Packaging bug (?): icu-3.8-5

2009-05-07 Thread Ken Brown
In http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2009-05/msg00186.html I asked for help
with an icu problem, but part of my message was a report of what I think
is a packaging bug in icu-3.8-5. That report should probably have come
to this list. Here's the short version:

$ cygport icu-3.8-5.cygport prep
[...]
*** ERROR: patch icu-3.8-5.src.patch will not apply

Reini, can you fix this or, if it's not a bug, tell me what I'm doing
wrong?  I have cygport-0.9.5-1 and cygwin-1.7.0-46.

Thanks.

Ken

Xwin X Server crashing when using -query startup option to Fedora 11

2009-05-07 Thread Mark Chesterfield

Hi,

I am trying to connect to the preview release of Fedora 11 running Gnome
2.26 on my

laptop and am getting an Xwin server crash.

I know my Xwin Server works with the -query startup option as I use
this option

at work with the laptop.

So i have a couple of questions:
a. Have I hit a bug?
b. Does it appear to be an Xwin bug or should I instead be submitting
it to the Fedora 11 support forums and bug handling menchanisms?
c. Any ideas for a workaround ?

Thanks for any advice.

Is there a verbose mode I might start up with to get more information?

2009-05-07 Thread Frank Seelisch

Version 3.1.0-1 of Singular has been uploaded.

About:

SINGULAR is a Computer Algebra System for polynomial computations with
special emphasis on the needs of commutative algebra, algebraic
geometry, and singularity theory.

NEWS and CHANGES in SINGULAR 3-1-0
(You will also find this and more detailed information at
http://www.singular.uni-kl.de/Manual/3-1-0/sing_1575.htm)

* new coefficients: Z, Z/m, Z/(2^n) (see Rings and orderings)
* new handling of the default argument in libraries
  (see Parameter list)
* ESingular updated for emacs 22
* licences for all parts of SINGULAR clarified (see Preface)

New SINGULAR functions

* new command: kernel (see kernel)
* new command: sqrfree (see sqrfree)
* command changed: the first argument to monitor should be an
  ASCII link. (see monitor)
* command extended: eliminate: variables to eliminate may also
  be given as intvec. (see eliminate)

Internal Changes

* handling of large input for std improved
* interred implemented in a different way
* kbase honors the attribute isHomog
* jacob accepts modules and matrices
* gcd over algebraic extensions of the rationals implemented
  in a different way
* new build target: libsingular.a (for gfan etc.)
* code variants now depend on CPU type, not OS
* better test for built-in limits (see Limitations)
* operator new(size_t,const std::nothrow_t) now also
  overloaded

New SINGULAR libraries

* surfex: new version 0.90
* new library: redcgs.lib

Changed SINGULAR libraries

* normal.lib ( normal_lib): changed structure of the result,
  new algorithms have been implemented which improve performance
* elim.lib ( elim_lib): elim, nselect, select, select1:
  changed syntax
* homolog.lib: kernel renamed to hom_kernel.
* matrix.lib ( matrix_lib): new commands for computing
  symmetric/exterior powers/bases
* surf.lib: new command surfer: interface to program surfer
* teachstd.lib ( teachstd_lib): spoly works now in non-commutative
  algebras and standard can thus be used there. However, since
  product criterion is a priori not applicable in the
  non-commutative case, one may want to disable it first
* many changes of names in libraries (to have a more consistent
  naming scheme)

This could be an issue with Terminal Server. If you installed TS
on that machine, as a temporary workaround, switch off DEP. For the
mid term we have a tool called peflags/peflagsall (in the rebase
package) which allows to set the TS-awareness flag in executables.
This will get rid of the problem (just use it from ash, which isn't
affected by the problem for some reason). For the long term we will
get a new gcc-4 at one point which sets the TS-awareness flag for
newly created executables automatically.

  This is my other nomination for the user interface hall of shame for

is just never a good thing.

 No, it wouldn't. The maximize/restore button should do just fine.

  I think the optimal solution would be to make setup.exe remember its last
used window size, like everything else does, so that you set it the way you
like it once the first time you use it and then it's just right from then on in.

  It's on my TO-DO list, but so are a lot of things :-/

 This could be an issue with Terminal Server. If you installed TS
 on that machine, as a temporary workaround, switch off DEP. For the
 mid term we have a tool called peflags/peflagsall (in the rebase
 package) which allows to set the TS-awareness flag in executables.
 This will get rid of the problem (just use it from ash, which isn't
 affected by the problem for some reason). For the long term we will
 get a new gcc-4 at one point which sets the TS-awareness flag for
 newly created executables automatically.

Normally, people start cygwin using cygwin.bat (or an icon on their
desktop that does the same). This sets up some useful stuff.

From the picture in your previous post, you just started a shell
(bash.exe) inside a command window. In other words, there no
guarantee that any useful environment was set up.

