INFO

 - New DLL naming schema: only the major release number is included in
the DLL name so extensions compiled with this release doesn't need to
be recompiled immediatly for future updates of perl 5.8.
 - New directory naming: extensions are now under /usr/lib/perl5/5.8,
 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8 (/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8 for all
extensions distributed with this release) and the archive directory
is simply named 'cygwin' instead of 'cygwin-thread-multi-64int'.
 - This release includes the Win32CORE extension statically.
 - IPC support is enabled, however to make use of it, it is required
to have cygserver running, see the cygserver README in /usr/doc/Cygwin
how to setup / run cygserver.
 - there are still some issues with PERLIO, best bet is to use binary
mounted directories, define PERLIO=perlio in your environment, with
this environment setting nearly all tests are passing when running on
 NTFS.
 - Perl 5.8.6 should be binary compatible with Cygwin perl = 5.8.2,
if you are seeing problems with older extensions, please try to
 recompile these at first.

Updated: fortune-1.99.1-1

2005-01-13 Thread Yitzchak Scott-Thoennes
Achilles: Don't tell me you believe in fortune-telling!
Tortoise: No...but they say it works even if you don't believe in it.
  -- GEB, Hofstadter

I've made a new version of fortune available for installation.

As of version 1.99.1-1, the fortune database has been reorganized and
recategorized. See /usr/share/doc/fortune-1.99.1/{cookie-files,Offensive}.

If you happen across offensive fortunes in the supposedly unoffensive
files, report them to cygwin@cygwin.com and they will be moved if
appropriate. You will get faster response if you also take the time
to file a debian bug report (see README.Debian.offensive in
/usr/share/doc/fortune-1.99.1/debian). If you want to audit the
fortune files for offensiveness, do *not* report your results to
cygwin@cygwin.com; instead, pester the upstream maintainer (see
canonical homepage above).

All debian version 1.99.1-1 patches to the data files have been
applied (see http://packages.debian.org/unstable/source/fortune-mod),
including spelling changes and removal of a number of German quotes.
(Debian provides several language specific fortune datafile packages
that are as yet not distributed in cygwin.)

Removed use of recode, since the recode library seems to have problems;
instead use fake recode functions using iconv. The problems with iconv
that led to fortune changing to recode are somewhat mitigated by using
iconv's transliteration option. This should be a temporary measure.

For a brief description of this package, and a listing of the files it
contains, see http://cygwin.com/packages/ .

To update your installation, click on the Install Cygwin now link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. setup.exe is the utility that cygwin uses to install and
update its packages.

Updated: mingw-runtime-3.7-1

2005-01-13 Thread Earnie Boyd
I've made a new version of the mingw runtime headers and libraries
available for download. A list of what has changed is attached.

Notice, this release is to resolve an issue with lstat being defined as a
macro.

Earnie.

-Installation Instructions-
To update your installation, click on the Install Cygwin now link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. Then, run setup and answer all of the questions.

Note that we do not allow downloads from sources.redhat.com (aka
cygwin.com) due to bandwidth limitations. This means that you will need

to find a mirror which has this update.

In the US,
ftp://mirrors.rcn.net/mirrors/sources.redhat.com/cygwin/
is a reliable high bandwidth connection.

In Germany,
ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/pc/gnuwin32/cygwin/mirrors/cygnus/ is
usually pretty good.

In the UK,
http://programming.ccp14.ac.uk/ftp-mirror/programming/cygwin/pub/cygwin/

is usually up-to-date within 48 hours.

If one of the above doesn't have the latest version of this package then
you can either wait for the site to be updated or find another mirror.

If you have questions or comments, please send them to the Cygwin
mailing list at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
