Actually it looked more like an IMplosion (which is what is done to
demolish buildings) rather than an EXplosion...

Nope, a jetliner full of fuel would have been enough. They had the
architect on NBC explaining the design of the Towers -- they had a
central core (which acted as a chimney in the 1993 bombing, quickly
spreading smoke to the upper floors), and the main support was via the
outer 'skin', which was anchored by steel supports at each corner
(picture a steel tube running from the ground level to the top floor)...
The steel supports were designed to withstand a fire lasting 1 to 2 hours
before becoming so hot that they would melt, causing a collapse...which
is exactly what happened.
To explain it another way, the Towers had no real central support, the
main support being supplied via the outer walls, specifically the
vertical tubular steel 'girders' on which the floors were anchored. The
central portion of the buildings were an empty core holding the elevator
shafts.
Therefore when any fire hit either tower, smoke and flame could rapidly
spread via the central core (a major defect in design, IMO); heat would
build up until the vertical girders at each corner finally melted and
gave way. When the girders finally gave way it would cause the upper
floors to pancake onto the floors below, basically causing its own
implosion.
Everyone is now waxing nostalgic over the WTC towers, but I remember when
it was first proposed and was first being built -- it was quite
controversial, was almost universally hated by most New Yorkers, and
there were many questions regarding its safety in a fire
