-Caveat Lector- Begin forwarded message: From: palcat [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: October 8, 2007 1:58:54 AM PDT To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [cia-drugs] Insidious new trojan worm/bot Storm Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] If this is for real, it's pretty scary. http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2007/10/the_storm_worm.html Schneier on Security October 04, 2007 The Storm Worm The Storm worm first appeared at the beginning of the year, hiding in e-mail attachments with the subject line: 230 dead as storm batters Europe. Those who opened the attachment became infected, their computers joining an ever-growing botnet. Although it's most commonly called a worm, Storm is really more: a worm, a Trojan horse and a bot all rolled into one. It's also the most successful example we have of a new breed of worm, and I've seen estimates that between 1 million and 50 million computers have been infected worldwide. Old style worms -- Sasser, Slammer, Nimda -- were written by hackers looking for fame. They spread as quickly as possible (Slammer infected 75,000 computers in 10 minutes) and garnered a lot of notice in the process. The onslaught made it easier for security experts to detect the attack, but required a quick response by antivirus companies, sysadmins and users hoping to contain it. Think of this type of worm as an infectious disease that shows immediate symptoms. Worms like Storm are written by hackers looking for profit, and they're different. These worms spread more subtly, without making noise. Symptoms don't appear immediately, and an infected computer can sit dormant for a long time. If it were a disease, it would be more like syphilis, whose symptoms may be mild or disappear altogether, but which will eventually come back years later and eat your brain. Storm represents the future of malware. Let's look at its behavior: Storm is patient. A worm that attacks all the time is much easier to detect; a worm that attacks and then shuts off for a while hides much more easily. Storm is designed like an ant colony, with separation of duties. Only a small fraction of infected hosts spread the worm. A much smaller fraction are C2: command-and-control servers. The rest stand by to receive orders. By only allowing a small number of hosts to propagate the virus and act as command-and-control servers, Storm is resilient against attack. Even if those hosts shut down, the network remains largely intact, and other hosts can take over those duties. Storm doesn't cause any damage, or noticeable performance impact, to the hosts. Like a parasite, it needs its host to be intact and healthy for its own survival. This makes it harder to detect, because users and network administrators won't notice any abnormal behavior most of the time. Rather than having all hosts communicate to a central server or set of servers, Storm uses a peer-to-peer network for C2. This makes the Storm botnet much harder to disable. The most common way to disable a botnet is to shut down the centralized control point. Storm doesn't have a centralized control point, and thus can't be shut down that way. This technique has other advantages, too. Companies that monitor net activity can detect traffic anomalies with a centralized C2 point, but distributed C2 doesn't show up as a spike. Communications are much harder to detect. One standard method of tracking root C2 servers is to put an infected host through a memory debugger and figure out where its orders are coming from. This won't work with Storm: An infected host may only know about a small fraction of infected hosts -- 25-30 at a time -- and those hosts are an unknown number of hops away from the primary C2 servers. And even if a C2 node is taken down, the system doesn't suffer. Like a hydra with many heads, Storm's C2 structure is distributed. Not only are the C2 servers distributed, but they also hide behind a constantly changing DNS technique called fast flux. So even if a compromised host is isolated and debugged, and a C2 server identified through the cloud, by that time it may no longer be active. Storm's payload -- the code it uses to spread -- morphs every 30 minutes or so, making typical AV (antivirus) and IDS techniques less effective. Storm's delivery mechanism also changes regularly. Storm started out as PDF spam, then its programmers started using e-cards and YouTube invites -- anything to entice users to click on a phony link. Storm also started posting blog-comment spam, again trying to trick viewers into clicking infected links. While these sorts of things are pretty standard worm tactics, it does highlight how Storm is constantly shifting at all levels. The Storm e-mail also changes all the time, leveraging social engineering techniques. There are always new subject lines and new enticing text: A killer at 11, he's free at 21 and ..., football

