None, if you are willing and able to patch the odd ones to use system libraries instead of bundled ones, to not treat Cygwin as Win32 (because hey, there's "win" in that string) and making sure the tests actually pass, reporting such bugs upstream (preferably with a patch) and skipping the update or carrying a local patch as long as upstream is mulling over a fix. To summarize, not really any more advantages than getting any other package from the distribution instead of building it yourself. Re: cygport: 'announce' feature branch

Users might want to simply paste it into an email, and the error message seems a little unfriendly. First, I have already changed SMTP_SERVER to default to localhost, matching git's behaviour. (If it wasn't already painfully obvious, this is all modelled after git send-email.) Therefore, the error message now reflects an actual failure to send the message. The analogy with git explains my reaction. cygport announce strikes me as a combination of git format-patch and git send-email. In my own use of git, I've never bothered to configure git send-email. I just use git format-patch and paste it or attach it to an email. So I was expecting to use cygport announce the same way. And I can in fact use it the same way, but it tells me there's an error. That's OK. I'll try not to take it personally. I went ahead and configured the SMTP_* variables in .cygport.conf, but I didn't want to put my password in that file. So I left SMTP_PASS unset. This resulted in the following: Sending announcement of emacs-auctex-11.89-1 via smtp.cornell.edu unable to set username and password at /dev/fd/63 line 30. *** ERROR: Sending announcement failed, mbox is /tmp/cygwin-announce-emacs-auctex-11.89-1.12cyxI I suggest that cygport prompt the user for a password in this situation, the way git send-email does. emacs-auctex 11.89-1
The following packages have been uploaded to the Cygwin distribution: * emacs-auctex-11.89-1 * preview-latex-11.89-1 AUCTeX is an extensible package for writing and formatting TeX files in GNU Emacs and XEmacs. It supports many different TeX macro packages, including AMS-TeX, LaTeX, Texinfo, ConTeXt, and DocTeX (dtx files). AUCTeX includes preview-latex, which makes LaTeX a tightly integrated component of your editing workflow by visualizing selected source chunks (such as single formulas or graphics) directly as images in the source buffer. preview_latex is a self-contained subpackage of emacs-auctex that allows appropriately selected parts of a LaTeX document to be formatted and displayed within the Emacs editor. It also has uses that do not require Emacs. This is an update to the latest upstream release. See the announcement at http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/info-auctex/2015-11/msg0.html for a list of changes since the previous release. Ken Brown Cygwin's emacs-auctex maintainer
