The Washington Weekly Follows Pattern of Obstruction by the DOJ By MARVIN LEE An Assistant U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles was in 1998 denied permission by the Clinton Justice Department to seek espionage charges against Chinese spy Peter Lee, who confessed to two very serious charges of espionage. In 1985, Dr. Peter Lee provided to the scientists of the People's Republic of China information about nuclear energy. In 1997, Dr. Lee again provided to scientists of the People's Republic of China information about detecting submarines. Yet the Clinton Justice Department told the prosecuting attorney that he could only file a criminal complaint under section 1001 of 18 U.S.C. (false statement), according to Senator Arlen Specter who has interviewed the prosecuting attorney. Senator Arlen Specter of the Judiciary subcommittee on oversight on the Department of Justice has issued subpoenas to the former assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California and to a current employee at the Department of Justice in Washington, DC. Senator Specter is investigating the interference by the Clinton administration in this Chinese espionage case that follows the pattern of the investigation of Dr. Wen Ho Lee, where the DOJ denied investigators permission to seek a wiretap to detect the scope of Wen Ho Lee's transfer of nuclear weapons technology from Los Alamos to the People's Republic of China. It also follows the pattern of the Gore Buddhist temple fund-raising scandal, where the U.S. Attorney in L.A., Stephen Mansfield, was told by Reno's assistant Lee Radek to shut down his investigation. "Your office should take no steps to investigate these matters," Radek wrote to Mansfield. It also follows the pattern of the comfortable plea bargains reached by Chinese spy John Huang and Chinese agents Maria Hsia and Charlie Trie with the Justice Department. It also follows the pattern of Hillary Clinton helping Chinese spy John Huang get a security clearance without a background check and helping him hide from federal Marshals when he was wanted for a Judicial Watch civil suit against the Commerce Department. Curiously, when Senator Specter took to the floor of the Senate last week to explain this serious travesty of justice, and the attempts of Attorney General Janet Reno to stonewall his investigation, Senator Barbara Boxer tried to interfere and prevent him from speaking. "I thought we were supposed to be discussing the budget," she said, interrupting Senator Specter. But the Senate President told her to shut up and let Senator Specter speak. It was Barbara Boxer who saw to it that Charles LaBella's career as a federal prosecutor in California ended after he recommended to Janet Reno that she seek an independent counsel to investigate the quid pro quo between the Chinese campaign donations to the Clinton White House and the Democratic Party and the illegal transfer of military technology and intelligence to China.