It should be noted that Chevron, on whose board Condoleezza Rice once sat (they even named one of the supertankers the SS Condoleezza Rice), has major interests in Burma. Dennis Hastert and Tom DeLay have also expressed support for the Burmese junta (although that may have more to do with the junta's well-known ability and willingness to produce young underaged sex partners for visiting VIPs, including CODELS (congressional delegations). *Subject:* bludgeoning monks by the 'lone-tein' We just got phone call with our sister living in Yangon about a few hours ago. We saw on BBC world, saying that 200 monks were arrested. The true picture is far worse. The monastery at an obscure neighborhood of Yangon, called Ngwe Kyar Yan (on Wei-za-yan-tar Road, Yangon) has been raided early this morning. A troop of lone-tein (riot police comprised of paid thugs) protected by the military trucks, raided the monastery with 200 studying monks. They systematically ordered all the monks to line up and banged and crushed each one's head against the brick wall of the monastery. One by one, the peaceful, non resisting monks, fell to the ground, screaming in pain. Then, they tore off the red robes and threw them all in the military trucks (like rice bags) and took the bodies away. The head monk of the monastery, was tied up in the middle of the monastery, tortured , bludgeoned, and later died the same day, today. Tens of thousands of people gathered outside the monastery, warded off by troops with bayoneted rifles, unable to help their helpless monks being slaughtered inside the monastery. Their every try to forge ahead was met with the bayonets. When all is done, only 10 out of 200 remained alive, hiding in the monastery. Blood stained everywhere on the walls and floors of the monastery. Please tell your audience of the full extent of the fate of the monks please please. 'Arrested' is not enough expression. They have been bludgeoned to death. Aye Aye Comments Bill Wade (Exeter) Well, from a moral point of view, we should be launching a military campaign to bring freedom and democracy to Burma, but we won't. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. Joey DiFatta is the chairman of St. Bernard Parish Council and a prominent Republican leader (until 2004 on the GOP state party Executive Committee). He just withdrew from his state senate race, after his arrests for lewd behavior in a public restroom were made public. Read more… From the Times-Picayune article it appears DiFatta may have been Larry “Super Tuber” Craig’s mentor: The report said DiFatta slid his foot into the deputy’s stall and tapped the deputy’s foot. In the report, Conley noted that such activity is common among men to indicate a willingness to participate in sex. The deputy inside the stall, Detective Wayne Couvillion, responded by tapping his foot, and DiFatta reached under the partition and began to rub the deputy’s leg, the report states. The detective asked DiFatta, “What do you want?” according to the report, and he replied, “I want to play with you.” Filed Under: GOP, Scandals Share/Email This | Spotlight | 106 Comments | Trackback | Permalink October 8th, 2007= Email and AIM finally together. He's back ... Sandy Berger now advising Hillary Clinton (Charles Dharapak/AP) Former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger is shown leaving federal court Thu, Sept. 8, 2005 in Washington in this file photo. http://www.examiner.com/ a-977346~He_s_back__Sandy_Berger_now_advising_Hillary_Clinton.html WASHINGTON - Sandy Berger, who stole highly classified terrorism documents from the National Archives, destroyed them and lied to investigators, is now an adviser to presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton. Berger, who was fired from John Kerry’s presidential campaign when the scandal broke in 2004, has assumed a similar role in Clinton’s campaign, even though his security clearance has been suspended until September 2008. This is raising eyebrows even among Clinton’s admirers. “It shows poor judgment and a lack of regard for Berger’s serious misdeeds,” said law professor Jonathan Adler of Case Western Reserve University, who nonetheless called Clinton “by far the most impressive candidate in the Democratic field.” Adler told The Examiner that it is “simply incomprehensible to me that a serious contender for the presidency would rely upon him as a key foreign policy advisor.” He added: “If Senator Clinton becomes the Democratic nominee, at some point she will begin to receive national security briefings that will include sensitive information. At such a point, continuing to keep Berger on board as a key advisor, where he might have access to sensitive material, would be beyond incomprehensible.” The Clinton campaign declined to comment. Berger has admitted stealing documents from the National Archives in advance of the 9/11 Commission hearings in 2003. The documents, written by White House counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke, were a “tough review” of the Clinton administration’s shortcomings in dealing with terrorism, Clarke’s lawyer told the Washington Post. On several occasions, Berger stuffed highly classified documents into his pants and socks before spiriting them out of the Archives building in Washington, according to investigators. On one occasion, upon reaching the street, he hid documents under a construction trailer after checking the windows of the Archives and Justice Department buildings to make sure he was not being watched. Berger came back later and retrieved the documents, taking them home and cutting them up with scissors. Two days later, he was informed by Archive employees that his removal of documents had been detected. “Berger