-Caveat Lector- Weather Wreaks Havoc in Europe By MIHAELA ARMASELU .c The Associated Press BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Intense rain and a heat wave swept across central and eastern Europe over the weekend, killing more than a dozen people, flooding farms and blocking rail and road links. In Romania, 10 people died in flooding or drowned in rivers while seeking respite from temperatures as high as 104 degrees. A 40-year-old Romanian man died in the Siret River in western Romania after diving into the surging waters to save his two daughters, who also drowned. Hailstones, some as big as eggs, tore down electricity lines, cutting power to 26 villages near the Yugoslav border, the state news agency Rompres said. The hailstorm killed hundreds of farm animals and destroyed dozens of cars and roofs, the private Mediafax agency said. In the Yugoslav republic of Serbia, two days of rain and flooding left at least one person dead and a dozen missing. Rail lines and roads were flooded, and parts of Belgrade, the capital, were without power and drinking water over the weekend. A sudden deluge in eastern Hungary swept away four bridges, killing two men, the state-run news agency MTI reported Sunday. Rail traffic was disrupted at several points and there was one report of a train derailing. No injuries were reported. Northwestern Hungary was also hard hit. Thirty houses were submerged in Komarom, a large industrial town 50 miles east of Budapest, and more than a hundred houses were flooded in a nearby town. Thirty vacationing children had to be rescued from their tents when floods swamped a campsite in the area. Television stations broadcast scenes of weeping peasants, who had lost their homes and livestock in the flooding. Police, firefighters and soldiers have been working around the clock during the weekend to pump water from basements and rescue children and elderly people. Officials evacuated 200 people from the Tyrol region of western Austria because of the threat of mudslides. Dozens of people died in the area after a series of snow avalanches earlier this year. Storms also swept through the Czech Republic. Strong winds in the south and east of the country toppled trees and left hundreds of people without power on Saturday. Vineyards were flooded in Slovakia in two towns not far from Bratislava, the country's capital. DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion and informational exchange list.
