Only one is appropriate: "Install from internet". Essentially, at this
point, you should just be running Setup and clicking on Next repeatedly.
Don't make any decisions other than that.

problem with setting up tcsh as default shell

2002-10-21 Thread mike parks
hi,

i am having trouble setting tcsh as my default shell. cygwin does not
seem to pick up the settings in the .tcshrc from my $HOME directory.

i started with the default profile and csh.cshrc files that came with
the cygwin download.

i noticed that cygwin seemed to start the bash shell from cygwin.bat. so
i replaced the 'bash...' line with 'tcsh'.

as a matter of course i tried changing the syntax of the profile file to
more
tcsh/csh style as it appeared to be sh style thinking that may be the
problem but to no avail.

i added echo commands to the profile and .tcshrc files to see if they were
being executed but i never see the echo's coming out.

i would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

thanks
dazed and confused

mike

I don't recall requesting that anybody fix this problem. And I apologize if my
rate of information flow regarding said problem is too slow; I have many
masters, and Cygwin too often has to wait.

I just tried that, again.

I ran the setup.exe and uninstalled. Deleted all directories.

Then I went to web site, and Install Now.
Install Base e:\cygwin
Install directory: e:\cygwindownload

Same thing again, only lib, tmp and usr directories (and sub directories).

Is there something in the registry I need to clean?

I've downloaded from nasa.gov and from another site, same thing.

I'm clueless.

I find it best to simply set this in your regular Windows environment. That
way, regardless of how you end up invoking cygwin prog's you get the same
behavior.

I suspect it's the latter. I personally never use the batch file anymore, and
can't think of a reason why it would still be necessary or desireable,
especially with rxvt working well these days.

Hmm. After all of the discussion resulting from your original mention
of documentation patches, I wouldn't have expected that you'd be
surprised by the lack of ChangeLog or sending patches against the wrong
source.

However, thanks for the changes. Joshua, are you willing to try to

Re: YA in the "try a snapshot" series (was Re: latest cvs fork problems)

2002-10-21 Thread Christopher Faylor
Try setting the heap_chunk_size back down to 256M.

The stack dump is just the result of the abort in fork.cc which was
caused by the memory error so it isn't very useful. Thanks for decoding
it, though.

True.  However,

1.3.13: makewhatis errors due to chmod

2002-10-21 Thread Mark Connell
On WinXP when I run /usr/sbin/makewhatis -w I get the messages:
bash$ [Administrator] makewhatis -w
chmod: changing permissions of `/tmp/whatis800': Invalid argument
chmod: changing permissions of `/usr/man/whatis': Invalid argument
chmod: changing permissions of `/usr/local/man/whatis': Invalid argument
chmod: changing permissions of `/usr/ssl/man/whatis': Invalid argument

Looking at the source there are commands to perform chmod on some dirs.
I have CYGWIN=ntsec in my cygwin.bat as follows:
-
@echo off
D:
chdir D:\cygwin\bin
set CYGWIN=ntsec
set PATH=/usr/sbin:/cygdrive/d/WINDOWS/system32
bash --login -i
-

So, as the FAQ suggests to run makewhatis to build the whatis db, what
is the solution?

Mark

Some more info on this:
I defined CVS_RMDIR to point to my own function that would print a message
and then fork and exec /bin/rmdir with the directory as an argument, and
recompiled cvs. Running cvs commit now resulted in the following:

$ /usr/src/cvs-1.11.0/build/src/cvs commit -m ""
Checking in ;
/export/home/igor/testrepository/,v  <--
new revision: 1.11; previous revision: 1.10
done
Attempting to remove directory '/export/home/igor/testrepository/#cvs.lock'
rmdir: `/export/home/igor/testrepository/#cvs.lock': Permission denied
cvs commit: failed to remove lock dir /export/home/igor/testrepository/#cvs.lock: I/O
error
$ /bin/rmdir /export/home/igor/testrepository/#cvs.lock
$ echo $?
0
$

Any ideas on how to proceed with this would be welcome.

search for the users configuration files! It always uses the
value of the pw_dir field in /etc/passwd as the home directory."

Running as the desired user should be enough

More broken under cygwin-1.3.13-2?

