RE: Cron problem
I had the same CRON problem. Got struckup. I was about send this same requets to cygwin. As you wanted, here is the event log info that I captured from my Windows 2000 system after setting up cygwin cron. I noticed that following is the event type generated in event logs. The time stamp of this event matches with the time, when I run 'crontab -e' to edit the crontab entries with some vi or so, which is invoked by 'crontab -e', but not with the time stamp when the cron is supposed to triggered in the crontab. --- cut --- The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( crontab ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: crontab : Win32 Process Id = 0x5AC : Cygwin Process Id = 0x41C : (Administrator) LIST (Administrator). --- cut --- To know mnore about how to look into event log, here is the help window contents from Win2000: Notes: To open Event Viewer, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer. Look for Application Events, as I could not find any relavant system events that match our cron test time stamps. This event also happens when I setup crontab in any other way like what is described in the previous email. No event log is reported, when the cron is supposed to execute, cron job was not run at all. This cron setup needs something to do with Windows Registry, since Windows has come up with some fancy "Microsoft Scheduler" kind of thing, which our cron should be able internally use it. Any info on how to make this cron work, will be of great help to us all. ssh working but only for some accounts..
i got cygwin running on a standalone NT i did the mkpasswd -l -g > /etc/passwd i looked at the passwd and group files, and tehy seemed ok... so the problem is that i got some accounts that can ssh in fine and some that i get permission denied.. like the 2 below: foo::1000:513:foo user,S-1-5-21-407062282-1326474038-4547331-1000:/home/edi:/bin/bash test::1002:513:test,S-1-5-21-407062282-1326474038-4547331-1002:/home/test:/bin/bash the foo works fine but the test dont... why? i mean they are the same.and in NT they are both same too, belong to group users and as far as i can tell they are identical...so how come one logs in and the other get permission denied?.. :( do i have to do a passwd after that? or does cygwin reads the passwd in the NT machine..but that doesnt explain why one will work and the other doesnt.. help plz __ Do You Yahoo!? Listfolk: I have finally achieved a working sshd on Win2k w/FAT filesystems. Also, cygrunsrv appears to be functioning properly. Steps taken were: 1) Created links for Cygwin's var, tmp, usr, etc, and bin dir's in c:/ (in other words, these dir's are hanging off of /). Both srvany and cygrunsrv appear to require these, else cygrunsrv returns the "Service did not return an error" message, and does not start. 2) A reference on another site tipped me off here - the sites used procedures which evoked sshd *without* a sshd_config file. vt100 fonts (box characters) and terminal emulation
In short: What is the path of least resistance to improve the terminal emulation and character display in my cygwin shell window or rxvt? In long: I use a commercial package for SSH called SecureCRT which comes with some fonts called "vt100" that have those nice ncurses line drawing characters in them. It also has what I assume to be the equivalent of a termcap entry for "linux." I am trying to get away from it however. I tried to use 'rxvt -reverseVideo -fn "Terminal" -e bash' and run the ncurses-tests in /usr/bin/ncurses-test-dll/ and was unsatisfied with the results. I tried several other fixed width fonts that were by default on my system. I also tried just the regular cygwin.bat's terminal. Perhaps someone has gotten cygwin shell or rxvt to emulate a linux terminal or xterm better before and can save me some headache? Midnight Commander mc-4.5.55
I am trying to compile mc 4.5.55 with no luck. First, it complained I did not have glib so I tried to install that. However, glib complained I did not have pkgconfig. I downloaded the latest version of pkgconfig and I can't get that to install either. I read the instructions and typed "./configure" then "make" then "make install". I get a variety of errors and eventually, it does not work. These are the packages I tried to install: pkgconfig-0.8.0.tar.gz glib-1.3.11.tar.gz mc-4.5.55.tar.gz 1. Is it possible to install mc under cygwin? 2. Does anyone know where I can some binaries to avoid compiling it myself? 3. How can I tell what other packages I need to get pkgconfig and glib to install? I have attached my current cygcheck in case it is helpful to anyone. Regards, rotaiv. PS - I have deliberately not installed all the packages. Therefore, I would like to resolve these problems by only installing the required packages. Re: Font size and color for rxvt
Rotaiv, This has now acquired the status of a perennial question, so searching the archives will yield several informative messages. Also, if you read the man page, then you must not have read it very carefully, because it's quite clear about setting the fonts. It won't explain the funkiness with some fonts and scaling and whatnot, but the mail messages and some experimentation will bring you up to speed with that. Here's an invocation I use in a Taskbar shortcut: 'D:\cygwin\bin\rxvt.exe -g 120x99+732+0 -bg #55 -fg #ee -fn "Lucida Console-11" -sr -sl 5000 -vb -e /bin/bash --login -i" Here's another: "D:\cygwin\bin\rxvt.exe -g 120x91+853+0 -bg #55 -fg #ee -fn "Andale Mono-12" -sr -sl 5000 -vb -e /bin/bash --login -i" (You'll need a screen in 1600x1200 resolution for these sizes and positions to work and fairly good vision, if my coworkers' constant squinting is any indication.) The Andale version crams a lot of text in a given bit of screen real estate, but the Andale font is not included with Windows (at least through 2000, I don't know about XP). It is available by no-cost download from Microsoft. You'll find information about this in the mail archives, too. Good luck. Does anyone know how to change the color and font size with rxvt? I read the FAQ and MAN pages and they talk about the font resize button (ALT ->) but that does not work. They also mention configuration