Packaging bug (?): icu-3.8-5
In http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2009-05/msg00186.html I asked for help with an icu problem, but part of my message was a report of what I think is a packaging bug in icu-3.8-5. That report should probably have come to this list. Here's the short version: $ cygport icu-3.8-5.cygport prep [...] *** ERROR: patch icu-3.8-5.src.patch will not apply Reini, can you fix this or, if it's not a bug, tell me what I'm doing wrong? I have cygport-0.9.5-1 and cygwin-1.7.0-46. Thanks. Ken

Xwin X Server crashing when using -query startup option to Fedora 11
Hi, I am trying to connect to the preview release of Fedora 11 running Gnome 2.26 on my laptop and am getting an Xwin server crash. I know my Xwin Server works with the -query startup option as I use this option at work with the laptop. So i have a couple of questions: a. Have I hit a bug? b. Does it appear to be an Xwin bug or should I instead be submitting it to the Fedora 11 support forums and bug handling menchanisms? c. Any ideas for a workaround ? Thanks for any advice. To get the usual environment, bash needs to be invoked with option --login (or -l), which makes it a login shell and ensures that /etc/profile is executed. By the way, I don't like that setup maximizes the window when on the package selection step. I haven't seen it, but it certainly sounds wrong for a wizard-style window to change its size when you press the Next button. Hm, I always think it's kind of handy. Also that it changes back again after you're done with the selections. Saves me 2 clicks every time I run setup. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/

It certainly isn't particularly useful to ALWAYS open a window which is too small to hold the information it is trying to convey. That's what setup.exe used to do. It is pretty difficult to make setup's property sheet methods do anything more flexible than maximize. One alternative is to make all of the setup windows bigger. I tried that and it looked much more intrusive than just maximizing the one window which needs it. Lots of installers take full control of the screen. setup.exe is unique in that it doesn't take full control for the entire install process. cgf -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/

If that doesn't work (and it may not on older versions of Windows) then setup --help | less should still work. cgf -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/

ssh, smbntsec, mounted home directory - is it possible
I've found that in life if you don't completely solve a problem you tend to come back upon it until you do. Dredging up an old issue (http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2006-10/msg00553.html) of which Corinna commented here: http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2006-10/msg00644.html but it was what Igor said in http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2003-06/msg00080.html that really got me thinking. From what I understand, if you wish to share a home directory via SMB among a number of Windows machines then you will have problems with ssh and permissions if you are attempting to use pre-shared ssh keys. By using pre-shared ssh keys you are attempting to allow passwordless ssh login - secure ssh login but passwordless nonetheless. As such, when you log into the Windows machine you will not have access to your SMB home directory, since as Igor says trying to access network shares from a session you did with passwordless authentication... is not gonna work. As I understand it, when no password is supplied then no password is available to give Windows in order to authenticate access to the SMB share. So, during the attempt to authenticate the pre-shared key, the sshd process cannot access the user's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. So then it eventually has to prompt for the password. But even worse, after giving the password you still have no access to your home directory. Although Cygwin 1.7 may offer some hope: Cygwin now allows storage and use of user passwords in a hidden area of the registry. This is tried first when Cygwin is called by privileged processes to switch the user context. This allows, for instance, ssh public key sessions with full network credentials to access shares on other machines. my client isn't able to use Cygwin 1.7 yet. So to recap: I'd like to provide pre-shared key ssh access to a particular username. I cannot, however, use an SMB shared home directory for that user without encountering problems with ssh and permissions. If the above statement is not true and you have any ideas on how to achieve these objectives then let me know. -- Andrew DeFaria http://defaria.com Can you sentence a homeless man to house arrest? -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/
