Something is wrong with your system: Cygwin Setup only requires a reboot
if something it's installing is already running when you install, and
even then it hooks Windows' RunOnce startup sequence and waits for you
to reboot manually.

The message you state above telling you of some corruption doesn't come
from 'setup' so you'll need to consult MS about that problem. If there is
indeed some corruption problem, that may be the reason you have trouble
deleting the directory. Based on the paraphrased message you report when
you tried to delete the directory (called 'din'?), it appears that you
were using either Cygwin's or Windows 'rmdir' command to do your bidding.
You're best off using the Windows version to remove the directory since
Cygwin's is going to be part of the tree that you want to delete. You'll
need to specify the '/s' flag to tell it to remove recursively. 'rmdir'
won't delete entire directory trees without that flag (that's why you got
the warning about the directory not being empty). Or you can use the
Windows explorer instead.

Hi Thanks for reply Larry.
Sorry about the BAD! typos in that post :(
:)
Anyways the (.din) was meant to be the c:\cygwin\bin dir
Asoi I had been using the windowsXP explorer to try and delete the dir,
as-well as trying, Del at the msdos cmd prompt. Niether worked ended up with
me getting the error msg about the c:\cygwin\bin dir not being empty and
being corrupted along with all the other sub dir's of c:\cygwin.

When I lpook in the c:\cygwin\bin dir it is very much empty completely, no
hidden files or anything.
So I guess it's all badly corrupted.

I took your advice and tried rmdir \s and it just gave me a load of gobble
about..
c:\cygwin\bin The directory is not empty.
c:\cygwin\etc\mime.types The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable.
And many many more along a similar theme, with just different names; which
meant no deletion of the dir at all.

I even tried renaming it and then trying to install cygwin again in a new
c:\cygwin dir.
But almost at the very end of the install it did the exact same thing as
last time, it FORCE REBOOTED the system and didn't finish the install.
Only this time I could and did delete the c:\cygwin dir ok.

I am now just left with the old corrupted c:\cygwin dir which I named
c:\dead and which I cannot get rid of period.

Handling this in rxvt should solve your problem (I wonder if there are
any reasons not to do that).

Not sure what you mean by 'handling'. Are you saying rxvt needs to be
modified, or just terminfo?

I uploaded the rxvt-cygwin terminfo file from Cygwin onto the Linux
system (into ~/.terminfo/r/rxvt-cygwin). Setting TERM=rxvt-cygwin now
allows the curses-based program to draw boxes correctly, but
apparently some substitution is going on because it's using plain old
hyphens and vertical bars for lines and plus signs for corners.
Terminfo doesn't seem to know anything about Unicode as far as I can
tell (or does it?). That leads to the question of how putting the
terminfo file on the Linux system caused the curses-based program to
output single ASCII characters where previously it was sending Unicode
sequences... something understood how to interpret the Unicode box-
drawing characters and replaced them with the nearest ASCII matches
"+", "|" and '-'.
However, this IS NOT happening with Unicode quote characters. Here's
a snippet from the man page for terminfo itself, as displayed:
Entries in terminfo consist of a sequence of ‘,’ separated fields
(embedded commas may be escaped with a backslash or notated as \054).
White space after the ‘,’ separator is ignored. The first entry for
each terminal gives the names which are known for the terminal, sepa-
rated by ‘|’ characters. The first name given is the most common
Those "‘" sequences turn out to be \xE2\x80\x99, which is the UTF8
encoding of the Unicode character "Right Single Quotation Mark)
(U+2019).
Here's the full terminfo entry (decompiled with infocmp):

C:\cygwin & sub folder will not delete after failed install of cygwi 1.5.10-3

2004-06-05 Thread James Bond
Hello all.
I just got the new cygwin dll of the main site and commenced to install via
the prefered method of internet install.
I chose all the packages I wanted, left the Install for ALL USERS checked,
also the DEFAULT TEXT FILE TYPE UNIX checked.
Then I preceded top install, everything seemed to go fine up until it
finished downlooading and began to install.
Then all of a sudden I got the message...
The File and Direcotry c:\cygwin\etc\setup is corrupt and unreadable. Please
run the Chkdsk utility.
I run Chkdsk and it doesn't find anything wrong.
Now I cant delete the dir C:\cygwin or any of the sub dir's in it because I
get the msg...
Cannot delete din because directory is not empy.
I get similar msg's when i try to delete any of the sub directories under
C:\cygwin
All the contend for the install or cache as it's called in the instructions,
is safely tucked away a dir i can get to and is complete and ready for the
install via what would have to be a local install now.
I am just stuck on what to do with regards to deleting the C:\cygwin DIR and
it's sub directories.
Also I wouldn't mind knowing what caused the courrption or error in the
first place.
Any ideas people?
Thanks.

Try "man ssh_config". There you can supply global defaults and per-host
overrides for most parameters, including user login name.

1.5.10-3: seems to break eCos configtool

2004-06-05 Thread Bill Hegardt

I find that running the eCos configtool after upgrading
to 1.5.10-3 causes it to fail when it starts up and
attempts to read the eCos repository (at least that's
what I assume it is doing on start up).

The configtool reports numerous warnings and repeatedly
displays "this package does not have any valid version
subdirectories" before it exits. The warnings scroll by
too quickly on the GUI to catch all the gory details.

If I downgrade to 1.5.9, it works fine. Upgrading back
to 1.5.10-3 causes the problem to return. I also tried
cygwin1-20040604.dll, but the problem remains. This
problem also occurs on another PC running Windows 2000.