files that I do not have with my installation of cygwin. Also, if I use RXVT instead of the CMD.EXE to run bash, what switches should I use? Is there > anything special that I need to do to get it to work? I've also tried to compile openldap 2.0.18 on cygwin. I resolved the configure issue by just commenting out the respective section ;-B; finally I know that regexp is there and I don't need configure to guess around. I've included the 'patched' configure-script. In this forma it runs successfully on my system. But even then openldap refuses to compile completely. Compilation breaks in the server part. When linking slapd I get the following error message: "Warning: resolving _gdbm_errno by linking to __imp__gdbm_errno (auto-import) nmth00.o(.idata$4+0x0): undefined reference to `_nm__gdbm_errno'" libgdbm is in the library list. This *may* be just an issue of sequence of libraries but I don't know. As I currently only need the client part (ldapsearch for integration in emacs) I didn't check out how to 'repair' openldap for cygwin. The needed client parts are correctly compiled. Please note that there is a MSVC .dsp file in the 'build'-subdirectory. Perhaps it is usable, but I didn't try. Just a quick thought about firewalls and ssh'ing through them.. We had a firewall that allowed https-connections, and well, you can use this to connect to a ssh-server, by telling ssh to use a wrapper script to fire up the connection, get in touch with me and I can dig it up.. Meanwhile, using a socks server, well basically it should be up to the application, not cygwin to handle this, so if you find a cvs supporting socks off you go.. :-) /Andy -- The eye of the beholder rests on the beauty! -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwin.com/bugs.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/

I don't blame you -- it's very irritating > to be "talked down to" as if one was a child playing with adult toys. > Want to know why I took such an abrasive tone? Sorry for my tone. In fact, I like RPM and would like very much to see my beloved Cygwin support RPM packages (natively or not). The reason is rather selfish : I would like to start an RPM installation project for PHP code (for libraries and applications, not the executable itself). Communities (PEAR, BinaryCloud) propose XML based installation solutions. In my humble opinion, the proposed solutions will never reach the power of RPM. As a result, existing PHP libraries are not widely reused/shared by common programs. For example, PhpMyAdmin and PhpPgAdmin do not make an extensive use of common libraries. People start several projects that come down to the same things (i.e. PhpOracleAdmin, PhpMyAdmin, ..., Nuke, PowerNuke, etc...). Another example is pgAdmin, the windows administration interface of PostgreSQL that I contribute to. We use an $ installation program which does not have the power and flexibility of RPM. Furthermore, pgAdmin is based on pgSchema (abstraction layer) which could be installed and maintained as a separete library if we had RPM. OK, I stop here as this is not the Cygwin concern. The need for RPM under Windows is general. The power of RPM is to be able to share material. Any RPM solution under Windows is welcome (based on Cygwin or not). Also, thank you all for this great Cygwin software. I hope to be one day able to install KDE2 from Cygwin... I've uploaded fortune-1.8-1 to the Cygwin net distribution. When fortune is run with no arguments it prints out a random epigram. And VCDEasy (http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcdeasy.htm) full version only -- by virtue of the fact that it includes cdrdao and vcdimager inside, and each of THOSE violates cygwin's GPL...VCDEasy.exe *itself* does not appear to be a cygwin app. Worse, the executables for vcdimager AND for cdrdao that vcdeasy distributes contain some code that checks for cygwin1.dll IN THE EXE's DIRECTORY and ***quits*** if it is removed, even if cygwin1.dll exists in the system PATH. That is, they not only deliberately ignore the system cygwin1.dll even if the windows runtime loader finds it, but they also REQUIRE two spearate copies of cygwin1.dll -- one in the vcdimager subfolder and another in the cdrdao subfolder. Re: bash/cmd CTRL-C problem...
Hi, sorry for following up myself, but I found out that Cygwin equally handles CTRL-BREAK and CTRL-C by sending a SIGINT to the process. See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gnu-win32/message/27643 (last sentence). This seems to be the source of the problem. CTRL-BREAK under the cmd shell terminates the process after handling the signal without further executing any code. The bad thing is that under bash the same behaviour follows from pressing CTRL-BREAK _and_ CTRL-C !! If this is a design issue, can someone please explain what the reasons are... We have an application that forks other processes. The main thread is waiting for the signal handler to return in order to cleanly stop the child processes. By just stopping the parent process the child processes keep running and I have to kill them manually each time I press CTRL-C. The same application is working fine under windows cmd shell and bash under Linux , HP-UX 10/11, AIX4.x, and SunOS 2.5+... Please help, I don't want to use the stupid windows cmd shell ;-) Michael - Original Message - From: "Michael Rumpf" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, December 20, 2001 7:47 AM Subject: bash/cmd CTRL-C problem... > Hi, > > I'm new to the list and I don't know if this problem is already solved, but > I couldn't find a hint neither on the archives nor on the FAQ or somewhere > else on the net. > > My problem is related to bash/cmd and signal handling. > In my app I installed a signal handler for SIGINT. Re: sscanf %as broken (was: linking with glut32.lib?)
The man page of the glibc sscanf explains it all - see this: a Indicates that the conversion will be s, the needed memory space for the string will be malloc'ed and the pointer to it will be assigned to the char pointer variable, which does not have to be initialised before. This flag does not exist in ANSI C. In other words this is a glibc artifact and cygwin uses newlib as its C runtime library.
