 Sounds like there is a packaging problem.

 Tried going back to svn 1.4.5-1 instead of latest 1.4.5-2 with same

 I was wrong, there is a libexpat0 (I was looking for libxpat0).
 Re-installing

  Ok, I've now fixed this. (I probably should have gone ahead and done so
when I first noticed it but I didn't want to risk treading on anyone's toes

rebuilt correctly.

coreutils-6.11-1 in release-2 area

2008-05-12 Thread Eric Blake

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I've finally finished a build of coreutils 6.11, and uploaded it to the
release-2 area. It makes heavy use of the openat() family of functions.
It also exercises the improved statvfs interface; I was able to remove the
cygwin-specific hack for df -T. It fixes the bug with rm -rf 'dir '
that I recently reported on the -devel list, but I am still waiting on a
cygwin1.dll fix for mkdir 'dir /' to correctly munge the trailing space.

Note that .exe magic is slightly different, in part due to different
underlying semantics. For example, now that 'foo.' and 'foo' are separate
files, it is much tougher to decide whether 'foo' and 'foo.exe' are the
same file, or whether a directory has both files at once. Likewise, now
that open() sees through symlinks that lack .exe suffix (for example, if
/bin/ksh linked to /bin/pdksh instead of /bin/pdksh.exe), there are a lot
fewer cygwin-specific patches. Additionally, I had to alter my magic to
work with the new cygwin_path_conv methods, rather than the old PATH_MAX
interfaces. So there will probably be issues and/or regressions; please
report them on this list, and I will try to fix them before cygwin 1.7.0
goes live.

 In a previous installation of Cygwin, I had 'history auto complete' in
 so far as I could type a letter, press the up key and the prompt would
 cycle through the most recent entries in history whose first letter
 matches the letter I typed. On my newest install, this feature isn't
 present. Can anyone please let me know how to put it in place?

Depends on your shell. In Zsh it would be...

bindkey '\e[A'  history-beginning-search-backward
bindkey '\e[B'  history-beginning-search-forward

and in Bash...

\e[A:  history-search-backward
\e[B:  history-search-forward

Put these in your .zshrc or .inputrc.

Re: Feature request: rm to recycle bin

2008-05-12 Thread Andrew Schulman
  Given that the code for sending to recycyle bin is already in place, may I
  request that a command line option be added to rm and rmdir to send all
  files to the bin? This would be extremely handy for use in scripts, to me
  at the very least.

 The code to move files into the bin is an underlying, hidden feature of
 the unlink(2), rmdir(2) and rename(2) POSIX calls. The rm(1) tool has
 no access to this functionality and there's no intention to add a
 non-POSIX API to allow any tool to use it.

There is a library called libtrash that implements a trash can for GNU/Linux by
intercepting the above calls:
http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~marriaga/software/libtrash/ . No one has packaged
it for Cygwin. It requires the use of LD_PRELOAD, which I believe is supposed
to work in Cygwin, although I've never tried to use it. Hm... might be
interesting to try... I'll look at it. A.

Yes.

Well, it's right there in /usr/bin/script on my machine. don't know
what package it came from, but it works.

Thanks for that. I had searched for 'script' (instead of 'script.exe'),

But, now that I know what Cygwin package it's in, how do I turn that

I really enjoy Cygwin and would love to have a portable copy on a
thumb drive. I use Cygwin all the time, and obviously I can't install
it on every computer I go on, especially since many are not mine.

I saw many instructions on the web for doing it, but I wanted to see
if their were instructions that were recommended, I know that likely
there will not be an official but I figured at least if it works.

Is it fairly easy to install it on a thumb drive? I'm not worried if
it's hard or command line, because I've install Gentoo Linux before
and have much experience with command line, I just don't want it to
screw up current Cygwins on my machines. Most PCs I use it on, will
not have Cygwin, but perhaps I need to do something on a PC that
already has Cygwin, I don't want it to screw up the local Cygwin.

Thanks Again

  You have to use -mno-cygwin for the whole compilation, not just for the

  -mno-cygwin to LDFLAGS -- instead, redefine CXX='g++ -mno-cygwin' (and
  CC='gcc -mno-cygwin') and rebuild everything from scratch.

 I suppose that, if I don´t want to use cygwin.dll, I should add some
 libraries to the compiling and linking process, but I don´t know wich.
 Could you help me??

 Thank you very much,
 Jesús Oliva

You may need headers that define the above types, or you may be unable to
compile the code with -mno-cygwin if those headers are not present in
MinGW.

Remember, -mno-cygwin means no Cygwin -- you're using MinGW, and will
only be able to compile programs that MinGW has enough support for.

