You're right-- after the first invocation, ssh-add would work, but 
strace showed that the troublesome call would take about 1 s to return.  
That time is now < 1 ms.

Yes, the hang is gone when I use 2005-03-09 snapshot.  And, the formerly 
troublesome call now returns in < 1 ms, instead of ~1 s as before.  As 
Chuck said, thanks to you and Corinna for pursuing and fixing this.

Agreed.  I can tell you that the problem isn't fixed in the 2005-03-09

Andrew, does this solve your problem?

I have been puzzling over the segv that you reported trying to figure
out how it could possibly happen.  I checked in a half-hearted attempt
to fix it but I'm not too confident that it will rectify anything.  It's
dying in networking code at a very strange place.