2002-10-21 Thread Huang.
I update cygwin to 1.3.13-2, but found more works incorrect. It just
showed one page and then broken. I change back to 1.3.12-4, and it works
fine.
And, under cygwin 1.3.13-2, dumper does not work too, when update
libintl2 from 0.11.2-2 to 0.11.5-1, because of function dcgettext__ no
longer in cygintl-2.dll.
Does anyone have these problems too?

Thanks!

RE: cygwin cron

2002-10-21 Thread Igor Pechtchanski
Smithesh,

The fact that scp works for you from the command line doesn't necessarily
mean it will work from cron. Ssh and scp look in $HOME/.ssh for public
keys. Cron runs as SYSTEM, with a blank (or default) environment. Even
if you set the effective uid to you (which you actually may not be doing,
from what I could see), scp will not know where to look for the public
keys if $HOME is not set to your home directory, and therefore will not
try to authenticate you. Please make sure that 1) cron switches to your
uid, and 2) your $HOME is set correctly. You can do that by scheduling an
appropriate shell script to run through cron. If this is indeed your
problem, you could define the appropriate environment before running scp
in your perl script (or a shell script).

RE: cygwin cron

2002-10-21 Thread Smithesh Ramachandran
Thanks. I did look at the FAQ s'. I haven't seen any of these specifics.

I'm trying to scp files through cygwin cron (running on windows 2000) to
Linux(redhat 72 kernal 2.4.7-10). And I'm running linux on pIII.

The open_ssh version on Linux is OpenSSH_2.9p2. And I run sshd on linux on
ports 9989 through (i'm not using the default port 22). The version on
Cygwin is OpenSSH_3.4p1. I don't think the problem is with ssh/scp. Because
it works fine on cygwin, and I'm able to scp files without giving
passphrases (but using dsa public/private keys). But scp itself is not
working through cygwin cron.

I have done the following to install and start:

$cygrunsrv -I cron -p /usr/sbin/cron -a -D
$cygrunsrv -S cron

Did the following on permission:
$ chmod 1777 /var/cron
$ chmod 1777 /var/cron/tabs

Cron is running : (see below)
$ ps -ef|grep cron
  SYSTEM 5361336   ?  10:24:55 /usr/sbin/cron

Attaching the output for cygcheck -r -s -v

Please let me know if you need anything more.

Thanks,
Smithesh.

Hi ,
I'm trying to scp (without pass phrases) using dsa on cygwin cron.
scp works fine, but not within cron.

this is what I'm doing -

crontab -e

00 * * * * /usr/bin/perl /home/admin/perl/test.pl  >>  /tmp/test.txt

and this is what test.pl has:

#!/usr/bin/perl

system('scp -P 9989 -oProtocol=2 -r /cygdrive/b/IN
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:tmp/.');

When I run test.pl by itself on cygwin command line, it works (meaning
it does the scp), but not within cron.

Also tried putting scp stmt itself within cron and didn't work either.
I also tried removing, installing, stopping and starting cron using
cygrunsrv. cron in general works, but is not doing the above scp stuff.
I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong.. Help..
Thanks,
Smithesh.

Igor,

let me back up a little here. i am trying to setup my pc at home as a work

it
was already done.

so some of the things you ask about i am not certain, like the glob.

how can i tell if it works?

the filenames are

thanks for the help Igor.

Hmmm, there is a prerelease of GCC 3 available which you can fetch
when hitting the 'Exp' radiobutton in setup.exe GUI, there is much
better C++ support with GCC 3. The old GCC 2 version is also updated
to have better C++ support and is called gcc2 now.

Abe, is this also updated for Cygwin? Is there at least a README.cygwin
included in the sources?

Strange, it should link against libxerces-c2_1_0.dll.

Abe provides also a binary package (until xerces-c will be included in
the Cygwin netrelease):

aclocal wrapper fails because -x check fails (something to do with ntsec ?)

2002-10-21 Thread amores perros
My thanks to Gen Zhang for explaining to me how to get to
NTFS file permissions, and I will try experimenting with them shortly.

However, I still tend to believe that something is wrong, because:

#1)
I believe the -x test in the aclocal wrapper is failing
(thus telling me aclocal is unavailable),

#2)
yet I can actually execute the aclocal myself manually, eg,
/usr/autotool/devel/bin/aclocal

So I can manually step through my autogen script, running the
devel versions directly instead of using the wrappers, except
then I hit a probably similar problem with autoconf (it can't
find autom4te) that I've not explored yet -- I imagine I need
to find some wrapper for autom4te to bypass as well.

