Correct me if I'm wrong but Gore would only be precluded from running for
reelection in
2004, due to constitutional amendment passed after F.D.R.'s 4 terms.

Yes...which has lead me to wonder if perhaps there's 'something' which
the Dems are afraid may come out in the impeachment trial which may lead
to Gore's impeachment...
The only other thing they may have feared would have been if Clinton was
removed from office, or resigned, before January 20th, in which case Gore
would be precluded from running for the presidency in 2000...but it seems
now the process will go beyond the 19th, in which case if Gore ends up
in 'the cat birds seat', he can still run for the office in 2000...
A move which would -- on the surface -- seem to put the Dems in an
advantageous position...so one has to wonder if their bleatings regarding
'overthrowing the past 2 elections' is so much smoke and mirrors, or if
it reflects fear of something deeper being exposed that may just possibly
put the 2000 elections in the laps of the Republicans...
It may explain why they don't want witnesses at the impeachment trial...

Exactly.
Heck...let's just set up an online kangaroo court, and let 'justice' be
meted out via all and sundry voting on the Internet...
And before any of you who think such would be a good idea jump up and say
so -- just remember that public opinion sways from one end of the
spectrum to the other ever generation or so...so the public opinion you
may agree with today will be diametrically opposed to you in another 20
years or so...
