i installed it only on my user account. it was working, great...i had
user [EMAIL PROTECTED]
i deleted this user a make newbut when i run cygwin in that user,
there was just:
bash.exe: warning: could not find /tmp, please create!
bash-2.05b$
i set the variables to installdir/all subdirs including tmp directory,
but it still doesnt work.
wheres the problem?
You probably have to install Cygwin for "All Users", instead of "Just Me".

Sure. Uninstall and reinstall the 'openssh' package and then follow the
configuration instructions in '/usr/share/doc/Cygwin/openssh.README'.
Either that or contact the author of the instructions you used to create
your installation. Those instructions weren't provided as part of Cygwin
so for practical reasons, they are off-topic for this list.
Hi David,
I had the same problem, and it turned out to be caused by McAfee VirusScan
8.0i. If Larry's solution doesn't work for you, and if you do in fact have
McAfee installed, you might want to try making the sshd service dependent on
the McShield service using a command like:

/usr/bin/regtool -m set
/machine/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/sshd/DependOnService McShield

It worked for me :)

cygwin sshd will not run under McAfee VirusScan 8.0i

2004-11-19 Thread Rob S.i.k.l.o.s
Hi All
After upgrading from VirusScan 7.1 to 8.0i I receive the following error
every time a connection is established to CYGWIN's SSHD server. The client
connection then immediately fails. If VirusScan is disabled everything works
fine. The SSHD server also worked fine under VirusScan 7.1.

As a workaround, I've hacked the ssh-host-config file to add "-y McShield"
to the "cygrunsrv -I" command. However, there's a problem somewhere.

Should we:
   a) treat this as a McAfee bug and just let people search the mailing
list archives until McAfee decides to fix it;
   b) treat it as a McAfee bug and automatically add "-y McShield" in
ssh-host-config if that service exists; or
   c) investigate it as a possibly cygwin sshd bug;
?

Cheers,
Rob.

Hi All,
When I connect to any machine using "ssh -X", so that X display is
automatically tunelled over the ssh connection, hitting CTRL-C at any time
kills the ssh process, which outputs "Killed by signal 2."
This does not happen if I omit the "-X" when running ssh.

Re: AW: Inaccessible remote volumes when logged in via ssh

2004-05-20 Thread Rob S.i.k.l.o.s
Hello,

I just noticed that I am also using this problem.

For example:

$ mount
C:\cygwin\bin on /usr/bin type system (binmode)
C:\cygwin\lib on /usr/lib type system (binmode)
C:\cygwin on / type system (binmode)
c: on /c type system (binmode,noumount)
w: on /w type system (binmode,noumount)
z: on /z type system (binmode,noumount)

$ ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]'s password:
Last login: Thu May 20 22:00:01 2004 from localhost
You are successfully logged in to this server!!!

$ mount
C:\cygwin\bin on /usr/bin type system (binmode)
C:\cygwin\lib on /usr/lib type system (binmode)
C:\cygwin on / type system (binmode)
c: on /c type system (binmode,noumount)

I have no idea why this is happening. I know I had it working with sshd on
win2k, but I'm running XP now. Other than the o/s change, and updating
cygwin every once in a while (including today), I haven't done anything
different. I just reinstalled cygwin from scratch (wanted to do it anyways)
and the problem is still there.

Anything I can do to to figure out what the problem is?

Thanks a million,

Rob.

killing processes owned by others with kill.exe

2004-03-08 Thread Rob S.i.k.l.o.s
Hello,

I've noticed that /bin/kill.exe is unable to kill processes that are run as
another user (e.g. SYSTEM) (even with -f).

Is this intentional? If not, would it be possible for someone to use the
attached code to make it possible? It is basically a regular version of
"windows" kill, except that it gets "debug privileges" before trying to kill
the process - a nice trick left over from the NT 4.0 resource kit days.

Currently, I have to distribute my own fkill.exe to all the systems where I
need it, but it would be handy if it was part of Cygwin.

I know this is a pretty lazy request, but it seems like functionality that
many people might use. (It's especially useful for killing broken windows
services that run as localsystem, and don't shut down properly).

Thanks,

Rob.

P.S. - I would do this myself, but I don't think I'm qualified to mess with
core Cygwin stuff.

read-only mounts

2004-01-06 Thread Rob S.i.k.l.o.s.
Hello,

I've searched the mailing list archives, but haven't found anything
recent/relevant.

Is there any way to create a mount point that is read-only by everyone?

The reason I want to do this is because I want users logging in anonymously
to my inetd ftpd to be able to access directories not under the ftp user's
home directory. The reason why I want to set read-only access at the mount
table level (instead of the file level) is because I can't guarantee that
various windows operations won't mess up the access bits.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob.

running a TCL shell in an ssh/telnet/rlogin session

2003-10-28 Thread Rob S.i.k.l.o.s.
Hello,

I am connecting (via cygwin ssh client) to a computer running a Cygwin
OpenSSH server, and am trying to run tclsh. When I do this, the TCL shell
opens, but nothing is written to standard output (i.e. no matter what I
type, no result appears on the screen - not even a prompt).

It doensn't matter if I'm using the tclsh that comes with cygwin or some
other one. On the server, CYGWIN=ntsec tty

Everything works ok if I'm not using it through ssh or the like. Also, if I
try the same thing connecting to a unix machine instead of windows/cygwin,
it also works.

any ideas?

thanks,

Rob

right - that totally works. Thanks a lot.

Now, is there any way of having sshd run being able to interact with the
desktop, but without having an empty console window hanging around?

I guess that was probably the point of not allowing sshd to interact with
the desktop in the first place, huh?

Hello,

I have an ssh (cygwin) server running on a windows 2000 machine, and I want
to start a windows program on this machine using a remote command.

My problem is that I can't get the window of the program to display
anywhere.

For example:
I run something like "ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] /c/winnt/system32/notepad.exe"

When I ran this command, I was expecting to see a notepad window open on
"computer", but none appeared. Is there any way to accomplish this?
The process *did* start, because it was listed in the task manager.

Thanks a lot,

starting emacs in X-window mode without a console

Hello,

I've searched the archives a bit, but can't find anything recent and/or

I want to know if there is a way to start an emacs X-window without an

I tried using nohup, but that didn't seem to make any difference - the
console won't exit until all background processes have finished.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