My thought is that there is a disconnect between the -x test
in the aclocal wrapper (/usr/bin/aclocal) and what happens
when I interactively execute the devel aclocal script.

Cordially,

Perry

Hi,

sorry to bother you directly - I found (via google) an entry of yours in a
discussion group regarding a problem with WinSCP:

(Quote:"I don't seem to be able to run scp. I install a window scp client

I have the same problem (but am quite a beginner in playing with servers in
general, and Linux in particular), so I was wondering, if you have found a
solution to the problem? If so, what do I need to do to fix it?

Thanks a million in advance for your help,

Repeat after me: don't open old threads.
However I'll let you off this once, because you are using a newsreader and
I've made the same mistake before.

If you think copy on write is faster, then feel free to do some tests. A
website with some nice pretty graphs, and source code would be great. I can
send you some code for starters, I'm sure Chris Faylor has some around too.
It may well be that both of us were simply not doing the right tests.
My tests were based on timing a single process that allocated a large region
of memory, then forked in a loop. Each forked process touched the memory
allocated earlier by overwriting it with a random value.

Re: Copy-on-write fork

2002-10-21 Thread Sven Köhler
A test program and statistics are shown below which clearly show Cygwin's
fork implementation in the lead.

how much memory did your programs allocate prior to fork()ing?
copy-on-write might only apply to applications with high memory-usage.

another thing i didn't understand was, why you took a the real-time for
mesuring?

i can do "time mc" and exit mc after 10sec and time will show real-time
10sec but the _real cpu-time_ is below <1sec.
the CPU-times consumed by the copy-on-write-implemention is _lower_ than
cygwin-implementation's CPU-time.

so why are you guys worried?

Re: setup / installation via cdrom: solved

Dear Igor Pechtchanski, you wrote:

Aargh! How come I didn't try that myself??? Probably because of the E:\release
bug in setup. Anyway, your suggestion solved the problem: now that the
packages are in E:\cygwin\release, and I set the download directory to
E:\cygwin, everything starts as expected.

I have to add that in my opinion the information offered by setup is a bit
confusing: after specifying that you want to install from a local directory,
it is a bit confusing to have setup tell you that you should `select a
directory where you want Setup to store the installation files it
downloads...'. What downloading? After all, you already downloaded the files
and burned them on a CD.

I think it would be less confusing if the program would be asking you to
specify the parent-directory of the `release' directory.

But apart from all this: many thanks to Igor and all others who reacted to
my question.

Problem Identified: cvs hangs over ssh (all versions?)

2002-10-21 Thread Matthew Dornquast
I recently started having a problem that hundreds of others have documented
over the last year or so.

When doing cvs commands like "cvs co " it hangs on the very last
file.

This only happens when you're using cygwin over SSH. (Sourceforge
recommends you do just that)

The problem occurs when you turn on compression. In my case, I had added
the line:

cvs -z3 -q -e vi

to my .cvsrc file located in my home directory.

Simply removing the "-z3" eliminated the problem.

Hope this helps clear up the issues/mysteries around this bug.

~Matthew

Personally, I watch the list and am more careful now about upgrading a box I use in
production. This can be intimidating to new users, especially when the "norm" is to
expect a Setup program to present you with Release Notes.

Cygwin reminds me of running the "testing" tree of Debian: something is updated every
day, and by participating in this tree you assume a higher level of risk than "usual"
Windows software.

I think what is sorely needed is a "tagged release", or bundled packages. The way this
could work is you are locked into a version set, and can add and remove packages
without always getting the "latest" code. The benefit here would be a set of "known
issues" for the release, and a proper set of Release Notes could be made for each
release.

I get the impression patches for "releases" and "show release notes" would be accepted
(things I couldn't offer).

Post-install script problems with latest snapshot

2002-10-21 Thread Jason Tishler
Sorry, but I'm not sure how useful this post will be...

With the latest snapshot (i.e., 2002-Oct-20) installed, I got a bunch of
"can't read memory address foo" dialogs from things like basename, cp,
rm, etc. while the post-install scripts were running.

