Yes, there was discussion a couple of months back. Someone asked for the
feature, and I said I'd release a test version that included the patch, but
I never got around to it. Sorry about that.

What I think I said at the time was that I'd tried the patch, and gave it
up because its behavior was undocumented and I couldn't figure out how to
make it work. Its operation seemed quite confusing to me. But I don't
know if that was just me, and it was working as intended; or if it was some
Cygwin-specific problem.

So, I Promise to post a test version within the next day or two that
includes the patch. Those of you who want to use it will be responsible
for testing it, telling me whether you think it works, and if possible,
providing some simple instructions for using it, that I can include in the
README.Cygwin.

A.

Vertical split in GNU screen

2010-11-17 Thread Johannes Müller

Hi,

Is the vertical split feature of screen already integrated or has it
been abandoned? I found some discussion about it on the mailing list,
but it was never mentioned if the patch was stable or applied. When I
tried the key combination with | and V nothing happened. I would
appreciate having this feature for cygwin.

Thanks a lot,

because i didn't try to compile for cygwin yet!
I will try it and give my feedback! I'm on winxp sp3!

Hi Florent. There is a patch that's been available for a while, that adds
vertical split support to screen. I believe that Debian, Ubuntu, and
probably others already incorporate it into their official screen packages.

I remember the exchange with Jeenu, and after that I did go get the patch,
build screen with it for Cygwin, and try it out. What I found, if I
remember right, is that I saw a lot of what I considered strange behavior,
and very little documentation or help about how the vertical split feature
is supposed to work. It didn't seem to me to be working very well, so I
put it aside.

If people would like to try out the patched version, I can post it as a
test release. Maybe you can tell me if the vertical split feature is
working the way it's supposed to.

Andrew.

1) If you are looking for an enhancement for GNU screen then you should
go to the source:

http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/

and request it there. Then, eventually, it will make its way to Cygwin
and every other distribution which packages GNU screen.

2) You're asking us not to shout at you. Why are you shouting at us?
Periods are what we use to close sentences. Please just use them.

3) Thanks for not quoting raw email addresses.

Jeenu, I'm the screen maintainer for Cygwin. The vertical split functionality
exists as a patch, outside of the last official release, which is version 4.0.3.
I've heard that the patch is supposed to be stable, and people seem to be using
it widely. I've just never taken the time to try to apply it to screen in
Cygwin.

I agree that it would be good to have it in Cygwin. Let me see if I can find a
little time in the next few days to try it out.

Andrew.

Vertical split in GNU screen

2010-04-18 Thread Jeenu V
Hi,

Though I'm not sure if vertical split is officially supported in GNU
screen, I noticed what I installed in my Ubuntu (Karmic) supports it
(C-a |). Does anyone know if it's going to be in Cygwin's port of
screen any time soon?
