cadaver does nothing

2006-07-16 Thread Raye Raskin

Hi. I just downloaded cadaver to my cygwin setup. The man page
is there, but cadaver itself does nothing. I won't give me help
if I use -h or --help. It won't tell me its version number if I
use -V or --version. And it won't connect to a site that I know
is operational and reachable.

The version I installed is 0.22.2-1, the latest as of this email.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I for one am very glad it has been mentioned on the Cygwin list, as I
had noticed similar behaviour but not bothered to establish the cause.
And I would never have thought it was an X-related problem as convert is
a non-graphical program.

I think it affects GraphicsMagick also.

Huh? I had to go back and re-read this thread to make sure my memory of it
wasn't faulty. Low and behold, it wasn't. Here's the synopsis:

 1. You send email to the list saying "I would like to run programs as root,
which means the userid and group need to be set to 0, and the name needs
to = root."

 2. Igor replies and says, essentially, that you really can't do things this
way but if you need to for some reason, here are some possible
workarounds.

 3. There's a brief back and forth where you're looking for more info and
Igor quite reasonably responds that what you're looking for in generic
terms doesn't make sense and asks if you can start giving some specifics
about the program or programs that you're working with that you believe
need to be run as root. He also points you to Google to learn more about
how Windows privileges work.

 4. "When I download a program off the internet I expect it to run out of
 the box."

That's a nice philosophy and in general, I agree with it. But what *exactly*
does this philosophy have to do with Cygwin? You're proceeding from a faulty
supposition. There is no such thing as "root" on Windows. Never has been.
Never will be. If you need an exact concept of "root" under Windows, Cygiwn
isn't going to be able to provide this. That's about as far as anyone on this
list is going to be able to take this subject without you being more specific
about what you're doing. If you have a problem with a program that comes as
part of the Cygwin distribution (i.e. is part of one of the packages listed in
), then please tell us *exactly* what that
problem is. We prefer such reports to adhere to the problem reporting
guidelines found at . So far this thread has
been very generic and pretty abstract. As a result, it's going no-where
pretty fast. If your issue is not Cygwin specific, then Googling for
information or finding a more appropriate forum is likely to be a better route
to the information you're looking for. I believe that was the main point Igor
was trying to make with the piece of his last response that you quoted above.
So, if you could, please try to organize your thoughts on this subject and
come back to the list with some specific Cygwin problem if it turns out to be
one. Tell us precisely what you trying to do and where you see problems.
I'm sure you'll get at least some good pointers to the information you need.

Failure to run image magic in the latest release

2006-07-16 Thread Andy Rushton

Hi all,

I have found a problem with ImageMagick and a temporary fix.

After a recent update to my Cygwin installation, the convert program
stopped working. It simply exited silently, though I discover with gdb
that it was failing with an unknown exception. It turned out that this
was because of a missing dll, specifically
/usr/X11R6/bin/cygdpstk-1.dll, which also requires
/usr/X11R6/bin/cygdps-1.dll.

A bit more digging and I found that these DLLs used to be part of
package xorg-x11-bin-dlls but has been removed with the latest release -
6.8.99.901-1.

I've fixed the problem for myself by grabbing these DLLs from the
previous version of this package (xorg-x11-bin-dlls-6.8.2.0) and
hand-installing them.

So, as I said, I don't know whether this could be fixed by you or the
x11 maintainers. Any thoughts?

Andy Rushton

And more and more off-topic. The fact that we have a program called
"regtool" doesn't mean that we cheerfully entertain questions about the
depths of the registry here. There are better mailing lists or other

You really should be looking elsewhere for this type of information.

I think you missed my point. We're automating administration of large
numbers (hundreds) of workstations. Windows can't handle most of this
stuff. But with Cygwin we're finding ways. It's cheap, fast, powerful,
flexible, extensible.

The mentality that keeps coming back to the limited set of Windows tools
for administration is a very constricting and costly one.

Thanks for the uninstall lead. That's the key. Looking good. Regtool
can accomplish the same things as expensive 3rd-party Windows tools,
with a lot less grief. (And without the straightjacket.)

Not expecting this to become a mainstream part of this list, just asking
for leads and experiences of others. Cygwin is the key. (My query was
not for an uninstall. If we're going to blame a development environment
for all the problems it *might* cause in the future we're in big trouble.)

This keeps getting better and better.

[ANNOUNCEMENT] Updated: m4-1.4.5-1

2006-07-16 Thread Eric Blake
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

A new release of m4, 1.4.5-1, is available, replacing 1.4.4-1 as current.

NEWS

This is a new upstream release. From the NEWS file, the changes since
1.4.4 are listed below. See also /usr/share/doc/m4-1.4.5/.

You must rebuild from source if you want the experimental changeword
feature enabled, as enabling it can slow down normal operation.