Further questions about this should really be directed to a MinGW list...

Unable to run sshd under a domain sshd_server account

2008-05-12 Thread Schutter, Thomas A.
I am having problems setting up sshd to run under a domain sshd_server
account instead of a local sshd_server account.

Why do I want to do that? Because in the default install, starting a
cygwin shell from the console gives me a much different environment and
permissions than if I start a cygwin shell via ssh. For example, from a
console shell on the Windows 2003 Server:
  $ echo $USER
  tschutter
  $ echo $USERNAME
  tschutter
  $ echo $HOSTNAME
  fdsvbld01sgrape
  $ echo $USERDOMAIN
  FLOODDATA
  $ id
  uid=18718(tschutter) gid=10513(Domain Users)
groups=544(Administrators),545(Users),10513(Domain
Users),18169(FDSV-GG-PrxBLD),22611(FDSV-GG-PrxPCAdmins)
  $ ls //other/f$
  Data  RECYCLERSystem\ Volume\ Information

But when I login via ssh:
  $ echo $USER
  tschutter
  $ echo $USERNAME
  sshd_server
  $ echo $HOSTNAME
  fdsvbld01sgrape
  $ echo $USERDOMAIN
  FDSVBLD01SGRAPE
  $ id
  uid=18718(tschutter) gid=10513(Domain Users)
groups=545(Users),10513(Domain Users)
  $ ls //other/f$
  ls: cannot access //other/f$: Permission denied

The sshd server was setup using ssh-host-config --yes. So it appears
that when I login via ssh, I am logged in as a local user, not a domain
user. Also, when logged in via ssh, I am not in the Administrators,
FDSV-GG-PrxBLD, and FDSV-GG-PrxPCAdmins groups. As a side note, I would
think that USERNAME being set to sshd_server is a bug.

It appears that the solution is to create a domain sshd_server account
and run sshd as that user. So I created a domain account called
fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr. I gave this account the required rights:
  $ editrights -a SeCreateTokenPrivilege -u fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr
  $ editrights -a SeTcbPrivilege -u fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr
  $ editrights -a SeDenyInteractiveLogonRight -u fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr
  $ editrights -a SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr
  $ editrights -a SeDenyRemoteInteractiveLogonRight -u
fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr
  $ editrights -a SeIncreaseQuotaPrivilege -u fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr
  $ editrights -a SeServiceLogonRight -u fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr

I added fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr to local Administrators group.

I changed the ownership of the /etc/ssh files and /var/empty:
  $ chown fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr /etc/ssh* /var/empty

I changed the log on account for the CYGWIN sshd service to the
fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr account.

I then tried to start the service:
  $ net start sshd
  The CYGWIN sshd service is starting.
  The CYGWIN sshd service could not be started.

  The service did not report an error.

  More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534.

The application event log has this error message:
  The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( sshd ) cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be
able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help
and Support for details. The following information is part of the event:
sshd: PID 2068: service `sshd' failed: signal 11 raised.

I have attached the output from cygcheck -s -v -r as
grape-cygcheck.out.

So where do I go from here? What am I missing?

widely-spaced characters in rxvt

Obviously you're using pubkey authentication. If that's not an absolute
requirement for you, then use password authentication. That will resolve
your problem. Otherwise, if you must use pubkey authentication, I'll
direct you to the FAQ:

http://cygwin.com/faq/faq-nochunks.html#faq.using.shares

These are the recommended workarounds for this issue for the 1.5.x
Cygwin package series.

The 1.7.x Cygwin package series will offer an alternative approach
which resolves the issue but is not released so it's only available in
snapshots. Search for 'cyglsa' if you're curious about this new facility.

You have to check what's the default font [1] or if you changed it [2].

There was a thread on the list, long ago, about the default being a font
that comes with the X11 fonts. I'm not sure what's the case right now,
but a widely-spaced font sounds like a font that you have installed but
lacks the necessary hints (that's a X11 font term).

My WAG is that you're missing a DLL. Try running cygcheck `which svn`
and look for messages about missing DLLs. If you find any, please report

Yes, strace and cygcheck both indicate that cygexpat-0.dll is missing
and should be in /bin. Don't see it there. Just see an expat package
in the installer, no libexpat0 as pointed out here:

http://www.nabble.com/-PACKAGING-ERROR--subversion-1.4.5-2-td16959043.html

Sounds like there is a packaging problem.

Tried going back to svn 1.4.5-1 instead of latest 1.4.5-2 with same result.

 I then tried to start the service:

   The service did not report an error.

   More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534.

