Setup does not offer uninstall of emacs ( which I did not knowingly install in the first place )

2005-05-15 Thread Reid Thompson
Somehow, my installation has decided that emacs is a required download
and is not to be uninstalled.

Could someone shed some light on this? Is it uninstallable due to some
other package that I've downloaded, or for some other reason?

Can setup be configured so that I can uninstall emacs

Bad links, esp. /bin/csh -> tcsh

2005-05-15 Thread fergus
Following (I think?) the recent update of tcsh the link
/bin/csh -> tcsh
points to a file that no longer exists. (Typing csh gives "bash: csh:
command not found".)

Incidentally by the rather sledgehammer approach of

find / -print0 | xargs -0 md5sum > file0 2> file1

it's possible to identify 111 bad links altogether. Approx 40 of these
(mainly in /bin/) are of the form {pathto}/name1 -> {pathto}/name2 where
actually the target file is {pathto}/name2.exe, so I guess are not strictly
wrong, in that they'll work even though the target file does not exist.

Another 55 are in /usr/share/doc/doxygen-1.4.2_20050421/examples/ and are
plain wrong (nonexistent targets).

Also 4 in /usr/share/man/de/man1/ are wrong because gslp.1 does not exist.
There are minor others including /usr/share/man/mf.1 and
/usr/share/man1/mf-nowin.1, both having non-existent targets.

Because of the virtual creation of /usr/bin/ other links that don't work
from /bin/, do work from /usr/bin/, and so are not I suppose strictly wrong.
(Conversely the link /usr/bin/pidof -> ../sbin/killall5.exe doesn't work
from /usr/bin/ but does work from /bin/.) Similarly the virtual creation of
/usr/lib/ makes some things work that otherwise would fail.

At one point we should have made /usr/sbin a symlink to /sbin or vice
versa. I'd rather see the sbin files in one place, too.

How to separate backspace and control-J functions?

2005-05-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
On my Debian Linux bash shell, the backspace key kills
the current character ("backward-delete-char" function

left ("backward-char" function in .inputrc)

However, in cygwin's bash shell, whenever I use
.inputrc to assign a function to control-J, then the
backspace key gets the same function. (the .inputrc
line is "\C-H": backward-char )

In cygwin, how can I assign ^J to "backward-char" but
leave the default behavior for the backspace key
("backward-delete-char")?

For some reason you're running the wrong version of `file'.
Cygwin's `file' tool expects the magic file in /usr/share/file.

No, it doesn't. I just installed Cygwin on another system and it
turned out that tcsh.exe is accidentally installed into the *real*
/usr/bin path instead to /bin. The reason was that the latest tcsh
package (6.14.00-2) had a "./" prepended to the paths accidentally.
Unfortunately, setup doesn't deal with this.

I've uploaded a new version of tcsh (6.14.00-3) which uses correct
paths again.

Sorry 'bout that,

Today's neo-nazi spam

2005-05-15 Thread Corinna Vinschen
Just FYI,

these latest postings (which are 99% already filtered by the spam detection
software on sourceware.org!) are the result of the most recent version of
the Sober worm, Sober.P. Sober.P's only job was apparently to download the
next generation, Sober.Q into the infected PCs. Sober.Q contains all this
neo-nazi mud which it sent today out into the world. All "From:" addresses
in these postings are forged by the worm. A German computer magazine, c't,
assumes that the date is well planned to affect results of regional elections.
For more information see http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/59562
(in german).

There's no reason to discuss anything related to this stuff, at least
not in this group. Just get over it.

Thanks,
Corinna

Actually, if your server has the ability to send the first post of each new
signup to a moderator, the job of eliminating massive spam like we just saw
becomes pretty trivial, involving one action per signup. If there's no one
actually at Redhat who can handle that, then I suppose I'd be willing--I do
that for a couple other lists.

I was kidding. This is the sourceware.org server. It has been contributed
by Red Hat but it's maintained entirely by volunteers. So, no, there's
nobody at Red Hat doing that and it doesn't fall into the responsibility of
anyone at Red Hat. And, no, there's nobody actually interested in moderating
lists on sourceware.org. Many lists are subscriber-only, the Cygwin list is
not. It might become subscriber-only at one point, but I actually doubt it.
Usually the spam filtering is very good.

I explained what happens today in a posting from just an hour ago. What
hits this list is just the tip of the iceberg. Most of the postings
already have been filtered out by the spam detection software. So please
let's put this to rest.

Thanks,
Corinna

Base-files 3.4-1: Problems for users with Non-Admin. priv.

2005-05-15 Thread Angelo Graziosi

When loging as user without admn. priv.
(e.g.: owner= Graziosi, group= Users)
the standard bash shell (cygwin.bat) says:

chmod: changing permissions of `/tmp': Permission denied

This is caused by

if [ -d "/tmp" ]; then
chmod 1777 /tmp
fi

in /etc/profile.

It assign the permission "t" to /tmp but this was already a problem
with xorg-x11-xwin-6.8.2.0-1 and org-x11-xwin-gl-6.8.2.0-1.
The next, 6.8.2.0-2, was released exactly to fix that problem.
The solution was to not assign the "t" permission to /tmp and
to whatever it contans!

Path problems with trailing dot

2005-05-15 Thread Stefan Schuerger
Today I noticed with streamripper that Cygwin appears to have a problem
with trailing dots in paths:

> mkdir test. ; echo > test./test2
bash: test./test2: No such file or directory

The trailing dot disappears and cannot be used in paths. This seems to
be a DOS legacy of either NTFS or Windows.

