RE: New maintainer for cURL?

2004-06-03 Thread Roth, Kevin P.
I've found a willing (and presumably able) volunteer. James Hu has
stepped up to the plate.

To answer his question publicly:

What sorts of fixups are needed to get the Cygwin tarballs perfect?

By not perfect I really just meant it's not 100% automated.
E.g. there are better (more perfect) ways to handle building
Cygwin tarballs. But it's been working OK for me, so I
didn't bother switching to a different option.

As the upstream sources (the documentation files in particular)
evolve, my method of building cygwin tarballs will require
tweaking (in the form of changes to the Makefile). To get
changes posted into the upstream sources, simply send a patch
file to the curl-users mailing list (http://curl.haxx.se/mail/)

If you've installed the cygwin curl onto your PC, you'll find
the build instructions are spelled out step by step at:
  /usr/share/doc/Cygwin/curl-7.11.1-1.README

In particular, I've specified how to build both with and
without SSL libraries. I've also spelled out how to
build the customized source tarball.

Note that the only version I ever upload to Cygwin.com
is the one *with* SSL. However, I always build *both*
versions, and upload them both to curl.haxx.se
(see below for details).

Will you tell me how to upload the tarballs to Cygwin's package
 distribution site?

The method I've used in the past is this:

 1. Build the tarballs (both with and without SSL),
and upload them to http://curl.haxx.se/upload/
(write to Daniel Stenberg at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to request
access, I warned him you're coming).

There are a total of 4 (binary w/ SLL, binary w/o SSL,
developer-libs, and finally a customized source tarball).
You can see the filenames at: (scroll to Win32-cygwin)
  http://curl.haxx.se/download.html

 2. Wait up to 5 minutes for Daniel's scripts to find the
new versions and publish them. (see the raw files at
http://curl.haxx.se/download/)

 3. Write to the cygwin-apps mailing list, asking them
to upload the new version of curl, and providing them
with the URLs off of curl.haxx.se (see a sample msg:
http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-apps/2004-03/msg00199.html

 4. Wait until someone has handled that request (they'll
email you when completed.)

 5. Announce the new version of cURL on cygwin-announce. See
http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-announce/2004-03/msg00016.html
for a sample message.

Thanks,
- Kevin

p.s. This means Ricardo's offer of last resort is not needed
at this time. Thanks anyways!

hi Kevin,

I stated in a previous e-mail that I would maintain the JOE package
(haven't uploaded the definitive package yet because I've had some
extremely busy weeks, sorry). It's a package that updates quite rarely,
so
I guess I'll have time for maintaining cURL too...

If noone volunteers, tell me and I'll take it

I'm no longer interested in taking care of the cURL package; are there
any volunteers available to take my place?

It generally builds 100% clean OOTB, so there's rarely any issue; I just
lack the minimal time to keep up with it, and also lack the coding
experience necessary should there ever be a cygwin specific problem to
be fixed (or new feature to support).

A rudimentary build target is in place in the upstream sources to handle
building the Cygwin tarballs. It's not perfect, but it's use is
documented in the package's cygwin README. That readme is also kept in
the upstream sources, in a sub-folder named packages/Win32/cygwin/.

The primary developer (Daniel Stenberg) is very active on the cURL
mailing list, and is highly responsive when needed.
http://curl.haxx.se/. He keeps a listing of all current builds, so in
addition to uploading new Cygwin builds to cygwin.com, it would be nice
to either load them onto curl.haxx.se, or at least let Daniel know about
new versions at cygwin.com so he can link to them there...

 Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?

 Thanks,
 - Kevin

[This email was bounced due to a change in my email address. It looks
like we may have a maintainer for curl but I wanted to get the rest of
this message into the record.]

I hope someone is interested. I use curl all of the time. I seemed to
get a better response to this type of question in the cygwin list. Could
you ask there?

Thanks very much for your time and effort over the last 2.5+ years. I
appreciated it personally, since I benefitted, and I am sure the rest
of the cygwin user base appreciated it as well.

Checking the cygwin-announce logs, it looks like you made somewhere around
13 releases of curl starting on 2001-11-19. I hope that whoever takes your
place will apply the same diligence to the job.
