China army on high alert as Taiwan votes - HK paper

Updated 9:46 PM ET March 17, 2000
HONG KONG, March 18 (Reuters) - China's armed forces are on high alert to
take action if pro-independence candidate Chen Shui-bian wins Taiwan's
presidential election, a Beijing-backed newspaper in Hong Kong said on
Saturday.
"To tackle any sudden results of the elections, the People's Liberation Army,
airforce and navy is on high alert and ready to take measures according to
the existing situation," the Wen Wei Po quoted an unnamed source as saying.

"If Chen Shui-bian takes the seat (of power), turbulence is inevitable. It
will increase the likelihood of our using force to solve the Taiwan
question," the paper said.

U.S. Defence Secretary William Cohen said in Tokyo on Friday he saw no signs
that China was preparing to attack Taiwan, but he warned Beijing that the use
of force was not an acceptable way for the rivals to settle differences.

The Hong Kong daily carried a banner headline on page three and splashed
pictures of a partially submerged submarine and helicopters, as well as
photos of tanks and missiles.

"The Chinese government is paying close attention to Taiwan's regional
elections," it said.

Taiwan began voting in presidential elections on Saturday after all-night
rallies that drew hundreds of thousands of citizens.

The prospect of a win by the pro-independence candidate has alarmed Beijing,
which considers Taiwan a rebel province and has threatened to invade if the
island of 23 million people declared statehood.