FWIW, here is the list of post-install scripts that were run:

/etc/postinstall/cygwin-doc-postinstall.sh
/etc/postinstall/emacs.sh
/etc/postinstall/enscript.sh
/etc/postinstall/gettext-devel.sh
/etc/postinstall/gnupg.sh
/etc/postinstall/passwd-grp.sh
/etc/postinstall/pinfo.sh
/etc/postinstall/post-lilypond.sh
/etc/postinstall/post-texmf.sh
/etc/postinstall/profile.sh
/etc/postinstall/readline.sh
/etc/postinstall/tcp_wrappers.sh
/etc/postinstall/tidy.sh
/etc/postinstall/update-info-dir.sh

Of course, after setup.exe was finished, the above commands behaved
normally again.

/u/home permissions for new users' directories

2002-10-21 Thread Gene C. Ruzicka
i have cygwin installed on a w2k machine in the administrator account. to
give power users access cygwin. i've used the "mkpasswd -l > passwd"
command as explained in the user's guide. but when the power users try
to log in, they're told that they have no permission to create a home directory
in /u/home . btw, i've assigned the power users to group 547 by modifying
the passwd file, as per corinna's suggestion in the user's guide. note that this
problem doesn't occur when giving cygwin access to an administrator
user.

i seem to be able to get around this problem by having an administrator
create the power user home directory in /u/home, and then giving full ownership
of the directory to the power user using the w2k permissions utilities. but
this seems like an involved procedure--i find the w2k permissions utilities
painful to use. am i doing this correctly, and/or is
there a simpler way to give the power user (or any other user)
the required access to the administrator /u/home directory?
i couldn't find anything about this issue in the user's guide or in the
mailing list archives.

Re: Cut and Paste

2002-10-21 Thread Randall R Schulz
Alan,

Assuming you're using Cygwin in a so-called "console" Window, which is the
default (the alternative being RXVT), you probably want to enable
"QuickEdit" mode. Access the window properties dialog (click on the small
Cygwin icon at the left of the window frame) and select "Properties." In
that dialog, activate the "Options" tab and active the "QuickEdit Mode"
check-box on the bottom right.

When (if) you confirm this dialog, you'll be asked whether you want this
change applied to the "... current window only", or to the "... shortcut
that started this window." If you did not start that shell via a shortcut,
then the long-term choice will be "... for future windows with same title."
Assuming you don't want to go through this ritual each time you open a new
Cygwin window, choose the appropriate long-term option.

Now you'll be able to use the mouse to select text blocks and use the right
button to copy those selections to the Windows clipboard.

cygwin cron

2002-10-21 Thread Smithesh Ramachandran
Hi ,
I'm trying to scp (without pass phrases) using dsa on cygwin cron.
scp works fine, but not within cron.

this is what I'm doing -

crontab -e

00 * * * * /usr/bin/perl /home/admin/perl/test.pl  >>  /tmp/test.txt

and this is what test.pl has:

#!/usr/bin/perl

system('scp -P 9989 -oProtocol=2 -r /cygdrive/b/IN
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:tmp/.');

Help..
Thanks,
Smithesh.

Yes, apologies for the misinfo but I had a very similar if not the same
problem with the snapshot. And I did a local rebuild to test ahould
have mentioned this.

FYI
A locally built DLL from Oct 15 CVS files did not have this behavior

RE: cygwin use report: vexec, UML, off-topic X rave

2002-10-21 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi David,

I just wanted to make two comments based on your observations below.

  1. File extensions are already optional on NT-based platforms.
Originally,
 Cygwin didn't enforce ".exe" for exectuables. This was added for 9x/Me
 support and will likely remain until these systems fall into disuse.

  2. Based on the above, it's not clear that there's a big win to "adding
 resources" to address this limitation for 9x/Me. However, since this
 is an open-source project, if volunteers appeared that wanted to pursue
 this, I expect the list would consider their patches. That's generally
 the way the Cygwin project "adds resources". I know, it's a little
 different than at work. ;-)

Glad Cygwin is working for you. :-)

Subject: cygwin use report: vexec, UML, off-topic X rave

I have been using the cygwin environment for a month now and have these
things to report and recommend.

All in all, it has worked surprisingly well. I have been developing
CLI and socket-based C applications for a unix target system with no
bumps at all.

SKIP DOWN A BIT TO AVOID DISCUSSION OF X

The demonstration of KDE appearing but then being impossible to use
is impressive -- but only as a demonstration.

