSD, only discovered in 1943, were unknown to the general public. Mr Webb said scientists gave him LSD at least twice in a week. He remembers a nightmarish experience when he hallucinated for a long time. He saw walls melting, cracks appearing in people's faces ... eyes would run down cheeks, Salvador Dali-type faces ... a flower would turn into a slug. He said he had first made inquiries about the experiments in the 1960s but was blanked by the government, which quoted the Official Secrets Act. He said he experienced flashbacks for 10 years after the experiments. Mr Gow said the scientists acted in an irresponsible and sloppy way and had not properly monitored him. They treated us just like guinea pigs. They did not know what was going to happen. One morning, Mr Gow began to trip on LSD, seeing a radiator moving like a squeezebox. He was still hallucinating when later he went dancing with his wellingtons on. Yesterday, he said: I am glad they have finally admitted it. Tuesday July 12th, 2005 There is a significant likelihood that the United States is going to experience a nuclear attack. This attack will probably take the form of the destruction of more than one American city, and will be designed to cause maximum casualties. This seems inevitable because the steps necessary to prevent it have not been taken, and perhaps cannot be taken. While some efforts have been made by Homeland Security to secure our borders and ports against the importation of illegal nuclear materials, the reality is that a determined enemy will eventually get such things through. But who has both the motive and the means? Certainly, al Quaeda would appear to have the motive, as would any number of other terrorist groups, Islamic and otherwise. There is more to it than that, though. While I cannot prove it with documentary evidence, I can speculate that there is a hidden group, not really organized in any overt way, that, taken together, possesses both the motive and the will to engage in this horrific act. The reasons for this are many, chief among them the fact that there would seem to be elements within the United States government who are deeply committed to destroying this free society, and rendering it powerless to prevent their larger aims in the world, which are to fulfill a modified version the racial and social objectives that were formed in Germany during the twenties and thirties of the last century. The power centers of this group are three: Saudi Arabia, Munich, and Texas. Elements of these three communities are connected by a secret bond of loyalty that was forged during and after World War II, in the German prisoner of war camps in South Texas, in the Islamic Center of Munich, and among Texas oil men and the Saudi kingdom. Beginning in 1942, the British began to be unable to house all the German prisoners they were taking in North Africa, then, as the war wound down, in Europe. By late 1944, the western Allies were refusing the surrender of German soldiers, and simply disarming them and sending them home. The Russians were briefly interning them and then killing them like cattle. Prior to this 650,000 German prisoners were sent to internment camps in the United States. A number of these camps were located in Texas, in Hearne, in San Antonio and other places, mostly in South Texas, because the soldiers had been captured in North Africa and the Geneva Convention required that they be interned in areas similar to those in which they had been captured. Soldiers in these camps were governed by their own officers, which meant that a powerful Nazi presence existed in the camps. In fact, they were run by Nazis, with the full co-operation of the US government. Again, it was required under the Geneva Convention that officers of captured troops be allowed to remain responsible for the welfare of their prisoner-soldiers. Also in South Texas was a substantial settlement of Germans who had come as a result of the urging of an early colonist of German extraction, Fredrick Diercks. At present, there are about 2.5 million Texas Germans, located mostly in the hill country north of San Antonio, San Antonio itself, and throughout south Texas. I am, myself, a Texas German, and I do not mean to imply by anything that follows that I think that the majority of Texas Germans are in any way disloyal Americans, or even that people of German descent in Texas form the core of the present post-Nazi group I am discussing here. However, Naziism was brought to Texas by Germans, and it has taken root there, not as a conscious ideology, but as a set of beliefs, attitudes, and political methods that amount to the same thing. At least, this is my belief. I cannot provide documentary evidence, only that of my own experience and memories of what went on in Texas before and during the war, as told me by my father. Prior to World War II, there was a significant Nazi movement in the United States. The FDNA, the American Nazi Party, was run from Germany until 1936, when it became the German-American Bund, an American-run replacement that was designed to be less unpopular with the American people. In South Texas, there were about 2,000 registered Bund members when war broke out between Germany and the US. Most of them were in south Texas, specifically in San Antonio and the counties to the south and east of that city. Some of them were were interned in camps in Crystal City and Kenedy, Texas, along with German aliens who had been in the United States at the time war was declared. This was done to prevent them from sending money to Germany via Mexico. Like the more public Union Bank, which had been created by Prescott Bush with the support of influential Germans, the purpose of this was to enable Germany to replenish its gold reserves, which had been severely depleted after World War I. He's lost 25 pounds and has had blood pressure problems due to the poor diet he is being fed. He also has had shingles for three weeks, indicating that his immune system is failing. The jail feeds the inmates with the lowest quality, most processed food avaiable. They do not believe this is affecting Steve's health, but his weight loss is getting quite dramatic. I am personally very concerned that he will not make it through this situation specifically because of the diet he is being fed. We are gathering information about the importance of diet and cancer because we are hoping to educate the jail about the danger they are putting Steve in with their poor food quality. So far, the jail has been very stubborn about offering Steve food that will nurish his body's particular needs. I am so angry at this poor treatment of Steve. Maybe if we all call the jail and try to educate them about the danger they are putting him in, they would relent and let us provide healthy food. So far, they won't even let us give him food. This is quite odd, because the jail has a deal with McDonald's to provide food from the outside. This is such a sick situation. I hope that it all ends up O.K. The girls and I have so many wonderful plans for our future together as a family. I pray we can see them come to fruition.