Is there anything in the queue to fix this?

Stefan Schuerger

Since some (most?) Unix shells have a "convenience feature" to reinterpret
multiple forward slashes as a single slash, could this behavior break
existing scripts or makefiles?

Also, there is a strange discrepancy in how the current (non-snapshot)
version of Cygwin 1.5.16-1 handles multiple forward slashes. I compared it's
handling of some 'ls' commands to that of bash on Linux RHAS 2.1.

When listing '/', all the following commands work the same on both systems:
1. ls /
2. ls //
3. ls ///
4. ls

However, when listing a directory under '/', command #2 behaves differently
in Cygwin:
1. ls /etc
2. ls //etc (* - fails only on Cygwin, see below)
3. ls ///etc
4. ls etc

(*) On Cygwin, command #2 returns:
-
$ ls //etc
ls: //etc: No such file or directory
-

This is per the Single Unix Specification; three or more slashes are
required to be equivalent to one slash, while two slashes are
explicitly reserved for operating system dependent behaviour (in
cygwin's case, //server).

If you just want to use distcc, why not just install the Cygwin package?

Thanks for the clarification Yitzchak - that does make sense.

So, a good reason to test is Cygwin's handling of 'ls //' has changed - from
listing the root directory, to listing servers in the workgroup/domain.

In the queue? Kind of. Check out managed mounts:

at first, i tried that, and while the compile does get distributed, it is also
guarenteed to fail. something like this results:

not knowing much about using linux on linux, much less via cygwin, when i came
across the gentoo wiki for installing a distcc server in cygwin, i thought all
this compiling was necessary to build things right.

in otherwords, you're saying my problem is that its not working out of the box,
as i detailed above?

my gentoo box has gcc 3.3.5, and my cygwin box has 3.3.1. i read that the
slightly different version wouldnt be a problem.

Your question is not "how to get distcc" working, then. You need to
build a cross compiler if you want to build linux binaries on Cygwin.
The problem that you originally reported was missing headers, because
you do not have the linux headers and libraries installed on Cygwin for
the cross compiler to use.

This is a general question about building cross compilers, it's not
specific to Cygwin at all. I recommend you post on the crossgcc list.

brian,

my original question was how to get gcc to compile (w/o using distcc) as a
means for building my cross compiler. at least thats what i thought i was
doing. i was following this howto:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Distcc_server_on_Windows . like i said, im a bit
out of my league here.

do you still think i need to be over in the other mailing list? i ask b/c i am
a little confused as to whether i should be following that guide at all right
now.

As I said, in your original post your cross compiler build was failing
because you don't seem to have the target (i.e. linux) headers installed
in the right place. There is a circular dependency for building the
crt*.o files, because in order to do so you need the target headers and
libs installed, but in order to make and install glibc you need a
working cross gcc, and possibly kernel headers. You can either cheat
and just copy over the target specific files from the linux system, or
do something like use the 'sanitized' headers that the crosstool script
uses. This will all be explained to you in the crossgcc mailing list
which is where you should ask your question, because this really is not
a Cygwin-related topic.

About whether the instructions on the wiki are any good, I have no
idea. It's not something that this list supports.

cygrunsrv V1.01, Feb 27 2005

2005-05-15 Thread Louis Solomon [SteelBytes]
Hi,
I've got a problem, in that I am using cygrunsrv to run squid (compiled
with cywin), and occasionally the squid.exe process dies, but cygrunsrv but
keeps running. I need cygrunsrv to either terminate, so that the service
configuration that I have set (for it to autorestart on fail) kicks in, or
for cygrunsrv to restart the child (squid.exe).
Also, could you add an option to the install settings, to configure
recovery? (ie, the settings that I can change in the services control panel
under Recover)

OK, I'm not that talented, so I didn't try fixing this bug, but I did report
it with a better testcase here:
http://rt.cpan.org/NoAuth/Bug.html?id=12840

I had a look at your post, but out of curiosity, isn't it about adding
functionality for looking up the WINPID from the Cygwin process ID? Is the
fix really that simple? After all, Proc::ProcessTable misreports the PID and
PPID only under certain conditions -- this would indicate a complex issue in
Proc::ProcessTable XS code, right?

Recent increase in size

2005-05-15 Thread fergus
Has anybody else noticed a recent increase in the size of Cygwin (Full
install)? Just a couple of weeks ago the entire system fitted on a 2.0GB
stick with about 0.4GB spare. That made Cygwin about 1.6GB. Now I seem to
have Cygwin ~ 2.1GB: about 30% up!! I've checked that I haven't got a load
of stuff in /usr/src/ but these figures are hardly credible. There are no
single gigantic files that I can identify, but maybe there's some huge
directory come into being?

I mean (sorry to bang on) has /bin/ always contained ~1700 files at 269M;
and /lib/ ~500 files at 164M? (I've only noticed because I'm looking.)

(And what is the consequence for memory usage when the virtual directories
/usr/bin/ and /usr/lib/ are created on startup?)

This, I don't know. I only have ~500 files in /bin, and that of course will
vary depending on what packages are installed.

This I do: Those are just mount table entries. Memory usage won't change
regardless of the number or size of files in the directory a Cygwin mount
table entry points to. So there's no consequence there.