A better X server for the windows platform would, in my opinion, throw
up a new windows window for each X client, rather than being a nested
server like Xnest or the old standby, Micro-images MIX. Does cygwin
KDE work against Microimages MIX? that is an interesting question I
have not explored. I wonder how much glue is required to provide
a transparent x-client-as-windows-window translation.  I know I
used a Novell product for windows 3.11 in 1995 that did that trick,
although not as robustly as could be desired; and I suspect that
window-as-window might be a mode that WeirdX can run in. WeirdX, being
a java application, is resource-intensive, but it can run on the
vendor-provided JIT Java compiler instead of casting Xfree86 into a
windows window.

I see that patching xfree to put each client in its own win32 window
is on the cygwin/X to-do list. Good.

END XFREE SECTION

BEGIN RANT ABOUT FILE NAME EXTENSIONS AND POSIX

The whole thing with the filename extensions seems surprising that there
cannot be a workaround. So what if a program I compile into myprog
cannot be invoked from the cmd shell because it doesn't have a .exe
extension; we have control over Cygwin BASH, can we not make Cygwin BASH
  respect permission bits and magic numbers and hash-bangs instead of
passing things to cmd.exe? At that point, DJB install scripts and so on
  might start working without as much porting.

Maybe this could be done by using a cygwin vexec rather than a native
exec of some kind for launching new pids, that would fix the cause
instead of the symptom, and less porting would be required in idividual
packages.

Another direction is OS compatibility drivers. Could cygwin absorb a
project such as LINE that is designed to allow linux executables to run
under windows?

I guess I'm suggesting that the cygwin shell gets extended to absorb the
execution method selection function that unix users are used to getting
from the kernel, instead of using the windows kernel's mechanism, which
is based on filename extensions instead of permission bits, magic
numbers, and hashbangs.

This would means the cygwin bash, instead of executing with a simple
fork and vexec (or whatever it does) would have to do a lot of the work
of the vexec itself:

it would launch a dispatcher program that would examine the target
filename and determine what to do with it, such as loading and executing
  it, or respecting the hashbang and loading and executing a shell
program, etc.

Then all the .exe extensions on the cygwin toolkit could be dropped, or
made optional if the tools are invoked from the cygwin shell.

This extending of the cygwin shell is in my opinion a high priority
item, since it will eliminate most of the porting issues currently open
if you want to port something like DJBDNS to cygwin. I want to port
DJBDNS to cygwin so I can use the utilities in it, and currently doing
that means unwrapping several layers of DJB script abstraction and
compiling pieces directly instead of running an install script. If
cygwin BASH were extended to treat non-extended filenames the way a
POSIX developer expects the files to get treated -- magic numbers and
hashbangs instead of extensions -- I expect that the install script in a
DJB package might start working just fine, at least until it tries to
edit the /etc/inittab file.

END VEXEC RANT

How about dedicating some resources to getting user-mode linux to
compile and run under cygwin? That might solve a lot of problems.
Or maybe it wouldn't.

Re: Is cygwin newlib reentrant??

On 10/15/2002 11:41 PM, Anurag Sharma wrote:

Well, what the -DREENTRANT_SYSCALLS_PROVIDED does is to compile newlib
so that guaranteed reentrant versions of certain system calls are
provided, with a "_r" tacked on to their names. E.g. gmtime() and
gmtime_r(). localtime() and localtime_r().

And when I run "nm /usr/lib/libc.a | grep _r", I see these entry points.
So on a wild guess, yes, I'd say that the cygwin newlib has been
compiled with -DREENTRANT_SYSCALLS_PROVIDED.

While this isn't something that 'patch -R' can't handle (or that patch

Re: install xerces-c-src2_1_0 under cygwin

2002-10-21 Thread Abraham Backus
1) gcc 3.2 was released this week via setup.exe (i.e. you don't need to do
"Exp" anymore)
2) I'll write up a bug on getting the build instructions updated. This is a
task that I had meant to get to, but wasn't sure whether to do that first or
get the cygwin package built and deployed.
3) I have an idea of why it isn't linking against libxerces-c2_1_0.dll. The
most likely scenario is the topic of a bug that I just entered, where the
symlinks created in $XERCESCROOT/lib/ don't work the way they are expected
to under cygwin. I'm working on a patch for this right now.
4) instead of downloading each .tar.bz2 file from my site and extracting
them manually, you can also try using the "User URL" feature of cygwin
setup.exe and point it to http://abackus.imagineis.com and everything will
be automagically installed in the proper locations if you select
"xerces-c-devel" under the Devel tree in the setup wizard. Note that you
won't be able to link against this pre-built dll unless you have gcc 3.2.