If this turns out to be a cygwin bug rather than a
configuration problem, I'm certainly willing to help
solve this if anyone can point me in the right
direction.

As for duplicating this problem, here's a link to the
page I used to download eCos and the configtool.

http://ecos.sourceware.org/getstart.html

I ran the wget command to fetch the software and then
ran the ecos-install.tcl script.

I then ran /opt/ecos/ecosenv.sh to setup the
environment. Finally, I ran
/opt/ecos/ecos-2.0/tools/bin/configtool to make the
problem occur.

I've attached my cygcheck output taken after installing
the snapshot.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Example of problem:

(gdb) r < /home/work/tape01-1.su

Program exited with code 01.
(gdb)
---
suresamp (and other programs that use stdin) works fine when not in debug (gdb) mode
(because gdb isn't using tty).
This may be a cygwin only issue, as it works on a linux sun box.

I tried this with 'cat', not specifying a file, and found I could type in
and see my input echoed back fine (just like outside 'gdb'). Does that
reproduce for you? Does trying that with 'suresamp.exe' give you different
results?

I tried this with 'cat', not specifying a file, and found I could type in
and see my input echoed back fine (just like outside 'gdb'). Does that
reproduce for you? Does trying that with 'suresamp.exe' give you different
results?

This wasn't enlightening?

SSH(1)BSD General Commands Manual SSH(1)

NAME
ssh - OpenSSH SSH client (remote login program)

SYNOPSIS
 ssh [-1246AaCfgkNnqsTtVvXxY] [-b bind_address] [-c cipher_spec] [-D port]
 [-e escape_char] [-F configfile] [-i identity_file]
 [-L port:host:hostport] [-l login_name] [-m mac_spec] [-o option]
 ^^^
 [-p port] [-R port:host:hostport] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [command]
.
.
.

Perhaps this isn't what you're looking for. Given that your question is
unclear (why would you want to change your login name to the name of the
*host* you're logging into?), I might be misinterpreting your inquiry.
But if you're looking to change the login name for ssh to anything, -l is
the flag that does it. Did you just miss that or are you really looking
for something else? So far, I don't see that your problem is Cygwin
specific.

It's mentioned twice within the first ten lines of the man page
(Synopsis).

Problem on Cygwin with gdb: segy input can't be tty

2004-06-05 Thread Don McCarley
In trying to debug code with gdb, any program taking stdin on the
command line complains that tty (keyboard) is already taken by gdb, so
it can't use tty. Is there a way that you can get the input data into
the program other than stdin; or force it in with stdin?

Example of problem:
---
$ gdb suresamp
GNU gdb 2003-09-20-cvs (cygwin-special)
Copyright ...
.
.
(gdb) r < /home/work/tape01-1.su
Starting program: /usr/local/cwp/bin/suresamp.exe < /home/work/tape01-1.su
/usr/local/cwp/bin/suresamp: fgettr.c: segy input can't be tty
Program exited with code 01.
(gdb)
---
suresamp (and other programs that use stdin) works fine when not in
debug (gdb) mode (because gdb isn't using tty).

This may be a cygwin only issue, as it works on a linux sun box.
Any help or ideas are appreciated,
Don McCarley

Changing the default user for an ssh login

2004-06-05 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello from Gregg C Levine
I have a question. How can I change the default user of the Cygwin
version of SSH from my login name to that of the host that I am going
to be logging into?

In this case it is a Linux box, and the user is root. Examining the
man page for this version of SSH did not prove to be enlightening.

Why not trash all those crippled mail programs, you must not use them?

The system calls go through cygwin1.dll and not directly to the system
(for every for executable linked against cygwin1.dll).

You may speed up your compiler if you build it optimized for your
platform. The distributed gcc is compiled for arch=i486, optimized
for your processor would result in a speedup about 20-30%.

[ANNOUNCEMENT] Updated: ssmtp-2.60.9-1

2004-06-05 Thread Robert R Schneck-McConnell
I have updated the version of ssmtp to 2.60.9-1.

Upstream, there's a new maintainer; along with some minor changes, two
format string vulnerabilities were removed. See
http://packages.debian.org/testing/mail/ssmtp

Meanwhile, I've changed the config file generator (/usr/bin/ssmtp-config).
A possibly important change: it encourages a default of
FromLineOverride=YES, which means that ssmtp will retain an existing From:
line rather than creating its own. This seems sensible to me. If you
don't use ssmtp-config again, nothing will change for you.

Also, thanks to Jari Aalto it will offer any settings from the current
config file as defaults; and I made it more verbose, on the theory that
when a program has only five options you might as well understand them.

To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. Then, run setup and answer all of the questions.
The ssmtp package is in the Mail category.

ssmtp is an extremely simple sendmail replacement, which forwards messages
to a mailhub (e.g., your ISP's outgoing mail server), and does nothing
else.

Please read /usr/share/doc/Cygwin/ssmtp-2.60.9.README for configuration
information.

Robert

This happens due to the following difference in the terminfo entries:

-   acsc=``aaffggjjkkllmmnnooppqqrrssttuuvvwwxxyyzz{{||}}~~,
+
acsc=+\257\,\256-\^0\333`\004a\261f\370g\361h\260j\331k\277l\332m\300n\305o~p\304q\304r\304s_t\303u\264v\301w\302x\263y\363z\362{\343|\330}\234~\376,

Handling this in rxvt should solve your problem (I wonder if there are
any reasons not to do that).

With kind regards,
Baurjan.
