The good news is that it runs the regular binaries of your distribution
and behaves in every way almost the same as if it were an independant
server.

The bad news is you have to go to the trouble of setting up an
independant virtual server and it doesn't integrate with windows like
cygwin does.

I've now got coLinux sessions smbmounting my windows disks (and vice
versa) and cygwin X server running in rootless mode (X -multiwindow) so
I can combine my linux and windows apps nicely.

Thanks! I wasn't aware of that interesting project. I'm definitely
going to check it out.

For my immediate needs, however, I managed to get the standard
precompiled native Win32 php4 package to work as a CGI handler inside my
cygwin Apache 1.3. This is suboptimal, and I have to stay away from
cygwin paths (~, symlinks, etc.), but SquirrelMail worked just as
advertised.

mod-php4

I've had a shot at building php4 myself, but failed miserably:
bash-2.05b$ make install
Installing PHP SAPI module: apache
apxs:Error: file libs/libphp4.so is not a DSO
make: *** [install-sapi] Error 1
The only files on libs are libphp4.a (8MB) and libphp4.la (700 bytes).
I've searched for help on this, but the similar reports are either very
old, very clueless, very cryptic or very complex. I definitely would
feel much more comfortable with a packaged setup of PHP.
That being said, any pointers to alternatives to SquirrelMail
(preferrably lighter-weight, and for an IMAP backend) would be welcome...
Cheers,
Rob

The normal WAMP setup works fine with squirrelmail. (And most other php
packages.)
There are lots of easy WAMP installers.

mod-php4 is not part of the distribution at this time. There are
plans to re-add it in the future. No, I don't know when that will
be. ;-)

What were the reasons for removal?
1. WJM.
2. redundancy? (easy to grabcompile or grabrun if needed)
3. technical? (difficulty integrating into cygwin release pipeline,
cross-compilation probs, slow bug fixes)
4. political/personal?
5. other? (URL or concise, relevant reason here)

Great! Thanks for the response. In any case, I've been able to grab
and compile the source already.

Best Regards,
Carlo

What were the reasons for removal?

The Cygwin Apache maintainer repeatedly failed to respond to bugs in his packages,
resulting in them being pulled from the
distribution.
A new mantainer volunteered, and restored apache to the distribution, but has not yet
done the same with all the extra apache
modules.
Max.

Ok. Looking forward to its full blown restoration to the apache distro.

mod-php4 missing from cygwin distro

2004-06-30 Thread Carlo Florendo y Flora
Hello,
I'd like to be able to run apache + php via cygwin. However, a setup
package search for `mod-php4' and the like led to zero results. A
search on `php' returned results but nothing useful.

It seems that mod-php4 is missing.
The following google query didn't help too much:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=jaie=UTF-8q=php%2C+cygwin%2C+missinglr=
Another query led me to
http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2003-09/msg01028.html
but it assumes that libphp4 is installed.
I would be very grateful to anyone who could give me leads on what
happened to the php libs.

Thanks!
Best Regards,
Carlo