Thanks!

problem with package Base: cygwin 1.3.13-2, 1.3.12-4 works

2002-10-21 Thread David Meleedy

I can't use "startx" anymore with the new cygwin package on my
Windows 2000 machine. The problem goes away when I revert to
the previous version. I totally uninstalled and reinstalled cygwin
(deleting the entire folder) to make sure there was nothing non-standard
about my setup.

What happens is that when I run "startx", which invokes xinit,
I get the gray window with the X cursor that moves around, but nothing
else, and then in the cygwin window, the following messages appear:

: startx

waiting for X server to begin accepting connections .
..
..
( a lot of double dot lines appear )
..
( eventually I click the close box on the Cygwin/XFree86 application)

giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to Xserver
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

To me it looks like there might be something going on with the
socket connection to the Xserver? Just a guess, all I know is
that the old version works.

Thanks for looking into this.

I have recently installed cygwin into a M$ Windows 2000 desktop.
I do not seem to be able to cut and paste from other windows into

You're not using the snapshot. You're using a DLL that you built

Flex: Cygwin and Windows ports

2002-10-21 Thread Vincent Caron
Hello,

I'd like to use the latest Flex (ie. 2.5.23) under a Windows
environment. The main pb is related to the integral types declaration
(in flexint.h).

Cygwin :

* does not have
* but provides which defines most integral types
* the latter is needed for the uint* unsigned types (Cygwin adds an
extra underscore) :

  typedef u_int8_t uint8_t;
  typedef u_int16_t uint16_t;
  typedef u_int32_t uint32_t;

As far as I could check, looks like an ISOC99 non compliance issue (
http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/007904975/basedefs/stdint.h.html ).

Windows : is not even vaguely POSIX, so you get something like :

typedef __int8 int8_t;
typedef __int16 int16_t;
typedef __int32 int32_t;
typedef __int64 int64_t;
typedef unsigned __int8 uint8_t;
typedef unsigned __int16 uint16_t;
typedef unsigned __int32 uint32_t;
typedef unsigned __int64 uint64_t;

I don't know how you would like to solve those issues, thus I'm not
sending my brutal flexint.h patch :)

cvs unable to remove lock directory; rm -r works

2002-10-21 Thread Igor Pechtchanski
Hi,

I've been trying to track this down for a few days, to no avail.
I have a cvs repository on a samba drive. My OS is Win2k SP2; CYGWIN is
set to "check_case:strict ntsec notitle nosmbntsec". My cvs is 1.11.0-1
(I tried both the distribution binary and the one built from the source).
I also tried both cygwin-1.3.13-2 and the cvs HEAD.

When I attempt to check in a file, I receive the following message from
cvs:

$ cvs commit -m ""
Checking in ;
/export/home/igor/testrepository/,v  <--
new revision: 1.9; previous revision: 1.8
done
cvs commit: failed to remove lock dir /export/home/igor/testrepository/#cvs.lock:
Permission denied
$

The relevant mount is

$ mount | grep export
\\samba.watson.ibm.com\igor on /export/home/igor type user (binmode)
$

I'm able to manually remove the directory using 'rm -rf'. Furthermore,
the following program also works:

$ cat > t.c
#include
void main() {
  const char *dir = "/export/home/igor/testrepository/#cvs.lock";
  int res = rmdir(dir);
  printf ("%d = rmdir(\"%s\")\n", res, dir);
}
$ make t
gcc t.c   -o t
$ ./t
0 = rmdir("/export/home/igor/testrepository/#cvs.lock")
$

As far as I could see, cvs also uses the rmdir from cygwin1.dll. Yet it
was unable to remove the directory, for some reason. Tracing it under gdb
showed that GetLastError after RemoveDirectory() returned 5
(ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED) when called from cvs.

