From: "davidsquires", [EMAIL PROTECTED] Some of the most enjoyable shooting matches I have ever shot in were the falling plate rifle matches and their pistol equivalent the Bargrave Dean Tiles match at Bisley each Services Meeting. They always attracted a crowd and were enjoyed by shooters and spectators alike. I am sure that they would make good TV. Sadly, I have also often met the po-faced attitude described in several of the postings on this subject. These attitudes often came from 22 rifle shooters but I have also encountered them from muzzle loading rifle shooters. One such attitude by a club secretary resulted in the whole club being shut down temporarily. This character did not like pistol shooters/ing and got the local range licensing officer along to look at the range because he (the secretary) thought that the range was not suitable for pistol shooting (angles etc. for shooting off-hand) You're quite right said the licensing officer, and the angles for rifle shooting are inadequate too. He shut the whole range complex down until major works were undertaken on the range banking. The prat involved, needless to say, was not popular but apparently retained his appointment; presumably with the support of enough like-minded individuals. From: "Nicholas Jones", [EMAIL PROTECTED] It's been the experience at the Wrexham RPC that younger shooters enjoy the steel plate events, and they provide a fun entry into more 'serious' events such as Bianchi and 1500. They organise 2 of the UK's biggest such comps, the 'Wrexham Steel Challenge' and the '3 Gun Challenge', both held at Minsterley ranges (late July and Easter weekend respectively). If you didn't go this year, try to go next year. It's worth the journey. This Chistlehurst event was inspired by the Wrexham one. There was a write-up of the first one in a magazine some time back. Again, much was made of how in was good for introducing young members to shooting/competitions. So much for encouraging beginners, then. Nik Jones Llangollen, UK -- I like steel plate shooting, especially man v. man, it's tricky to do on some indoor ranges though, the bullets zip all over the place after they hit the plate. Steve. I used to shoot there on occasion about 14 years ago when I was heavily into Small bore. Nice enough range as I remember and I think exclusively Small bore although including pistol. Shot some enjoyable comps there in a reasonably friendly atmosphere although Small bore shooters in that area and at that time could be fairly sniffy about other disciplines. Especially anything involving running about or speed shooting ("bloody cowboys"). One would like to think that things had changed but apparently not. From: "Daryll Brownjohn", [EMAIL PROTECTED] Having been down to the NRA Gallery Champs, this last weekend... and seeing the interest shown in the pay-and-play Plate Shoot set up by Steve Smoothie... i can only agree with Steve... that steel plates are great fun!! i invested several รบ coins, and a couple of hundred rnds trying to beat the fastest time... Something like plates is a very visual sport..and might be good for attracting people to the sportit would also make good TV viewing Maybe the answer would be for someone to organise a large Plate Shoot event along the "Starshot" linesand invite the media. ... just a thought... Regards, Daryll Brownjohn -- There are lots of steel plate events in the US, and ESPN covers them. Steve. From: "Alex Hamilton", [EMAIL PROTECTED] Steve, I have heard today that St. Nicholas Club in Chislehurst, cancelled an Open Day Shoot and wrote to each entrant explaining that "they did not wish to be associated with plate shooting". I have to confess that, having shoot plates once, I found it rather boring but there was nothing there to make me wish not to "associate myself" with that form of shooting. Have I missed something? Alex -- Huh? And huh again? I think shooting steel plates is great fun, more of it the better I say, and all I can say is that this club in Chislehurst must be staffed by a bunch of boring old farts!
