Vatican Prints Secrets of Knights Templar By Philip Pullella, Reuters Posted: 2007-10-13 00:08:04 Filed Under: World News VATICAN CITY (Oct. 12) - The Knights Templar, the medieval Christian military order accused of heresy and sexual misconduct, will soon be partly rehabilitated when the Vatican publishes trial documents it had closely guarded for 700 years. Photo Gallery: Church Secret Revealed Alessandro Bianchi, Reuters 1 of 9 A reproduction of the minutes of trials against the Templars, 'Processus Contra Templarios -- Papal Inquiry into the Trial of the Templars' is a massive work and much more than a book -- with a $8,333 price tag. This is a milestone because it is the first time that these documents are being released by the Vatican, which gives a stamp of authority to the entire project, said Professor Barbara Frale, a medievalist at the Vatican's Secret Archives. Nothing before this offered scholars original documents of the trials of the Templars, she told Reuters in a telephone interview ahead of the official presentation of the work on October 25. The epic comes in a soft leather case that includes a large-format book including scholarly commentary, reproductions of original parchments in Latin, and -- to tantalize Templar buffs -- replicas of the wax seals used by 14th-century Inquisitors. Reuters was given an advance preview of the work, of which only 799 numbered copies have been made. One parchment measuring about half a meter wide by some two meters long is so detailed that it includes reproductions of stains and imperfections seen on the originals. Pope Benedict will be given the first set of the work, published by the Vatican Secret Archives in collaboration with Italy's Scrinium cultural foundation, which acted as curator and will have exclusive world distribution rights. The Templars, whose full name was Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, were founded in 1119 by knights sworn to protecting Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land after the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099. They amassed enormous wealth and helped finance wars of some European monarchs. Legends of their hidden treasures, secret rituals and power have figured over the years in films and bestsellers such as The Da Vinci Code. The Knights have also been portrayed as guardians of the legendary Holy Grail, the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper before his crucifixion. The Vatican expects most copies of the work to be bought up by specialized libraries at top universities and by leading medieval scholars. Burned at the Stake The Templars went into decline after Muslims re-conquered the Holy Land at the end of the 13th century and were accused of heresy by King Philip IV of France, their foremost persecutor. Their alleged offences included denying Christ and secretly worshipping idols. The most titillating part of the documents is the so-called Chinon Parchment, which contains phrases in which Pope Clement V absolves the Templars of charges of heresy, which had been the backbone of King Philip's attempts to eliminate them. Templars were burned at the stake for heresy by King Philip's agents after they made confessions that most historians believe were given under duress. The parchment, also known as the Chinon Chart, was misplaced in the Vatican archives until 2001, when Frale stumbled across it. The parchment was catalogued incorrectly at some point in history. At first I couldn't believe my eyes. I was incredulous, she said. This was the document that a lot of historians were looking for, the 37-year-old scholar said. Philip was heavily indebted to the Templars, who had helped him finance his wars, and getting rid of them was a convenient way of cancelling his debts, some historians say. Frale said Pope Clement was convinced that while the Templars had committed some grave sins, they were not heretics. Spitting on the Cross Their initiation ceremony is believed to have included spitting on the cross, but Frale said they justified this as a ritual of obedience in preparation for possible capture by Muslims. They were also said to have practiced sodomy. Simply put, the pope recognized that they were not heretics but guilty of many other minor crimes -- such as abuses, violence and sinful acts within the order, she said. But that is not the same as heresy. Despite his conviction that the Templars were not guilty of heresy, in 1312 Pope Clement ordered the Templars disbanded for what Frale called the good of the Church following his repeated

For decades the family repressed its Nazi past, but a new documentary film provides new photos of old revelations that have prompted the Quandts to confront their own history of using slave laborers in factories during World War II. It is difficult to ignore the stories of former forced laborers during the Nazi era. Their memories are painful to listen to, even when they are presented calmly and without any finger-pointing. One former forced laborer telling his story today is Carl-Adolf Soerensen, a former Danish resistance fighter who was deported in 1943 and sent to a satellite concentration camp in the Stöcken district of the northern German city of Hanover and forced to work in the adjacent Afa battery plant. I arrived here with 40 comrades, says Soerensen, now 82, in a documentary produced by the northern German public broadcaster NDR. He and his fellow slave laborers assembled batteries for German submarines in the Afa plant, which was owned by German industrialist Günther Quandt. The men handled toxic heavy