Re: [CTRL] MMM violating IRS law (fwd)

2000-05-15 Thread Chris Gaydosh

I think we need to get a few facts straight about yesterday's Million Mom March,
regardless if you agree or disagree with the cause.

First, the US Park Service's estimated total was 750,000. This is peak
attendance, and the total attendance at such rallies is usually 1/3 higher due
to the park service's estimation process. It purposely underestimates, to
include people who do not attend the entire rally and the Mall's average number
of visitors on a given day. Total attendance was likely to be slightly above
one million. I was there.

MMM is exempt from federal taxes because the condition you site applies to
organizations who GIVE money to political candidates , PACs and other entities
(like the NRA, NEA). MMM only encourages persons to vote and support candidates
with their agenda, not for the MMM to fund them . By the way, the NRA, etc. do
not pay most federal taxes, and should, based on the laws you site.

School children are given credit for attending rallies because it exposes them
to their political process, and many schools, public and private, do this on a
regular basis, regardless if the children agree with the rally. It is the act
of seeing a major political rally that is important. Catholic school often send
their entire classes to anti-abortion rallies, and most schools have a strong
stake in reducing gun violence among their students.

MMM tax exempt? Here's something we all can do
 Thu May 11 19:04:53 2000

The Million Mom March is a 501 (c)-3 corporation (Tax Exempt) and as such
are FORBIDDEN to to devote a substantial part of its activities for lobbying
 purposes.

Lobbying is defined as "Carrying on propaganda or otherwise attempting to
 influence legislation."

Lobbying is also defined as "Urging individuals to contact their legislators
to propose, support, or oppose legislation"

The MMM website says "We the Mothers are calling on Congress to enact common
sense legislation by Mother's Day 2000"

The toll free number to contact the IRS fraud hotline is 800-829-0433

Call then today and call them often. The address for the MMM is PO Box 762
Washington, DC 20044 (The IRS will want to know when you call them).

If they loose their tax exempt status they will have to pay Federal
Corporate Income tax, and their supporters will loose their deductions.
