Naked Man Stabs Two
'God sent me to kill,' he screams as he attacks with shears

A naked man brandishing a pair of foot-long scissors and screaming "God sent
me to kill people" stabbed a man and woman in the Bronx early yesterday,
police said. The wild-haired attacker burst into a 24-hour diner, plunged his
shears into a man and then ran several blocks and did the same to a woman
before cops overpowered him.
"I'm just happy to be alive," said victim Carlos Pinales, 23, stabbed in the
New Capitol Restaurant on W. Kingsbridge Road at 4:16 a.m., just after he
ordered breakfast. "The guy was crazy, like a devil, with all his hair
standing up," said diner owner George Vangelatos, 65. "I'll never forget his
face."
Diner patrons threw forks, knives, glasses and food at the deranged man,
chasing him out the door. He ran several blocks and then stabbed 41-year-old
Lydia Rivera in the chest on the corner of W. 190th St. and Davidson Ave.
Officers from the 52nd Precinct found him there, covered with blood and
hiding behind a parked car. Screaming in Spanish about his esposa - his wife
- he grabbed a patrol car door, vowing to kill a female cop if she opened it.
Not even a burst of pepper spray stopped him. He dropped the scissors but
lunged at the officers. Then he hovered inches from Rivera, who lay
critically wounded on the sidewalk, shrieking, "Don't let him touch me." "He
had so much blood on him he was kind of slippery," said Officer Jenara
Everleth, 25. Her partner, Officer Mike Falcon, ended the standoff by pulling
the deranged man across Davidson Ave., where cops handcuffed him. But he
still had some fight left, kicking out the patrol car's rear passenger side
window.
Pinales, wounded in the side, was listed in stable condition at Jacobi
Medical Center. Rivera was at the same hospital in critical but stable
condition. Detectives checked with the veterans hospital and local homeless
shelters, but no one knew the mystery attacker. He gave his name as Miguel
Rodriguez and said he was 37 years old. He rambled to cops that he was God
and Rivera was his wife. She told police she had never met him before.
Police opened a missing person's case on the dark-haired, bearded man, who is
about 5-feet-9 and weighs 170 pounds. He was taken to North Central Bronx
Hospital and then to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Police
charged him with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a
weapon.
