the conspiracy is to patronize the latter rather than the former. Use
the local hardware store down the street rather than drive down to the
strip mall to the Home Depot, or Lowes, or Ace, or whatever the big

It is unsettling to realize that Lewis wrote this book in the late 1940s,

[CTRL] Ann Coulter on the Religious Cult of Liberalism

2001-06-15 Thread Amelia

-Caveat Lector-

Ann Coulter ()

June 15, 2001

DISESTABLISH THE CULT OF LIBERALISM

This week the Supreme Court upheld the right of religious
groups to participate in the beautiful mosaic of after-school
activities. No new territory was broken: The case was almost
identical to another case in which the Supreme Court reversed
the exact same court years ago. This was massive resistance.

Justice Clarence Thomas remarked on the oddity of having to
reverse the same court twice, noting that while the appellate
courts aren't required to cite all the Supreme Court's
precedents, they might want to cite the last time they were
reversed on the same facts.

At least the 6-3 decision gives us an accurate count of the
atheists on the court, probably as accurate as my dream of
giving them all polygraph tests someday. (Do you believe in a
Higher Being ... no, seriously.) Concerned someone might be
reading Leviticus during school hours, Justice David Souter
dissented in a hair-splitting exegesis about the precise time
classes let out (2:56 p.m.), vs. the time the organizers would
enter school property (2:30 p.m.).

The New York Times' obligatory hysterical denunciation of the
decision revealingly complained: (C)hildren that young are
unlikely to discern that the religious message of authority
figures who come to the school each day to teach does not
carry the school's endorsement.

It is simply taken for granted that it's desirable for
children to revere authority figures at government schools.
Normally those authority figures are teaching the youngsters
to put condoms on zucchini or training them in the catechism
of recycling. Sending a mixed message about government
authority figures might interfere with the state's ability
to turn small children into Good Germans inculcated in the
liberal religion.

It's well past time for liberalism to be declared a religion
and banned from public schools. Allowing Christians to be one
of many after-school groups induces hysteria not just because
liberals hate religion. It's because the public school is
their temple. Children must be taught to love Big Brother,
welcoming him to take over our schools, our bank accounts, our
property, even our toilet bowls.

We're told the First Amendment requires a separation of church
and state, which, just as an incidental matter, is completely
false. The whole point of the Constitution is to separate the
federal government from the individual.

In keeping with the general theme, the First Amendment
provides that Congress cannot establish a religion -- but nor
can it stop the states from establishing religions. That's why
it says: Congress shall make no law respecting an
establishment of religion. Dear Congress: You may be eligible
for a free country. You do nothing.

The only thing that tempers my annoyance with the canard about
states not being allowed to establish religions is imagining
the kind of established religion we'd have in New York. We'd
be doing daily devotionals to Saint Hillary.

Still, it is a fact that when the First Amendment was
ratified, several states had established religions.
Fortunately for the burgeoning minority religions in those
states, the established religions were things like
Episcopalianism and Congregationalism rather than
Liberalism.

It's hard to imagine now, but before the official government
religion was liberalism -- devoted to class warfare, ethnic
hatred and intolerance -- Americans were kind to one another.
They managed to get along even without ACLU lawsuits. Thus,
when there were enough practitioners of other faiths in a
state to be bothered by the established religion, the majority
just disestablished themselves.

Back to the New Country: Two malcontents at the Virginia
Military Institute recently sued to ban VMI's tradition of
saying a non-denominational prayer at mealtime. The cadets are
not required to recite the prayer or even bow their heads.
Merely having to stand while listening to an invocation of God
is apparently very upsetting for them. (I'd hate to see these
guys under fire.)

A typical rendition of the VMI dinner prayer goes like this:
Almighty God, we give our thanks for VMI, for its reputation,
spirit and ideals. Let your favor continue toward our school
and your grace be abundantly supplied to the Corps. Now, O
God, we receive this food and share this meal together with
thanksgiving.

It doesn't get any more sectarian than that. How about:
Designer of the Universe (if you're out there) ...

Religious people keep cheerfully going back and trying to
formulate some prayer that won't make liberals angry. But the
problem won't go away. No prayer that assumes a belief in a
Higher Being will ever be acceptable. God has no part in the
religion of sex education, environmentalism, feminism, Marxism
and loving Big Brother.

In a totally unsurprising development, liberals finally
suspended their opposition to the death penalty in the case of
Timothy McVeigh. He was the

as bad on the other side. The only book I have read that even attempts to

-Caveat Lector-

Kris,

I take it your question is addressed to me as this is my post
although another posted the same article under a different
header.