I solved the problem. I had missed the /var/log files when changing
ownership to the new domain sshd_server account. The chown command
above should be:
  chown fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr /etc/ssh* /var/empty /var/log/lastlog
/var/log/sshd.log

Now the sshd server starts, and when I login my id is correct, and I can
view shares:
  $ echo $USERDOMAIN
  FLOODDATA
  $ id
  uid=18718(tschutter) gid=10513(Domain Users)
groups=544(Administrators),545(Users),10513(Domain
Users),18169(FDSV-GG-PrxBLD),22611(FDSV-GG-PrxPCAdmins)
  $ ls //other/f$
  Data  RECYCLERSystem\ Volume\ Information

Note that my USERNAME is still wrong:
  $ echo $USERNAME
  fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr

Although this method of creating and using a domain sshd_server account
is not one of the recommended workarounds, it appears to work.

In the other thread, Larry Hall pointed me to the FAQ
http://cygwin.com/faq/faq-nochunks.html#faq.using.shares. One of the
suggestions was to provide your password to a net use command. I was
unable to make that work, because net use never asks for my password:
  $ net use \\other\f$
  System error 67 has occurred.

  The network name cannot be found.

As Larry Hall pointed out in the other thread, the cyglsa dll should
solve this problem and I look forward to trying it out when 1.7.x is
available. I am not ready to jump to snapshots at this time.

The font it's using.

I heard that there's some interaction between X11-mode rxvt setup and
plain-window
rxvt setup. I don't think I've installed any X11 libraries, servers,
or even

fonts since rxvt was working right, but now rxvt is acting up again.

You have to check what's the default font [1] or if you changed it [2].

Damn!  It just changed again.

The main question question is why it keeps changing when I running the CygWin
installer even though I don't (as far as I know) touch its font settings or
touch the installer settings for which fonts are installed.

How do I get it to behave consistently (well, consistently with a good font,
rather than consistentl with a bad font).

But why exactly would it display characters with lots of space between them?
Surely the font isn't designed that way.

What is actually going wrong?

You have to check what's the default font [1] or if you changed it [2].

c:/tools/cygwin/etc/defaults/etc/X11/app-defaults/ says:

  Rxvt*font:-bitstream-bitstream vera sans
mono-medium-r-normal--*-160-*-*-m-*-iso8859-1

I have not ~/.Xdefaults

There was a thread on the list, long ago, about the default being a font
that comes with the X11 fonts. I'm not sure what's the case right now,
but a widely-spaced font sounds like a font that you have installed but
lacks the necessary hints (that's a X11 font term).

It sounds like a bigger problem than hints. They're for kerning, making
small improvements to renderings, etc., right. From the symptom I'm getting,
it seems that rxvt doesn't even know how wide the individual glyphs are.

Well, I didn't specify anything. I haven't touched any of
/etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt, ~/.Xdefaults or ~/.Xresources, or given any
options on the command line Iused to invoke rxvt.

I am using whatever the CygWin packages and installer installed on my
machine, which evidently changes in non-intuitive ways when I re-run it
to modify the combinations of packages I have installed even though I'm
not (consciously) touching any X11 or font-related packages).

Just now, I tried installing the ruby package, and as soon as I started rxvt,
it started in messed-up form--widely spaced characters, in yellow, on a dark

spaced characters, in black, on a white background.

Does that color change give any hints regarding what's happening (what
unrelated thing got modified when I re-ran cygwin.exe to install Ruby)?

Hmm. Those colors seem to match what's in
/etc/defaults/etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt:

Rxvt*background:#40
Rxvt*foreground:#bf
Rxvt*scrollBar: true
Rxvt*scrollBar_right:   true

mono-bold-r-normal--*-160-*-*-m-*-iso8859-1
Rxvt*saveLines: 1
!Rxvt*loginshell:   true
Rxvt.backspacekey:  ^H

What's the command to determine which cygwin package installs that file?

Is there a dependency problem in that that package does not depend on the
package
containing the font that that first package depends on?

Most importantly, how to I get rvxt to work right (and consistently)?

changes.

On one hand, that makes sense--I'm not (knowingly) running X11.

On the other hand, it's a little strange that rxvt is still using the colors
given in that file. Is rxvt getting them from compiled-in values, or is it
getting them from somewhere else?

(I also terminated all CygWin processes, started bash, and ran rxvt to see
if CygWin somehow was emulating xrdb's behavior (of reading the X11 defaults)
some
other way, but there was still no difference.)

In any case, that still leaves unanswered the question of what makes rvxt switch
between normally spaced black characters on a white background vs. widely spaced
yellow on blue.

What else does rxvt read?

Does rxvt switch to some more-basic default (i.e., the black-on-white setting
rather
than the yellow-on-blue setting) if it can't find something it's looking for?