DESCRIPTION
===
m4 is an implementation of the traditional Unix macro processor. It is
mostly SVR4 compatible although it has some extensions (for example,
handling more than 9 positional parameters to macros). GNU m4 also has
built-in functions for including files, running shell commands, doing
arithmetic, etc.

UPDATE

Version 1.4.5 - 15 July 2006, by Eric Blake  (CVS version 1.4.4c)

* Fix sysval on BeOS, OS/2, and other systems that store exit status
  in the low-order byte. Additionally, on Unix platforms, if syscmd was
  terminated by a signal, sysval now displays the signal number shifted
  left by eight bits, to match traditional m4 implementations.
* The maketemp macro is no longer subject to platform limitations (such as
  26 or 32 max files from a given template).
* Frozen files now require that the first directive be V (version), to
  better diagnose version mismatch. Additionally, if the F directive
  (builtin function) names an unknown builtin that existed in the m4 that
  froze the file but not in the current m4 (for example, changeword), the
  warning is deferred until an attempt is made to actually use the
  builtin. This allows downgrading from beta m4-1.4o to stable m4-1.4.5
  without breaking autoconf.
* The format and indir macros are now recognized only with arguments.
* The eval macro no longer crashes on x86 architectures when dividing the
  minimum integer by -1.
* On systems with ecvt and fcvt, format no longer truncates trailing
  zeroes on integers printed with %.0f. On systems without these
  functions, format is no longer subject to a buffer overflow that
  permitted arbitrary code execution.
* On native Windows builds, the macro __windows__ is provided instead of
  __unix__. Likewise, on OS/2 builds, the macro __os2__ is provided. This
  allows input files to determine when syscmd might behave differently.
* Fix bug in 1.4.3 patch to use \n line-endings that did not work for
  cygwin.
* When given the empty string or 0, undivert is now documented as a no-op
  rather than closing stdout, warning about a non-existent file, or trying
  to read a directory as a file.
* Many documentation improvements. Also, the manual is now distributed
  under FDL 1.2, rather than a stricter verbatim-only license.
* Raise the -L (--nesting-limit) command line option limit from 250 to
  1024.
* The decr, incr, divert, m4exit, and substr macros treat an empty number
  as 0, issue a warning, and expand as normal; rather than issuing an error
  and expanding to the empty string.
* The eval macro now treats an empty radix argument as 10, handles radix 1,
  and treats the width argument as number of digits excluding the sign,
  for compatibility with other m4 implementations.
* The ifdef, divert, m4exit, substr, and translit macros now correctly
  ignore extra arguments.
* The popdef and undefine macros now correctly accept multiple arguments.
* Although changeword is on its last leg, if enabled, it now reverts to the
  default (faster) regexp when passed the empty string.
* The regexp and substr macros now warn and ignore a trailing backslash in
  the replacement, and warn on \n for n larger than the number of
  sub-expressions in the regexp.

Version 1.4.4b - 17 June 2006, by Eric Blake  (CVS version 1.4.4a)

* Fix a recursive push_string crashing bug, which affected changequote of

S-1-5-32-544, which I know nothing about. Or could any user in the
administrator group do the same.

If I wanted to create my own -u user, rather then the sshd_server
user, what special settings would be required or is that I have a
password set for this user which inetd uses?

I think it's the following section:

   editrights -a SeAssignPrimaryTokenPrivilege -u sshd_server &&
   editrights -a SeCreateTokenPrivilege -u sshd_server &&
   editrights -a SeDenyInteractiveLogonRight -u sshd_server &&
   editrights -a SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u sshd_server &&
   editrights -a SeDenyRemoteInteractiveLogonRight -u
sshd_server &&

   editrights -a SeIncreaseQuotaPrivilege -u sshd_server &&
   editrights -a SeServiceLogonRight -u sshd_server &&
   sshd_server_got_all_rights="yes"

which bestows the necessary rights to the sshd_server user.

Actually it's just the calls to "editrights" that are necessary.
'SeCreateTokenPrivilege' is the right taken away from SYSTEM in W2K3, thus
necessitating the need for this new sshd_server to be created. The only
caution I would offer in all of this is that the OP not create multiple users
with this set of permissions, since it opens potential security holes.

Not particularly cygwin specific, and comprehensively covered at
Microsofts site. Anyway, here's some basic info.

Each program needing an uninstall item has a key in:
/HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall

See
http://windowssdk.msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms709926.aspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/247501

Is this something that might be supported by existing cygwin tools?

Personally, I'd leave installing/uninstalling of non-cygwin apps to
windows. Can you imagine the queries coming to this list?

 - I couldn't uninstall notepad!
 - Executing random uninstaller broke my system! Why did cygwin allow that?