Ann Coulter is known for her rather sarcastic wit but there is
an element of truth in her contention that it is ridiculous to
be so concerned with religion in after-school activities when
all day long, children attending govt schools are being
indoctrinated in the liberal point of view and having their
values rearranged in other ways. I know this to be true for I
have seen it happen with my own children. So in that context,
I do believe this.

Perhaps you do not appreciate Ms. Coulter's style of writing
for it is designed to make people think and I do think some
people have not considered the fact that much that is taught
in schools that is social engineering at its worst. I am not
the only one who thinks this for that is why we have such a
rise in home schooling now. She does not literally mean
liberalism is a religion but that it is taught in public
schools (yes, I KNOW this to be true) yet they are the ones
who object to any OTHER ideologies being presented.

Do you believe there are no ideologies presented in the
classrooms and that education if strictly academic and free
from political and social orientation? That is all she is
saying.

Are we no longer about different aspects of the political
dialectic?

Well, Dale, how is that different than liberal commentators?
She is supposed to be biased as she is a conservative
commentator, not a news reporter or journalist. She does not
present herself as being neutral.

So you do not believe there are politics of the liberal
persuasion being taught in schools? Been there lately?

But what really concerns me is that although two different
posters posted this same article, Coulter is far from the
extreme right as in Falwell and The Christian Coalition. What
would happen if a post from that element appeared? Are
conservative points of view not to be presented, even as this
was done, without comment or endorsement? Did I misread the
Mission Statement of this list? I thought different sides of
the political dialectic were SUPPOSED to be presented for the
purpose of acting it out.

Now it seems to me that this is not true judging from the
reaction to this article, which should have been innocuous in
and of itself. As I said, I have never seen Coulter deemed
extreme. So is one side presenting here for only the
convenience of the opposite (liberal) side to bash and
validate themselves? That would not be very nice, would it?

We have posts from the extreme side of the left in the form of
gays, eco-extremists, wiccans, pagans, anarchists but not from
Falwell nor Christian Coalition, etc. yet even moderate
conservative views draw fire. What is wrong with this
picture, in light of the mission statement?

That's correct, they are all the same and equally irritating.

So you do not believe there are politics of the liberal
persuasion being taught in schools? Been there lately?

I have no disagreement with Ms. Coulter on that. But it doesn't matter to me
what they are teaching; the problem is they teach people what to think
instead of how to think and as a result people are unable to see there are
two sides to everything.

But what really concerns me is that although two different

Some of us dislike the conservative AND liberal view but to either side that
is heresy. Politics is a hissy-fight over who gets to spend other peoples'
money, and how much to skim off the top. A necessary evil that is very
necessary so we must tolerate the imperfections.

Now it seems to me that this is not true judging from the
reaction to this article, which should have been innocuous in

You are correct; I have a problem with Ms. Coulter and that is a matter of
personal taste. She rubs me the wrong way.

Those are all labels that define people much too narrowly for my
preferences. I try to keep politics and religion out of my thinking because
they just clutter things up.

Well, Nessie, I basically agree with what you are saying but
that was NOT the issue about which I was asking. I apparently
did not express myself well. I was saying that just ANN
COULTER was not considered extremists and giving some examples
of possible groups generally considered one way or the other,
like Jerry Falwell on the right and maybe Marxist on the left
as possible people who would be counted extremists for
contrast.

My question was what was wrong with posting the weekly,
nationally syndicated column of a person who is NOT extreme,
frequent visitor of talk show news pundits on TV, etc. Ann
Counter. Why does this deem me a fool and her article
'irritating' and 'propaganda' that requires I be so informed
by the listowner? You, yourself, have raised the very subject
she does with her article. It is how people view the ideology
of others as being taught in schools, etc. at the expense of
their tax dollars. You have said you do not like the
superstitions of others so taught. She is aying what is so
magic about the 'after school' aspect of what goes on when it
has been going on all day.

Why is it wrong to post this? Is this forum for liberal views
only because when I signed up, I understood something very
differently about different views, etc. all coming together
and Hegelian dialectic and all sides being necessary to get a
complete picture. If this post is inappropriate, I want to
clearly know that. I will not post material that is in any
way inappropriate to this list. I do not, on the other hand,
appreciate being given the impression that all sides were free
to post if they are not. Just asking for clarification as to
why a Coulter post is not welcome when some post up to two
entire newsletters of much more extreme material, page after
page.

I seem to have missed some rule or other and want to know what
it is and where it is located because I got the same deal when
I posted a Neal Boortz article. Coulter is Republican and
Boortz is a Libertarian. If this is a liberal forum, I want t
o know and that is what I am trying to find out.