What else might be going on?

  account instead of a local sshd_server account.
  [snip]
  But when I login via ssh:
$ echo $USER
tschutter
$ echo $USERNAME
sshd_server

Yes -- Windows does not understand user impersonation and does not allow
real user switching. So what sshd does is invoke processes with the
appropriate token privileges for the user it's impersonating, while
updating internal Cygwin data structures, but still running as
sshd_server. So Cygwin sees the right user (in its internal state), but
Windows processes, of course, don't.

  The application event log has this error message:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( sshd ) cannot be
  found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
  information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
  computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this
  description; see Help and Support for details. The following
  information is part of the event: sshd: PID 2068: service `sshd'
  failed: signal 11 raised.

Oops -- a segfault. This is definitely a bug somewhere -- no matter what,
sshd should not segfault.

 First, I am sorry that I broke the original thread. I was not
 subscribed to the list when I made the first post, so I was unable to
 reply to that thread.

There is a way to do this with the help of the archives. I've posted the
recipe multiple times -- you should be able to find it in the archives.

 I solved the problem. I had missed the /var/log files when changing
 ownership to the new domain sshd_server account. The chown command
 above should be:
   chown fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr /etc/ssh* /var/empty /var/log/lastlog
 /var/log/sshd.log

 Now the sshd server starts, and when I login my id is correct, and I can
 view shares:
   $ echo $USERDOMAIN

   $ ls //other/f$
   Data  RECYCLERSystem\ Volume\ Information

 Note that my USERNAME is still wrong:
   $ echo $USERNAME
   fdsv-sa-prx-sshdsrvr

See above.

   $ net use \\other\f$
   System error 67 has occurred.

   The network name cannot be found.

See net help use:
  The syntax of this command is:
  NET USE
  [devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]
...
  password Is the password needed to access the shared resource.
  *Produces a prompt for the password. The password is
   not displayed when you type it at the password prompt.

So, you need to type net use '\\other\f$' \* (note the escaped/quoted
'*'), and it'll prompt you for the password.

 As Larry Hall pointed out in the other thread, the cyglsa dll should
 solve this problem and I look forward to trying it out when 1.7.x is

No. There is something else going on, but Ruby does NOT affect rxvt.

However, I suggest rather than blindly re-installing/un-installing
packages at random, you instead read the documentation.

/usr/share/doc/Cygwin/rxvt-20050409.README

rxvt,
it started in messed-up form--widely spaced characters, in yellow, on a

before == default when rxvt can't find, and is not explicitly given,
any configuration information at all.

after == rxvt found the default system app-defaults file
(/etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt) but you do not have the fonts that it
specifies.

Either install the bitstream vera fonts in your Windows sytem, (e.g. go
to Control Panel/Fonts...

http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/ttf-bitstream-vera/1.10/

Or change the specified font. You can do the latter by editing the
/etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt file itself, or overriding it for your
particular account by

 (1) creating a ~/.Xdefaults file that specifies a different font
 (2) explicitly starting rxvt with the '-fn some font' option

Does that color change give any hints regarding what's happening (what
unrelated thing got modified when I re-ran cygwin.exe to install Ruby)?

My guess is that rxvt's own postinstall script, which is supposed to
copy /etc/defaults/etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt into the actual
/etc/X11/app-defaults/ directory failed the first time you ran setup.
Then second time you ran setup, it tried again to run all the
post-install scripts that had not yet succeeded. This second time, it
worked, and you are now the proud owner of an /etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt
file, which rxvt.exe now finds.

Hmm. Those colors seem to match what's in
/etc/defaults/etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt:

Rxvt*background:#40
Rxvt*foreground:#bf
Rxvt*scrollBar:true
Rxvt*scrollBar_right:   true
Rxvt*font:-bitstream-bitstream vera sans
mono-medium-r-normal--*-160-*-*-m-*-iso8859-1
Rxvt*boldfont:-bitstream-bitstream vera sans
mono-bold-r-normal--*-160-*-*-m-*-iso8859-1

Rxvt*saveLines: 1
!Rxvt*loginshell:true
Rxvt.backspacekey:  ^H

What's the command to determine which cygwin package installs that file?

cygcheck -f /etc/defaults/etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt

which will tell you it is, perhaps unsurprisingly, installed by the rxvt
package. However, that is the *default* version of the file. The actual
file that is used by rxvt at runtime is in /etc/X11/app-defaults/, not
in /etc/defaults/etc/X11/app-defaults/. It is copied from one location
to the other by (again, surprise!) the rxvt post-installation script,
which is automatically executed by setup.exe the first time you install
the rxvt package -- or every time you run setup.exe, until the script
succeeds if there were unexpected problems.