Would anyone have any pointers on how I could debug this further? Thanks,
Igor

Re: Initializing and cygwin.bat

2002-10-21 Thread Sven Köhler
As a new user I wanted to customize cygwin.bat to my system, which
uses 4dos as the shell and only maintains command.com as an
antique.  W98 BTW.

I found that various commands wouldn't work! The reason was that
command.com was being called in the .pif file. I simply changed
the .pif to specify "%comspec%" in place of
"c:\windows\command.com".

Is there any reason setup shouldn't do this in the initial
creation? Since the .pif files are of some peculiar structure I
had to use explorer and the fursluginner mouse to make this
change.

i don't use the batch-file anymore.
i changed the shortcut to execute bash.exe --login diretly, which avoids
a stupid question by cmd.exe after bash exists and Ctrl-C was pressed:
  Abort Execution (Y/N)
text may be different in englisch (using german windows)

i don't know, if this work for you, but instead of changing the
batch-file, you could change /etc/profile which is the first script
bash.exe executes (when run with the --login paramter)

starting bash without a batch-file also avoids the idle cmd.exe or
commmand.com process :-)

BTW: why is cygwin installed with that batch-file, and why doesn't the
setup create shortcuts to the command "bash.exe --login" but to cygwin.bat?
Has this been done for some reason?

Cygwin doesn't enforce .exe for executables on any platform, AFAIK. Trying to
run an executable without a .exe on Windows 9x just doesn't work, AFAIK.

Also, Cygwin does handle '#!' shell scripts and it does look at magic numbers
to determine if something is executable, when ntsec is not active.

Assuming you're using Cygwin in a so-called "console" Window, which is
the default (the alternative being RXVT), you probably want to enable
"QuickEdit" mode. Access the window properties dialog (click on the
small Cygwin icon at the left of the window frame) and select
"Properties." In that dialog, activate the "Options" tab and active
the "QuickEdit Mode" check-box on the bottom right.

When (if) you confirm this dialog, you'll be asked whether you want
this change applied to the "... current window only", or to the "...
shortcut that started this window." If you did not start that shell
via a shortcut, then the long-term choice will be "... for future
windows with same title." Assuming you don't want to go through this
ritual each time you open a new Cygwin window, choose the appropriate
long-term option.

Now you'll be able to use the mouse to select text blocks and use the
right button to copy those selections to the Windows clipboard.

Re: Shared Network install accessible by multiple users

2002-10-21 Thread Igor Pechtchanski
Brian,

There is no reason why this shouldn't work (unless you use some special
type of drive, such as a samba share). I would guess you'd want to keep
/tmp and /var on a local disk on each machine, but you should be able to
share /bin, /lib and /usr (even in read-only mode).  /etc might be a bit
of a challenge, but if you can figure out how to share /etc/passwd,
/etc/groups, etc, there should be few problems. Just run setup on each
machine, specifying the network drive as the root. This should create all
the necessary default mount points. Then run 'mount -s' for each of the
directories you want to keep locally. Generate /etc/passwd and /etc/group
(you may need to do this by hand, rather than by mkpasswd --
alternatively, you can run mkpasswd on each machine and collect the
results). This'll probably be easier if all your users are domain users.
Hope this helps,
Igor

cygwin use report: vexec, UML, off-topic X rave

2002-10-21 Thread David Nicol

One cannot symlink DLL's on Windows. You can hardlink or copy it, but it
should not be neccessary, one can use a symlink to link the importlibs
libxerces-c.a -> libxerces-c-2.1.0.a so you can use -lxerces-c at the
linkline when compiling your own application. Anyway the linker should
pick libxerces-c-2.1.0.dll as rt.
BTW, there is some consensus that cygwin DLL's should be prefixed with
'cyg' instead of 'lib' to differentiate them from native Windows libs.

It is really important to point this out! C++ code built with GCC3 is not
binary compatible with code compiled with GCC2.

Cygwin doesn't enforce .exe for executables on any platform, AFAIK. Trying
to
run an executable without a .exe on Windows 9x just doesn't work, AFAIK.

Right. Poor choice of wording. ".exe" was added to executables generated
by
gcc for Cygwin to permit them to run on 9x/Me platforms. Individuals that
don't run on 9x/Me and that want to remove the ".exe"s from their utilities
are free to, assuming they don't mind always running those utilities from
the
Cygwin shells.

