The chairman of Archer Daniels Midland rides off into the beautiful sunset on his yacht, waving his stock options. (The Happy Ending) The Math-based Version Let's take the very rosiest assumptions for corn ethanol, from the paid PR flacks who lobby for the subsidy. They claim that it takes 35,000 BTUs of energy to make 77,000 BTUs of ethanol from corn. No one else gets a ratio anywhere near that good; some calculations show that corn ethanol actually costs energy to make (and fuel ethanol only has 76,100 BTU per gallon according to the EPA). But even this most unrealistic case assumes that about half the energy in a gallon of subsidized ethanol has to come from somewhere else. For comparison, it takes around 22,000 BTU to make a gallon of gasoline. Gasoline contains about 114,000 BTU per gallon, so there's a clear energy profit. Looking at market price instead of BTUs, on June 6 wholesale cost for ethanol was around $2.67 per gallon, vs. 2.09 for gasoline. This isn't counting the cost of the subsidies; even cheating, corn ethanol still isn't as good as gasoline. And mixing the ethanol in to make gasohol adds further refining costs. So, the ethanol programs force us to pay more per gallon for a diluting fuel additive that gives only 2/3 the miles per gallon. This means more gas station stops, more wasted time and gas. Shrubageddon (and the quiet little post on nanotech riding to the rescue) reminded me of my own overarching POV--that 9/11 and the imperial adventures in the Middle East are basically pretexts and diversions in late-stage capitalism’s final assault/last gasp before the façade maintained by technological suppression and artificial scarcity crumbles--which somewhat escaped my focus as I read Jeff’s water hijinks post, because something else was ‘clicking’ for me. It involves, as S intimated, quite a few of the ideas running through the recent threads here (the Vatican pedophilia cover-up, the issue of fake antisemitism, etc) as well as my own current reading. It’s actually only a sort of fuzzy epiphany, as it raises more questions than it answers, and yet something feels vaguely right about it. Here’s how it happened: I’m plowing through a hugely fat, rather dry and overly careful historical analysis called “The Third Reich in Power,” the 2nd volume in the unfinished trilogy by Cambridge prof Richard J. Evans, who is solid, stolid and definitely not in any sense “radical”. In fact, I had been getting a bit annoyed at the short shrift he gave to the role of the transnational corporations in Hitler’s ascension, when suddenly bells started ringing in his treatment of how the Nazis dealt with the threat they perceived the Catholic Church to be. Evans’ take was that Goebbels personally took over after an earlier effort to emasculate the Church by restricting parochial school attendance and Catholic youth group membership (which were seen as competition for fascist state indoctrination and the Hitler Youth respectively) completely backfired, sending many thousands of pissed off Catholics into the streets of Oldenburg, as well as swastika flags into the gutters and even a wave resignations from the Nazi Party, which had never happened before. Hitler was apparently so angry that he wanted to round up all the priests and send them to Sachsenhausen with Martin Niemoeller (author of the famous “When they came for the Communists I did nothing..” speech), but Goebbels was nervous about such a move because Niemoeller was already getting them very negative international press and because they still hadn’t annexed Austria, which was nearly universally Catholic. So, in a brilliantly calculated maneuver, Goebbels dug up a few cases of alleged pedophilia, combined them with rumors of rampant homosexuality in the German monastaries, inflated the numbers involved and cooked up a prodigious scandal where none had been before. He also utilized photo op field trips where kids who weren’t even Catholic were whipped into a Salem-style hysteria, screaming (in front of reporters) not to let the sex fiends get their hands on them. Within a few months parochial attendance went from 95% in Oldenburg to 5%, the local Hitler Youth group mushroomed overnight, Catholic monastaries, lay buildings and finances were confiscated, and many hundreds of priests and monks were (quietly) led off to various concentration camps. I’m not in any way saying that the story of the pedophilia cover- up in recent discussions is related, but hysterical denunciations and faked repressed memories do happen occasionally, in wave-like patterns. The question this raises is who could be orchestrating the faked ones and why? I once knew a teacher who was Salem-ed, the very strictest teacher in my grade school, and even though the kid recanted (her father was later charged with the identical crimes) the teacher was broken, shamed out of the profession. Innocent, even. There’s tremendous power in the mob. The other mob I thought of was the current wave of real and/or imagined antisemitism. Evans also touched on this, describing the Propaganda Ministry’s efforts to inflame the nascent and deeply- rooted antisemitism in Germany into a force which could be reliably used to intimidate, cajole and generally brainwash segments of the population which weren’t quite down with the program enough for Goebbels. In this case, Evans’ account immediately caused me to understand what’s been happening at the site where I used to be a regular (Information Clearinghouse). I had already been challenging some of the more rabid Jew-biters for their obvious manipulation by the likes of Rense and others of his ilk, but the owner of that site, the good and homorable Tom Feely had to shut his comment field down before I really realized what was going on there. There are two historic plaques at the hotel, one of whose wings was used by the British Mandate authority. On one of