Space expert Myers to land top US military job
CRAWFORD, Texas, Aug 24 (AFP) - President George W. Bush announced Friday
his nomination of Air Force General Richard Myers, an expert on space
military issues, to be the next chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff,
the top US armed forces job.
Myers, 59, was head of the US Space Command, based in the
western state of Colorado, from 1998 to 2000.
On Thursday, Bush said the United States would withdraw from
the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty "on our timetable," referring to the 1972
accord which prohibits the kind of missile shield he says Washington will
deploy to blunt attacks by so-called "rogue states."
