Although the first inquest into Calvi's death returned a verdict of suicide, his family have long claimed that he was murdered. This theory was confirmed by a recent Italian investigation which, in July this year, issued its final report into the circumstances of his death. Calvi was found dead in June 1982, hanging beneath Blackfriars Bridge. The discovery came just days after Banco Ambrosiano, a Vatican-based bank of which he was president, collapsed with debts of $1.3bn (£0.8bn). However, Calvi's business connections reveal motives for murder. The Banco Ambrosiano had dealt not only with the Cosa Nostra, but also with the Vatican's financial arm, the Institute for the Works of Religion, and P2, a highly influential but illegal Masonic lodge of which Calvi was a member. In October last year, Rome prosecutors, who had been investigating the case since 1998, announced the results of forensic tests on Calvi's exhumed remains. The results showed it was most likely that he had been strung up from underneath the bridge by his killers. Calvi's pockets were weighed down with bricks and stone, suggesting a Masonic connection. Blackfriars, or Fratelli Neri, is the nickname for the Italian Freemasons, who swear that those who betray the brotherhood will be weighed down with stones and drowned. But in December 2002, a Mafia supergrass told police that Calvi had been murdered by the mob for stealing funds they had handed to him to launder. The supergrass accused a convicted Mafioso, Pippo Calo, of ordering the hit. Ryan, resigned amid allegations that he had molested three teenage boys 20 years ago. And over the last 14 years, four Kingston police officers have been accused of sex crimes. Licio Gelli, 79, is a former grandmaster of the P2 (Propaganda-Due) Masonic lodge, which was linked to extreme right-wing groups in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Gelli was found guilty of fraud arising from the 1982 collapse of the Banco Ambrosiano, which had close ties to the Vatican. He fled six months ago while on parole at his home in Tuscany but Italian police tracked him down to Cannes on the French Riviera. In poor health Gelli suffered a mild heart attack shortly after his arrest and is then said to have tried to commit suicide while in hospital in Marseille. On Friday Gelli flew into Rome's Ciampino airport amid tight security and was whisked off to the city's Regina Coeli jail. Gelli has been periodically on the run since 1981 when he fled to Switzerland after P2 was unearthed during an inquiry into Roberto Calvi, a freemason who was found hanged from London's Blackfriars Bridge. He was arrested while trying to withdraw tens of millions of dollars from a special bank account in Geneva but escaped from a Swiss prison. Billions of missing dollars Gelli fled to South America but gave himself up in 1987 and was extradited to Italy. Banco Ambrosiano was Italy's largest private bank but collapsed with $1bn of debts. He is also facing a three year sentence in connection with the workings of P2. Investigations into P2, whose 1,000 members including politicians, businessmen and military officers, have failed to prove the lodge conspired with right-wing extremists and the Mafia to destabilise Italy through bombings and violence. -Caveat Lector- AP Headlines Wednesday December 16 12:09 PM ET Italians Exhume Banker's Body COMO, Italy (AP) - While his son and a judge looked on, the body of a Vatican-connected financier was exhumed today to determine whether his 1982 death was murder or suicide. Prosecutors hope a new examination of the body will shed light on the death of Roberto Calvi, whose corpse was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London following Italy's biggest postwar banking scandal. Calvi was known as ``God's banker'' for his close ties to the Vatican. Calvi's wooden coffin was taken from the family tomb in Drezzo, a town on the shores of Lake Como, sealed with lead and loaded onto a hearse for the trip to the morgue in nearby Milan. Despite the years since Calvi's death, Italian Judge Otello Lupacchini said he was certain that forensic science could determine the cause of death. Banco Ambrosiano, in which the Vatican bank held a significant stake, collapsed in 1982 when it could not collect $1.4 billion in loans to shell companies in Latin America. Calvi, the bank's chairman, was found dead days later. Roman businessman Flavio Carboni has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Prosecutors asked for the exhumation after Carboni's lawyers presented a report based on a preliminary examination of the body that indicated Calvi had hanged himself. ``What do I think of the exhumation? It was Carboni's right to seek it in his defense. For us, it's traumatic,'' said Carlo Calvi, who flew in from his home in Montreal.