the plaques, which has been hanging there for some time, a few words note the terror attack: "On July 22, 1946, the Etzel underground bombed the southern wing." The action is attributed to Etzel alone, but there is no condemnation. "Underground" generally has a positive connotation.The unveiling of the other plaque this week was meant to cap an academic conference held at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center on the issue of who is a freedom fighter and who is a terrorist . It was quite a week to clarify such a question. They can be distinguished by organizational affiliation, goals, targets, means of combat and mode of operation. They all assume that a freedom fighter is a good person and a terrorist is a bad one. Nearly every terrorist defines himself as a freedom fighter, and vice versa: freedom fighters are usually defined as terrorists. So was Begin. He invested a lot of effort to convince history that he was not a terrorist. Among other things, he emphasized that his organization did not harm civilians. There's a thesis that could serve as an historic lesson from a moral standpoint: not harming civilians.The new plaque identifies the perpetrators of the attack as "Etzel fighters." It's important for them to emphasize that they acted "under orders from the Hebrew rebel movement," in other words, the Hagannah, among others. They called the hotel switchboard, the editorial offices of the Palestine Post, and the French Embassy (presumably they meant the consulate) "to prevent casualties." In other words, they sought a terrorist attack without casualties, but something went wrong. Twenty-five minutes went by and then "for some reason" the British did not evacuate the building "and as a result" 91 people were "regrettably" killed. There were 28 British, 41 Arabs, 17 Jews, and five others. To emphasize the military aspect of the operation, the plaque notes that one of the Etzel people was killed "in an exchange of fire."The British government is demanding the plaque's removal. Her Majesty's ambassador and the consul have written to the mayor of Jerusalem that such an act of terror cannot be honored, even if it was preceded by a warning. To this day, it is not clear what made the bombing's planners believe the British would evacuate the building. Would Benjamin Netanyahu, as prime minister, have ordered his bureau evacuated on the basis of telephone threat from a Palestinian terror group?Netanyahu spoke at the conference. The difference between a terrorist operation and a legitimate military action is expressed, he said, in the fact that the terrorists intend to harm civilians whereas legitimate combatants try to avoid that. Israel, on the other hand, only harms civilians by accident or when there is no alternative. The worry was that Americans stranded in Lebanon would be slaughtered by a bomb or munitions fired by the warmonger class of the Mossad or other pro-war forces. It is important to note that false-flag operations are often predicated on scheduled drills and wargames. The chief purpose for this is to confuse institutional response to disaster situations by confusing a real-life incident with a similar wargame. But it is also important to note that often dissimilar wargames will also be scheduled concurrent with false-flag operations in order to move resources away from the theater of the incident. During 9/11, we saw this with Operation Northern Vigilance, which diverted many of NORAD's toward the North Pole to fight phantom Russian aircraft; where they were unable to respond to the chaotic situation in the airspace over the East Coast. Similarly, we can note that the US evacuation of its embassy staff and thousands of nationals from Lebanon was slowed by wargames which diverted naval resources to Jordan, in the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea. But when his story didn't add up, Fincher said he confronted Padilla with terrorist allegations and asked if he would testify before a grand jury about his purported al Qaeda connections."He stood up and told me the interview was over and it was time for him to go," Fincher said.Padilla was arrested on a material witness warrant, which allows a person with direct knowledge of alleged criminal acts to be taken into custody. A month later, President Bush designated him an "enemy combatant" and he was placed in military custody. He remained there until November, when he was charged in an existing Miami case.The charges in the Miami case do not mention the "dirty bomb" plot but do claim that Padilla trained at an al Qaeda camp in Afghanistan. Padilla has pleaded not guilty.The hearing Monday concerned whether Padilla was officially in law enforcement custody when the FBI agent interviewed him and, if so, whether he was properly advised of his rights. Padilla's lawyers said his statements should be barred from trial if those rights were violated. U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen T. Brown did not indicate when he would rule.Fincher testified that Padilla wasn't read his Miranda rights until the interview ended. But he also said that Padilla agreed repeatedly to talk with the FBI agents, was never handcuffed or otherwise restrained and never requested a lawyer.The initial pretext for Padilla's airport interview was the discovery by customs officials that he was carrying more than $10,000 in cash but had declared only $8,000.Although he did ask three times to call his mother in Florida, each time he changed his mind, Fincher said. When the FBI offered to contact her for him, Fincher said, Padilla declined because he didn't want her to think he was in trouble again.The FBI also offered to put Padilla up in a hotel to rest so the interview could resume the next day, but again Padilla refused, saying he wanted to clear up the issue about the cash. ''There's been one leak after another, and (intelligence agencies) haven't responded as effectively as they would have liked,'' said Meredith Fuchs, general counsel for the National Security Archive at George Washington University. ''They're trying to set up a system that will be quick-moving, effective and responsive.'' Some security analysts and former NSA officials warned that requiring agency employees to regularly search for leaks could divert attention from regular duties. They also raised concerns that it could place under suspicion people who pursue information through legitimate channels. advertisement NSA spokesman Don Weber characterized the news media policy as ''not a new policy'' but ''a revised (and) updated policy.'' The policy, issued March 20, is apparently the first dedicated solely to news media leaks. The last time the NSA visited the issue was as a small part of an ''annex'' to a 1992 directive on information security, which described the information that should be included when assembling a ''damage assessment'' of a news media disclosure. A copy of the new policy, which is unclassified but labeled ''For Official Use Only,'' and unclassified portions of the 1992 policy were obtained by The Baltimore Sun. Weber said the policy did not represent a stepping-up of anti-leak efforts because ''we've always had a strong effort.'' ''Was it timely?'' he added. ''Certainly.'' Recent disclosures of classified and sensitive information - including newspaper reports on secret CIA prisons, the NSA's warrantless telephone surveillance program, government reviews of financial transactions and the NSA's technology failures - have prompted calls for a crackdown on leaks from the White House and from many congressional Republican leaders, as well as intelligence agency heads. The NSA policy directs agency employees to ''actively monitor the media for the purpose of identifying unauthorized disclosures'' of classified information. It requires that all divisions within the agency produce annual reports on the number of classified leaks they uncover. Such directives create pressure to identify more leaks, said Matthew Aid, a former NSA analyst. ''Instead of hunting for spies within the agency, now you're hunting for disenchanted employees who may know somebody who knows a reporter,'' he said. ''It's bound to divert resources and focus.'' Privacy advocates outside government questioned his experience. Teufel, who worked previously as a lawyer at the Interior Department, has been associate general counsel at the Homeland Security Department. DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff called Teufel an outstanding professional and said he relied on Teufel's judgment and advice. Privacy advocates expressed concerns about what they described as Teufel's apparent lack of experience. He worked under Gale Norton in Colorado and in Washington after Norton became head of the Interior Department. "This is not an appropriate appointment," said Marc Rotenberg, head of the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center, a leading privacy group that has been critical of DHS policies. "He lacks the relevant experience." The head of the ACLU's Washington office, Caroline Fredrickson, agreed. "He doesn't have much of a background to be a privacy officer," she said. "He seems to have no experience in privacy matters." Chertoff said in a statement that Teufel was "highly regarded throughout the department and the legal community for his expertise on privacy, employee relations and civil rights issues." Teufel was the Interior Department lawyer who advised officials there in the 2004 dismissal of Teresa Chambers as chief of the U.S. Park Police. Writing as Covert Communications, CC for short, she opined in her online journal on such national security conundrums as stagflation, the war of ideas in the Middle East and -- in her most popular post -- bad food in the CIA cafeteria.But the hundreds of blog readers who responded to her irreverent entries with titles such as "Morale Equals Food" won't be joining her ever again.On July 13, after she posted her views on torture and the Geneva Conventions, her blog was taken down and her security badge was revoked. On Monday, Axsmith was terminated by her employer, BAE Systems, which was helping the CIA test software.As a traveler in the classified blogosphere, Axsmith was not alone. Hundreds of blog posts appear on Intelink. The CIA says blogs and other electronic tools are used by people working on the same issue to exchange information and ideas.CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano declined to comment on Axsmith's case but said the policy on blogs is that "postings should relate directly to the official business of the author and readers of the site, and that managers should be informed of online projects that use government resources. CIA expects contractors to do the work they are paid to do."A BAE Systems spokesman declined to comment.Axsmith, 42, said in an interview this week that she thinks of herself as the Erma Bombeck of the intel world, a "generalist" writing about lunch meat one day, the war on terrorism the next. She said she first posted her classified blog in May and no one said a thing.When she asked, managers even agreed to give her the statistics on how many people were entering the site. Her column on food pulled in 890 readers, and people sent her reviews from other intelligence agency canteens.The day of the last post, Axsmith said, after reading a newspaper report that the CIA would join the rest of the U.S. government in according Geneva Conventions rights to prisoners, she posted her views on the subject.It started, she said, something like this: "Waterboarding is Torture and Torture is Wrong."And it continued, she added, with something like this: "CC had the sad occasion to read interrogation transcripts in an assignment that should not be made public.