The commands that see working are builtin shell commands. Things like
ls are not (they are separate executables) and will need a proper path
to find.

Yep. To get the usual environment, bash needs to be invoked with
option --login (or -l), which makes it a login shell and ensures
that /etc/profile is executed.

That's why I implemented it (that + Corinna asked me to do something
like this a while ago). It certainly isn't particularly useful to
ALWAYS open a window which is too small to hold the information it is
trying to convey. That's what setup.exe used to do.

It is pretty difficult to make setup's property sheet methods do
anything more flexible than maximize. One alternative is to make all of
the setup windows bigger. I tried that and it looked much more
intrusive than just maximizing the one window which needs it.

Lots of installers take full control of the screen. setup.exe is unique
in that it doesn't take full control for the entire install process.

Has anyone noticed that setup.exe now prints to the screen as well
as displaying dialog boxes? So, in theory you can do this:

setup --help

and see something useful.

If that doesn't work (and it may not on older versions of Windows) then
setup --help | less should still work.

Setup.exe crash while uninstalling libintl8 0.17-1

This started happening after I noticed some security software blocking cygwin's

 I can mark libintl8 as 'keep' and install other software without a problem.

Perhaps reinstalling the same version (bypassing the uninstall step) will bring

ssh, smbntsec, mounted home directory - is it possible

2009-05-07 Thread Andrew DeFaria
I've found that in life if you don't completely solve a problem you tend
to come back upon it until you do. Dredging up an old issue
(http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2006-10/msg00553.html) of which Corinna
commented here: http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2006-10/msg00644.html
but it was what Igor said in
http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2003-06/msg00080.html that really got me
thinking.

From what I understand, if you wish to share a home directory via SMB
among a number of Windows machines then you will have problems with ssh
and permissions if you are attempting to use pre-shared ssh keys. By
using pre-shared ssh keys you are attempting to allow passwordless ssh
login - secure ssh login but passwordless nonetheless. As such, when you
log into the Windows machine you will not have access to your SMB home
directory, since as Igor says trying to access network shares from a
session you did with passwordless authentication... is not gonna
work. As I understand it, when no password is supplied then no password
is available to give Windows in order to authenticate access to the SMB
share. So, during the attempt to authenticate the pre-shared key, the
sshd process cannot access the user's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. So then it
eventually has to prompt for the password. But even worse, after giving
the password you still have no access to your home directory.

Although Cygwin 1.7 may offer some hope:

Cygwin now allows storage and use of user passwords in a hidden area
of the registry. This is tried first when Cygwin is called by
privileged processes to switch the user context. This allows, for
instance, ssh public key sessions with full network credentials to
access shares on other machines.

my client isn't able to use Cygwin 1.7 yet.

So to recap: I'd like to provide pre-shared key ssh access to a
particular username. I cannot, however, use an SMB shared home directory
for that user without encountering problems with ssh and permissions.

If the above statement is not true and you have any ideas on how to
achieve these objectives then let me know.

About:

SINGULAR is a Computer Algebra System for polynomial computations with
special emphasis on the needs of commutative algebra, algebraic
geometry, and singularity theory.

NEWS and CHANGES in SINGULAR 3-1-0
(You will also find this and more detailed information at
http://www.singular.uni-kl.de/Manual/3-1-0/sing_1575.htm)

* new coefficients: Z, Z/m, Z/(2^n) (see Rings and orderings)
* new handling of the default argument in libraries
  (see Parameter list)
* ESingular updated for emacs 22
* licences for all parts of SINGULAR clarified (see Preface)

New SINGULAR functions

* new command: kernel (see kernel)
* new command: sqrfree (see sqrfree)
* command changed: the first argument to monitor should be an
  ASCII link. (see monitor)

* interred implemented in a different way
* kbase honors the attribute isHomog
* jacob accepts modules and matrices
* gcd over algebraic extensions of the rationals implemented
  in a different way
* new build target: libsingular.a (for gfan etc.)
* code variants now depend on CPU type, not OS
* better test for built-in limits (see Limitations)
* operator new(size_t,const std::nothrow_t) now also
  overloaded

New SINGULAR libraries

  new algorithms have been implemented which improve performance
* elim.lib ( elim_lib): elim, nselect, select, select1:
  changed syntax
* homolog.lib: kernel renamed to hom_kernel.
* matrix.lib ( matrix_lib): new commands for computing
  symmetric/exterior powers/bases
* surf.lib: new command surfer: interface to program surfer
* teachstd.lib ( teachstd_lib): spoly works now in non-commutative
  algebras and standard can thus be used there. However, since
  product criterion is a priori not applicable in the
  non-commutative case, one may want to disable it first
* many changes of names in libraries (to have a more consistent
  naming scheme)
