More news from TRAC. We have just put up a new edition of our FBI public web site,
this one spotlighting on intelligence, internal security and terrorism issues. It is
embargoed for Monday, August 28 (6:30 PM Sunday) Key findings: FBI intelligence
officers almost quintupled in number during the Clinton years, warrants under the
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act also higher, climbing from 484 to 886 during the
same period. But only 45 of the FBI's 12,730 1998 convictions involved what the
Justice Department classified as internal security or terrorism matters. For more
information go to http://trac.syr.edu/media

As you probably know by now, TRAC offers five other free public sites. They are
devoted to the IRS, DEA, INS, ATF and Customs.

In addition, TRAC operates a subscription site, TRACFED, offering a great deal more
information about a wide range of federal enforcement activities and other aspects of
the federal government. Here is a listing of the available information that now is
available. (1) Complete data about the CRIMINAL enforcement activities of the federal
investigative agencies and prosecutors --by any federal agency, by lead charge, by the
90 federal judicial districts and for the nation as a whole. (2) Data on
ADMINISTRATIVE actions by the IRS --audits, collections for individuals and
corporations, by income class and the 33 IRS districts. (Administrative actions by
other agencies to come). (3) Federal staffing information about most civilian
employees of government. Statistical overviews by county, state and the 90 federal
districts as well as the names, salaries, job description of individual employees. (4)
Extensive demographic and economic information.

Coming very soon to TRACFED is a major new data component: information about all CIVIL
matters referred to the US attorneys. Includes both the suits the government brings
against corporate polluters, fraudulent medical providers, asset forfeitures matters,
etc., and the suits that individual and organizations bring against the government. By
cause of action, from referral to disposition, district-by-district and for the nation
as a whole; a previously unexplored aspect of how the government enforces the law.
