Re: Cygwin and lz/lza running out of memory?

2013-09-22 Thread Matt D.
The link sounded promising but no matter how high I set it (tried up to
8192), I get the same error, even when bringing down the compression
ratio a bit.

I attempted to increase the cygwin heap on both /usr/lib/p7zip/7z.exe
and 7za.exe.

I have no clue. Though I'm using windows 8, the following seems to apply:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/turn-windows-firewall-on-off#turn-windows-firewall-on-off=windows-vista

But, at any rate, though the indication to turn on/off firewall is
there, it's not actionable. Meaning, the options don't seem to be
enabled.

OK, done on windows with "ncat -lp 22". The application keeps there
listening I'd guess.

This on the remote box just hangs, and nothing happens. Apparently it
happens the same as with ssh.

No, "All Users" is also required to set up services (like sshd, crond, etc.)
to work for all users (i.e. switch user context). This is the recommended
way to install so that these subsequent facilities can be used with a
minimum of fuss or trouble.

For Cygwin packages other than the one providing the Cygwin DLL itself,
Cygwin-specific documentation is provided under /usr/share/doc/Cygwin.
General package documentation is found under /usr/share/doc/.

   C:\Cygwin\bin\run.exe -p /usr/bin bash -l -i -c "emacs -display

I don't think this has anything to do with emacs. There have been
several reports of problems with run-1.3.0-1. Try downgrading to the
previous version of run, or switch to run2.

I first tried just changing the command line to "run2". No change.

run2 is not a drop-in replacement for run. If you want to use it, you
have to install the run2 package and read the documentation. Or you
could run the script /usr/bin/make-emacs-shortcut, which creates a
shortcut that uses run2.

I already had run2 installed. I ran "make-emacs-shortcut". I moved the
resulting shortcut to the desktop, giving it a new name. I double-clicked it. Nothing
happened. I than created a cmd window and pasted in the command line from the shortcut
and ran it. Nothing. I then pasted in the command line from the old shortcut, and Emacs
came up.

I'd like to find out what went wrong with the shortcut created by
make-emacs-shortcut. What's the target? And what are the contents of
the emacs.xml file that it uses?

Yes, cron-config is what I meant.

You should see a vi session.
Do you have vi installed?
What is the value of EDITOR?

This could indicate a deeper problem, confusing not just cron.

Are you familiar with the crontab format? If not, try this:

You will have more luck running cron 'as yourself': it is straightforward.
Running it as a privileged user is more complicated.

Is there a specific reason why you want to run it as system?

RE: cannot run setup64.exe without admin privileges (even if renamed foo.exe)

2013-09-22 Thread Buchbinder, Barry (NIH/NIAID) [E]
Yaakov (Cygwin/X) sent the following at Thursday, September 12, 2013 12:42 PM
>UAC Installer Detection only affects x86 binaries, so that only helps
>with setup-x86.exe. As for setup-x86_64.exe, its builtin manifest

>automatically, and most people install Cygwin for All Users.

Correct me if I'm wrong (like I need to ask!), but my impression is that the
only thing for which setup for 'Cygwin for All Users' currently needs admin
privileges is to create shortcuts in "C:\Users\All Users\Desktop" and
"C:\Users\All Users\Start Menu" (or wherever they point to).

It seems to me that what people who want to install 64bit Cygwin must do is
to install 32 bit first, then compile setup, then install 64 bit. If that's
what I'll have to do, I'll probably stick with 32 bit for as long as possible

That seems like a lot more bother than creating some shortcuts.
(Where "bother" = "bother_to_an_individual" X "number_of_individuals".)

(As for "most people install Cygwin for All Users", how could one possibly
know? And there's a difference between installing for all users and needing
to do so. I don't have admin privileges, but if I did I would have
installed for all users. And no one else uses my machine and no one in my
office has any idea how to use my scripts, let alone use Cygwin to do
something by themselves.)

So this is a plea* that the setup process be designed to be as friendly as
possible for those without admin privileges. Change setup.exe's name to not
have "setup" or "install". (I nominate "getcygwin".) Would providing two
versions of setup-x86_64.exe that differ only in the manifest be burdensome
to the maintainers? Etc.

* not a request

Thanks for considering this.

And thanks to everyone for their contributions to Cygwin.

Best wishes,

- Barry

Yes, see:

It looks like you have no routing to that port.
What happens when you turn off the windoze firewall completely?

To see if there is routing, I find it easier to use netcat
Install netcat, disable sshd server, then run this:
  $ nc -lp 22

On your client, you run
  $ echo blah | nc  22

If you have routing, then your problem is in sshd