Is there a dependency problem in that that package does not depend on
the package

containing the font that that first package depends on?

No.

Most importantly, how to I get rvxt to work right (and consistently)?

Change the two lines that start with Rxvt*font and Rxvt*boldfont in
/etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt with the following (or override using
~/.Xdefaults). Each entry should be all on one line, and mind the space
between Lucida and Console (ditto Courier and New):

Either

Rxvt*font: -outline-Lucida
Console-normal-r-*-*-14-*-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1
Rxvt*boldfont: -outline-Lucida
Console-bold-r-*-*-14-*-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1

Or

Rxvt*font: -outline-Courier
New-normal-r-*-*-16-*-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1
Rxvt*boldfont: -outline-Courier
New-bold-r-*-*-16-*-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1

Alternatively, you can specify the font on the command line (but there,
you have to use windows names for the fonts, not the XLFD names above.
That is,

rxvt.exe -fn Lucida Console-14 ...

or

rxvt.exe -fn Courier New-16

It's getting them from /etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt. rxvt parses the

Because nothing (that matters) changed. /etc/X11/app-defaults/Rxvt was
still there, and rxvt itself read the contents.

In any case, that still leaves unanswered the question of what makes
rvxt switch

Well, at least Windows processes don't understand the Cygwin notion of
effective UID, which is why $USERNAME and $USER don't match (one is set by
Windows, and the other by a Cygwin process -- bash).

The application event log has this error message:
  The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( sshd ) cannot be

 System error 67 has occurred.

 The network name cannot be found.

  See net help use:
The syntax of this command is:
NET USE
[devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]
  ...
password Is the password needed to access the shared
  resource.
*Produces a prompt for the password. The password is
 not displayed when you type it at the password
  prompt.

  So, you need to type net use '\\other\f$' \* (note the
 escaped/quoted
  '*'), and it'll prompt you for the password.

 OK. So on a console cygwin shell:
   $ net use '\\other\f$'
   The command completed successfully.

 But when run in a ssh shell (using the sshd_server account):
   $ net use '\\other\f$' \*
   Type the password for \\zoom\f$: System error 1326 has occurred.

   Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Umm, yes. Sorry. I forgot that sshd runs in a pty, which is a pipe as
far as Windows is concerned. And 'net' cannot read the password from a
pipe...

 Same thing happens with:
   $ net use '\\other\f$' '*'
   $ net use '\\other\f$' *

Actually supplying the password instead of '*' should work.

 Subject: Unable to run sshd under a domain sshd_server account

 I am having problems setting up sshd to run under a domain
   sshd_server
 account instead of a local sshd_server account.
 [snip]
 But when I login via ssh:
   $ echo $USER
   tschutter
   $ echo $USERNAME
   sshd_server

   Yes -- Windows does not understand user impersonation and does not
   allow real user switching. So what sshd does is invoke processes with
   the appropriate token privileges for the user it's impersonating,
   while updating internal Cygwin data structures, but still running as
   sshd_server. So Cygwin sees the right user (in its internal state),
   but Windows processes, of course, don't.

  Interesting. I suspected this, but this is the first time that I have
  seen this explicitly stated.

 Well, at least Windows processes don't understand the Cygwin notion of
 effective UID, which is why $USERNAME and $USER don't match (one is set by
 Windows, and the other by a Cygwin process -- bash).

 The application event log has this error message:
   The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( sshd ) cannot be
 found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
 information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
 computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve
 this description; see Help and Support for details. The following
 information is part of the event: sshd: PID 2068: service `sshd'
 failed: signal 11 raised.

   Oops -- a segfault. This is definitely a bug somewhere -- no matter
   what, sshd should not segfault.

  Agreed.

 Those problems are usually very hard to reproduce. If you're set up to
 build a debug version of sshd and run it under gdb to reproduce the fault,
 a stack backtrace would be helpful.

In the other thread, Larry Hall pointed me to the FAQ
http://cygwin.com/faq/faq-nochunks.html#faq.using.shares. One of the
suggestions was to provide your password to a net use command. I
was unable to make that work, because net use never asks for my
password:
  $ net use \\other\f$
  System error 67 has occurred.

  The network name cannot be found.

   See net help use:
 The syntax of this command is:
 NET USE
 [devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]
   ...
 password Is the password needed to access the shared
   resource.

   the ssh remote session

  Same thing happens with:
$ net use '\\other\f$' '*'
$ net use '\\other\f$' *

Well, sorta. It isn't necessary to include information from the header
in the body of your responses. It doesn't solve any useful purpose.
