cygheap version mismatch ?
It looks like I have managed to screw up my cygwin installation more or less completely :o( What I did: I was trying out some of the latest snapshots, and noticed that KDE would not start with them. So I kept trying, changing back and forth between the different cygwin1.dll files, rebooting and running rebaseall -v between tries. Result: Now, whenever I try starting XWin (whether with KDE or without) it will fail with the message such as the following: C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\XWin.exe (4056): *** cygheap version mismatch detected - 0x6179/0x101. You have multiple copies of cygwin1.dll on your system. Search for cygwin1.dll using the Windows Start-Find/Search facility and delete all but the most recent version. The most recent version *should* reside in x:\cygwin\bin, where 'x' is the drive on which you have installed the cygwin distribution. I have tried putting the original cygwin1.dll back, including reboot and rebaseall -v, but still the same results. As it is, the only thing I can do is run bash in a dos window. There are definitely no multiple copies of that file. I renamed all the other snapshopts to something_else._dll and searched all disks. Any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, did you start any Cygwin services? No. No services. But I got it working again now by running setup and reinstalling everything related to X11. Still, there is the nagging doubt about whether I didn't miss a package or two in the reinstall and perhaps have a time-bomb lurking in the depths of the system that may blow up in my face somewhere a little further down the road. I would have preferred to actually understand what was happening - were the files corrupt ? How did it happen ? If they weren't, how would reinstalling the same files fix the problem ? cygheap version mismatch detected
I seem to have managed to completely crash my cygwin installation :o( After trying some of the recent snapshots I noticed KDE would not start. So I tried with different snapshots (including the original cygwin1.dll) a few times, rebooting and running rebaseall -v between tries. Now neither KDE nor XWin will start at all, instead I get the following message: C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\XWin.exe (2400): *** cygheap version mismatch detected - 0x6179/0x101. There are definitely no multiple copies of cygwin1.dll files on the system. I have renamed the other snapshots something_else._dll and searched through all disks just to make sure. I have restored the original cygwin1.dll, rebooted and run rebaseall -v (with no errors) any number of times but the results are still as above. Running from a dos window still works but that's about it. Return to cygheap version mismatch detected
A few weeks ago I posted (http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2004-09/msg00636.html) and received some very thoughtful responses from the list on a problem I was having where a program I wrote generates a cygheap version mismatch detected error immediately upon execution and exists. Unfortunately, I've been unable resolve this issue. Some of the suggestions from the list included removing all cygwin1.dll's from the system except for c:\cygwin\bin\cygwin1.dll and running rebaseall. I've done both of these things, and I've even rebased all the Windows DLL's with cygcheck asleap.exe | rebaseall -T -, still no luck resolving this issue. In an effort to troubleshoot, I setup a clean WinXP Home SP2 installation and installed Cygwin on that system, compiled the code and ran the executable - same error. I don't know if it matters, but this particular application is linking with -lcrypt, -lPacket, and -lwpcap for setkey/crypt and libpcap functions. I've put the source code up at http://home.jwu.edu/jwright/code/asleap-1.2.zip if anyone cares to take a look. Any suggestions on what else I can do to try to resolve this issue? Remove the cygwin tree (c:\cygwin) and then try running the exe again. See what happens. If the program runs, then there is a cygwin1.dll outside of the tree. Check the path that the program uses to see where the dll might be lurking. Could the dll have a different name then cygwin1? Program terminates with cygheap version mismatch detected
I've been using Cygwin for a few years to port code written for Linux systems to Windows systems. Thanks to the developers and supporters for providing such wonderful software. A user recently reported that a tool I have written no longer works on Windows systems, generating the following error: $ ./asleap.exe c:\DEV\testing\asleap.exe (988): *** cygheap version mismatch detected - 0x6178/0xBF. You have multiple copies of cygwin1.dll on your system. Search for cygwin1.dll using the Windows Start-Find/Search facility and delete all but the most recent version. I used the Windows Find functionality as described and removed all cygwin1.dll files except the file in c:\cygwin\bin and rebooted my system, but the error persists. Other Cygwin code on my system is working fine, yet I am unable to identify the potential issue with this program. Other Cygwin code on my system is working fine, yet I am unable to identify the potential issue with this program. I believe the problem may be associated with the changes implemented in Windows XP SP2, but I'm not certain. Has anyone run into a similar issue? Any suggestions?