panicked because he realized he was caught,” said a report by the National Archives inspector general, which also recounted his initial reaction. “Berger lied.” Berger also lied to the public, telling reporters he made an “honest mistake” by “inadvertently” taking the documents, which he blamed on his own “sloppiness.” Bill Clinton vouched for the explanation for Berger, who served as his national security adviser. Berger later conceded: “I was giving a benign explanation for what was not benign.” The Justice Department initially said Berger stole only copies of classified documents and not originals. But the House Government Reform Committee later revealed that an unsupervised Berger had been given access to classified files of original, uncopied, uninventoried documents on terrorism. Several Archives officials acknowledged that Berger could have stolen any number of items and they “would never know what, if any, original documents were missing.” At his sentencing in September 2005, Berger was fined $50,000, placed on probation for two years and stripped of his security clearance for three years. -Caveat Lector- Begin forwarded message: From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: October 8, 2007 12:05:57 PM PDT To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: (2) The 21st Century Crusades? The Vatican vs the State of Israel As Christians occupying the Holy Land, and as de facto guardians of Christendom's holy sites in Israel, the PALESTINIANS are theoretically entitled to the diplomatic protection of the Catholic Church. In the eyes of ultra-conservative Catholics, the oppression of the Palestinian people by the State of Israel amounts to persecution of native believers in Christ by Jews, the murderers of Christ -- a kind of collective crucifixion still reeking of the iconic event of 30 AD. Israel demanding right to buy Greek Orthodox church property By Meron Rapoport http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/824151.html Israel is demanding that the Greek Orthodox patriarchy conduct a census of all church property in Israel and the Palestinian territories ahead of its sale or long-term lease, and to give Israel the first right of refusal on the property. The two attorney's represent Theophilos, who was elected patriarch by the Greek Orthodox Synod about a year and a half ago, and who has since then been working to obtain Israel's recognition as patriarch. Sources close to Theophilos said his attorneys were told that the acceptance of the clauses in the document were a condition to Israel's recognizing him as patriarch. Theophilos' attorneys rejected the conditions as an illegal and extraneous intervention in church matters. The document delivered by Eitan to Theophilos' attorneys shows that a central issue occupying the committee is how to ensure that Greek Orthodox church assets will be sold to Jewish bodies or to the state. Eitan refused to comment, saying that the matter was currently before the court. The Greek Orthodox church owns tens of thousands of dunams of land in the Galilee, central Israel and Jerusalem. --- http://old.orthodoxnews.com/178/Lands.htm ... The Greek Orthodox Church owns vast tracts of land in Israel and also lands in Jordan. Patriarch Irenieos I is head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Israel, which includes many Palestinians. Reports surfaced recently that someone in the Greek Orthodox Church leased lands in the Old City of Jerusalem, reportedly just inside the Jaffa Gate, to a Jewish organization. Normally there would be nothing noteworthy about Jews leasing or purchasing property in Palestine as Jews have been doing this for over 100 years in an organized manner; and before the advent of modern Zionism in the 1890s for hundreds of years on an invididual basis. According to a report in Ma’ariv, one of Israel’s main Hebrew daily newspapers, members of the Palestinian Authority went to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem's Old City, organized attacks on [Patriarch] Irineous and condemned him as a “collaborator” - a crime in the Palestinian Authority punishable by death. Readers should appreciate what it means to be labelled 'a collaborator' in the Palestinian Authority. Collaborators are shot or hanged in public places and their bodies hacked and mutilated by the mob and all done with great enthusiasm. To quote the report further, Irineous was summoned for an interrogation by PA Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei and during the meeting the arm of Irineous’ lawyer was broken and his financial adviser was brutally beaten. Under PA intimidation, the Church’s Holy Synod was convened and Irineous was excommunicated. The PA took over the Church’s finances. Greece’s Deputy Foreign Minister hurriedly went to Ramallah, met PM Qurei and “apologized for the terrible crime” of the Patriarch. Irineous has been demoted to the status of an ordinary monk. But the matter does not stop there. The Greek Orthodox Church owns land in Jerusalem upon which Israel’s Knesset is situated; also land upon which the President’s residence is situated and large swathes of land in central Jerusalem, not to mention lands throughout Israel. If the Palestinian Authority is the 'efffective owner' of all the lands then what will happen when these leases expire?