metals without any protective gear. Six died in the first three months alone, says Soerensen. PHOTO GALLERY: THE QUANDT FAMILY BREAKS ITS SILENCE Click on a picture to launch the image gallery (5 Photos) According to Soerensen, men from the SS told him that inmates at Stöcken couldn't expect to survive more than six months. Most succumbed to lead poisoning. Soerensen, now an old man, looks tiny as he stands in a meadow on the site of the former camp and tells his story. It took two NDR authors five years to complete the research for their documentary film, The Silence of the Quandts. It is an impressive film, one the German national television network ARD ought to be proud of. Instead, though, ARD chose to hide the film the way a vegetable vendor might cover up his wilted produce. The film, which was not announced in program guides, was aired on a Sunday night two weeks ago -- at 11:30 p.m. FROM THE MAGAZINE Find out how you can reprint this DER SPIEGEL article in your publication. Advance copies of the film were sent to only a handful of journalists, while the network quietly suggested to others that it might be worth their while to watch the portrait of actress Inge Meysel that was in fact scheduled for the Sunday night time slot. The topic only gained momentum last week when the press reported on the program. NDR was apparently intimidated by the powerful and wealthy Quandt family, which today is a major shareholder in BMW, Altana, a chemical group, and many other companies. It was feared that the family could prevent the broadcast by securing a court injunction against NDR. Amid all the secrecy, the widely dispersed Quandt clan, the descendants of former Leader of the Armament Economy Günther Quandt missed the film's initial broadcast. It was only after the fact that Günther Quandt's daughter-in-law, Johanna Quandt, her children Susanne Klatten and Stefan Quandt, as well as other family members, watched a recording of the program. According to a family friend, it was apparently a nightmarish experience for many family members. Nevertheless, instead of considering their legal options, family members were more concerned about damage control and how best to protect the Quandt family's image. The

The slogan, however, conceals a more pernicious demand: Support Our Mercenaries. Yes, in Iraq, the mercenaries--euphemistically called paid contractors--outnumber US troops, 180,000 to 160,000. These contractors do more than provide armed security for US personnel. They do chores that previously belonged to regular army staff. Private security companies employ for high pay former US soldiers, ex-kidnappers and torturers from Pinochet's secret police, death squad heavies from a variety of Central and South American countries and a few leftover South African apartheid thugs as well. The companies collect billions from US taxpayers. A typical U.S. soldier serving in Iraq makes about: $57 a day. The estimated daily take for a Blackwater security guard there runs between $500- $600. (FACING SOUTH A News and Politics Report Sept. 26, 2007) Imagine a scene in the corporate boardroom of Whitepiss Security Inc., a typical contractor with the Pentagon located in Upper South Carolina. The Chief executive, a former Special Forces veteran who was friends with Timothy McVey, and a diehard supporter of the Confederacy cause, refuses to use the word North. This descendent of the slave holding Col. Beauregard Fathorn gleefully counts his profits derived from providing security in Iraq. Then he shares his thoughts with fellow executives: The Eyerack War, he says, has become the most beautiful thing that has happened to this country since the glorious attack at Fort Sumter. It has awakened us from the sloth of peace and prosperity brought about by the treasonous Clinton Administration. In 1997, a former Navy Seal from a rich family figured out how to sell violence and enhance his wealth. Blackwater on its webpage disguises both its greed and its murderous intent by referring to understanding of the need for innovative, flexible training and operational solutions to support security and peace, and freedom and democracy everywhere. CEO and founder Eric Prince believed the military and law enforcement establishments would require additional capacity to train fully our brave men and women in and out of uniform to the standards required to keep our country secure. The Website advertises not simply a 'private security company.' We are a professional military, law enforcement, security, peacekeeping, and stability operations firm who provides turnkey solutions. We assist with the development of national and global security policies and military transformation plans. We can train, equip and deploy public safety and military professionals, build live-fire indoor/outdoor ranges, MOUT facilities and shoot houses, create ground and aviation operations and logistics support packages, develop and execute canine solutions for patrol and explosive detection, and can design and build facilities both domestically and in austere environments abroad. One could easily read this as an appeal to Congress to direct the entire military budget away from the Pentagon and toward Blackwater? Indeed, Prince has donated $200,000 to the Republican Party. (FACING SOUTH) Coincidentally, Blackwater ranks first among 140 private security contractors in Iraq. And its employees have killed more Iraqis than its rivals. (NY Times September 27) The estimated worth of its contracts there runs about $300 million. Why not? Blackwater advertises itself as the most responsive,
