I believe it was April Gelaspie (sp?), then ambassador to Iraq. One the
interesting things was that they sent a woman ambasador (and she didn't
seem much like a Jeanne Kirkpatrick type) to Iraq. She's going to face
down Saddam? That seemed a little wierd to me. However, as I recall, the
actual exchange was not that clear as to what Saddam's intentions were

 There was misunderstanding.

I guess our renowned intelligence system was asleep.

There is no reason to believe
that Bush "suckered" Saddam into anything.

Other than the fact that it's how US foreign policy often works.

  Let's not forget that the
 foolish
Saddam had blithely launched an eight year war against Iran.

I never understood that war to be soley Iraq's doing.

Re: [CTRL] Iraq inspectors seem guilty of spying

1999-01-09 Thread Hilary Thomas

 -Caveat Lector-

It is becoming increasing clear to me that Saddam is being set up. Now,
before people start gnashing teeth, I think one of the reasons he was
"selected" is because of his willingness to the more nefarious things he is
being credited with doing.

Some of you may recall (and my memory is fuzzy on this because it was so
long ago) that a year before the Desert Storm (not Fox) Saddam approached
the US government to mediate a dispute he was having with Kuwait. He said
that they were stealing Iraqi oil (and I don't remember the details of how
this was being done. I believe through the pipeline that runs through
Kuwait). Basically, Bush brushed him off and told Saddam to deal with it
himself. Which, of course, he did.

So, IF Saddam is being set up, I want to know to what end. If it were
simply a matter of "eliminating" him that would have been done long ago
despite being told how difficult it is to locate him.

I think Saddam's claim was the Kuwaitis were engaged in horizontal drilling

Alamaine,

I couldn't remember if it were horizontal drilling or tapping into the
pipeline. In either case, Saddam did make the effort to go through proper
channels. We can only second guess why Bush brushed him off, why he went to
the US (perhaps knowing he wouldn't get assistance??? or it may have been a
genuine request for help). I can't recall if he approached the UN or not.

Fro anyone who wants a real slam-bam book AGAINST the war(s) with Iraq, I
suggest

Desert Slaughter: The Imperialist War Against Iraq
Labor Publications, Inc
ISBN 0929087-54-2
$18.95

Can be obtained from wsws.org

Now, be forewarned there's a LOT of polemically political Socialist
vocabulary (it's their book so they can do this) contained in the articles
that make up the book. It literally chronicles the days before, during and
after DS/DS, through bulletins. There is also a section that tells the
history of the region and the events and circumstances leading up to August
1990. If one can read through the political verbiage (one's own choice to
agree or disagree), it tends to bring up the OTHER side of the push toward
war. Some answers (right or wrong, politically or otherwise) can be found
therein.

Also be mindful that as I recommend the book, I endorse it ONLY from the
standpoint that it does look at the issue from another point of view, a
view that I do not necessarily, specifically, personally endorse.

How about the idea that it was nothing more than the same "trick" that was used to
encourage Hitler to take more territory, or that South Korea was not "in our
sphere of influence," only to use their aggression as an excuse to get into
another war??? Why do such a thing, you ask? Well, could be that the NWO folks
want to establish "credible" precidents for sending NATO (the only official
military force for the NWO at this time) forces to "teach someone a lesson." As I
recall, our Secretary of State met with Saddam when he asked for help in a
squabble with Kuwait (which was an artificial state previously carved out of
Iraq), and told Saddam, "You go ahead and take care of it... We won't interfere."
Seems Saddam wasn't politically astute enough to know that when the USA
politicians tell you something, you should assume the opposite is true. Thus, he
took action, and there was a "ready made excuse" to set a precedent... Remember
Bush saying the war was to "Strengthen the New World Order" or that "out of this,
a New World Order will emerge"???