Also, it's worthwhile to point out that Cygwin didn't need to do anything
special to get executables without an extension to run as executables in
Cygwin shells. This is an NT/W2K/XP feature. It's just not one that is
generally used by Windows (i.e. it isn't available to cmd.exe, etc).

I like this track of thought. Just what I was thinking... I havent been
fiddling with this much since my last post, but for the record:

unset DISPLAY
export TERM=cygwin

...doesnt help a bit. same symptoms. And "ssh -x" doesnt help like Igor
suggested. (but thanx for the input!) My login scripts on the other
machine dont play with any variables except PATH. What windows systems
do you guys run? I'm doing all of this on an WinXP box.
But I dont see how that could matter, since it works outside
X. Work has gotten in the way of playing around with this more. If anyone
has followed this thread and have similar symptoms, I wouldnt mind sharing
experiences with ssh/X/cygwin.

Thanx everyone who gave some input. If I put more energy into this and
figure out what the problem was, I'll let ya'll know. (but dont hold your
breath, as I am swamped with "real" work.) %-)

wrong list realy (you want the cygwin-xfree list

 but try the startxwin.sh script. (see extract from that file below) (and
maybe try a snapshot cygwin1.dll)

# Startup the X Server, the twm window manager, and an xterm.

# Notice that the window manager and the xterm will wait for
# the server to finish starting before trying to connect; the
# error "Cannot Open Display: 127.0.0.1:0.0" is not due to the

Problems with 'I have no name'

2002-10-21 Thread Matt Perry
Before anyone flames me, I've read the docs, the FAQ, and searched the
mailing list archives for 'I have no name.' I've tried the suggestions on
the mailing list but they aren't working. I've even searched using
Google.

I'm using Windows XP and logged in with a domain login. My domain
username is in the local machine's administrators group.

I installed Cygwin for just me using the default package selection plus
the CVS, OpenSSH and OpenSSL packages. When I run bash, It tells me that
I am the administrator. When I try to check files out of CVS, I get an
error telling me that it can't change the mode of files. From reading the
archives, it looks like I need to use mkpasswd -du to add myself to
/etc/passwd.  So I ran:

  mkpasswd -u 'perrym3' -d 'rnumdmas'

which just printed the output to my screen. So I tried:

  mkpasswd -u 'perrym3' -d 'rnumdmas' >> /etc/passwd

I then exited bash and then started it again. Now I get bash telling me
that 'I have no name.' If I remove the line that was added to /etc/passwd
by the mkpasswd command above, then I'm back to bash thinking that I'm the
administrator.

Some people have suggested adding nontsec to the CYGWIN variable, but I'm
not sure how great of an idea that is. After all, it's on for a reason so
what is the point of it if you are going to have everyone disable it.

I also thought that this was strange. Here is my entry in /etc/passwd:

perrym3:unused_by_nt/2000/xp:81217:10513:Perry, Matt {Info~Pleasanton},U-RNUMDMA
S\perrym3,S-1-5-21-2116170847-193796598-433219294-71217://RPBMF106/perrym3$:/bin
/bash

But when I log in and type 'id' I get the following:

uid=15681 gid=10513 groups=544(Administrators),545(Users)

What I find confusing here is that while the GID matches what is in
/etc/passwd, the UID does not. Based on the suggestion in the ntsec
chapter of the docs I changed the GID for the perrym3 entry in /etc/passwd
to be the GID for the locla administrators group. Now when I log in and
type 'id' I get the following:

uid=15681 gid=544(Administrators) groups=544(Administrators),545(Users)

But bash still complains that I have no name.

Any ideas on how to solve this? Any help will be very appreciated.

"Oh no, please Mr Troll," pleaded the goat. "I'm only the smallest Billy

good. Why don't you wait for my brother, the second Billy Goat Gruff? He's

This is more of a reply to nemrut, or just me talking out loud on a Monday morning...
:-)

It *might* be that nemrut has Cygwin B20 on CD-ROM, and has bad dialup internet
service, where it will cost him money to download the latest from cygwin.com. That's a
valid reason to [want to] stay on an older version..

If this IS the case, nemrut should ask the question, `where could he find CD-ROMs with
a more recent Cygwin?`.

Unfortunately I do not know the answer. I checked cheapbytes.com but they don't offer
Cygwin discs. But perhaps this post will prompt nemrut to offer more information...
