-Caveat Lector- http://www.inside.com/jcs/Story?article_id=22175&pod_id=8 Super-Clintonista Sidney Blumenthal Sells His 'Insider's Account' Farrar, Straus & Giroux gets the journalist-turned-Presidential-assistant to weigh in with his take on the Clinton years, the vast right-wing conspiracy, Monica and a little spat he's been having with Matt Drudge. EXCLUSIVE by Sara Nelson Monday , January 29, 2001 04:21 p.m. With a short proposal in hand and a new agent at his side, just retired Clinton assistant Sidney Blumenthal sold his book to venerable Farrar, Straus & Giroux. ICM agent Sloan Harris brokered the world rights deal with the Holzbrinck-owned house, which pre-empted with a bid in the solid six figures. (Blumenthal's previous agent was Kathy Robbins.) Elisabeth Sifton is the editor on the book, which is tentatively titled The Clinton Wars or, perhaps, What Really Happened . Harris says that the manuscript will be delivered in early 2002, with publication probably later that year. Blumenthal is a character nearly as controversial as the Clintons. He left his job as a writer for the New Yorker to work at the White House, where he immediately became their official -- and compensated -- partisan and fierce protector. He publicly agreed with the First Lady that Whitewater, the Paula Jones trial and Monicagate were functions of a ''vast right-wing conspiracy.'' As an unabashed Clinton loyalist, Blumenthal will surely write a memoir less emotionally fraught than the one former Clinton staffer George Stephanopoulos wrote for Little, Brown in 1999. That book read like a tale of a betrayal of an innocent true-believer. Blumenthal was and remains close to the former president and his family, particularly to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Blumenthal's reputation is to be combative, and yet in a first person book of this type, he will necessarily be forced to be more reflective. Elisabeth Sifton says that Blumenthal is ''a very, very fine writer'' and that his account will reflect his special position in the White House. ''This is certainly an insider's account, not a journalist's account,'' she says. The writer's attachment to the previous administration has earned him some disrespect from colleagues throughout the media. He is currently estranged from former friend, Vanity Fair writer Christopher Hitchens, because Hitchens signed an affidavit questioning Blumenthal's testimony before Kenneth Starr's grand jury. He has also brought a lawsuit against the Web journalist, Matt Drudge, who accused Blumenthal of spousal abuse. Blumenthal says the accusations are completely false. Drudge issued an apology but the damage was done and the case is ongoing. The author of four previous books, all of which are out of print, Blumenthal will write this one using some notes, but mostly his own ''fairly good memory.'' He never kept a proper diary, he says, as lawyers instructed him not to. Nonetheless, it will ''cover the waterfront,'' he says, including the less savory events in the White House. ================================================================= Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: *Michael Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends ================================================================= <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
